Engine light on (OH NO!), had to take it to a shop. Checked on Yelp, Charlie had good reviews. After going to other auto shops throughout the years, and taking my auto a short way down the street from Charlies last year, being quoted over $500.00 for non-existence problems I tend to get nervous when I have auto problems. I could write a small book on the ways Auto and Tire shops have ripped me off, or tried to. Charlie lived up to the standards that the Yelp reviews gave him. He did a diagnostic test and found it was an insignificant factor. He fixed it and told me there would be no charge for the test or anything else. I felt obliged, had him replace all drive belts that were due to be replaced. Within a short period of time he did the repairs, charged me a reasonable price. Out of curiosity I had my daughter call the place down the street I had problems with, to get a quote for the same work done, they were going to charge twice as much. Not counting non-existent problems they would claim to find. Charlie also gave me advice about my other auto that saved me over $700.00 on unnecessary repairs a smog shop recently told me I needed. Four years ago, I dropped off my truck at Charlie's Automotive to get my brakes replaced. They were squeaking loudly, and there was some vibration under braking load. I had dropped my vehicle off at 7:45 AM, and by 8:30 I had received a call stating that my truck was ready. He mentioned that he didn't replace the brakes, just gave them a cleaning, and rotated my tires while he was at it. I asked what the charge was, and he said, no charge, just bring the truck back to him when the brakes were ready. This type of honesty and customer service is refreshing and rare in the auto repair industry, and has won my business permanently. Flash forward to 2015 - Dropped my truck off at 7:45 to have brakes done, get a call at 9:00 AM that my truck is ready. These guys are great. Charlie is a straight forward guy. He's never tried to sell me on unnecessary repairs and goes out of his way to make sure my van is in good shape before I get it back. The last time I was here I had blown a spark plug at the end of my work day. He was the only guy in town who could get me a quick turn around time. Charlie is good peoples. He sometimes has his twin sons working with him. They all know what they are doing. Anyway, he'll give you a an honest work on your vehicle with a fair price. NOT CHEAP, but fair. I find that cheap as far as mechanic work goes usually means poor workmanship. I have had my car taken to places where they charged really cheap but broke things at the same time. And to be honest, most people see mechanics like car salesman, conniving, greedy, will do anything to make a buck. Not Charlie. He'll tell you how it is. He's been doing this for years. Trust Charlie. Don't take your car there for a simple oil change or what have you which you don't need every 3000 miles. The lube companies tell you that you need to do that. Your car can go above 8000 miles without an oil change, don't get it twisted people! But that's besides the point. If you need for instance a major tune up, parts that you can't replace yourself, etc, take it there. His twin boys are also highly knowledgeable with import cars so if you're into suping your car up, go to one of them. Don't be afraid of his dogs there either which usually roams around his shop. They are friendly as can be, but I highly doubt they're friendly when everyone is gone and the shop is locked up if you know what I mean. read more

I'm new to Clovis/Fresno. I go to grad school at Fresno State. I have a 2006 Element. It's been great, but now I am putting it to the test driving back to LA every weekend. On a TH the belt started making noise, and the car was hard to start, then died. I took it to Charlie--based on Yelp reviews--and he was GREAT! I needed my Air Conditioner serviced on our 2006 Acura TL with 200K miles. I dropped the car off at 4:30 in the afternoon because it is not possible to drop it off in the morning, which is what they asked when I called. Charlie is VERY efficient signing you in. My car was done at 7 am the next morning. Recharging the Freon and putting in blue dye was $133. Will report back if further repairs are necessary. Charlie said that the $133 was guaranteed for six months (I would not have to pay for any more Freon, just repairs if necessary) Check out Hacienda Tequila nearby on Clovis Ave. +++++++++ Update: After about 3 months my AC stopped cooling, NOT CHARLIE'S FAULT. The car had been sitting for two weeks and when I used it the AC was not working. The problem with my AC system was the small schrader valves (like Tire valves) on the recharge ports.  They were leaking coolant.  The shop replaced them and recharged the system for no charge. I paid $130 to have the system evacuated and recharged and that came with a 6 month guarantee that I would not have to pay for any more freon.  Instead of charging me for troubleshooting and replacing the two 50 cent valves, Charlie's automotive did it for free. Charlie knows that he has a loyal customer as a result.  Charlie is smart.  Be like Charlie. I am a car guy who changes his own oil and is a bit of a car geek. I was searching Yelp for a good auto service shop and decided to take the advice of the many satisfied customers that 5 starred Charlie Automotive. I provided all of the parts for a complete tune up, power steering in and out pressure lines and front & rear brake job. Super friendly and helpful. I went in on a Friday because my check engine light came on. Charlie did a diagnostic and cleared the error for free. Told me to come back if the error comes back on. I can't express how happy I am with Charlie's. I had the check engine on in my Saturn Vue. I dropped my car off at 7 am (no appointment required) this morning and Charlie called me with a diagnosis at 7:30 (spark plugs needed replacement) and gave me a responsible quote. So after two weeks of trying to fix my car on my own I thought I better call a mechanic. So I did Charlie answers I tell him what's going he said it was strange and that he would charge $40 to diagnose it. That seams extremely fair considering the car dealership wanted $140! Any who he tells me drop it off early in the morning and so I did around 630am and a couple hours later he finds the issue (some faulty wiring) and tells me the price to fix it was going to be $143.98. He says it will be ready by 2pm I told him I may have to leave it because I have work at 2pm and he says he'll try to have it ready ASAP I tell him not to worry. Charlie is fantastic! I went to Firestone because my brake lights went on, and left my car there all day. When they finally called near closing, they recommend having the brakes adjusted and cleaned, but said they couldnt do it that day. I dropped off the car at opening the next day and again waited until almost closing (I had to call and check), paid and went out to get my car which looked suspiciously parked at just the angle I had left it, wondering if they had done anything... And the brake lights came on again the next day. The next weekend I went to Charlie's just to have someone different look at my car - he said the brake fluid was a little low and topped it off. He also checked my alternator and battery (I had killed my battery recently when I bumped the light on in the morning and gone to work), and he didn't charge anything! All this in less than 2 hours! After reading many very positive reviews about Charlie's, I decided to take my 2009 Toyota Corolla with 105K miles on it to him. Charlie isn't concerned about impressing customers with a fancy office, a deluxe waiting room with coffee or idle chit chat. He keeps his overhead to a bare minimum.... and that's a good thing. He is able to keep his prices very reasonable. I left my car with him at 8:00 and received a call back that it was ready to go at 10:15. He fixed an annoying noise that I thought would wipe out my savings account. It did not. It was only a frozen bolt(?). In addition to finding and fixing the cause of the noise my car was making, he changed my oil, adjusted the serpentine belt and installed my windshield wipers all for a surprisingly low cost. My car had a faulty wire repair done here and caught fire with an entire family trapped inside. He didn't seem to Care when I called to inform him.
