My first time with this outstanding credit union in Southshore. I have been a steady banker for BOA, Chase and Wells Fargo but this location and their treatment to new members is outstanding. I opened a new account with Diana, who was right on time with my scheduled appointment, she helped me to fill out the paperwork, explain all of the CU criteria for enrolling as new member, funded the account at the teller window and lastly program my new account for an online account with username and password in the office area. I felt very comfortable in executing all the required paperwork and was able to now go online at home to start moving funds from the banks to Provident. The only gesture Diana told me is to wait more than 30-days for my account to become active with its required services. The services are compatible with the other Southshore banks, and the parking is the entire Southshore parking lot. I left the CU feeling accomplished with no additional fees that banks often stick onto my personal and business checking accounts. Kudos Provident CU read more

During my last visit, she asked if I had a straight deposit, and I said yes--even though I had been planning to open a CD account. I noticed the branch was busy, so I figured I'd come back another time. But when Eloisa saw the size of my deposit, she immediately took the initiative to make sure I'd start earning high interest right away. She closed her teller window on the spot and personally took me to her office to help open a CD account--going out of her way to prioritize my financial needs. That's just how Eloisa operates. She consistently goes above and beyond to provide thoughtful, customer-focused service. Provident Credit Union sends out misleading mailings offering to lower car payments based on being able to offer a lower interest rate, knowing your current payment and providing a lower estimated payment based on interest rate reductions. Who wouldn't want to save $200 or more a month by refinancing? My vehicle, purchased new a year and a half ago with 21,000 miles on it currently, with the better trim options, would seem a great candidate, as would I, with my credit, income, and payment history. What they in fact are offering is to refinance the Kelley Blue Book value, which everyone knows plunges the moment you drive off the lot. Why bother saving $200 a month in interest if you have to come up with $15k instantly for the difference in value? Why did I waste ten minutes filling out the application, and another five minutes talking with the loan officer who revealed the basis for their actual offering? Credit Unions generally have higher ethical standards than commercial banks -- but this misleading mailing, which involves an invasion of privacy (as they are in fact using precise information about your actual debt to another creditor), proves that Provident is the exception to that rule. I will continue to pay Kia Finance, and Provident has in fact deprived itself of hundreds of dollars of income monthly. Terrible -- if this is emblematic of their business model, I would encourage everyone to stay away from Provident Credit Union. read more

Date: 9/7/2021 Time: 3:50 PM 77° Sunny, clear I have used this credit union's ATM several times in the past to withdraw cash with no problem. Today my experience was different. At first I couldn't figure out why the female customer in front of me was taking about five minutes or more to do her transaction. I can't say for sure if she was able to accomplish her task. I needed to withdraw cash from the ATM. The instructions on the screen kept asking me my preferences. Okay, I try to reply by touching my response on the screen. I was not able to accomplish my task and after five minutes I had to "chuck it" and cancel the transaction. It was not worth the time to perform a transaction. I did not speak to a credit union representative about the issue. However, I did mention to the security guard at the front entrance that not only it was an inconvenience but also the instructions were confusing. Bottom line and tip: Do not use their ATM machine to withdraw cash from either the checking or savings account. Enough said!/ read more

I was looking to refinance a mortgage on a property and was working with a personal referral on the process. After three weeks, I felt the process was going nowhere and decided to look elsewhere. I had received a refinancing flyer from Eloisa Alarcon, Branch Manager of South Shore Provident during this time and decided to submit an application. After submitting the application, Eloisa Alarcon contacted me to confirm the application and provided the website for me to finalize the application and confirm Robert Yoklavich as the Mortgage Consultant. During the documentation process, I worked with Robert and Lorena Zamora, Loan Processor, to have all the required documents uploaded to the portal. After three months, the loan was official closed with the signing of the documents with the mobile escrow service. Subsequently, I came into the Branch to make a deposit and Diana assisted me in reestablishing a Debit/ATM card. Next time, I came in to set up a checking account and was assisted by Brenda. I'm glad I got my refinance loan from Provident. I worked with Eloisa, Robert and Lorena virtually and the process was professional and efficient. My first two visits to the Branch and Diana and Brenda were friendly and efficient. The security guard in front greets you and opens the door for you too. Great experience all around! read more

