Seriously incompetent staff. Refused to add a spouse to my account even after presenting legal documentation of marriage from State of CA, a social security card and multiple pieces of information verifying our address including credit cards sent from Chase! Insisted on us providing a utility bill which would be impossible given my spouse just moved here from another country but is here legally via marriage based green card. Didn't even consider making a phone call to advocate for us. Totally patronizing and condescending manager. We went across the street to another bank and opened a new account without issue. Bad customer service! I went to the branch with my kids to open minor accounts. They turned us away and said we can open the accounts online. I showed them the cash and checks my kids brought to deposit, and they said open the accounts online and come back to deposit the cash. The branch was empty so it's not like there were other customers to service. I was told to drop in to the Montclair branch to sign something and that it would take 5 minutes but they turned me away and said I had to make an appointment. seems like they didn't want to put the customers first. 3 people behind the counter but no one to help me. it was around 4:20 and they said they couldn't because they were about to close - at 5! and the bank was empty except for one person that 2 people were helping and then the 4th person was nowhere to be seen but couldn't help me either. This branch location has decided to never pick their phone up. I've called 5x for two different reasons while staying in the Bay Area. My branch manager at my home location has called multiple times on my behalf as a private client and nobody called her back either. I finally went into the location and their worker basically told me yeah, we don't pick up the phone and of course they couldn't do what I needed. All in I wasted a significant amount of my time going in there, calling 5x, and talking to my bank, all because they can't be bothered to pick up the phone or call back. I am evaluating other banks as private client is not worth anything. read more

I wanted to thank Elizabeth for her excellent and compassionate help today. I needed to close my deceased sister's credit card and came into the branch to bring her death certificate. Elizabeth was kind enough to take care of the first steps of the process instead of saying to call the number on the statement and not try to assist me. She cared enough to scan the certificate and form so that by the time I got home and called the number, they had received Elizabeth's scans and I could close the account. Note: I filled this out for the survey Chase sent me after my visit to the Montclair, Oakland branch. I love this branch. See below: I had to redeem a couple of savings bonds from 1993 and the staff at the Chase branch in Castro Valley told me they couldn't cash them, because they were $200 and I'd have to go to the Federal Reserve and redeem online. She made it sound easy. Well, I researched that and it was going to be a nightmare, you have mail them in, hope that they get there and don't get stolen, over a certain amount you have to get a notary etc. . So, I called the Montclair branch and they actually answered the phone and told me they would cash them, to bring them in, and even told me to allow 20-30 minutes. Every time I come here, everyone is excellent. I loved the teller, she is always so nice and friendly and positive. I'm excited when I get her, lol. Also, I love the branch manager because she is always so knowledgeable and educates me on the newest banking information. She was the only one ever to tell me not to put my account number on checks I was depositing. She said it had changed over ten years ago and told me how you could be scammed out of your money if you send a check to an untrustworthy person. The manager and the teller both make coming to the bank so enjoyable. We always have interesting conversations and they really go out of their way to provide excellent customer service. This is the only bank that I consistently feel that way about. Even after I had to leave work early and it took me 10 minutes to park, I would prefer to go to this bank than any other. They are confident and very professional. It's always a pleasure to visit this branch because of the highly competent women who work there. Very helpful! My daughter was going to study abroad and needed a specific document that the Chase bank in her college town couldn't figure out. The Montclair branch helped us that day, as well as helped her figure out the best possible ways to bank, use her credit/debit card, etc. while studying overseas. She was a wealth of knowledge. I just ordered currency for a different trip, and they had it in two days. I'm not sure why others say they've had issues. I do think people only post when they have a lousy day, so take them with a grain of salt. read more

The staff is mostly OK at this location, in the 2 years I've been banking here. However, it's really hard to get a hold of both individual staff and the branch itself. One time the only way I could get a call through was via a national customer service person. Shouldn't it be the other way around? It seems it should be relatively easy to get through to your local branch, but not this one. Oh BTW, the email attempts are on par with phone attempts: no response. 0 stars for communication, 3 stars overall for staff at best. read more

I can't believe Chase Bank in Montclair (next to Oakland, CA). I have a mortgage and a Visa Card with Chase Bank and I asked the teller if I could cash a $20.00 check (from Fantasy Football). The window teller calls her supervisor over, the supervisor shakes my hand and says if you open up an account you can cash the check. I was really...isn't a mortgage an account I said. She says no. I said that is a "Poor Policy". I bit my tongue before I said what I really wanted to say. This is the reason why I have my checking account at Wells Fargo and a credit union. You have to know who stands behind you when you are banking. read more

