I've tried chicken cheesesteaks up and down the east coast. Obviously, those in Philadelphia are the best. Charleys Cheesesteaks is perfectly adequate. The food is consistent at all the franchises. I've been to 3 so far. The Downtown Crossing location is convenient - you can order in-person or online, and then you can eat at one of the tables in the general food court area or be on your way. The plain fries are quite good. The fountain drinks do taste watered down, though, but I think that's to be expected. read more

I stopped here after a later shift at the hospital because I was starving and wasn't feeling the Golden Arches nextdoor. The staff was super friendly and friendly the shop stand had a nice look to it. The sandwich was freshly made which I appreciate, and came in a nice carry out box. The meat itself though... somehow the meat was ripping hot and clearly just came off the skillet, but it simultaneously tasted extremely bland. Not even the American cheese melted on top, nor the onions, could really save it. It was a ripping, steaming hot shaved beef sandwich with some cheese and onions, and somehow the entire thing tasted like frozen meat still. Anyway, it definitely serves its purpose catering to hospital clientele nearby for a hearty, heavy meal when you want to eat your feelings. Believe it or not, I've NEVER tried a Cheesesteak in my life. Being from Chicago, we don't have Cheesesteaks. Here, it's about the Italian Beef Sandwich. Two VERY different, yet delicious sandwiches. After a long medical day, I strolled into the Longwood Galleria to scout out dinner to take back to my hotel room. The Longwood Galleria is basically a giant food court. The first place that caught my eye was Charley's. I figured there is no better time than now to try the cheese steaks! I ordered Charley's Original & Classic Steak Philly Cheesesteak. I also added an order of Charley's "Ultimate Fries". Their hand-cut fries are freshly fried and topped with cheese sauce, ranch, and bacon crumbles. They're so good you'll refuse to share! Be sure anyone with you gets their own order! The bread was delicious and soft. The steak inside was cooked perfectly. It was tender, delicious, and seasoned perfectly. No chewy/fatty/gristly pieces- which is what my worry was. It was so good I ordered them in for delivery again a few days later to my hotel. The food portion for the money is outstanding. Everything is hot, fresh, accurate, & packaged properly. Delivery is fast and hot. As a Chicagoan, I have to say the Italian Beef is still King. I went here on Tuesday, 2/23/21 as I was in between Medical appointments at BIDMC. This was my first visit to this chain and it will be my last. I ordered a Cheese Steak with onions, and on their suggestion of lettuce and tomato. Also I asked for Mustard. And an order of Fries. The Fries reminded me of a store brand frozen fry from 1960. Some were overcooked on one side and there was no salt or other flavor enhancer. They were dry and except for poor flavor, were flavorless. Now the Cheese Steak. It had almost all the ingredients I had requested except NO MUSTARD. Instead they put on MAYONNAISE! All in all a very disappointing meal. read more

This place is just garbage. I was excited when they opened a number of years ago because I love a cheese steak, and there are not really sub shops or delis in Longwood (Subway doesn't count, it's a vile 1-star compared to Charley's cruddy 2-star). But it was disgusting. Years later, it always has a lot of people in line and since today I was in the mood for a cheese steak, I gave it another shot. Maybe they'd improved... The meat is basically steak-ums. They should keep the flat top out of sight because it's so unappetizing to see the ingredients cook. Cheese steaks come with lettuce tomato and pickles by default, which I think don't make sense on a cheese steak. I got them anyway, and I can confirm that lettuce and tomato are bad ingredients for a cheese steak (even if the tomatos are fresh and juicy and red, which mine weren't, mine were hard and almost white). I couldn't tell you how the pickles are, they didn't give me any. Cheese steaks come with mayo by default. I'm not a fan at all so I asked for no mayo. I got to the pick-up part of the line, waited for a while, and they called 3 or 4 numbers after mine. It's an assembly line in which all sandwiches have the same basic prep process, so clearly something was holding mine up. I looked over and my sandwich is sitting in front of the guy. I realize they had put it on a roll with mayo and had caught the error, but instead of making a new batch of meat and sauteed veg, the guy was just waiting for a spatula to scoop it out of the mayo'd roll and onto a new one. And he couldn't even get that done in a timely fashion. So I wound up with a cheese steak with half the sauteed veg lost to the old roll, and mayo remnants remaining on what was transferred. It would have taken them like 15 seconds to cook up a new batch of steak-ums, and steak-ums are dirt cheap so tossing the incorrectly prepared one couldn't have been a financial hardship for them. I did not get fries today, but as I remember they are mealy and mushy and cold. I saw some come through on other people's orders and they looked the same as I remember. Charley's is miserable. But there's nothing more miserable than Subway, so it gets 2 stars from me. read more

I got the chicken and fries combo w onions, peppers, swiss and mayo. The fries were real potatoes. The chicken not so much. The chicken looked nothing like the hearty picture. The meat looked like thin slice deli meat put on the grill consistent with their steak. It was not very flavorful not even w the onions and one pepper slice. It was dry and no seasoning. Placed on a half flat like sub roll. You have your choice of siracha, hot sauce, salt and vinegar, salt, pepper, and ketchup packets that they give you and of course garlic parm, jalepeno-lime, or their own spice blend shakers for fries. I gave them two stars for their lemonade it was tasty. I got their peach one that had tiny chunks of fruit. If you are not a fan of chunks its definitely not for you. Not a bad cheesesteak in my opinion. I ordered a small combo. It comes with fries and a drink, total cost 9.54 with a specialty drink, strawberry lemonade, and regular fries. They take cards. Order at the register and walk down to pick up your food at the end. You can add typical sandwich toppings to any sandwich at no additional cost. Comes with ketchup in packets, you can grab mustard, any other condiment you have to ask for at the end. At first i was a bit disappointed by the way the meat, cheese, onions, peppers, mushrooms looked inside the sandwich, it looked too small, like i would just be eating a bread sandwich... Turned out ok. Tasted good and it was filling. Fries were crisp thick cut but not steak fry size. The best was the strawberry lemonade. The strawberry syrup they add to the lemonade makes it almost too sweet, but it was real strawberries in it. I haven't tried a Charley's since moving to Boston. The setup is a little different than the one in Hawaii on Schofield Barracks. The one in Schofield has the grill up front. It must of been one of those bad days at this location. After standing in front of the register for a few minutes the grill man called for some help. Enter the man behind the counter dragging a garbage bag full of trash. Great he's wearing gloves. Wrong! He then picks up a dirty wet rag and starts wiping the counter off while taking my order. He then began to prepare my order starting with touching the cup to make my drink. I stopped him right there and asked him if he would mind changing his gloves or atleast washing his hands. He said nothing and washed his hands and put the gloves on. The grille man then made me the most pitiful steak and cheese sandwich I've ever seen in my life. I actually asked him if he was serious when he presented it to me. I also noticed the man who originally took my order wearing the same gloves he wore while serving me handling money and preparing orders without a change.