I am giving 5 starts to Provident Credit Union, Alameda branch, but i would have liked to give 10 stars at least !!! I applied for a car loan and the service i received by Diana Mandalim, Universal Banker, was outstanding at every aspect and beyond. She is extremely knowledgeable, smart and courteous. She gave me advice/ explanations so i could make the best decisions in terms of how much money to ask for the car loan, how long to have the loan for, suggested extended warranty program, helped me with communication with the non-franchise dealer. She had the dealer re-write the contract to be accurate, and communicated with him directly after i asked him to provide required documents to PCU (e.g. contract, copy of the title). I never applied for car loan before, and I was pretty clueless, but thanks to Diana, not only did she made the process simple for me, but i felt she genuinely had my interests at heart! Diana is very caring, and encouraged me to take my time to find the right car, to make sure i test drive the car and that i really like the car before making the decision to buy it. I got my dream car today! and thanks to Diana and Provident, i don't feel overburdened with the car loan! read more

Greedy like every other bank. I received $196 in overdraft fees in 1 day all related to a direct deposit not clearing. They've refused to reverse any of them so I'm closing my account. I have been with Provident for 10 years and they used to be much more community focused and would reverse charges upon occasion. The answer I got from the call center was "T.S." The website sucks, they take too long to clear checks, can't do wire transfers, have low limits on cash withdrawals, rude call center, inconvenient branches. I originally moved to Provident to get away from big bank greed and keep my money with a more community focused bank, now they're just like BofA or Wells Fargo. When CItibank refused to deposit a check for a homeowners policy reimbursement (after being a customer for more than 25 years), Shalina Yates and the staff at Provident in the Alameda Branch worked with me to get the money into my account. I have been going to this branch for at least 5 years and have been professionally helped with loans, deposits, copies of whatever paperwork I need, and what to do to ward off scammers trying to use my credit or debit card. The tellers all great you and handle details such as which account to draw from, what kind of bills I would like when I am getting cash out, and always give me a copy of the transaction. This place offers the most pleasant and friendly banking experience I have ever had. I've been a member since 2016 and recently I found myself needing to purchase a car . I made an appointment and went in to talk to Diana M. about financing a car . She did all the things needed to find out the interest etc . Once I was approved and ready to go to the dealership , she told me to please call her and send her any documentation they give me to sign . Shopping for a car as a single woman is not the easiest . Salesmen are ready to take your money and offer you the moon plus a 13% interest. No thank you . However , thanks to Diana I felt confident to go get me a car . The folks at dealership gave me the run around and we're not too happy about my 0 down deal . I called Diana while at the dealership and she was helpful and assured me we could solve the issue . The dealership claimed they didn't work with provident so I needed to get a check from provident . Diana made it happen and I walked out with a car ! Yes , she was doing her job , and she was astounding at her job . I have to tell you, I really like and appreciate Provident Credit Union! Sure, they do a lot of things that other financial institutions do, but they are just more personal and personable. They really want their customers' to succeed. They bend over backwards to help with loans of all types - and just the simple things like checking and savings accounts. They have a customer in me for life! What really put them over the top for me was that I am relocating to another state and have a vehicle loan with them (one that I originated with Wells Fargo and switched to Provident at about 1/2 the interest rate!). I want/need/must register the vehicle in the new state so the title needs to move as well. I didn't even know that there was such a department but the PCU DMV Dept just went out of their way to make sure I got credit for my insurance, get the CA DMV to swap things over, and guided me in the ins and outs of registering in the new state. They sure did not have to do that, but they went the extra mile! In this day and age - who does that? Folks that just love their customers and love their jobs - that's who! Ainsley is great! She went above and beyond to help me establish my son's banking accounts. The bank has capacity limitations to keep all of their patrons as safe as possible and to stay in compliance with the current Shelter in Place orders. To avoid any unnecessary exposure, she schedule an appointment and provided most of the paperwork virtually. We spent maybe 10 minutes inside of the bank finalizing documents and were all set up. These folks apparently haven't gotten the memo because I've gone in here twice and they've never been willing to help me with anything. First time: Make change from a $100? Such a shame. I have banked with Provident for 35 years, and they used to have great rates and service, but going steadily downhill I stuck with them when they screwed up my escrow payment and my insurance got cancelled. Lots of headaches getting that one fixed. (I refinanced for a much lower rate at a different bank, and they almost screwed that one up for me too.) I try to make transfers, and they don't go through. I went in to a branch to get cash and they wouldn't give it to me. And treated me with disdain. Um- no, I can't have my money??? They suckered me in with the "Super Reward" checking acct- with so many requirements and a TERRIBLE credit card. The card denies my charges randomly, which is a pain in the neck (not to mention the "super" rate is, like, 1%?) and this is the kicker: The card was declined when I bought a pair of shoes over a month ago, so I used a different card and then discovered a few days later that my card WAS in fact charged. Good thing I pay attention right? Wrong. I have spent hours with phone calls, emails, getting a run around and then to be told they are "closing the case" and keeping the charge on there. No replies after I-AGAIN- sent them the evidence of the double charge. Final straw. I guess I'll go back to a corporate bank. I tried to support the little guys. My bad. read more

