I've been going to Charlie's for about a year now, after doing some digging around on Yelp for a car repair place with good reviews, and I have to say that his business is without a doubt the best I've ever gone to. First off, his prices are great and he has never charged me unnecessarily. He only charges you what he needs to for parts, and for little things like getting my engine codes read it was free, which is a huge change of pace from dealerships and other shops. Second, his customer service is phenomenal. For a lengthy timing belt replacement, he had one of his repairmen drive me to the local mall since I didn't have anything to do for that 6 hour project. He could have easily told me to just sit around and read some magazines, but he went that extra step to make sure that I wasn't bored while he was working. And another time, after getting my headlights replaced, one of the repairmen noticed that my taillights were out, so Charlie had them replaced completely free of charge. Third, and I guess most importantly, the quality of the work is great. Every issue I have had I've taken to Charlie's and they've been able to handle it, no matter the size. And whatever gets taken care of stops being an issue. No incompetent repairmen that accidentally put transmission fluid where engine oil is supposed to go or that can't seem to deduce how to change brake pads. They don't waste any time, the work gets done quickly, easily, and efficiently, and it is long-lasting repair. I won't need to come back in 3 months for the same issue. Charlie is very fair and honest. I dropped my car off on a Saturday for oil change and new breaks because they started to squeak... I paid in full for everything quoted no issue... Received a call from Charlie approx an hour later asking why I wanted my breaks changed I explained how I thought it as time he informed me I still had approx 90% of my break pads and there was no need to change them... When I went to pick up my car Charlie refunded me the the cost of the breaks without me even having to ask. He is very very honest I will defiantly be returning. It would of been so easy for him to just say he fixed everything and I would of never known any different. I was looking for a mechanic that provided good service and not looking into ripping people off. This place is honest, and fixed my problem in only a few hours. I dropped off my car so they can do a diagnosis. They called me about an hour later saying it was done and told me what needed to be done. I got a ride back to the shop to talk about my options (I didn't have to go back, I just wanted to talk in person). He told me that the diagnosis was free and I was free to take the car. Seeing that they were so nice about it, I left my car there so they can do the necessary repairs. Not only it took only a few hours, they did additional work to it with no additional cost. Okay about a week ago I drove thru some high waters in Fresno, my car jurked then slowed in speed until it stopped on me. I called AAA to tow me home when the driver asked what happened and he said sounds like a timing problem really expensive but he referred me to a good Mechanic Charlie's on Barstow. I had my 2001 Nissan Altima GXE with 185 thousand miles and many pre-existing issues towed in the next morning at 6:30am with a note that said what happened, my phone number and call me with a Quote? At 9ish they called me to say I had no timing issues but water and got two spark plugs wet and shorted out my distributor cap. I asked if he could check a few things out for me and he did within another hour they called with another qoute and said my car would be fixed and driveable by morning. Hallelujah fixed my plugs, cap, power steering hose, patched up leaks in other hoses 6 to be exact, axile, roters, oil change and one broken windshield wiper that stopped working a year ago for under 750 including parts and labor this place is my savior and my car purrs like a happy kitten. We own 2 Toyotas. We originally came here because our mechanic closed. After asking around the office I worked in, 3 separate people recommended him and the office is in downtown Fresno (no where near the shop). It's always amazing to me how quickly he gets the work done (even needing parts!). He's totally honest too! One time I was having problems with my blinker not working. After reviewing yelp we choose Charlies for the repair of our Acura. Well after several days of checking why their was no spark he told me it needs a new distributor. So i buy an entirely new distributor. How ever it turned out not to be the distributor. So he didn't charge the labor to install it but I'm out over $300 because he installed. He told me that i needed to take it somewhere else because he couldn't do the repair it, however the referral he offered was able to fix it. read more

