I'd wished I had called Cheap John's first...When my bathtub was clogged and sinks were backing up to bathtub, I was frantic and desperate and did search, Plumber #1 with many years popped up. They didn't fix the problem but tried to replace unneccessary parts of bathtub. Eric advised me that Plumber #1 tried to replace something that didn't need to be replaced. Terriable. First of all they don't show up with the right tools. He brought a drain cleaner that had nothing attached to the end of the cable - so how is he going clean out a sewage line with that? They don't have an option to use a camera to look down the sewage line to see what the problem is and just assumed everthing is fine for whatever little work they did. Total scam artists and complete waste of money. Also super annoyed with calling us "good people" and saying how their reviews are great. DANGEROUS situation after Cheap Johns did work here! I will keep adding to this review but I just wanted to get it started. Cheap Johns is super expensive BUT add to that the lowest quality of service and how is that deal? They installed a water heater about 2 and 1/2 years ago (not 3) and I thought I smelled gas after but was not sure so I ignored it. I dont bring anyone down to the basement but had someone down tbere recently and they said they smelled gas clearly so I had an inspection. The inspector showed me gas leaking at every joint of where Cheap johns installed the water heater. John the owner called me and said he would not come to fix the gas leaks. I searched and found Cheap John's and John (real person and owner) is a treasure, he not only sent a Pro in the person of Paul and he serviced our sewage system - same day, no excuses and kept his word - and while we had 2 storms, and torrential rain NO BACKUPS!!! Do not work with! They came in to fix an issue with our kitchen sink leaking. They installed the wrong size pipe that caused our dishwasher to not drain properly but it took us a few months to figure out the issue. When we called back to ask them to come install the right size pipe they said we had to contact the plumber directly who came to our apartment and there was nothing they could do... when we got in touch with the plumber he said he would come and then cancelled 3 days in a row then completely stopped answering us. I called a couple of the 49.99 cleaning services for a clogged main sewer line and Chap John's responded to my inquiry to do the job. He came to the job and charged $200 to do the job and then gave me a half-assed guarantee stating that if I call within 30 days, (Monday through Saturday from 8 AM to 6 PM) he would do the job again for $49.00. I called him within 3 weeks because the drain needed to be cleared again, and this guy played dumb stating that "I don't even do drains". Three weeks ago I had contracted Cheap John's to clear a stoppage,by the time he got here the water went down but I asked him to service my sewer anyway. He went to his truck and came back with a hand drill operated snake with auger which you would use for a sink. When I pointed out that the auger w as to small and snake to short he assured don't worry it's guaranteed. Well it backed up again and when I called he said it would be $90. Thought I just had a backed up drain pipe . Eric showed up and tried his best to unclog the trap ,but after many years of buildup and lack of use he had called Mike . As soon as Mike showed up he assured me the problem would be solved . He a a great energy level and really seemed confident in his ability to fix what ever the problem is. He worked really hard and explained to me what he had to do , and how it would be done . With every step he showed me how backed up my pipe was , and had to replaced that section of pipe . He fixed the problem , cleaned up afterwards and did not seem to be in hurry to rush out. He went above and beyond trying to help me out on another issue I had with a toilet. You see that 5 star review (which I am flagging) by a guy Eric B from Merrick? Well, that looks suspiciously just like the guy who came to my house when I called Cheap John's for a clog. I was quoted 49.99, then all of a sudden it became a "BIG JOB" that jumped up to $250. When I told him to leave, "Eric" then called his "Boss" ( fake call, he pretended to be calling his boss but there was no one on the other line) who supposedly agreed to knock it down to $150 for the "BIG JOB". This guy was very nasty, kept complaining that he was tired and that this very complicated job (a simple clog) was holding him up from going home. There was lots of fake huffing, puffing and exasperated sighing, and when he realized I was alone with my child he became somewhat threatening and started ordering me around: "Move that!!! Go run the water!!!" and refused to leave unless I gave him $250 for the job. I made my daughter stay in the bedroom with the door locked. I should have called the police but I was intimidated in case he heard me, and I just wanted to get rid of him. Also, he left a big filthy mess. read more

DON'T DO IT. SCAM ARTIST! I called this guy because my sink and tub in my new (old) house had drained slowly. My handyman pulled apart the pipe and discovered buildup that needed to be snaked. I google searched and Cheap John popped up. I clicked on the site, and saw his phone number, $49.95, and 24hr service. PERFECT, right?! WRONG! After speaking with John himself, he assured me that someone would be at my door within an hour and a half. To his credit, that absolutely happened. Unfortunately, the price he quoted my handyman was $100 because it was considered an 'emergency service' because it was after 5pm. My handyman called me, and I in turn called John back and was told that indeed the fee would be $100. I asked how this could be when his site clearly listed $49.95 in big, bold numbers....his reply? 'Well, you have to click on the 'About Us' tab, and there it will go in depth on our pricing and what times the $49.95 price is valid.' OKAY..Quick question.... WHO OF ANY OF US TAKES THE TIME TO LOOK ON THE 'ABOUT US' TAB WHEN YOU HAVE A BUSTED PIPE, DRAIN, FLOODED BASEMENT, OVER FLOWING TOILET, ETC?!! WHY IS THAT INFO NOT ON THE HOME PAGE?!! OR AT LEAST HAVE $49.95* - WITH THE LITTLE ASTERISK SYMBOL SO I KNOW THERE IS A CATCH. I digress.. So, back to John. We continued back and forth about how his site is misleading and how he basically BAIT and SWITCHED me, and he got mad, said I should call Roto Rooter and hung up on me... Classy guy, that John. He was a scam artist. In the house for 30 seconds before he decided it would cost me $80 verses the $40 he quoted me. Said the clog was in two drains, sink and tub. He snaked the tub, and sent me to the basement to make sure there was no leaks...when I came back up he was done! Snake didn't have ANY cutting or clearing attachments... just cable. Clog returned in 2 days. Would guarantee 30 day guarantee on receipt! Arrived 2-1/2 hours late. Had a opportunity to use the service today. They advertise a $49.00 service, when in fact the minute the tech gets to your house, he lets you know that the service is $150.00. States the $49.00 is only for return service, if you have other problems down the line. What a lie, The service was 3x's what they had stated. I wish I could give zero stars! This is hands down the worse service I have ever dealt with. Extremely unprofessional, Eric showed up with barely any tools and made the issue worse than it was. He was unable to reach the pipe so took a hammer and started banging the pipes until something finally broke. Had to come back numerous times since the problem was never really fixed. Finally had to call another company, who came and fixed the problem immediately and we have never had another issue since! Not only did Cheap Johns not fix the issue, but we had to deal with someone who was extremely obnoxious over 6 times!!
