3.5 STARS? Three different experiences: 1. Had them pick us up at our home. Driver was a little early but very patient as it took us until the scheduled time to be ready. Driver was friendly and fast and we were very pleased. 5 STARS 2. We returned and called from baggage claim as we were told to. Has to go through customs so we weren't supposed to use a cell phone. When we got out I saw I had missed a call from a non-Hawaii number (no message). When I called back the driver said he'd already left and we needed to call (and wait) again. Not friendly or polite. Disappointed. 1 STAR 3. Next driver came. Was fairly nice and got us home as expected. 3.5 STARS In general good experience but 2 out of 3 makes me a little disappointed. Scam If I could give zero stars I would. I was picked up with my husband on our honeymoon at the Honolulu airport traveling to Hilton Hawaiian Village. I was told it would be a flat rate of $29 which was advertised on Hilton's website. The driver confirmed the rate when he arrived at the airport but when he dropped us off at the Hilton he asked for almost $50 in cash. We asked to pay by credit card and he insisted by cash. We also explained that that there was a flat rate in which he also agreed to but he tried to say we had too many bags. The flat rate includes each traveler to have a checked bag and a carry on and we were in the limits. In the end we told him we would call the company and he quickly told us the total was $31. We paid by cash since he was refusing us to pay by credit card. We immediately informed the hotel and also called the company. The hotel seemed concerned but Charley's did not seemed concerned at all when we called. We just hope no one else has to deal with what we went through when working with this company and highly recommend going some place else. This is clearly a case of fraud and the driver tried to scam us into paying more money. Very disappointed in this company and Hilton for partnering with them. By the way the taxi cab driver we had was Charlie Young. We cannot remember the number of the cab but be aware if someone insists to have you pay by cash and is significantly different than the flat rates that were advertised. read more

Yay, I'm definitely a fan of Charleys. The starting fare is the cheapest on the island, I think its around 2.80? It is under $3 so that's a plusss I have never encountered a problem with them so far....they are available when The Cab isn't at the wee hours of the morning, accept credit cards, and they actually know where they are going....which is kind of important...I hate getting a "What? Made a reservation and they said I didn't need one but would take it anyway and told me to call when I land. Got to the airport. Couldn't get thru to call for pick up and was listening to hold music for 5+ min. Hung up. Got bags. called back. Said it would be 10 min. Waited 20 called back. Said no car had been dispatched and it would be 5 min. 10 min later I see a taxi from from here, with the driver looking around. It's not mind. He calls and tells me it will 5 more minutes. Seriously? This is my vacation - Id like to not spend it at Honolulu airport. 45 min later i am finally picked up. When I get in the car he tells me it's cash. Really? Looks like a credit card machine to me? Then he says ok, credit card it ok if you don't have cash. This is why people use Uber. read more

Was picked up at our condo for a flight to the airport. New clean minivan. Very polite driver who clearly had been driving Honolulu a long time - very competent, knew exactly what lane to be in, etc. Helped us load our bags. $29 flat rate, which was great considering rides to and from the airport can cost up to $48 if using a cab on a meter (by the way, meter will be running but don't stress, it is still $29) The reason I am not giving it a 5 is because I made an online reservation for an 11 am pickup. I got an email confirmation. At 11:05 am I called the office and asked if the driver was on the way. The dispatcher apparently didn't know I was being picked up and said she would have a car to me in 10-15 min. However the driver showed up in less than 3 minutes as we debating calling another company. So no harm done butr a few stressful minutes . (I ALWAYS call if the cab isn't there on time, no sense waiting when you aren't even on a pickup list....) A tip for airport trips - add 30 minutes to the usual amount of time you would allot. Once you get to the airport it is a crazy churning mess of people at the Hawaiian Airlines area, it is self check in (you even print your own bagtags, never seen that before!) and them you stand in a long line to turn in your bags. HA loads 40 min ahead of time, not the 25-30 min I am used to in California airports. read more

