I randomly walked here from my hotel on the way home from Portland. Anderson is just south of Redding. I met the owners who were extremely generous and friendly! Renamed after Covid, this place has a long 70+ years of family history. They were very accommodating with the menu choices. I sat in the bar area, which was far enough away from the huge children's play room to not even know it was there! (No offense to parents, who I'm sure would really enjoy having a full-sized game area for parties.) The food was awesome. (I got the pictured lunch portion chicken Alfredo that was grandma's homemade recipe.) This is a must for anyone traveling on the 5 going to or coming from Shasta/Oregon! okay, I'm rating this place on the one meal I've had here, the Whiskey Burger! first though, let me set the scene: this joint is located in a strip mall and kind of has a bit of a sports bar / saloon theme, but also has a "kids only" gaming room attached (like a poor man's Chuck E. At 2:30 p.m. on a Monday, the place was pretty empty... a very nice waitress (Brooke?) greeted me, sat me near a flatscreen with rodeo on and she mentioned their soup du jour was her favorite, split pea. I got a Whiskey Burger and skipped the fries for the soup since she gave it a rec and dang, the split pea did NOT disappoint. and then the burger came -- sweet whiskey sauce (not too "boozy"), fried onion rings, bacon, pepper jack cheese on a pretzel bun, BANG! I've had better burgers in my life but not by much... and then I got talked into dessert, which was a scoop of cookies and cream gelato on a warm chocolate chip cookie; yes, I'll be getting one of my feet amputated soon. The calzone was a 1 out of 10 and it cost $32 ($28 plus $4 for extra cheese). The carrot cake was not good at all. The wait staff were great, especially the young man who was checking to see if we wanted refills - he was really a delight. Meh. We went to Charlews with family. The menu looked great! Our server was nice but Wow, sooo expensive. We were splitting a xl pizza between 4 people and the minimum for this pizza was $50. We were willing to do it but wanted to remove an item and add something else. We can't do that unless we wanted to spend $6 per topping that isn't on list of items on the pizza menu for that specific pizza. So even if we removed something on the pizza, we'd be charged to add a topping, which was $6. Pretty wild to spend that much just because you want modifications. So we tried to do a build your own with 5 toppings makes the pizza $80... which is crazy! They are only in business because they will supposedly give you free breadsticks for a good review. And the have a jump house for kids. Pretty lame. Save your money, order a pizza and got to rare air. Better experience and will probably spend half the amount ordering somewhere else that has better tasting pizza that doesn't charge you for changes in your pizza. Charlew's is a cozy diner fitting for a big family outing. The portions here are great but wait times for the food took a while. We had a mix of dishes we liked and others we thought we OK. Let's dive in-- Shrimp Linguine (5/5): This was the best dish we ordered! The lemon cream sauce was bursting with flavor & the shrimp were succulent. The portion was significantly smaller for this dish so the only wish is that there was more of it to go around! Family deal (Spaghetti & Meatballs + Garlic Bread + Salad) (3/5): Garlic bread & Salad were great, the spaghetti however was very lackluster in flavor and we ended up leaving it behind. I really enjoyed the meatballs, they were soft and flavorful. 2 Meatballs (Side dish) (5/5): Delicious!! Soft meatballs covered in a savory tomato sauce. Upon entering the host greeted us kindly, wonderful kind person, magenta or fuschia colored hair, said our server the wonderful Natalie would be with us shortly. Natalie was impatient with our orders. Got our drinks and never came back until the food was ready. She brought it all at once, we got Bruschetta as an app, a small pizza and tortellini as a side fries. She never brought the fries, never got us refills on drinks. When she brought the check I asked for boxes and a refill. She vocally scoffed and said fine. I don't know what her issue was but she stood there by the podium staring at our table for the longest time, like she was in a hurry for us to get done, but decided to never get us refills or check in at all, then I mentioned the fries... What a mistake. I said that I never got the fries and asked if we could just get some garlic bread instead, in my head I assumed it would be a win win since fries don't taste good later and the side of fries is more expensive than two pieces of garlic bread. She got miffed, stomped off got and came back with a piping got dish of fries. I left them there. Aside from some of the most outlandishly bad service I've ever experienced, Charlew's was amazing! Quality and Quantity outweigh the price, place was clean and inviting, the food was delicious and fresh, and the place was old pizzeria meets pub! This place is amazing. A separate spot for kids to be kids while waiting for dinner. Yes they charge a small fee, but what that tells me is they take care of the area and it's not a free babysitter while mom and dad drink beer and eat. The play area is clean and tidy! I