I came here from Bank of America in Emeryville, totally different experience. I love that the tellers are not bunkered down behind bullet-proof glass. I also love that when I ask a question here I am not met by the dull stare of a diary cow, followed by "uuhhmm...let me check on that", followed by 15 minutes of me waiting to get an answer to a routine question. None of that happens here. Their free checking with free checks rocks, as do the rest of their free services. This is clearly just a better banking experience. AMAZING. I came in today and met a true professional: Andre P. He helped me opened a new checking, savings and a new credit card. He then helped me with my online banking, direct deposit and helped to set up my iPhone bank app. All done in less than the amount of time it took for Bank of the West (from across the way) to print my cashier's check. What's truly amazing is that I have a temporary ATM card immediately! The permanent one will be arriving in 2 days!!! I can not believe the amount of patience and care Andre has provided to me as a new customer. After having to deal with the horrid Mary with Bank of the West from across the street. OMG!!!! I just tried to make an appt with a banker after trying all morning at the Lakeshore branch and running into complete ineptitude ( and writing a review here) so I thought I'd try at this Montclair branch. An excersize in futility. It took over a dozen calls over the course of 3 hours to even get an answer at this branch rather than a message saying "no one can answer and call back". Next, I spoke to a teller who didn't give her name but sounded like she was 12. Explained the reason for an appt and was put on a long hold. She comes back and wants information that is irrelavant to making an an appt. My email. Why? No thank you. My phone number. Ok...but you have it on the caller ID. I'm then informed I can make the appt online. But why? I'm on the phone with you now. She " doesn't have the book". So why did you need all that info from me? What? I start to sound frustrated because I am and she's so professional she hangs up on me! I call back and someone who sounds exactly like the teller answers but tells me she is "a banker". Ok good. Can I make an appt? Again with the email adress and phone number. Why must I give out information to make an appt? Then "Tina" decides to hang up on me too. This is a bank, folks not some game. I am a long time customer. This how they are trained here? So I call back again. Same voice and accent...but this time she tells me she is "Hannah" the bank manager. I tell her I'm trying to make an appt. I also tried to explain the issues I was having with her subordinates trying to make an appt. She is rude and not at all helpful or interested. I decide this is not the branch I want to deal with. So for the last hour and a half, I've been trying to reach a customer service supervisor on their 800 number to file a complaint against this branch and their lack of professionalism. Apparently, I need to speak to a supervisor to do this. And this is how they wear you down....I only get reps in the Phippines whom I can't hear from terrible connections. Ive called back several times and am currently on hold once more after being transferred to a message in Spanish. Apparently, the customer service people are no brighter or capable then the losers working in the branches. So my very simple request of setting up an appt to switch my account from joint to just myself as the other joint holder has passed away, will be resulting in my closing the account altogether and never dealing with Chase again. This branch is located in the middle of Montclair's Village row of shops and eateries, so it's a convenient stop before/after one of my semi-frequent trips to the neighborhood Starbucks or Tutti Frutti. The people working there have been courteous and efficient in all my exchanges with them. There's no dedicated/free parking lot so parking can be difficult to find during the weekend. Don't forget to feed the meter - we usually see a meter maid lurking nearby. read more

This review is based on several years of doing banking at the Montclair branch. This is my local branch - I've been coming here for quite some time to do my banking. The tellers are always friendly (but they are way too tolerant of people talking on cell phones while doing banking business!). I've seen a fair amount of turnover here over the years, but most of the staff stay on quite a while. Having staff recognize me as a regular client and them taking the small effort to be cordial - in what I imagine can be a very stressful business - is very much appreciated. When I've needed to open new accounts or inquire about loans or other "products" I've always been treated as a valued customer and have always had my questions answered. Every once in a while, the customer to staff member ratio is a little out of whack, causing occasional delays in concluding business, but this has been pretty rare. I was there today (a Friday before a holiday Monday) around 4:30pm and there were about 4-5 people ahead of me in line....BUT...with 4 tellers helping out, it was just a few minutes before I was helped. If there is a downside to this branch, it is that they don't have safe deposit boxes - I have to go to the Lakeshore branch to stash my stuff. This branch is within one block to at least 3 coffee shops, 2 candy shops, a couple bookstores, several restaurants, grocery and drug stores as well as many more offernings- great place to do your banking as well as meet all your other needs! read more

I've been coming here for my banking business since I started working in the area in around late 2007 (when they were still WaMu). I would have to go in a couple of times of month to deposit my paycheck, and they would always remember me and were very courteous. Last year I went away to college, and when I came back to work for the summer and had to submit my paper work, they seemed to remember me and were very helpful in setting up my the direct deposit. Whether I go in for personal, work related, or even on the job reasons, they are always great and efficient. I've heard that the tellers aren't the nicest to others (my boss) but if you're nice and respectful to them (probably even if your not), they'll give you great service in return. read more

