I started noticing I had a hard time fully opening my eyes a few years ago. Ptosis - that's what it is called. Like all silent vowel words (asthma, pneumonia, Europe), it sounds trouble. The condition progressively got worse over the last 2 years that I looked almost half asleep in all the pictures. The worst part is that it caused my left eye brow to arch up, yes, like Steven Colbert or Jack Nicholson, except that it was unintentional (sorry ma'am, I wasn't questioning the change you gave me back!). Last December when my mom asked me what happened to my eyes, I know it was time for me to do something about it. The problem is that it is a high-precision, difficult surgery with sometimes unpredictable outcome. We are talking about cutting 1-2 mm of the tendon that pulls up the upper lid, sew them up and see how they heal in 4 weeks. If this is not a gamble I sure don't know what it is. Last time I made a gamble like that was when I got married. I spoke with a couple ophthalmologists and oculoplastic surgeons in San Francisco, but could not pull the trigger with enough confidence in any of them. I remembered meeting Hillary Clinton in a fundraising in Palo Alto in December. Although she has my vote, her plastic surgeon didn't. She looked wide-eyed in person. It may be a strategic asset that helps her with the 11-hour long Benghazi grill (falling asleep with eyes open?) or facing Donald Trump (*glare with eye closed*?), but jeez I didn't want my eyes to look like that. I was impressed with Dr. Lay's work on Realself and spoke with him about the surgery. He was very patient to explain to me about the risk, the surgery, the healing process, and what to expect. I had already seen all of his stellar-looking patients on his website and Instagram, but the best part was that when he told me there is an about 5% revision rate, he whipped out his iPhone to show me an example of unsuccessful case that probably would need revision. Certainly not someone who wants to sell you something, and I especially appreciated the full disclosure of both the best as well as worst case scenario, which helped me make an informed decision and manage my expectation. It also says a lot about a doctor who can remain objective about his work and is capable of self-critique, looking at things through patients' eyes. It is especially important because not all surgeries end up like a fairy tale. Truth be told is that we probably won't need the doctors to tell us when the result is amazing, but we do need them to acknowledge and help fix if it is not successful (we did talk about the backup plan "what-if" the outcome is not good). Well, the rest of it is history. Not only did he fix my droopy eyelids, he made my eyes look brighter, sexier and more well-defined (I'm a tomboy/woman-dude who no one has ever accused of being sexy, or using the wrong bathroom). I cannot be happier. Dr. Lay was wonderful and supportive throughout my recovery period. He called and texted to check in on my eyes. My left eye had not healed as well as the right eye, which as a result, looked more swollen and smaller in the beginning. I was a little freaked out. I texted Dr. Lay at 8AM and followed up with a call to his office at 9-ish AM, who told me that he was in a conference but were very helpful to schedule me to see him the next day. By the time I hung up the phone, he already texted me back. Of course it was just my post-op neurosis. Everything turned out great - my eyes look fantastic and Ted Cruz quit the race so I don't have to see his face on Google news anymore. I have not worked with any doctor who is more available to his patients and emotionally invested in the outcomes. He had told me that I would be restaurant-ready 2-week post-op. Not even that long, my eyes were looking great (albeit a little puffy like allergy) by day 11. The hardest part of the healing process I found was the first 3 days (I was so bored doing nothing "staying low") and no contact lenses for 2 weeks. Other than that it was mostly a breeze, and now I love my eyes! :) By the way, if you go see his portfolio on his Instagram, you will also notice that the guy is adored by his patients. This is the affluent Bay Area. They are not rigid to a fault, and as you can see this MD is passionate, and involved with his clientele and prides himself on his practice. #2 I had scheduled and paid my deposit upfront for a consultation that if I chose to go through with the procedure I could apply the deposit. What people don't consider is that sometimes the Dr. Can be amazing, but may not specialize in what you are asking for. He was very up front about that and refunded my deposit. It's one thing if the Dr. Can confidently fulfil your cosmetic needs and you choose not to go through surgery then the deposit compensates the Dr. for his time and consult. Though when the Dr. Feels there is someone else who may suit your needs better it is good etiquette to refund the clients deposit because they no longer have the option of applying it toward a procedure. #3 The receptionist (who may also be office managers or medical assistants) are very professional over the phone and even when situations become tense, they stay calm. It's never a good feeling to be turned down for something cosmetic, even when in your best interest and the message is delivered sweetly. There is still a bitter disappointment. Been going here for two treatments with Nurse Emily. I first came here for Micro Needling. Nurse Emily was super informative, sweet, gentle, and super honest. Dr. Lay did an upper and lower eye lift, a lower face/neck and eyebrow lift on the most important person in my whole life; my mom! My mom is from a small town in the Midwest and we did not have a trusted surgeon or recommendation in the surrounding areas. I had heard of Dr. Lay from a local friend and how great his work is on the eyes. We met with several different surgeons and we felt most comfortable with Dr. Lay because of his work and bedside manner. Dr. Lay has the perfect combination of experience and knowledge without the ego. Having a surgeon with a big ego is not something you want to take on when there are complications. Dr. Lay