Wine tasting in the time of COVID is a unique challenge! I was staying in Cambria but struggling to find places either open at all, or open early in the week for tasting. Yelp helped me find Chateau Margene a short drive away in Morro Bay, and I'm so glad it did! Street parking was no problem on a Monday afternoon, and I was greeted by Max as I walked in and given my choice of outside table for tasting. Max was awesome to taste and chat with (we have the same hometown, what a cool coincidence!), and he very graciously took me through their 5 offerings with helpful and unpretentious explanations. It was so pleasant to sit in the evening air, taste lovely wine without feeling any rush or pressure, and be able to talk as fellow humans without it being all business. Their wines are a little pricey, but also quite special. It's a place that won't necessarily be everyone's cup of tea, and I was enjoying their reds without being too exalted until I had my first taste of their cabernet sauv, and oh baby. A little steep at $68 a bottle, but I know when the time comes to drink it, I will remember those dark berry flavors, near the water, on a lovely winter night, alongside good company. And that is a feeling that has no price tag. I look forward to returning to Chateau Margene in Morro Bay, and visiting their main estate in Creston! Thank you to Max and the family for showing me a lovely time - you stand out where so many others blend in and fade away. Cheers!

Love, love the wine! Actually, I prefer their pinots under the Mooney label, but if you love Cabs, don't miss this place! Not a bargain winery, but you get what you pay for. So. if you don't mind paying for a top notch quality wine, I recommend checking out Chateau Margene. average price ($50 bottle). The overall experience could have been more favorable had the wine pourer not been so engrossed with two other female visitors. He could have done better, especially since I have been a wine club member for over ten years. Was hoping for better customer service. Also, for a different tasting experience, you can make reservations at the Creston site. Happy drinking! Cheers

Very pretty etched glass bottles of 2 of our favorites served!

Had a wonderful afternoon wine tasting here yesterday. It is a wonderful location and a winery that we have been wanting to stop by and visit. Will was great, serving us both a great wine flight and some delightful olive oil tastings as well. He was very knowledgeable about the wines served and also the surrounding vineyard areas. We always appreciate great conversation! 2 nice Pinot Noir's, a well balanced red blend, and of course 2 wonderful Cabernet's!! They clearly love what they are doing and it shows in their wine production and how they treat there customers. Added note...they are open for outside service, reservations can be made but not necessary. Thanks again Will! We will be back soon!

Love this place! Will is the best at pouring you just what you are looking for! Great wine! Great service! I can't say enough great things about this tasting room! Must visit if you come to Morro Bay.

Amazing!!! The man behind the counter, Will, was very friendly, knowledgeable and willing to share stories of the entire wine process.

Girl's trip stop at Chateau Margene.

Being a novice of wine, all I knew was I liked "sweet wines" so my friend and I set out to find some on a trip to Morro Bay. Having struck out in one tasting room already, we tried again at Chateau Margene. Will told us they didn't have sweet wines per se BUT he was going to have me try their Chardonnay. I was sold!!! Several years (and many bottles of wine) later, all my trips to Morro Bay must now include a stop to see Will and pick up a bottle of Cold Steel or their equally tasty 2019 Chardonnay or Sparkling wine. If I can't choose, it's one of each! I couldn't be happier that an initial failed attempt to find a sweet wine lead us to Will and Chateau Margene (kismet )!

The views are beautiful, and depending on where you're seated, you can either enjoy the harbor scenery or spend some time people-watching. The artwork on the wine labels is stunning and adds a unique touch to the experience. I also appreciated the stories behind the wine names, the focus on small-batch production, and especially the charity bottle program. It's clear that a lot of thought and passion go into the brand. As for the wines themselves, they just weren't a fit for my palate, particularly at the price point. I recognize that wine preferences are highly personal, and there were others around the tasting room who seemed to enjoy them much more than I did. I also felt that the tasting experience could have been more engaging. Our server was pleasant not the most engaging, we felt like we were bothering her. Overall, I appreciated the creativity, mission, and atmosphere, even though the wines and tasting experience didn't quite resonate with me.

