Went here last month during a staycation and it was pretty good! My husband and I enjoyed most of our dishes, except for the steak, which was over cooked. We requested medium rare but received it well done. My husband didn't want to waste food so he still ate it, but we told our server afterwards. The service here is excellent-- the manager came over to apologize and they gave us dessert on the house and also took our salad appetizer off the bill. We appreciated this gesture and would come definitely come back. The kimchee calamari, salad with the golden beets (I forgot what it's called) and sea bass were all very good. The sea bass was cooked nicely and had a nice flavor, but I didn't care for the the mango "sticky rice." It was kind of a weird consistency/texture-- not at all what sticky rice is supposed to be but I would still order again just for the sea bass. read more

The ambiance of this restaurant was very nice, (lots of people were dressed nice for dinner) it's right along the water so there are tables right by the window that presents a great view. We shared the mojito flight and it was a bit strong for my taste but it was nice to sample the different flavors my favorite was the Mango, then it would be the blackberry and I'd say the orange was my least favorite. I got the prime rib and the server let me know that the chef recommended medium. I think it's all based on preference, I didn't find anything special about it but it was good. read more

Came here on a week day and had dinner reservations at 4:30 pm. It was nice and empty and just opened at 4:00. We were seated by the window and had a wonderful view of the bay. Garret was our waiter. Very attentive and great service. I noticed he was consistent with all of his customers too. So, hopefully you get him too! I ordered the dinner meal that came with clam chowder, miso salmon with green beans, and chocolate lava cake. My husband ordered the all you can eat salad from the salad bar. While waiting for our dinner to arrive, we got two baskets of warm bread- yum! Also, after dinner, I was nicely surprised with a slice of mud pie for my birthday! Everything was so delicious. Came by for happy hour: weekdays 4-6pm. Had a pretty good selection of drinks and bites. We tried the fish tacos- grilled not fried, the coconut shrimps, Kim Chee calamari, and lobster tartare. Tacos were not bad, fish not over cooked. As you can see in the picture, calamari was a huge portion for only $10! Lobster tartare was just ok, wouldn't get that again. I have enjoyed eating here over the years but this may have been the last time. The only thing great was the Lobster bisque. Let's start at the beginning of our evening. We were seated and greeted kindly and professional. Our waitress Leslie comes to the table and she was horrible. She has no business working in a restaurant that she is expected to work. She took our order of drinks which included teas, sodas, tap water, bottled water and bottle of wine. After 10 minutes had bread delivered by someone else. We are still waiting for our drinks from Leslie. She kindly brings the bottled water and sets it down away from the person who ordered it. We asked for our water and other drinks. She said they are coming from the bar. Really water in a pitcher can only come from the bar? Finally another 10 minutes pass and we get drinks minus the water. We asked again for water and now have.... Hahaha, oh nobody brought you water. No, you said you would bring the water. Finally she brings water and manages to spill water on the table with ice, over fills the glasses of water, we now have more water on the table. Nobody found this funny or cute. Leslie finally takes our order after she poured the water and never asked if we were ready to order. My husband had to get her attention so we could get our food ordered. The food comes out at different times so by the last time someone got their food the other people were half way done. The quality of the food was average. 3 steaks were over cooked and don't waste time asking for something different since she takes so long. Leslie checked in on the table when we were almost finished eating not during the meal. Refills for water, not from Leslie, we had to get it from someone else who was willing to do their job. Our sides were cold and I'm guessing Leslie let our food sit for a while since the plates were not hot. The quality of the food is average not the great quality that the restaurant once had. Ordered a bottle of wine and she did the proper wine tasting at the table and poured the glass. She then sets the bottle away from the people drinking the wine and places it in front of someone not drinking. When she checked in at the end of our meal didn't offer to pour more wine in glasses that restaurants should offer. We are not eating steak and wine at Denny's. Maybe the food would have been great if served when ready instead of steak that was chewy, over cooked and cold. The dinner was supposed to be a special dinner for someone in the party. While we had bad service she also provided subpar service to another table. That table complained and she was rude and very combative. The manager came to the table and Leslie still had a chip. I am sure she is nice but this type of behavior should not have to be tolerated by customers. The restaurant really needs to do better. I am somewhat mixed on my review with this one. First the positives, easy location to get to, restaurant in the classic Chart House style. Salad bar was great although I believe they used to mix your Caesar Salad for you