does not typically do procedures under anesthesia to keep costs down for the patients. It isn't medically necessary to be under for these procedures. It is more of a comfort for the patient. My mom is very mentally strong so she booked the appointment. It was nice because she could eat and drink the same day of surgery. Her pre-op was just some measurements and markings by Dr. Lay and they began. I was supposed to pick her up but they called and said they needed to take a break. She had texted me saying her back hurt from sitting so I assumed she needed to stretch in between procedures. An hour later I got a call telling me to come back to the office because they needed to take her to the surgery center. Well it turned out my special mom was in the 4% of heavy bleeders. She is older (64) so blood doesn't coagulate like in a younger person. Dr. Lay had finished her upper and lower eye lift and they started on her lower face lift, but one of the lower eyes had a bleed/hematoma. So they had to stop and open her back up to let the blood drain out. Dr. Lay got that under control and started to finish up her other side when she started an extra bleed from her lower face life. Now, here is where I applaud Dr. Lay so much! He didn't go with "Ego" like most surgeons would have and just closed her up and sent her home. Instead, he left some of the stitches open, but a bandage around her head and gave us one of his nurses to keep an eye on her while we waited for the surgery center to get us in so she could be put under. Dr. Lay said he needed to make sure the bleeding had stoped and he wanted my mom sleepy so he could explore on a deeper level. He booked us over at L&P associates and she was put in a light sleep. I am so happy to report her bleeding had stopped and he was able to close her up and send her home. The first few days were pretty scary. I think I was expecting the black and blue eyes - but the swelling was more than I expected. If you are considering any of these procedures know the swelling can be pretty bad the first few days. My mom was a model patient and she did all of the icing she was supposed to do on her eyes and the swelling quickly went down; she also took a supplement Arnika forte that we think helped so much. Dr. Lay and his staff were in constant contact with us and we were able to get a hold of someone if we had any questions or concerns. My mom accidentally took an aspirin day 7 after the procedure (not thinking because she said it was really painful around her ears during the recovery and the tight compression she had to wear). She started a small bleed in her cheek - sigh! Dr. Lay was so understanding and he drained it for her over the next few days. Fast Forward a few weeks and she is doing so great back home in the Midwest. She seriously looks amazing and she looks like she took 20 years off her face! When she takes pictures she doesn't look like her eyes are closed anymore. I don't think gravity can be fair. You look one way your whole life and then that gravity pulls your skin down and you really don't look like yourself. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look like yourself or a better version of yourself if something bothers you. If you are considering booking a procedure I would definitely recommend doing it for yourself and going with Dr. Lay! Just the fact it takes 2-3 months to get a consult should tell you how much he is in demand! Also his entire team, staff and L&P associates are amazing. i been keeping Dr. Lay as my secret for the last couple years. Growing up i always wanted to have big eyes cause thats all i see on the magazines. Before choosing Dr. Lay i actually read a 500 page forum on asian eyelid surgery. Silly me wanted to go all the way to Socal to get it done. Then i googled up "Asian eyelid Surgery bay area". I came across a website called real self and thats where i found chase lay. I prob spent a couple days on there reading all the reviews and dr lay had lots go review on only on his page but also on the forums posted by other users. I went to his webpage and read all his credentials and felt very confident so i set up an appointment. i actually booked an appointment that day to come in the following week to get surgery done. During that time he wasn't as booked as he is now cause more people are reading the word about him. HE did an amazing job and its so natural nobody believes me when i tell him i got eyelid surgery. I seriously felt like my confidence level went up by 100% after i got them done and swear that they were the best investments i ever made, Why didn't i get them done sooner? OF course the answer is, i didn't have a well paided job before and couldn't afford it. Its been about two years now and i always wake up everyday thanking the heavens above for Dr. LAY. I'm so grateful to have found Dr. Chase Lay. I suffered an eye injury after being hit across the face with a soccer ball. I developed chalazion after chalazion on the spot I got hit. I rotated between kenalog injections and surgery for this mass on my eyelid that would grow back every 3-4 months. Sometimes the injections and surgery worked, sometimes they didn't. I was looking for a doctor who could inject my eyelid with a kenalog/5-FU mixture since that had worked well in the past. My skin atrophied at the injection site from the last time doctor, so I was hoping to find someone new. After being turned down to receive the injection from local doctors in Sacramento, I looked in the Bay Area and found Dr. Chase. His mixture and delivery was perfect! I haven't needed another injection or surgery for my eyelid injury since my first appt with him, and the incision site healed well. He's very down to earth and lighthearted. Aside from being a very amiable doctor and having fantastic bedside manner, Dr. Chase is also extremely good at what he does. My mom doesn't do well with pain and I had everything ready for her from ice bags to medications to foods that would help with swelling and pain. Went in for what I though was keloid scar behind my ear. Dr. Lay explained to me that it was not a scar and most likely a build up of dead skin or something. The bump