saw this place on yelp and decided to stop by during our trip to morro bay. We walked in at around 3ish with no reservation and did the wine tasting. As of this review it was 5 pours for $20. We liked all of the wines, but port the least. It is also dog friendly and our host was so nice to our dog and even gave him treats. She gave us a good background on each of the wines and provided us a map of the wineries in the area. Location is great too bc you can catch a great view of the sunset! will come again! read more

Wine tasting in the time of COVID is a unique challenge! I was staying in Cambria but struggling to find places either open at all, or open early in the week for tasting. Yelp helped me find Chateau Margene a short drive away in Morro Bay, and I'm so glad it did! Street parking was no problem on a Monday afternoon, and I was greeted by Max as I walked in and given my choice of outside table for tasting. Max was awesome to taste and chat with (we have the same hometown, what a cool coincidence!), and he very graciously took me through their 5 offerings with helpful and unpretentious explanations. It was so pleasant to sit in the evening air, taste lovely wine without feeling any rush or pressure, and be able to talk as fellow humans without it being all business. Their wines are a little pricey, but also quite special. It's a place that won't necessarily be everyone's cup of tea, and I was enjoying their reds without being too exalted until I had my first taste of their cabernet sauv, and oh baby. A little steep at $68 a bottle, but I know when the time comes to drink it, I will remember those dark berry flavors, near the water, on a lovely winter night, alongside good company. And that is a feeling that has no price tag. I look forward to returning to Chateau Margene in Morro Bay, and visiting their main estate in Creston! This place said it was dog friendly! It's not. We drove from Los Angeles with a tiny 4lb dog to be turned away! Our dog was in a stroller and the old lady dog behind the counter threw us out. I had one glass and it tasted like vinegar, she must have made it! read more

Looks like a nice place, but the female proprietor was less than gracious when advising us that we couldn't do a wine tasting with our micro dogs in a zippered-up stroller. The only reason we drove to this location was because it announced itself as dog-friendly. I guess that claim should be qualified with "except when it's raining". We came in around 1 pm on a windy Morro Bay day after getting a bite to eat down by the water. Our server's name was Randy, super knowledgeable local wine guy who told us a little about this low volume high quality winery. Wines are in the $50+ category, like so many of the wines in this general area. Not a bad wine on the list - Chardonnay, Santa, Lucia Pinot Noir, a GSM, and Cab. Sauv. A couple of tasty 18% ports as well. $20 tasting fee waved with purchase of 2 bottles. The tasting room is modern and comfortable. Had a wonderful afternoon wine tasting here yesterday. It is a wonderful location and a winery that we have been wanting to stop by and visit. Will was great, serving us both a great wine flight and some delightful olive oil tastings as well. He was very knowledgeable about the wines served and also the surrounding vineyard areas. We always appreciate great conversation! 2 nice Pinot Noir's, a well balanced red blend, and of course 2 wonderful Cabernet's!! They clearly love what they are doing and it shows in their wine production and how they treat there customers. We came to Morro Bay for 4th of July weekend. While walking the streets of the town, I stumbled upon Chateau Margene. I decided to try a few wines. Personally I prefer Napa Cabernet, but decided to expand my horizons and give a try to Pinot Noir. Not my first choice, but gave it a try. And, wow, totally fell in love with their El Pistolero and reserva. The wine dissapeared before dinner, and couple of days later had to drive here just to get another bottle. read more

Being a novice of wine, all I knew was I liked "sweet wines" so my friend and I set out to find some on a trip to Morro Bay. Having struck out in one tasting room already, we tried again at Chateau Margene. Will told us they didn't have sweet wines per se BUT he was going to have me try their Chardonnay. I was sold!!! Several years (and many bottles of wine) later, all my trips to Morro Bay must now include a stop to see Will and pick up a bottle of Cold Steel or their equally tasty 2019 Chardonnay or Sparkling wine. We were initially skeptical of a winery that opens a tasting room in such a touristy destination as the embarcadero, but the wine quickly changed our minds. We were fairly excited to see a tasting room right next to the water in Morro Bay, but were expecting some low budget mass produced stuff to thrive off of the tourist crowd. Boy were we happy when we found out that we were very wrong! James was our tasting attendant the first time we came in and was great. He is such a friendly guy and very knowledgeable about the wines. After a bit of a discussion my wife and I decided to join the wine club. Having a tasting room in basically our backyard is hard to argue, and when the wine is this good you have to join. We have now been members for about two years and enjoy it still. Every time we go in the wines are still excellent and James is a great host. The other couple people we have had as the tasting attendant have been good as well. The wine here is much better than we had hoped and we are very glad that they opened a tasting room in Morro Bay as we probably wouldn't get out to the winery in Creston. Their Mooney Family label is great across the board, but the Boekenoogen Pinot Noir is a real stand out. Their Chateau Margene Reserve wines are also exceptional. Still, some of our favorites are under their El Pistolero label, especially the Limitado Chardonnay. Overall their wines are definitely worth a visit to this tasting room, the location and staff are a great bonus! We also make sure to pick up a "bag" of wine every time we plan on going camping because you can't find a wine as good as their Meritage that comes in a camping friendly package. read more

My personal favorites were the pinots and the cab franc. And I was really pleasantly surprised by their ports which are done in the traditional port manner. Our server JJ was fantastic. I love boutique wineries in the Central Coast, and this one did not disappoint. My boyfriend and I opted to try one of each tasting menu so that we got to try everything. We were so impressed. Even the 2015 Pinot Noir was tasting amazing, and it had only been in the bottle for a couple of months. We ended up purchasing a bottle of one of the Chardonnays, the Cab Franc, and the Pinot Noir (which we're going to try to lay down until next year, but we'll see if we can manage to wait! ). read more

We were delighted to find during a recent vacation that Chateau Margene, one of our favorite wineries from the Paso Robles area, had opened a wine tasting room in Morro Bay! Located right on the Embarcadero, it's a beautiful relaxed atmosphere to try their wines (at reasonable pricing!), plus also try some unique cooking oils and vinegars. Don;t miss this place or their estate tasting room in Creston (15 miles south east of Paso Robles) which is open on weekends and where you might get to mee the wineries owners Mike and Margene Mooney.
