This place looks like a total hole of a place but once you walk in you feel right at home. One of the owners greets you along with the beautiful smells as soon as you hit the door. Visited for the first time this past weekend after seeing the story in the Washington Post about this place. I was not disappointed. The Charga chicken is amazing! Excellent food prepared by guys who really like good food. Claudio spent the time to inform me about some of the nuances of each of the 3 dishes I considered. The menu is wide ranging and looks to have a lot of great dishes. I started with the chicken soup and the mint lemonade. The soup was rich, nicely full bodied and full of flavor with chunks of chicken and potatoes. The mint tea is home made and delicious. Then I got the main dish of lamb served on two types of rice with a nice salad of greens, beets, cucumbers and tomatoes. And another little bowl of an outstanding chole/chickpea dish. Really great spot for some casual South Asian food that kinda knocked my socks off. Delicious Chicken Seekh that came on a platter with a small salad, biryani rice, and chickpeas. My friend and I tried their sajji and charga chicken pieces, crispy chicken sandwich, and steak and cheese sub for dinner. The chicken pieces and sandwich were AMAZING! Charga and sajji are both I think marinated fried chicken of different flavors but without breading. Not exactly as tender as rotisserie but still juicy and packed full of flavor different from Peruvian or anything else western. The sandwich was great too with a nice spicy sauce. The staff were very friendly and explained how everything, including 6 or so unique sauces (except the salad dressings) are all made in-house. We'll definitely be coming back! read more

Completely RAW chicken momo that I fed my baby, myself and husband before I realized. I called and they tried to tell me how long they cook it for but this was just a raw mixture. They asked if I wanted another order.. I told them I fed it to my baby and then hung up to call poison control.. I microwaved one to show the difference in the meat cooked, white. Honestly, the rest of the food was good. So I gave them two stars. But we haven't gotten sick yet, we just ate it. I pray my baby doesn't get sick. Very stressful for us. And I hope they make sure they don't keep doing this to people. And that they believe me after seeing these pictures. read more

I like mine fried hard and they do it right. Not the biggest wings but tasty. Still need to try the Charga and Saaji fried chicken styles but by all the positive reviews they're amazing too. This place has gotten very popular so call ahead or your order could take 1/2 hour to be ready. So happy to see these guys succeed. Waiting on their expansion/ next location. We lived on Charga take-out during our kitchen renovation so I thought I'd be tired of it but it's still our go-to when we don't feel like cooking. Tonight instead of our usual ( the chicken sampler) I got the fried chicken sandwich with plantains. Spectacular. I live in the neighborhood and have now been to Charga three times. The hospitality is awesome; everyone is greeted with enthusiasm which makes for a really nice start to your meal. I'm moved to write this review because last week I had the best butter chicken I have ever had (and I've had a lot of butter chicken in my life). My #1 spot for rotisserie chicken. I always thought Super Chicken in Tyson's and Spin Pollo were my favorite but Charga is so consistent and has many healthy and flavorful vegetable sides. Okra/Squash/Califlower/Lentils and more. Also their cilantro rice and chaufa fried rice are excellent. Recommend the saiji and peri peri Chicken and the burgers are awesome too. You may find better kabob at one place, Peruvian chicken another, etc, but I dare you to try to find another place that does such a variety of foods as well as they do in one place. These guys are not really what you would call fusion, as there doesn't seem to be cross-cultural dishes...but you can definitely make your own fusion platter from their varieties. I'm generally not a big fan of the red salty chicken, kinda boring everywhere I've had it. NOT ANYMORE! Charga's Tandori Chicken was Amazing! The flavors were incredible, and it was actually spicy, which I loved. I would compare the Heat Level of The Spice as bing similar to buffalo wing Medium or Medium/Hot. So for my fellow Pale Faces, if you can't take a little heat, try one of their other fantastic dishes. I actually looked up their phone number to call them back and thank them... It was that good. Charga Grill is a WONDERFUL hidden gem on Lee Highway in Arlington, right near Virginia Hospital Center (how I discovered it). As other reviews have mentioned, it's a small storefront in somewhat small strip mall with lots of other ethnic restaurants surrounding it. It is not to be missed! I ate lunch there 2x in three days, and left absolutely STUFFED both times, and taking photos of my meals and describing how amazing they were to friends and family. From 2-6 PM Monday-Friday, they have a "linner" special of 1/2 chicken plus two sides (and if the owner likes you, a small serving of their fantastic lentil soup) for $7.99 + tax. If you're not really hungry like myself, it could easily feed two people, or leftovers saved for dinner. My first visit, I tried the Peruvian 1/2 chicken, which, having had Peruvian chicken numerous times at other establishments in the area and being a big fan of the dish, I knew I would enjoy. It was quite delicious, and of course very filling. As previously mentioned, it came with two sides, I selected the yellow rice smothered with red beans and chickpeas (per the owner's recommendation), and fried yucca. If I had any criticism at all, the fried yucca (albeit delicious) was VERY heavy and filling (that's what I get for ordering two carbs as a side dishes though, I suppose). For my second lunch visit, I ordered the house specialty Charga chicken (pictured), per the recommendation of the owner (as an aside, the owner is super friendly, hospitable, and very proud of his restaurant and its product and happy to provide samples of items if a customer is undecided as to what to order; he'll make you feel right at home and a friend immediately). The Charga chicken, although not quite life-changing, is pretty damn close. The chicken is rubbed in a mixture of Pakistani herbs and spices, and then flash fried for 30 seconds. I was kind of fearful of the frying part at first because I knew it would be a big serving of food and can only handle so much "fried food," but there's no breading on the chicken to weigh it down/make it heavier, and it was fried to perfection. The chicken came out moist, tender, and full of flavor. The lemon wedge served with the chicken is a perfect touch, adding the perfect acidity and citrus to complement the symphony of flavors already present. My sides on the second visit were a repeat of the yellow rice with red beans and chickpeas (again, per the owner recommendation), and a serving of roasted potatoes. The roasted potatoes were a very good choice, and not nearly as heavy as the fried yucca. If I have the opportunity to visit a third time this week (a distinct possibility tomorrow), I have a feeling I'll either order to the Sajji chicken (another chicken native to Pakistan, a different region), or the "better than Popeyes" fried chicken sandwich. If I had ANY other criticism at all (and it's really hard to find one), I'd suggest to the employees to order larger water cups (the ones currently in stock are tiny 4 or 6 ounce clear plastic cups), that I needed to refill at least a half dozen times each time I was there to eliminate the need to do that. If you're in the Arlington area, or visiting loved ones at the Virginia Hospital Center like myself, do yourself a favor and enjoy a meal at Charga Meal, your stomach (and your wallet) won't regret it! read more

It is a quaint small establishment which is spartan, simple and has the basics. I went on a busy Saturday afternoon to pickup my order the owner was kind enough to update me as to where in the queue my order was. The wait was well worth it.