I highly recommend making a reservation, and it was definitely necessary the day we came since the high wind and rain warnings caused Heart to close all their outdoor seating. This means a lot less availability, but they worked with what they had and despite having to move us a couple times when we first got there, they got us at a nice table by the time we were just starting our tasting. Besides the delicious wine, you need to ORDER THE FOOD from Seaside where their food menu is from! The sliders and arancini were so so delicious. We will be back to pair our wine with this great food again (and hopefully get to sit outdoors next time!).

Hospitality is far more than delivering food and wine it is making every guest feel genuinely welcomed, valued, and cared for. When your name carries the legacy of Hearst, those standards should be even higher. The setting at Hearst Ranch Winery in San Simeon is undeniably beautiful. The oceanfront views are spectacular and make it a destination worth visiting. Unfortunately, the hospitality did not match the stunning location. This was our first visit, and sadly, it will more than likely be our last. Throughout our visit, it was evident that some guests received warm, attentive hospitality while others, including us, received only the minimum level of service. Hospitality should never feel selective. We ordered a charcuterie board, and after waiting approximately 30 minutes, I finally asked our server about it. Only then were we informed that we were expected to walk across to the General Store, pick up the board ourselves, and bring it back to the winery. We were also told that the winery kitchen is closed on Mondays and that the host had apparently been confused when taking our order. Had this been communicated at the time of ordering, the misunderstanding and the lengthy wait could have been avoided entirely. The apology we received felt disingenuous and lacked the ownership that transforms a service failure into a positive recovery. Mistakes happen in every hospitality business. What guests remember most is how those mistakes are handled. Hearst Ranch Winery has an extraordinary location and a name synonymous with excellence. I sincerely hope leadership reinforces that every guest deserves the same level of warmth, professionalism, and hospitality from the moment they arrive until the moment they leave. Beautiful views may bring people through the doors, but exceptional hospitality is what brings them back.

I tried to ask someone one time where the tasting room is and they weren't very friendly. But now it is very clearly marked and I was easily able to find it on my own this time. You can tell it's been newly remodeled. My friends and I decided to do the tasting. All of us like white wine only. They have a few selections but of course the one I really wanted to try wasn't available that day. And that was ok. They gave me 6 tokens to give one each time i wanted my next tasting. Well sine they didn't have one of the wines I wanted and white wine was more limited I asked if I could turn in two chips for two tastings of the same wine. And I did this also so I didn't have to come in and bother them as soon for another pour of the same thing. I was told they don't do that .... But then they did. It just doesn't make sense to me. I also was trying to be nice and I just felt like she was wasn't super friendly. This place has a gorgeous set up outside. They have nice comfy seating or high top tables which overlook the rolling green hills. This time of the year is absolutely beautiful. I can see the warmer months not being as pretty because I'm sure everything turns brown. I also loved watching the animals down below. The scenery was so majestic. I will definitely be back again. This will probably be on my list of "must visits" every time I visit Cambria. There are just certain places you that you always remember and must go back to, and this is one of them for me.

Unfortunately, the wines did not suit our tastes. Given the owner's pedigree as a sommelier, our expectations were high. I've always been a bit skeptical of organic wines, and the six wines in the flight confirmed my prior experiences. They all had a vinegar-like taste--imagine what a wine kombucha would taste like. You'd think there would be at least one wine that was good, but we didn't find one that we enjoyed. The atmosphere, however, was amazing! We loved the farm environment with a beautiful lawn and tons of room for kids to run around. Dogs are welcome, too! Our server, Stephanie, was also very nice and knowledgeable about the wines. Please know that this is just two people's opinion on the wines. Lots of people must like these wines given the reviews. Again, nice place , nice people, but it was tough to drop $70 on two tastings and not find one wine that we wanted to buy.