has always been there since I got my piercing 3 years ago, but only recently has swelled in size. He offered a different treatment in which he cut it open and removed it from my ear and even showed me what was lodged in there. Anyway he sued it closed and gave me antibiotics for the next few days. Whole procedure was maybe like 5 minutes. Paid 500 dollars for the whole thing for what I initially thought I was gonna be $75 dollars for steroid injections together with the consultation. I understand that a different procedure was done than what I initially came in for, but I kinda wish the price difference was explained to me when I agreed to a different procedure. I'm on that college life so that hit me pretty hard in the wallet area lol. Anyway he is professional and friendly so if I do recommend. Just weary, if your on a budget ask an estimate of the price of what your coming in for, and if another option is explained to you ask for the price because the difference could be large. Update: Changed the review to 5 stars. Had to come back for another procedure on my ear. apparently there was excess skin growth inside my ear as well which explained why my left ear lobe was a little bigger than my right so Dr.Lay removed it in another quick procedure. Maybe 7 minutes. Wasn't charged for this procedure either. Its been a few days and my ear left ear and right ear are now back to looking identical lol which hasn't been the case for a few years. When thinking about finding someone new to go to, I kept on looking at Dr. Lay's website and wondering if I should make an appointment to see nurse Emily. Her pictures of her work were stunning, so I decided to take a leap of faith and book an appointment. I was scared, but hopeful that she would make my lips look beautiful and pouty, without looking overdone. She did the most amazing work and the injections were relatively painless. I have a double eye lid surgery with Dr Chase Lay, MD. I found him on Yelp review. The first time when I visit his office for consultation, he did not seem very friendly. So, in order to break the ice, I praised him a lot to cheer him up. I said the reason I came to see him because he got a lots of good reviews on Yelp from his clients. I have confidence in him. On the day of the surgery, from the moment of the surgery began till the end, he was talking non-stop. I was so worried, because that was not what I expected. Since it is a surgery, if he is talking too much, he might get distracted, and the procedure is irreversible. If he is cutting a little bit too high or a little too low, my eyes will look horrible. At the beginning of the surgery, he told me that his previous client wrote him a yelp review saying that he was singing for the whole procedure. I assumed that there was nothing bad happening; But I did not expect this time he would treat me as a guinea big again, by talking non-stop during the whole operation and even force his client(me) to participate in his conversation during operation. I did not want to talk at all. I did not know how to handle the situation. When he first ask me the first question, I refused to talk. He then tag on my shoulder and assured me that he is a very experienced plastic surgeon talking during the procedure has no problem for him. He forced me to talk. I was praying to the God and hopefully nothing bad would happen. But now when I think back, God may not like us to change our natural look anyway. God won't help. During the operation, I was thinking if I asked him to shut up and be focused on the operation. I don't know what his reaction was. I don't know this guy. If he got bored and just hurried up to finish the operation, I would look extremely terrible. I thought it would be better to let him talk and let him take the time to finish the procedure. Anyway, what he talk about during the whole operation was all non-sense. He was talking about Asian women, his dating experience, he also claim that he would no longer marry again. It has nothing to do with the operation, and I have no interest in this kind of topic. All I thought was this guy is nothing but a player. At the end of the procedure, after he left the surgery room, I told his assistance that he was talking way too much. After that, I went to the restroom to take a look at my eyes, the scar of my double eye-lid on my right eye is double the size than the one on the left eye. I was so upset. He assured me that it would look fine. However, the result is very disappointing. During this period of time, I have sent him multiple emails expressing my anger. I told him that he is so immature and unprofessional. But anyway, everything is too late now. He did a good job on my left eye, but my right eye look so weird. He cut a little bit too high on my right eye near the end. The scar is also a little bit up and down. It look so fake. If he didn't talk so much, and would have been concentrated on the operation, the result would not be that bad. I wait almost 2 and a half year before I wrote a review on him because I want to make sure that my eyes are fully recovered before I gave him a bad review to be fair with him. Anyway, I think Dr. Chase Lay is very immature and unprofessional, and my eyes look very fake and weird. read more

I was referred to Dr. Lay by one of his patients. My visit was initially for a deviated septum. During my exam, he asked if I suffered from sleep apnea. I, in fact, did and snored like a bear. He explained to me that correcting the septum would solve part of my problem but that removing extra large tonsils would improve my results. He shared that recovery from tonsillectomy at my age was harder, but suggested I proceed. He explained the procedures and the recovery process in detail during my visit. His knowledge and attention to detail in his explanation gave me confidence and made me feel well informed. The day of the surgery I expected the worst with respect to recovery. However, within a couple days I was eating normal food and had no pain. And the snoring was gone! Dr. Lay called to check up on me and was very attentive with my post-surgical care. He is a great surgeon with a great bedside manner. read more
