This place is good for what it is. Don't go in expecting a typical/modern dining experience, everything here is very old school. Even the humor from the waitress is old school; asking my boyfriend if the lady (me) can be trusted with a knife?? You can definitely tell the usual customer demographic, and it's very hometown-esk. Personally not my vibe. I actually went once before and really didn't like it. Last time I got the eggs Benedict (my favorite), and it was just not good. I wanted to give this place another chance, and this time I opted for a breakfast sandwich. Definitely not bad, but tasted like I got it from Dunkin. Very middle of the ground, nothing great. You probably either like this place or you don't. It's so small and I'm sure has its regulars. The plus side is the prices are great. But this place is not for me. Charlie's was a dandy little diner we found during our recent trip to Cleveland. The first thing you notice is the very flashy looking exterior of their building which I thought looked awesome. The inside of the building is quite small with limited seating but was very well kept and clean. Their menu consists mainly of breakfast options and hot dog options. I went the hot dog route trying a Chili Dog and one plain with stadium mustard. The stadium mustard was just a dijon variation and was fine. Their chili was excellent with great flavour and just delicious on the dog. The dogs themselves were 100% beef and were the best part as it should be. Great flavour and a nice snap to them they were just stellar. The onion rings I got as a side I would rate as average. The service was pretty darn good for us as well. The food was good - my mom says it was one of the best Benedict's she's ever had, it was delicious. She had the florentine Benedict. I got the Charlie's special, I didn't specify my dairy allergy, just asked for no butter on my toast - when I get the same thing at Perkins while specifying my allergy I have a reaction every time - here I had ZERO reaction to the food. I am delighted. If you want to go to some high end place that charges $30 for a mediocre burger, and serves their fries with garlic aioli to be "special" this place isn't for you. It seemed like a very reasonable classic diner, neon signs were cool, and the niche interior was CHARMING. The waitress was very nice - not in the "robot smile" way - but in a genuine way, she engaged in some fun banter and teasing, and it felt good to feel a more relaxed atmosphere. The woman who served us said she was also the manager - props to her! It felt comfortable and I can't wait to return - no wonder there are so many regulars. read more

Charlie's is great! My husband and I moved to Old Brooklyn in June 2021 and have been wanting to go here since we did. Charlie's is only a breakfast/lunch spot though so frequently by the time we'd remember they'd be closed. Fast forward to today and we remembered in time to go for lunch. Inside you'll find a small and aged diner with mostly counter seating and a few two-tops squeezed in. The waitress working the counter was quick and friendly - it's clear Charlie's has been her place for years the way she nimbly and efficiently gets orders out and waits on all the customers. My husband got a Chicago dog and a diner dog (which comes with coleslaw and chili). I got the Cleveland dog which comes with Bertmans mustard and chopped onions. We split some fries that were perfectly crispy. The breakfast menu also looked like classic diner food - the kind of greasy spoon you look for. We'll be back for breakfast and lunch soon. read more

Living in Old Brooklyn for over 11 years I've passed this place a million times. I was really craving a hot dog so I decided it was time to give them a try. Service is friendly but very slow. I wasn't in a hurry so it was not a huge deal. I got a chili dog and fries and it was delicious. I think my portion of fries was a bit skimpy but ahh well. I really hate to change my review from 5 stars to 1, but we had such a bad experience on the morning of 12/23/2023 I can't ignore it. We called this morning for carryout and asked to order Charlie's Omelette, which is exactly the name of an omelette that is on the menu. The lady on the phone said: "okay are you going to tell me what f****** omelette you want? Or are you people going to f*** with me all day? I'll answer the phone after 30 seconds next time." Literally stunned because it's 8 in the morning and we had the f bomb dropped on us multiple times within 15 seconds of a conversation. My husband actually asked if she was talking to us, thinking maybe she was talking to someone in the restaurant. In which she responded by saying "oh did I throw you off, okay what do you want then?" We responded with, "what? Okay I think we're going to have to pass" and she sarcastically told us to have a nice day and hung up. We know Charlie's isn't the most polished, we've been loyal customers for years and have loved how relaxed the environment is. But common courtesy is different. That was shockingly rude. I will not recommend Charlies to anyone until this staff member is removed. read more