however this may have stopped a while back. I think the menu pricing is decent yet as expected still in the pricey side. We had filet and king salmon which were both great. I wish the sides came out in separate little dishes as opposed to on the plate but that's fine. My two boys were highly disappointed there was no option to add a salad bar onto their kids meals, I think the chain is missing revenue here. The salad is perishable so make a kids option for $10 to add onto their meals, and yes require an adult to be with them at the bar. Also my wife and I shared the king salmon (we always just share one dish), I added the salad bar on for $16 just for me. When the bill came it was $29 for the salad bar. When I asked why I was told because we only ordered one entree and they are not able to ring in the salad bar as an add on if only one entree and two people. I found this irrating but not going to make a big deal out of it. I highly recommend revising this policy. Other than that very beautiful views and service was pretty good. If you are on vacation and want a nice night out consider as an option only if you will get the salad bar as in my opinion is the highlight especially if you enjoy a nice Caesar and caviar which is in the bar. Not gonna beat around the bush on this one. I really want to like this restaurant, its ambiance, decor, service, friendly staff, beautiful views and attention to detail (except on the food itself). My problem is with the food served here during my visit. 1) Raw oysters. While seemingly fresh, 4 of the 5 people in my party that ate them became very ill with food poisoning. The 5th person (me) came out of the experience *mostly* unscathed...I can only believe this was due to the *generous* amounts of alcohol I had with my meal. One of my party that got sick from these oysters was trying them raw for the first time; I don't imagine he'll have an appetite for them ever again. 2) Both prime ribs at our table were super rare when both were ordered medium rare. It shows a lack of attention to detail or lack of pride. With a cut like this, it's visually obvious the cook of the meat before serving it... 3) The cod was undercooked. This delicate, fatty fish shouldn't have so much trouble pulling its flesh apart. 4) Their famous lava cake did not flow chocolate lava at all. We ordered two and neither did. Again, lack of attention to detail? Or lack of pride? Now that said, this is a delicious cake. But it was missing its namesake lava element...overcooked it seems. Where's the finesse? My friend and I went to this restaurant on a Friday night and without a reservation, it was a little hard to get a table, however, they let you sit yourselves at the bar and that's what we did. They offer full menu at the bar as well as drinks. Our bartender also offered to be our server as we opted to order food and eat at the bar! He was very attentive and helpful both with both the drink and restaurant menu. We got a few appetizers that he recommended as well as one entree that we both shared. The place is very pricey but we figured that it will be given its location. - Coconut shrimp: I wish they gave more of this tbh! The dips they provide with it is super good! I swear I can eat a whole pan of it. - Prime Rib Sliders: when we got this one, it was already cold. It had steak and cheese and the sauce that they put in it complemented it well. We enjoyed this dish as well! - Mac Nut Mahi: he split our entrees in two different plates without us even asking for it which is a plus! However, we didn't really like this meal as much! The fish was too bland as well as the rice that came with it. A little disappointing as this place specializes in seafood! Overall, I'd say this place is just okay. We are in Monterey for my granddaughter's graduation from Monte Vista and staying at the Plaza next to the Chart House. Our reservations for dinner were for 5pm, Wednesday. From the moment we walked in, Eylia greeted us with a smile and took us to a perfect window table. Ashley our server treated us like old friends and her attention to detail was spot on. Cindy my girlfriend had a Cranberry and Grey Goose and I enjoyed the perfect skinny margarita. For dinner I had the sea bass with mashed potatoes and Cindy had the salmon with fully loaded baked potato. Delicious. For a starter we split the beet salad which was delightful. For dessert we split the crème Brule, three different servings, vanilla, strawberry and burnt orange, which once again was perfect. The manager, Kerrie Sheesley came by to check on us and we enjoyed a great conversation. Kerrie was very nice an I can see why her restaurant is a five-star restaurant. Me and wife came here for New Year's Eve. They had a price fixed menu. It was a 3 course meal with first being soup or salad the 2nd the protein and 3rd desert. We got there a little early so got a drink at the bar. Wife got a wine and I got an old fashioned. The old fashioned was ok but most disappointing was the cherry. I know it may seem small but when at a place like this a ice cream Sunday cherry instead of a quality one is disappointing. We were seated timely. And explained the menu for the night. Wife got wedge salad to start and I got the lobster bisque. Both were great. For main dish we both got the filet mignon and shrimp. The steak was cooked med rare to perfection. Actually cut it with a butter knife since they initially forgot to bring steak knifes. The shrimp was amazing. It was grilled with some kind of sweet sauce. Some of the best I've had. A great way to enjoy a meal in Cannery