I give 5 stars for the taxi service FROM airport to Waikiki. When you get to the baggage terminal, just ask employees where to pick up the taxis. When you reach the taxi stand, you queue up and some woman asks how many in your party. Taxis are lined up and ready to go. Based on the amount of ppl in your party, you could get a mini van, you could get a sedan. Very efficient. It takes some time getting out of HNL airport until going onto the freeway. From there it is a pretty decent and scenic drive towards Waikiki. The speed limit is much more slower here than on the mainland but reminds me of driving in LB, laid back. On the way back from the hotel to the airport I give it 2.5 stars. We took a taxi at 6am and I quickly found out the taxi driver took the long way, going towards the zoo and up Kapahulu Ave, then making a left to get onto the freeway. I know Waikiki streets pretty well and knew something was not right. There was some traffic already building up but it took at least 30 minutes? When I got out of the car I told him I used to live here. Note to self-next time mention AT the beginning of taxi ride I know the streets and sit next to him in the front seat to navigate! read more

We needed a taxi for a 6 p.m. pickup at HNL on a Saturday. Eight hours in advance, I contacted two Honolulu, Yelp-reviewed companies that were offering one-way rides for 2 people at $28. Neither one of them could offer us transportation on 8 hours notice. I called Charley's. A dispatcher promptly answered the phone. For $29, they picked us up at HNL. They were on time. Driver was waiting for us when we exited the airport. The next morning, we had an ungodly early 5:45 a.m. departure from our hotel in Wakiki to HNL. Once again, driver was on time, and waiting for us at the hotel. Drivers were dressed in a uniform, polite, the van was clean and air conditioned. I texted dispatcher a couple of times, and was replied to within minutes. We have absolutely no complaints about Charley's Taxi, and would use them again. read more

I recently took Charley's Taxi from downtown to the airport. I used to live in Boston in college and would use cabs all the time. A 40 minute cab ride from Medford to Logan was $30. So I was a little surprised when the cab fare for a 10-minute trip to HNL airport was $23. But I guess that's what the rate is here so I won't fault it... What can you do. Overall I was a little disappointed in the experience. Here's what happened. +We got to the airport on time. -The cab was waiting for us at the wrong location, so she ended up finding us about 15 minutes late. -The seats were leather but were pretty brown and dirty. -This one blew me away--when we got in the cab, the lady asked what was the best way to get to the airport! I could see if we were in a remote location, but we were DOWNTOWN! -When we got to the airport, the fare was $23. I handed her two twenties and she looked like she was confused. When I asked for change, she had to pull out her personal wallet (don't drivers usually have a cash bag or something?) and scrounged for enough change to break my $20. She barely had enough, giving me two fives and 8 ones. I tipped her and she thanked me. She was a very nice lady but man, it must have been her first day or something. read more

I usually take Uber but had a doctors appointment where I was given some medication that makes me drowsy and faint. The doctor told me they can't let me go in an Uber but will call a medical taxi that provides door to door service for people that need assistance. I was told someone has to walk me to the door in case I faint. Once the medical taxi dropped me off at my place he acted as if I inconvenienced him by wanting to pay with credit card instead of cash. He didn't even offer to walk me to the door as I was told. I was too tired to argue with him as he clearly was in a rush to leave. I can't recommend this service at all. It's double the price as uber, less friendly and they don't actually provide any additional benefit compared to a normal Uber. Not sure what I paid extra for a medical taxi and why I tipped when I wasn't being helped. read more

I tried using this taxi company on three occasions. The first thing I noticed with them is that their fares are cheaper than The Cab. There are several small cab companies in Oahu, but Charley's is the cheapest, and unfortunately, not the most reliable. The first time I called was after a UH Football game at Aloha Stadium. I called and it took forever to show up. I called again and they dispatcher said that the cab should be there any minute. Well, one did show up, but he was just passing through so he accepted my pick-up. The fare was cheap and I was sort of happy. The second time I used them was to get to the airport. They showed up on time this time and the fare was much cheaper than The Cab. I was now starting to become a fan. The last time I used them was when I returned from my vacation and called and told them that I would be at the taxi dispatch area in front of Baggage Claim Area F. The dispatcher said he had one in the area so I waited. And I waited. Finally, the driver called my cell and wanted to know exactly where I was. I repeated the location and he said he would be there in a minute. about ten minutes later I called the dispatcher and explained that I waited over 20 minutes for the driver to show. I bypassed all the other taxis because I had called Charley's and did not want to leave the driver hanging. Well, I had to because the driver seemed to be lost and I was tired of waiting. The dispatcher did call me back and told me he was sorry for the confusion. I told him that I did wait and bypass many taxis but in the end, I had to pick up another taxi with a much higher fare. read more

