My server Miracle made me feel very welcome from the start when ordering. I got the onion rings for an appetizer and I was VERY impressed with the good quantity and quality of them all. I got the jumbo shrimp dinner that came with a house salad and baked macaroni. Both were absolutely delicious and that baked mac HAS to have won some awards, its THAT good. This a old school locals restaurant but the food is good and the servings size are big. I got the Bywater Yuppie and added alligator sausage. The omelette was cooked great and had good flavor. The toast had plenty of butter like I enjoy. The wait staff was super attentive, and greeted me just after I sat down. The worked well as a team helping each other with clearing plates and refilling beverages. The menus is very large but it is like many breakfast lunch and dinner restaurants all in one menu. They have all American and Cajun choices. I believe anyone can find something here. The prices are fair and you can tell the people are local and come here regularly. This is a great spot with some good food and a nice bar. The prices are quite reasonable for the huge portion sizes of food you get and the beers are also a great value. If you're travelling from New Orleans you get to enjoy riding through some beautiful oak trees beside the road that form an arch over the road in some spots. The only real negative I've had here is that the service is sometimes less than perfect and might forget some of your order so you have to remind them sometimes. They do have changing daily specials and they offer a really good selection of New Orleans style food along with friendly service. They also do quite a nice brunch on Sunday and offer some items you probably won't even find in the city limits of NOLA. They have an impressively sized menu with MANY excellent choices that should please most tastes. Overall this is a nice spot to visit that also usually provides a pleasant drive from NOLA so it is a worthwhile endeavor to visit and experience this joint. Decided to order takeout from Charlie's one night with my parents. We called to place our order and they went to pick it up. I ordered the loaded baked potato with fried shrimp (I've had it a few times and it's always good) and my parents ordered the stuffed shrimp with macaroni. When they came back with the food and we opened the plates we realized that their stuffed shrimp were pretty dark. They decided to try it and could not eat it. They said it had a funny smell and the shrimp were very hard. Seems like it may have been old stuffed shrimp that were just sitting in the back of the freezer. They called the restaurant and brought the food back. They replaced the stuffed shrimp and made them some new ones. These were better and you could tell they were fresher (even though it was still pretty dark). However they were pretty salty. Seems that some things in the menu there can be hit or miss. read more

This was my second time eating here and this restaurant is one of the best Secrets in the city. It is a top notch restaurant. Their menu has a huge variety in it and they do everything well. Bring an appetite because the portions are big and the food is amazing. Dinners, sandwiches everything is packed full of flavor. The marinara sauce is some of the best. Ordered the debris fries and that's kind of a let down. It's just rally's fries with roast beef and gravy, the roast beef isn't even shredded up it came with huge chunks. The shrimp poboy I ordered a half a poboy and I was also charged for that but surely didn't seem like half-if that is half I'd love to see the full size poboy. The shrimp poboy was good, only complaint is the bread, they can use better bread but by no means was it bad. There's a decent amount of seating, low lighting. I just had a Cajun po'boy. Shrimp and sausage. I ordered the full size and it was HUGE. Tasted great. Sausage was outstanding. Prices are reasonable. Picture is what I have left of the sandwich and a small order of fries. Enough for tomorrow. The don't have draft beer but the bottled was reasonable. Atmosphere was cafe style, nothing fancy. Po boys of all types, seafood , several down home plates ( mamas rump roast , crawfish bisque, award winning gumbo and the Veal Swiss baby!), HUGE salads , great steaks and BBQ ribs are all available daily/ nightly . Awesome omelette and breakfast are served daily from open til 2 pm. And a must have dessert is the strawberry beignets ; a one of a kind delight with fresh hot strawberry beignets , vanilla ice cream , whip cream caramel and strawberry sauce drizzled over it all . The decor is nothing fancy but does have some local pieces done by local artists on the walls . A fully stocked bar and several big screen TVs are there too. Service is always great with each sever being friendly and having unique personality. Always great service. Plenty parking but it is on a busy highway in a dimly lit area. My favorites are the Veal Swiss Baby - paneer thin cut veal with Swiss cheese melted over it and covered with sautéed onions and brown gravy, usually served up with mashed potatoes with brown gravy and their amazing green beans that are loaded with bacon and spices! Busy place, good service, but food was just okay. Now maybe this is because I opted for fried chicken at what seems to be more of a seafood place, but if it is on the menu, I expect it to be good. The chicken coating was awesome, but it was more moist than the chicken under it. I got a 2 piece meal, which was two very small pieces - a wing and what looked like a small thigh but was white meat. We returned to Charlie's because we needed to satisfy our craving for a real Cajun PoBoy. Our server was very pleasant and very helpful making good recommendations . We were served bread and butter to start. The bread was really too dry to eat. The shrimp they used in the PoBoy was great. Unfortunately the bread was also very dry and stale. It was toasted but this was not just a toasted dry - it was dry like it had been sitting out a while. They included way too little lettuce and the tomatoes tasted old. We ate the shrimp off the sandwiches and left most of the rest. The portion sizes are HUGE. We ordered half size po boys and a shared order of onion rings and it was way more than we could eat. We also ordered fried pickles which were really good. The spicy sauce was interesting- I believe it had vinegar and hot sauce or spices in a ranch base. I love spicy sauce but preferred the ranch this time. I hate giving Charlie's three stars because we were so impressed the last few times we traveled here.
