For over 1.5 years, I was unable to upgrade my Dell machine with the latest Windows version. No matter what I did, the upgrade would start and then cancel itself. My machine was slowing down to the point that it would take over 15 minutes before I could log in, in the morning. I did not want to go to the Big Box store for computer support and had been searching for someone I felt that I could trust. At a Clifton Chamber of Commerce event in July, I met Chris (the owner). And had a good gut feeling about him and what his company could do. So, I gave him a call. I set up an appointment and turned my machine over to one of his team members -- Shaq. I was told that it would probably take a couple of days to fix. Unfortunately, one week turned into two and then into three, as he attempted to get the updates to take. Finally, after almost four weeks (and this is NOT A COMPLAINT) he got it! Again, I am not complaining about this, as I needed to have this machine - the one that I use for business -- up and running. And as business was very slow during this time, it was okay. Now, my machine updates as needed, it is much faster than before, and no longer takes 15 minutes before I can log in. Also, I want it to be noted, that I drove 25 miles to have them handle my machine. So, if I drove that far, you know they are someone that I trust. Overall, fantastic job. read more

Shady Business Practices I was in the middle of an interstate move when my laptop decided to die. I had just upgraded the RAM a week before and installed a new SSD about 6 months prior so I wasn't worried about those things. With the limited resources I had with me during the move I did some diagnostics and it looked like a motherboard issue but I figured having recently put some money into upgrades I would take it somewhere and if they could fix it great, if not they could at least confirm what I was thinking and save me the hassle of doing the data transfer in the middle of the rest of the chaos. WRONG! Not only do they charge an arm and a leg for their services, but Cheaper than a Geek took about 2 weeks just to confirm that my motherboard was dead. Even with that, I was still going to pay their exorbitant almost 300 bucks just to get my data and be done with it when the guy asks me if he can keep the freaking laptop and tells me he won't even charge me for keeping it. Now, I have no idea if this is a common practice in MD or not since I normally build my own computers and do my own IT. But since I had told them from the start that I had just put $250 of new RAM in it, I was pretty incensed that they would even ask if they could scrap it for parts that they're obviously going to resell to their own customers, and act like they're doing me some kind of a favor by not charging me a "recycling fee." Around this time I started asking how much it would cost to just get it back immediately and they started ignoring my emails. It was 2:30pm. They stopped responding to my emails. I kept sending them until I sent one that was actually well after business hours explaining that if they ignored me and did the data transfer I wasn't going to pay for it, I just wanted my stuff back because they were obviously trying to rip me off. This is when they finally responded to all of my messages, very unprofessionally. Claiming they were just trying to offer the "greenest" option (for their pockets). All of the sudden I no longer just had a motherboard issue but also a hard drive issue, and my hard drive was "acting up" (it's a SSD, they can only fail in so many ways, they would not be able to recover my data if it had failed) and only THEY could recover it not me. Oh and they were closed the whole time I was emailing them from 2:30 on despite having replied consistently right up to the point of me starting to ask for my stuff back and not wanting to pay them more and more money. I told them I still wanted my stuff back and for them to not do anything further, they took 2 more days to "reassemble" my laptop. Seriously, this is something that takes a normal person 10 minutes. Finally, they call me and say the laptop is ready, and that they will drop it off at the UPS store in town, but first they want me to give them my credit card number over the phone BEFORE they drop it off. YES THEY WANT MY CREDIT CARD NUMBER WITHOUT MY COMPUTER IN MY HAND. Complete effing scam. I refused and they made me wait another day, set an appointment, and drive to their office to pick it up and pay. I paid in cash because I wouldn't trust these idiots with my credit card information or anything else. Oh and by the way. I took my hard drive home, hooked it up, and it's perfectly fine. I transferred all of the data, reformatted it, and am currently using it as a spare external drive until I get a new laptop to stick it in. Because it wasn't "acting up" there were no corrupted files or any other issues. That was a COMPLETE lie to try and get more money out of me for data transfer services. Cheaper Than A Geek: The staff at this place have a great approach to handling IT related issues. I had an malware issue I pre-confirmed on a windows 10 HP Dv6000 2012 laptop, prior to using there services and I didn't have the resources to handle it. They quoted me $95 for the scan built in the repair if it wasn't the issue. Turns out I was right and they handled the issues on top of providing additional services such as anti-virus, performance, and drive enhancement at no cost in under 5 days. These type of issues and take serious time which need to be handled carefully. The normal price could cost from $600 - 1000 dollars from Geek Squad or other repair shops. That's more than my laptop cost which would be worth it. They quoted me $200s, totally worth the cost and effort to remove the issue, time consider. read more

