My first two years in the Navy were spent at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on South Broad Street in Philadelphia PA... At no point did I ever see a cheesesteak offered with tomato, lettuce, or pickles in Philadelphia... Onions, peppers, mushrooms, whiz, white American, or Provolone... Yes. Mayo, mustard, or ketchup on a cheesesteak would probably get you a beatdown there... Even with my preconceived notions by looking at their advertising, and passing Charley's up MANY times, I finally buckled and ordered a large old school cheesesteak while I was at the Jordan Creek mall food court a couple days ago. It was pretty tough to pass up Great Teriyaki which is my go to at JC mall...! I should have stuck with my instincts... The roll was fine. The meat had hardly any chop to it. More resembled Steak-umm slices... The chop probably depends on the day and the cook working the grill. No flavor. Maybe that's why they want to add all the other "stuff"...? Not a lot of meat either... No option to add mushrooms. The old school "cheesesteak" is served with cheese sauce... Online you don't have the option to upgrade to Provolone on this sandwich. I should have asked at the counter. In Philadelphia cheese sauce or whiz is more of a tourist thing... I prefer white American cheese. Seems overpriced for what you get. Does Charley's offer a decent sandwich? Sure. I guess... Would I call them a cheesesteak? Kind of... Maybe? More specifically...a Philly cheesesteak? No I wouldn't. I guess I feel a similar way about Charley's as I do about Pepper Jax and Capriotti's. Is it edible? Yes. Am I a fan? No. I don't buy the "steak" from Subway or Firehouse either... As far as cheesesteak chains go I'll pick Jersey Mike's EVERY time! I only wish the Des Moines metro could keep a good traditional cheesesteak shop open... We've had a few over the years, but they all close after a season or two. It seems like the only way to keep a cheesesteak shop open here is to offer other sandwiches (like cold cuts, deli, and other subs etc.) to supplement the menu and take the focus away from the actual cheesesteaks... Or to crud them up like Charley's does deviating from the "traditional" formula. Until we get another great cheesesteak option I'll continue to make them at home myself in my cast iron or on my Blackstone... Or hit up Jersey Mike's if I'm on the go. read more

We were thrilled to find Charlie's Cheesesteaks while visiting West Des Moines. I'm not sure if we even have one in Omaha anymore, so when we saw it in the mall food court, it was an easy decision for the whole family to eat there. I have loved Charley's and it is my go to. I can get a cheesesteak anywhere but will chose to fight the mall crowds to get it here. The 4 stars is because lately it's been off, the sandwich is just thrown together and the bread isn't as crusty and chewy, just crusty. Plus I wish it wasn't a food court stall. It would be so much better as a stand alone. Jordan Creek is just always so busy. But they always have samples and I appreciate that as I rush through the food court to shop. read more

If I could have had a worse experience at an eatery, I honestly cannot see how. I was first greeted by the man pushing samples in the food court at jordancreek town center, something I think is rude, as he blocks your path walking to other choices to eat. I decided that I had not eaten at Charley's for some time and that I would give it a try. I looked over the menu and selected a regular sized steak and pepperoni philly, which is more than 7 dollars and comes with nothing else. Being pressured by the manager, almost having no choice, I also added a cheese fry and a blueberry lemonade. 4 more dollars. For a total of 12.50 with tax. An outrageous sum, but if it taste good, it might make up for it. I received the meal and was dumbfounded by the lack of quality and food. Here is a list of things I found unsatisfactory: The amount of meat on the sandwich was very small, perhaps half what it should be. Their was very little cheese on the Philly, something that was very disheartening. The regular sized sandwich is maybe 8 inches long, extremely small for the price. The toppings were less than fresh, and fell right off easily. The bread was terrible and stale, very dry. All together not worth over 7 dollars. Next the cheese fries were very small and cold in the center! They also had barely any cheese on them at all, good thing I had some ketchup, but I ended without eating them all. Gross But most disgusting of all was the blue berry lemonade which was just normal box lemonade with a bunch of blue berry syrup at the bottom. I tried to shake and stir it, but it didn't mix at all. Today I was craving a sandwich and I figured it would be a great day to try something new. I had never heard of charleys but after seeing an add for it online I figured I would give it a shot. It's in the mall which if you are already there is a huge plus but if you just wanted the food it's a hassle to have to wade through the sea of people at the mall. When I got there it had a line which means one of two things either it's good or they are slow. They seamed to be getting the orders out quick so I'm happy because that must mean it's good. The mean has quite a few philly choices which is nice. I chose the #7 just a classic steak philly. I was asked if everything on it was what I wanted I said yes. I ordered a raspberry lemonade and a nacho deluxe fries. I got my lemonade and moved down the line. I quickly realized I was unaware what "everything on it" actually means. I have never seen a philly get pickles, mayo, tomato and lettuce on it until today when I saw them put it on mine. I figured what the heck why not I'm always up for something new. I got my sandwich and fries in less then 2 minutes and headed for home. The sandwich was actually quite nice. I liked the bread and the meat. The meat was juicy and had great seasoning and the bread was fluffy and had a great bite. I didn't really love the extra toppings but if I would have asked for it without it then I wouldn't have had the full experience. The fries were nice with the cheese, jalapenos, sauce with just a hint of bacon. The star of all of it though was my raspberry lemonade. I was really impressed and suprised by the quality of the lemonade and the fresh raspberrys were amazing. All in all this was a great trip and I am sure I will come back if nothing else for some fries and a lemonade. read more

Every time you order from here it is a disappointing experience. Either the sandwich is poorly made because they just threw it together or the employees have no customer service. They need to get it together. Charleys could be a highly satisfying place but it has been awhile since this location has been. Went here last night with my wife. Never again. The portion sizes are ridiculously small... Two pieces of thin chicken on a piece of rather dry bread, with one slice of cheese. More than that, quite literally one slice of tomato, and two banana peppers do not consitute toppings. We had to go back up, because they forgot one of our fries, they were unapologetic, and just as a side note, hair nets are required in a kitchen! So, all in all, poor hygiene, small portions at an exaggerated price, and terrible customer service. We won't be back. read more

I ordered the teriyaki chicken with all toppings (that he speedily said). My spouse ordered the California chicken. Also ordered a side to share of bacon cheese fries. I sat down and waited for my spouse to get through the line. I'm not confident their linemen are organized enough because it took a long time for anyone to get their order.