I transferred my accounts with Chase after discovering that when I withdrew $15,000 from my savings account with them, they discontinued the free checking account and began charging $25 per month. A friend told me about Provident and said they did not charge a monthly fee for a Checking account. I opened up a Checking, Savings and Money Market Fund with them and am extremely happy with my decision. All of the tellers are friendly and helpful. It feels like what banks used to feel like. A "homey" place to do business." You don't have to wait in long lines which is a real plus! Thankfully, they do not have greeters bothering you with their fake smiles when they should be taking care to make the lines shorter by opening up another window to accommodate their customers. I got a flyer in the mail about re-financing my car. I tried calling the customer service number but wasn't able to login so I decided to walk into the Alameda branch. Luckily, I was assisted right away by Sadie. I had a list of questions concerning my options and if the it was a significant difference in savings. She was able to answer my questions (writing down the answers) and attaching it to a form with information about the auto loan and her card. Last month I had a bill that failed to get paid due to NSF. The bill was $300 and on the day they tried to collect there was $1500 in my account. Provident claims no one tried to collect $300 that day or any other day that week. It is a few weeks later when I get word of all this and I no longer have $300 in my account due to a late fee from ATT when they overdrew my account 2 months prior and no one said a word about it (Another story). Shoot I owe 300 to these people and someone mess up. I figure it was the company and I explain to them it is going to be at least a month to get their money due to rent and, hey, the money was there. You messed up. But my name is mud now. 30 days later the same thing happens with another company for a $47 bill. Provident claims no one tried to collect that week. This week they did and you are over drawn pay us $28. I doubt 2 separate companies made the same mistake. I don't know what is going on with them but they were a good credit union 10 years ago. Other reasons to love Provident: They hang onto checks for 10 days-once for 12 due to the weekend, that's a whole pay period people! They claim withdraws and deposits are done in the order they are made but will make people wait 4 days after they try to collect to get paid, meanwhile let other transactions go through. Obsessed with charging $28 NSF fees. Currently I am being charged $28 twice a day for the last 3 days and I have no idea why. I went down to ask who was trying to collect and the banker never told me just chose to argue about another $28 NSF fee that happened on payday because they chose to process that bill before my paycheck. Really? $28 for an hour difference on a $10 overdraft? You have got to be kidding me. Anyway, no clue who is trying to get paid. So far this month I'm well over $100 in NSF fees and there is a another week to go! I'm glad someone is profiting on my current situation. It is like they are kicking the ladder out from under you as you try to get out of the hole you are in. They will turn your debit card off for "fraud" 1-2 times a month. I basically can't shop online without them putting a fraud alert on my card. This is handy when you find this out at the gas station and you need to sit on hold for 30 minutes to get your card working, to get gas, to well to hell with it I'm hella late to work now... I understand that I should be more careful with my money and I take responsibility the times I messed up but how can you take control of your finances under these conditions? If you like doublespeak, and need a bully to kick you when you are down Provident may be the place to go. read more