I come to this place almost once a week but never on a sunday! Today was terrible. I never in my life had bad customer service like today! The lady with the short red hair made me feel so uncomfortable! I ordered soft bacon and egg white. It come out cold ok I'm not mad because it happens . I'm a waitress. So I ask for my food to be made hot. As my food is coming back out the the lady with the red short was very nasty and said "I need to burn the top of my mouth!" I'm happy exited to eat ! I enjoyed my meal at Charlie's, and I think I can explain the way the Yelp reviews careen between 1's and 5's. This place is OLD and old-style. It opened in 1952 but might as well be from the 1930s. It's teeny (just a counter and about a dozen stools), the menu is old-school (burgers, hot dogs, breakfast anytime), the food is all cooked to order, and the service is very friendly (the waitress calls you hon) . The down side of that is it's teeny (no restroom) the menu is old-style (no salads), it takes a while to get your food, and the waitress really slings the hash. Your impression will be decided by what you honestly like and enjoy. If what you like (be honest now!) is swanky leasehold improvements and a waiter who crouches down to introduce talk about the chef's philosophy of locally sourced ingredients, walk you through the menu, and keeps checking if everything is done to your liking this is probably not the place for you. If what you enjoy is a trip back in time, an almost antiquated menu and cooking methods (i.e., no delivered pillows of soup, or dozens of burgers sizzling on the grill waiting to be ordered), and a waitress who addresses you with a genuine human warmth, you'll love it. I love hot dogs. I love places that are comfortably integrated in countless ways. I hate putting on airs. I loved the totally original decor. Was it the best, cheapest, most wonderful food ever? No. But it was a heck of a lot of fun. It reminded me of places I went with my dad 50 years ago or more. Charlie's Restaurant is a time machine back to when small and weird places reigned supreme. There are two large wooden dog cut outs by the former take out window beckoning travelers to stop in. Charlie's sits on the corner of the Brookview Shopping Center parking lot. There are plenty of lottery tickets to play while waiting for food. There are 4 separate signs telling players that the scratched off silver shavings should not be left on the floor. They serve hot dogs, hamburgers and breakfast food. On a Painting Job first day and just up road, ordered Patty Melt to go. Sat down waited, then stood up to wait giving my seat to others to dine. I waited close to 45 minutes till this happened..... What really got me are several things.There is almost no room in the place so your smashed up against a wall, no bathroom I think is against health regulations? Can see one person cooking on a tiny grill in back with guy standing behind her doing nothing at all. Waitress, Stout blonde lady in tight clothing looks at me and says, "Do you want to cancel your order? (I pre-paid for) Do you want you money back? loudly and contentiously in front of whole tiny place, looking at me now. I said, I didn't say one word to you did I? I'm standing here waiting quietly, and even gave up my seat for others. I'm not going to go hungry today but thanks! Then she spouts off loudly still-"we make everything fresh here" AS/IF lady (I didn't say) I can grill a hamburger in under 10min! WHAT are you grinding the Beef? Maybe the distressed look on my face first day at a job taking off for lunch and not coming back prompted her to target me and try to make it about me? One hour to get a frigin hamburger! This was my first visit. I took my young daughter for waffles. It was clean and inviting! I love sitting at a counter it is a retro experience. The waitress and cook were very charming and friendly. I had a waffle and eggs and bacon. It was cooked perfectly! Daughter had a waffle and chicken! If you're looking for outstanding service don't bother. Charlie's is a dive diner literally located in the corner of a parking lot. The building is small, seats 10-15 tops, please dont sneeze the place might collapse. The regulars have their seats there. My first visit there I apparently sat in one of those seats. Prior to even getting a cup of coffee the cook came out and told me to stand up. I did, she then took the seat off the post. I wasn't going to argue, she was a beast and could probably kick my ass. It's been said and it's worth saying again, they have no bathroom, none and you can't wash your hands either. This was a disaster when I brought my young kids there. After waiting 30 minutes for 2 dogs and fries the food finally came. It was not very good at all. Worst fries too. I've eaten there a half dozen times, or so, and have ordered take-out just as many. It's a great LITTLE place with friendly people running it. Basically, it's what you expect to find inside, after seeing the outside. It's clean, it's slightly cluttered, and it's been weathered by time. (Wouldn't change a thing.) The prices are cheap and the food is tasty. (Which is prepared by 2-3 ornery women, which have to deal with the even more ornery regulars, but still make it a point to put good food on the plate.) -If not just to keep us shoveling food in our face and our mouths shut. (You know what I mean.) The seating is bar-style with around twelve round, slightly-padded stools. And, in most mornings, you can't find a vacant seat in the house. They also have a nearly decipherable 14" tv hung in one corner, with something truly life-altering airing, for your viewing enjoyment while you wait the five minutes, or so, for your food preparation. Can't beat the parking though. (Given it's location.) Bottom line is that I love the joint, and I feel late to the party for all the times I had driven-by without stopping in for a bite.