originally reached out to reserve the 14th, but was told that date was already booked. Kathy let me know that the 12th and 15th were available instead, so I chose the 15th and responded about three hours later confirming that date. The next day, I was told the 15th had already been booked. What was frustrating wasn't just losing the date -- it was the lack of communication. If dates are filling that quickly, there should be clearer communication or some kind of temporary hold while someone confirms. It felt unorganized and honestly unprofessional. On top of that, the tone of the response I received after I expressed my frustration felt dismissive rather than understanding. I've never had a restaurant communicate that way when trying to plan an event. It made the whole experience feel uncomfortable. Good luck getting served here if you aren't a local. This was the light at the end of our proverbial road trip tunnel. When we arrived, the restaurant was only a third full; the parking lot was nearly empty. It was 7 PM on a Friday night. As instructed, we waited to be sat. To our surprise, there was a wait list of "maybe 10 minutes". It was a nice day so we waited outside, in front of the restaurant as other patrons were doing. We waited almost 20 minutes when I noticed the waitress who took my name had already sat people, including large parties, who arrived after our party of 3. I went inside to take a peek at the waitlist, and she had crossed my name off. I understand I was outside, but I was literally right in front of the glass doors. I am 6 feet tall with bright red hair; pretty hard to miss me. I confronted the waitress and she shoved us in a booth in the corner. I had asked to sit outside. There were plenty of patio seats but at this point I just needed to get my children fed. We waited another 10 minutes with not so much as a water offered to us. I noticed there was a rapport with local, must be regular patrons. Which is excellent, but that sort of hospitality should be extended to all guests. We ended up leaving and nobody noticed. Ever since my wife and I moved back to Redding CA, we have been looking for a Pizza place and a great Italian Restaurant. We have driven by this restaurant once before but said to ourselves "We gotta visit this place one day!" So we actually made it to Charlew's and let me tell you from the time we walked in to when we got our food, to when we left that place certainly did NOT disappoint. I ordered the Gnocchi Noni Style and when my food came to me there was this HUGE Meatball in the middle that was absolutely delicious. My wife ordered a ham & onion Calzone and she was very happy with what she ordered as well. For an appetizer we ordered the Beer Cheese bites and they certainly didnt disappoint either. Our waitress Brooke was very hospitable and saw to it that ALL of our needs were taken care of. My wife did comment about the Atmosphere and the place was very well lit and it had some very great music (with some of the songs we know), playing in the background. After our meal ended, we let our Waitress know to tell Management, that for someone who was there for their first time, that we would be back. If you register you can be a part of their marketing announcements, which I find as a great feature as well because they may have coupons they will send you. Yan was antique shopping so I came into this restaurant by myself. I'm not joking, maybe I wasn't enough of their usual customer type. The waitresses bypassed me even after they escorted me to a table. Other people sat down and their orders were taken, I'd ask if they were the waitress for this station. The server needs trained. She knew very little about the beers served other than the names., She knew nothing about IBU's, she either didn't answer or directed me to the menu. We had my grandson's birthday here tonight in their banquet room. They had bounce houses, slides, and all kinds of fun activities! We met the owner and she was a very down to earth, authentic and such sweetheart! Abby waited on us and she did an excellent job! She went out of her way to make sure we had all of our needs met. Thank you, Abby! The pizza was great, the french fries were awesome, the barbecue chicken wings were amazing and the cheesy garlic bread was on point! Not to mention, they have a bar in the front with TVs up with the games on and they also have a dining area. I've been in Anderson for over a year and have always defaulted to Round Table for pizza. Today I decided to try Charlew's. WOW! Their "tap house pizza" was 10x better than Round Table. My partner got the chicken fettuccine pasta. She said that the sauce was watery and it lacked flavour. So she took it to go and said she will spruce it up at home haha! Miss the Mary's menu, but we come somewhat regularly. Clean and consistent. Great spot to bring kids.

The food was ok , nothing to write home about , but my biggest complaint was I was seated near where I could see everything that the employees were doing - no one was washing their hands touching the counters then sticking their bare hands into the salad supplies and making salads , and pizza ... touching ovens grabbing plates , containers up on the shelf then back to making food again without washing their hands - up side our waitress Natalie was very attentive!