Charlie is amazing. My husband and I have been going to him for the past 9 years. He is honest. He has told us what was wrong with our car before and then told us we should fix it ourselves because it is an easy fix and will save us money. There have been a few times when we have had to ask him to please do it for us because we didn't have the time. We have brought in our car to have the brakes fixed and some other things and he told us that we didn't need our brakes fixed yet, that they still had some good life in them. Recently, we were in LA and our car started accelerating without putting on the gas and we had a hard time getting it to stop (it was pretty scary). We called Charlie up and asked what might be causing it. He immediately told us our problem and we were able to pick up the part change it out and it was fixed. Charlie is full of integrity. Once you find a good mechanic you don't change. They are too hard to come by. We moved to Lemoore in 05' and we still drive our car the 45 min. to Clovis to have Charlie work on it. He is amazing. Brought my 2008 Lexus LS 460 with 208k miles (MSRP $80,000) to Charlie after Northside Lexus wanted my arm, legs, and maybe a kidney to replace 8 control arms worn out on the front end. Charlie did beautiful work, a fraction of the dealer price, and a great guy! My Lexus will go to Charlie for now on for everything. Now best to understand this. Charlie is a skilled and honest independent mechanic, great guy. Charlie fixes the cars, orders parts, answers the phone, does the billing, feeds the dog (Molly, great dog). Independent mechanic, business owner, business operator. He is not running a polished super-high-overhead repair shop on the high-rent I-45 feeder or Woodlands Parkway location with receptionists and front-counter people and "free" rentals and "free" car shuttle and "free" fresh-baked cookies. But turns out when you don't have all that overhead stuff and you have a great honest mechanic, he can absolutely destroy their rates! I mean - my gosh - thousands of dollars saved! And because of that he is popular - a line of cars can really form, a parking lot. So here is what you do. Bring it to Charlie's, Uber to Enterprise nearby or do a Turo if you want to treat yourself to something fancy, but rent for as long as it takes. He has a few days backlog of cars ahead of yours before he even can get to it? No problem - get the rental anyway, get your car in line. When he's done return the rental and Uber to Charlie's. My car had to wait in line and then some long-lead order parts, so I was on rental for a week and a half, but even with that cost I still saved A FORTUNE versus my alternatives. Charlie is the man. I am very aware of the fact that most shops up-sell you on other unnecessary services that end up costing a fortune. Many other shops use their manual, and not their brain to tell you what you need. No Charlie...on multiple occasions he actually dissuaded me from paying him more money to do work I thought was needed. Took my car in a week ago repairs costed $450 paid it went and got my car three days later check engine light came on so I went back to Charlie and within 2 hours he found the main problem which he had missed the first time. He then called me and said "your car is ready and it turns out I charged you for a repair that actually wasn't the problem so I'm going to refund you $263.00" so at the end of the day my car is running like new and I only paid $187 total to completely fix my car. It was repaired as promised within an hour of dropping it off. Charlie is no BS. He opens early 6 am on weekdays and 7am on Saturday. No shuttle service no real place to wait. after reading the good reviews about Charlies I wanted to find out if its all true and sure enough I went to him today for a check engine light on my Toyota Tacoma and in just about 5 minutes he told me what is wrong and what to do my self to fix it and I did what he said and the light never came back on after he cleared it and driving 25 miles. As luck would have it, the water pump went out on my son's 2007 Impala. We have a regular mechanic in Madera, but it's far and I wanted a shop closer to home. After a lot of research and reading online reviews, I found Charlie's. I called first thing in the morning - 5:41am to be exact, and he answered. I let him know I'd be towing the car and coming with the tow truck. He said "just write on a piece of paper what is happening with your car and leave the keys in the car." Saved me tons of time. That sealed the deal for me. When I showed up later the same day, the car was ready and the charge was reasonable. Also, I introduced myself to the owner. I told him his Yelp reviews were great and guess what, he didn't seem to know! That means he only cares about doing the right thing for the right reasons - I LOVE THAT! I think I found my new mechanic. These good little shops are slowly disappearing from America so let's do everything we can to keep the good ones in business!