I'm living in Hawaii and I have been using this service for 3 years, and my recommendations are 1) confirm that the flat rate applies before getting in and 2) never use credit cards. These are because the drivers do not know how to use the machine to charge us. They don't know how to switch from the meter to the flat rate, and the credit card payment system always confuses the drivers. One day, I was even told to give my driver my full name and phone number and meet him in person to pay the fee directly to him if the credit card later if the payment does not go through, which is insane and scary. The company needs serious efforts to educate their drivers and change the charging machine. I'd say Uber and Lyft are much safer and trustworthy. However, the customer service is usually very good, so whenever you have an issue, you can contact them to receive proper assistance. read more

First Experience: Taxi driver was friendly and arrived on time. Annoyed by the metered charging (as opposed to flat rate) for one stop along the way (literally along the street we were taking to the airport), and the malfunction of the credit card system that made a friend and I sit in the taxi for 15 minutes at the airport. Called about 10 minutes ahead of when I needed to be picked up at HNL airport. Had no issue finding the taxi driver or getting that great flat rate to Waikiki. Also was fun to speak with. Overall: I think it's a decent company, but that first experience was pretty bad. The other's were great, and I'd give 4-5 stars easily. We stayed at the prince Waikiki hotel. When leaving for the airport the hotel staff had coupons for a 29 dollar ride to the airport and on the slip you could use credit, debit, apple/android or cash. First, they were late and said the hotel cancelled out taxi(which they didn't). We then got in the taxi and handed him the slip he said it would be 31 with tax and that was fine since we were using credit. Very nice all the way to the airport and them he demanded cash from us and started yelling at my mom and getting very agitated that we weren't paying with cash. We then got charged twice by card. I'm not sure what the miss communication was but I'd recommend Uber or another taxi service if your in the Honolulu/Waikiki area. read more

We got a taxi from Chinatown to Sand Island (our car got towed). The person I spoke to on the phone was very pleasant. The taxi arrived in about 15 minutes. I did appreciate the quick response and multi texts when I set up my appointment with Charley's taxi - I needed for a medical procedure where I couldn't drive myself home. But the person who showed up at my house was an hour early. I was still asleep because he was too early. So I cancelled the appointment. A short time later the original person who set up the appointment called me and said they could send another person later but I'd have to be charged $25 on top of the original fee. I've used Charley's about four times in the past few weeks. I have no complaints about the drivers or the condition of the cabs--they're taxis, what do you expect? Two out of the four times I've had the dispatcher misunderstand me and send the driver to the wrong place to pick me up. Luckily, the driver always calls my cell phone to ask why I'm not there. I don't appreciate it looking like I'm not waiting where I said I would be. That small difference aside, Charley's is cheaper than the others I checked, and they have quite an enormous swarm of cabs around Honolulu. I will be using them again. read more

I like Charley's Taxi. They are very prompt and usually use minivans so are very roomy. A lot of HNL taxi companies use these big old beaters from the early 90s that look a bit long in the tooth. They also tend to be very slow when it comes to dispatching cars. Charley's Taxi is almost too fast. I found that they would show up at my location in Waikiki in less than ten minutes which is lightning fast in my book. The drivers all wear identical Red Reyn Spooner shirts for a uniform which is very professional. They offer a $29.00 flat rate from the airport to Waikiki which is a great deal. I liked Charley's a lot up until my last ride to the airport. I had to stop on my way and rather than run the meter to the destination and stop when I returned and add the flat rate to the fare, the driver just left it running the whole time to the airport and jacked the fare another $25.00. This was contrary to what the dispatcher told me when I booked the ride and what the driver told me at the start of the trip. When we arrived at the airport and I questioned this, the driver's ability to speak English evaporated. This cost his employers a five star rating. I hate getting rolled by cab drivers on my way home from vacation! read more