Row, sitting at a table overlooking the ocean while enjoying some delicious cocktails and scrumptious seafood. The staff were friendly and the service was pretty fast, especially considering how busy they were. The salmon was divine- buttery melt in your mouth with a delicious balsamic mango glaze. My family and I were in Monterey riding our bikes celebrating my sister's birthday. We wrapped up our ride around 3:45 pm, and wanted to pop into Chart House to see if we could have an early dinner. Chart House didn't open until 4 pm, so we hung out until they opened. As soon as they opened, we checked to see if they had any availability since we didn't have a reservation. They were able to seat us right away. We were right next to a window, but close enough for beautiful ocean views. We ordered a few appetizers and drinks. For my entree, I ordered the prime rib- medium rare, which was the chef's recommendation. My prime rib came with a side of mashed potatoes. They said I could upgrade to a baked potato if I wanted, but I thought that'd be too much food. For dessert we ordered the chocolate lava cake. It takes 30 minutes to make, so I suggest getting that order in sooner than later. I wish our server had asked us about dessert sooner, so we could've timed dessert coming out after we finished dinner, rather than having to sit around and wait for it to arrive. Our table was on the window side, and while we were dining, we saw otters swimming in the bay--we even saw a mama and baby together. They were that close! I ordered wine by the glass, which I considered reasonably priced. Hubby ordered a beer, which was priced like any bar. Fair deal. I ordered the filet mignon for dinner and it was a CA filet (which means don't expect beef in CA to taste like Midwestern stuff). It was very well seasoned and prepared as ordered. The potatoes were nice and we split a creamed spinach. Delish! Daughter ordered prime rib, which she inhaled! She's not a huge red meat eater, so I think that means it was good tasting and tender. We had a party of 13 this time, cute custom menu for the birthday girl, sweet staff as always but what in the world is going on in the kitchen!? It took 90 minutes to get our cold entrees! The mash potato's were literally like one serving spoon scoop. One ordered a medium well prime rib (I know, unusual) and it was dry and hard) they quickly replaced it with a medium rare. The other prime ribs ordered were more like steak tartar and believe me, we order prime rib often and know it's typically pink but usually has brown edges or searing. These did not. It was so odd. We arrived about 10-15 minutes early, walked in and there was no one at the front desk, another gentleman was waiting in the waiting area so we took a seat and waited. Never once were acknowledged. We discovered they didnt actually open until 4:30 that is fine, but if you are allowing people to come in and wait at least acknowledge them. While we were waiting 2 more groups of people walked in and were standing waiting. 4:35pm and someone finally comes to the front desk and begins helping the groups that walked in after us. When we point the the gentleman next to us and sad they were here first and that we have a 4:30 reservation we got a rude OH.. they helped the other gentleman who happened to be a club member and had priority seating. They called us up, we asked if Happy Hour was only in the bar, which they replied yes and said we don't take reservations for the bar (well then maybe your should update the reservation system that asks if you want bar seating). So our reservation was cancelled and we were told to just go to the bar ... now by this time almost all the seating was taken are more had come in while we waited. The bar area is very small, so if you are wanting to come from happy hour you may or may not be able to par take in it. We tried .... *mango mojito - this was very refreshing. *pomogranted mojito - not very good, setzer water (think it was) over powered all the other flavors. * Fried Artichokes - lightly breaded, not a lot of seasoning, but tasty. * Firecracker Shimp - Tasty with just the right amount of heat to balance out the sweetness. * Kim Chee Calamari - good, not what I was expecting with kim chee - there was nothing kim chee about it. First, the good. The wait was short. The service was super friendly. The views were fantastic. Probably the best views on Cannery Row. We ordered what was apparently the most popular app. The "kimchi calamari". My wife was, at first, puzzled at the lack of dipping sauce, but soon realized that the kimchi sauce drizzle was all that was needed. And the mix of the tempura veggies within took it over the top. All of our food came in properly cooked and way larger servings than we could have ever imagined. Nobody left hungry. I would say that the only complaint was the music. It was extremely hyper. If I could give negative stars, I would. This wasn't a meal -- it was a cry for help in takeout form. First, my poor DoorDash driver had to sit there for 40 minutes like they were waiting for concert tickets, only to bring me what I can only assume was a culinary prank. The salad arrived naked -- no dressing, no flavor, just sad, lonely leaves. The fried shrimp appetizer? More like cremated shrimp. I've seen charcoal briquettes with more tenderness. And the tuna... where do I begin? It came slathered in a mystery seasoning that tasted like regret and floor sweepings, paired with sides that must've come from a completely different order, or dimension. We came to Chart House for dinner on New