My mom and I were not fans of our grilled cheeses at all. They were extremely basic and honestly I could make a better one at home for a small fraction of the price. The other food we had though was great. The blue cheese dip was especially amazing for me - so creamy and delicious. We might go back but will definitely avoid the grilled cheese if we do. Tried this place for the first time tonight. They were out of the pierogis and fried green tomatoes. Then we ordered chicken fried chicken. It's supposed to come with cheddar cheese grits and bourbon bacon glazed green beans. The grits were a cold congealed heap, no cheese flavor whatsoever, the green beans were just unseasoned fresh green beans. The chicken was delicious, that's the two stars. It was actually a bit of poor fortune that brought us to Charlo's in Springfield; my wife's mother was in at Springfield Regional for some recovery following a heart issue, so after a brief visit with her, we elected to find some dinner before heading home. And, really? From 20 years ago when I was a Wittenberg student? Downtown Springfield has really started to come alive. And Charlo's is yet another sparkling droplet along Fountain Ave. We were seated almost immediately; our server was friendly and personable, who seemed genuinely happy to see us. For a weekday, the restaurant was about half full, though more tables started filling around the 7pm hour. The food, though? A true winner. The chicken-fried-chicken was moist, with a crunchy crust/breading, but the gravy is really what made it sing. The white cheddar grits might have used a touch more cheese, but were still phenomenal. And the green beans? Exactly the way I never got them as a child: flavorful, crisp, delicious. My plate was *cleaned* by the end. My wife's steak was cooked exactly to her specification, though she really appreciated their roasted brussels sprouts and potatoes even more. And, our daughter outright gorged herself on an upscale mac and cheese that had me drooling. I know we'll be back to Charlo's. It's well worth your time and money! read more

My first time visiting Charlos! Got the butchers cut tonight and it was fantastic! Came with salted spuds and Brussels sprouts. I was thinking they'd be mashed potato's, but we're the home fry type. Enjoyed a lunch with my wife and friend Diane. Dropped in after reading Yelp reviews and they weren't wrong. Our server was Amanda and she was genuine and happy. Gave suggestions and was fun to talk to. We had fried green tomatoes, shrimp Po Boy, catfish po boy with sweet potato fries and perogies. Everything was good, the restaurant is nice and clean. We wanted a place halfway between Dayton and Columbus to meet our son. Charlo's was perfect! We were seated immediately around 11:30 on a Saturday morning and started with the fried green tomatoes and Nashville hot chicken appetizers to share. Chicken was good but the fried tomatoes are served with pimiento cheese and red pepper jelly...the combination was a heavenly mix of crunch, creamy, and sweet spicy! I would order it every day. We also had the catfish po'boy (very tasty with yummy tartar sauce), the fried chicken sandwich, and the Cobb salad with a scoop of chicken salad. If you like chicken salad, you will love theirs! Charlo's was recommended to me when my original choice wasn't available. I honestly didn't know it was there, although it's been a while since I'd been downtown Springfield and I knew some new places were set to open. I was there for lunch, and I found the menu to be very interesting. My friend ordered the Black Bean Burger with a cup of the soup of the day (Roasted Red Pepper & Gouda). I ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich with Poblano Pepper Pimento Cheese along with chips on the side. Both my friend and I found the sandwich buns to be less than they could be, so we opted to leave the bun. My friend reported that her burger and soup were very good, and she'd definitely order them again. My chicken was good, but JUST this side of being overcooked. The flavor was good, tho. I was very disappointed with the pimento cheese. You could BARELY tell it was there, so that was disappointing. If that is your big twist for upgrading the sandwich, then there ought to be a good bit of it!! I wasn't sure what the 'seasoning' was supposed to be on the chips, but it wasn't very distinctive. I left them on the plate along with the bun. My experience will NOT deter me from returning!! The menu is very creative and inviting, but there just seems to be a disconnect with the execution. Downtown Springfield in the Dora district. First time here but love the owners food truck. The dinner menu is a bit more upscale. I had a cobb salad which was huge and delicious and my husband had the salmon over baby herbed potatoes. The salmon was delicious. Crisp on the outside and moist inside. Dessert was peach cobbler cheesecake which came with individual tiny bottles of milk! So cute. Service was great. Ambiance is retro industrial. The waiter tells us they are hoping to have wine and beer in the future. We will definitely return. read more