If you use a Teller at this Chase Branch in Montclair to get cash out of your accounts BE VERY CAREFUL THAT YOU ARE NOT CHEATED. My husband and I have been customers of this Chase branch for many years and have Checking, Savings and Credit Card accounts. We took cash out recently using a Teller inside the bank and when we got home we discovered that we were shorted $60. Since then, we always have the Teller count the money in front of us (never relying on the Teller or their counting machine again.) Today, I went to this branch again and took out a substantial amount of cash. I specified most of the cash in $20's with the rest in tens and fives. First, the Teller counted out 10 bills which I pointed out could not be correct. It turned out she was giving me all hundreds, which is not what I asked for. She then put the money through the counting machine saying all of it was there. When I asked her to count the money in front of me, I discovered that she had inserted multiple $1 bills in among the $20's. I asked for another Teller to finish my transaction because I thought this Teller was trying to cheat me again. The other Teller said she was the supervisor that day because the manager was not in. When I complained to her about the first Teller, her response to me was very negative. She told me that SHE trusted the Teller and that I was negatively affecting the teller's reputation. I told her that I was going to make a formal complaint about the other Teller trying to slip $1 bills into a stack of $20s. At that point I was accused of being too aggressive and was asked to leave. NOTE: Aggressive? Yes, I complained about the Teller trying to cheat me and said I was going to make a formal complaint. However, I did NOT behave in an aggressive manner. Specifically, I did not yell, curse, physically threaten, or in any other way try to intimidate the first Teller. She stayed in her seat on the other side of the plastic shield from me the entire time, even after the second teller/supervisor took over helping me. If she felt so intimidated why didn't she move away? During this entire time, there was a man standing nearby a few feet to the side. He was not using the cash machine or waiting in line. He and the first Teller smirked at each other throughout the time I was there so I assumed he was a friend of hers. He was invading my banking privacy, listening to and watching my entire cash withdrawal and neither Teller asked him to move away. When I finally left, the first Teller yelled at me in front of everyone in the bank saying "don't come back." Since this has happened to me twice, I believe there are Tellers at this branch who are regularly cheating people out of cash. Once people leave they have no proof of how much money they did or didn't receive. Since I was told "don't come back." My husband and I will now have to travel much further to go to a different Chase branch, or change our checking/savings/credit card accounts to another Bank in Montclair. read more

I go to this branch (Montclair Oakland) all the time. There was a guy there who was great. I wish I could remember his name cuz now he is gone. Probably fired for being too nice. Last time I was in that bank it happened to be a manager who was behind the counter. And she was not a very nice person at all. In fact when I was all done getting two cashiers checks which she charged me for when in fact I later found out they should have been free. Well anyway I was asking her where that nice guy went and she said to me "there are no men who work here" and there was a guy standing right next to her! She insulted her employee in the most messed up way! Ok there's more. I asked her for my receipt .. You know the little piece of paper that shows you the transactions you've just made .. Well she FLAT OUT REFUSED TO GIVE ME ANY KIND OF RECEIPT FOR MY TRANSACTIONS. So then I asked her for two envelopes. Not much to ask for since I just bought two cashiers checks and they normally gave me an envelope for each cashiers check. So she gives me one envelope. So I VERY POLITELY ask her for another one. And she curtly and rudely tells me that she already gave me two. But she had not. So I said very nicely "there is only one here" SO SHE PRACTICALLY THROWS THE SECOND ENVELOPE AT ME! I am just disgusted at this woman's behavior. Sibce she is the manager I guess there's not much anyone can do. But fellow citizens BEWARE OF THIS BITCH. I didn't catch her name but she had medium length dark wavy curly hair. It was the first time I ever saw her there and I hope it's the last. And I still can't believe she said there are no men working there .. While a male teller was standing right next to her. What a total bitch. read more

I am a current customer of Chase. I have some forms from the Treasury that need an official stamp. I called ahead to make an appointment. Oleg answered. He was extremely rude on the phone. Told me to make an appointment and did not take any of my information. Nevertheless I came in for other business and spoke with a very friendly intelligent teller. She made the appointment for me at 5:00 on Tuesday to get the forms signed. She recognized them and said it would be no problem. Unfortunately the appointment was with Oleg. Although the young lady pointed out what needed to be done Oleg seemed incapable of stamping my paperwork. To be clear, the teller instructed Oleg how to stamp my paperwork and he still could not do the job. In addition to rude, I would also call him incompetent, unfriendly and unhelpful. All in all, seems like a nice place but Chase needs to do better than Oleg if they are serious about taking care of their clients. Fancy web pages, slick graphics and creative promotions are worthless when a company has someone like Oleg in front of their customers. Follow up: On Saturday 12-1-18 I took the exact same paperwork to the Union Landing branch office of Chase. I asked the very friendly, helpful teller if she could help me. Wasted a lot of time and worry due to their incompetence. I opened a new account, but they got my phone number wrong, and then when they "couldn't reach me" (but never sent me an email) two weeks later they closed my account. They are taking weeks to return my money. I had to go through "fraud control" and be treated like a criminal. No apologies were received for wasting my time, dropping my phone calls, closing my account, tying up my funds, or getting the runaround between the central office and the branch office. read more

A little hard to find parking on a busy day, but I was able to finally drive twice around the block and found parking nearby. I walked there easily and was greeted right away by a teller. I will definitely be going to this location from now on. I have been a member of Chase bank for year, and I usually visit the bank just around the corner from my house. It is a fine bank with a good location. But after my visit today to the Montclair Village Chase bank, I will be frequenting that location. Not only is there complimentary coffee and lollipops, but the employees played with my toddler and kept him occupied for a short time so that I was able to quickly do my banking. As a mom, that is the kind of service I needed at that moment. A friendly banker was helping people in line so that the wait was not as long and the tellers were speedy and professional. read more