Year's Eve and we liked it so much we came back on New Year's Day. Service was incredible. Our server on New Year's Day was Damian and he was fantastic. Super helpful, kind and always checking in on us. Food was amazing. Salad bar is back so if you're a fan of it, it can be your entree. Baked potatoes are available but you need to ask for them (they're not on the menu). Lobster bisque was flavorful and rich. King crab legs were out of this world. Mud pie and mango sorbet were delicious. Highly recommend them. Mango sorbet for tangy sweetness and mud pie for a delicious rich chocolatey treat. I tried uploading the video of Damian making my smoked applewood manhattan but something was glitching with yelp. It was a cool show to watch him make it and the drink was really tasty. Chart House exceeded my expectations in all categories - service, ambiance, food, and overall vibes! I can't remember our server's name but he was friendly, patient with our many questions, and very attentive. All of the other servers were all incredibly kind - I'd come back for them alone, honestly The view in the restaurant is unmatched - gorgeous ocean views and you can occasionally see seals popping up with the waves. If you can come during sunset I'm sure the view would be divine The food was great! Everything tasted amazing and was cooked to the right level of doneness. I felt that portion sizes were fair/generous, especially the clam chowder which had the most clams I've ever had in a soup, hands down. I highly recommend the calamari - for $19, the large portion is more than enough for a family of four and well worth it. If I had any critiques, I'd say that the menu is not very intuitive/easy to read - particularly the middle column which are course meals - the headers for appetizers, entrees, salads, etc should be bigger and in bold font, and the prices next to the calories per portion should be bolded to differentiate further. This place has gone down hill. Were locals and athe Chart House has always been our go to place for special occasions. My husband & I don't get to go out just the 2 of us, that much these days so we were really looking forward to a good meal! The food we were served was subpar and bland. We had dinner here on Valentine's Day. It was packed, which was to be expected. Our waitress was pleasant but things went down hill when she went on her break while we were still waiting for our entrees. An hour after we ordered, we had been served & finished our appetizer & salads. The waitresses covering for our waitress on her break came up to our table and started to say "I'm supposed to tell you....OH! I'm at the wrong table" and then went to the next table and told the couple sitting there that they had run out of something. Long story short, the waitress left and then came back and told them it would be 10 minutes before whatever they ran out of would be ready. That couple had arrived after we had received our appetizer. I decided to have a cocktail, a mango mojito. It had a nice flavor but it was extremely weak and if I'm being honest, if there was alcohol in it, it wasn't much. I'm a lightweight and yeah....I'm not sure there was any alcohol in my $12 mojito. So we finally get our entrees. I ordered the filet with blue cheese butter and mashed potatoes or so I thought. My husband got the NY Strip steak with mashed potatoes, or so he thought. The food runner put our plates down and rushed off, forgetting to bring steak knives. And instead of mashed potatoes, we were both given rice! Now I do like rice but this rice, I just didn't care for. Not a fan of whatever they mixed in it and it didn't pair well with steak, it seemed more appropriate, taste wise, for seafood. I was disappointed, to say the least. We flagged down our fill-in waitress and asked for steak knives. When she returned with steak knives, she asked how everything was so I told her that I thought my meal had come with mashed potatoes and she said "OH! I was supposed to tell you we were out but I will bring some right now, they are fresh". The mashed potatoes were definitely fresh but they were unseasoned. No salt, no pepper, didn't even taste garlic. I understand that the restaurant was busy and this other waitress was filling in for our waitress but someone should have told us the mashed potatoes were delayed and offered us another side instead of making that decision for us, especially considering this is a $250+ meal. We waited over an hour for our entrees, I'm not complaining about the wait at all, we expected it and the appetizer and salad held us over, but to let us sit for over an hour and not ask us if we would like another side or if we wanted to wait for the mashed potatoes? That's not good customer service. I realize this is a petty complaint but the disappointment was real. I order the same thing every time we come here and I really did not like the rice. Overall food was subpar. It was chain restaurant quality. The Cesar salad was bland, needed pepper. I was never offered fresh cracked pepper nor were there shakers on the table. My husbands steak was unseasoned. My Filet was medium-well on the edges and borderline raw in the middle, definitely not medium. And the mashed potatoes were also unseasoned, no salt, no pepper and not even a hint of garlic! I get that it was one of the busiest nights of the year but I expected more. The experience at Chart House was underwhelming to say the least. Even with reservation, it took 20 minutes to be seated (for a table of 2). Additionally, we did not receive (or offered) waters and bread which we saw other tables had. I will say the waiters recommendation for the sea bass with lobster risotto was incredible. However, the prime rib was not a great cut of meat as it was mostly fat. That was disappointing. I wouldn't recommend the lava cake (unless you prefer a firmer texture). I ordered the calamari, which was amazing, very flavorful and the perfect amount of crunch. I also ordered the clam chowder, which was flavorful but a little watery for my liking. For my entree I ordered the filet & grilled shrimp. The steak was lacking flavor in my opinion and could use more seasoning, a sauce or a marinade. The shrimp were on the smaller side, and the mashed potato's were decent. Overall I would come back, but probably only for happy hour/bar bites. Not for dinner. Food dramatically under and overcooked. 50$ Salmon cooked to the point where albumin was escaping and hard to fork through. It also still had most of the brown meat despite no skin on it. 40$ Steak not cooked twice in a row and the table behind us sent theirs back too. The table beside us also had one person missing a plate and waiting (I assume another re fire) The one pictured was the more cooked of the two. First off the ambiance is beautiful. It's clean, not noisy, the lighting is perfect with a great view. Second, the hostess was very pleasant and our waiter Jairo was fantastic! He was prompt, had a great sense of humor, personable and just all around great! The prime rib was a portion you would expect and cooked perfectly which does not happen at other restaurants often. The coconut shrimp were super tasty, the mac and cheese was homemade not just Kraft and the clam chowder was good too! We spent 5 days in Pacific Grove for the winter, and each wound up getting a cold by day two. Five days is too much for this area - we could have seen everything there is to see in half a day, but I digress. On our final night in town, I wanted me a tasty meal at a classy joint, and after reading a few reviews, we wound up here on a Thursday evening around 6:30. Of course, we didn't bother making reservations, and there was an hour's wait, but the hostess said we could order dinner at the bar, so we did. The bartender, Marcus, promptly took our drank orders, and my wife discovered her new favorite drink, a pomegranate martini. We were impressed with the extensive wine list and the wide variety of spirits on hand. I ordered the prime rib and my wife selected the blackened salmon. Both were fairly standard. Unremarkable but not bad. The prime rib was more grissly than I would have liked. Honestly I think I could make better at home. All in all, The Chart House is a classy restaurant with good service, a nice view, and white tablecloths. It's probably enough to impress your wife if she's into that sort of thing after a long day of wandering around the aquarium, but you could just go home and fire up the Traeger. read more

Update 5/13/22 The Chart House in Monterey is our go to dining restaurant when we visit Monterey. We also visit other restaurants around Cannery Roll which are also great. But we always visit the Chart House. We only visited the Chart house once since the pandemic when it was opened and had very limited seating. We decided to revisit again since restrictions have loosened. The infamous salad bar is still closed, but I was told that it may come back in the near future. We were seated by the window with a great view of Monterey Bay. The service was excellent. Our server was training another server teaching the nuances of the do's and don't when serving customers. Clam chowder - 4/5 A very good flavorful soup. It wasn't too liquidity, but not as thick and rich as the premium clam chowder that I've had in the past. Nevertheless, the clam chowder was very good with just enough richness, clams and spices. A little more clams in the soup would be appreciated. That said, I still recommend ordering the clam chowder. Prime Rib - 5/5 The cut was ample and was very tender. The wellness was served as ordered (medium rare). The au jus was perfect with the right amount of saltiness and enhanced the prime rib with every bite. Again, highly recommended. Salmon with miso glaze - 5/5 We were told that the miso glaze was a special at this time. The salmon was cooked perfectly. It was not overcooked or dry. The salmon was flaky and tender. Another highly recommended dish to order if available. Hot chocolate ok lava cake - 5/5 The perfect dessert to finish up your great dinner. The lava cake was topped with just enough warm chocolate sauce drizzled over and blended well with the vanilla ice cream and soft moist chocolate lava cake. If you're a chocolate lover, order this dessert! We enjoyed our experience and highly recommend giving Chart House a visit when in Monterey. read more

Beautiful restaurant and awesome location. Waited much longer than 15 minutes to be seated which is what they said. We probably waited about 45 - 50. My drinks were okay, food was okay. Steak is better than a Black Angus but not exactly a Mastro's steak either. My oysters were definitely the best part. Really fresh, and tasted clean. We decided to go to the Chart House for my husband's birthday. I ordered the prime rib and he ordered the NY. Both steaks were undercooked and didn't even taste ok. This is the 3rd time we've visited this restaurant and are continuously underwhelmed. It also took a long time for someone to even acknowledge we were there. This place only deserved 2 stars because of the location and the waitress was very nice. The food is not worth the money. read more