I title my review: "$95 (Ninety-Five Dollars My Foot)" When you call CTAG the number directs you to a call service. The agent dispatches your inquiry to a local technician. The technician calls you back. This morning the technician calls me and tells me its $95 to even look at the dang thing. The caveat being, theyll apply the $95 to the final repair fee. Ummmm no thanks! Im suppose to pay you $95 out the pocket to LOOK at my laptop???? Then when the repair man comes and tells me its $500 to fix Im out 95 bucks cuz theres no way in hell. Im paying $500 to fix a 2 year old laptop. NOPE! Idk why I was being lazy and calling up this service. Cheaper Than A Geek always provides me the best IT support at all hours of the day and night. It's hard to find a good apple-friendly tech company that truly knows the ins and outs of all of the products. They use a convenient program that allows their techs to temporarily share access (after I give them the password and permission) to my computer so I don't even need to leave my office when a problem comes up! Typically, they are able to resolve my problems using this method, but when there's a more intricate issue, they always make my problems a priority and meet one to one with me and are only focused on my devices and issues. This is a very nice feature because before using Cheaper Than A Geek, I would go to the Apple Store and their "geniuses" would always be distracted with other customers and their various problems. Whenever I call, I am always greeted by a real person who is then able to transfer me to a tech that can help, or I'm provided a timeline on when to expect a call back that day (usually within the hour). Their pricing is competitive and their customer service is excellent. They are committed to excellence and never turn a problem away. I had a rather bizarre issue with Gmail - in fact, no one had ever heard of the problem I was having - and the techs at Cheaper Than A Geek never gave up! They were able to research my problem on their end and came back to me just a few short days later and fixed it! I was so impressed that they were my advocate and determined to get things working. Cheaper Than A Geek is a company that I highly recommend for any technology issues that you may have, or even if you want to purchase new tech products. I got excellent service yet again. My son got a virus on his (almost brand new) laptop. They cleaned it up and protected it too. They offered to pick it up for free but I didn't want to be chained to the house for 4 hours waiting. I made an appointment to drop of off and picked it up 3 days later when I had a hole in my schedule. It's obvious they try to make the process as painless as possible, which I definitely appreciate! Cannot seem to get past the phone service they use. My first call went to their phone service and the service could not tell me if they had a service location in my area (was mobile and using my phone). Hung up and used my phone to locate the address. Went to the address and did not see them. My second call again went to the phone service while I was sitting at the business address the phone service was unable to find me anyone to talk to or verify the address and kept citing they were the "after hours phone service" and had no information. They said they could have someone call me back, I waited 10 minutes in my car then I took my business elsewhere. read more

I was not really happy with how much they charged & some techs telling me "your computer is ancient; you should replace it, it's cheaper" then I met Chris at a business MeeUp. He was personable, professional. His business plan & philosophy made sense. The information was clear and concise and most of all made sense economically. I had my husbands 6 yr old computer diagnosed by Chris. I explained his minimal use & no need for an upgrade. There was no argument, no hard sell, no disclaimer of "no promises because of the computers age". He diagnosed it & repaired it! Simple! When does that happen now a days? To top it off; the diagnostic fee was included in the repair fee so it was even cheaper!! Cheaper than Geek! No Joke! He didn't need the original CD's to reinstall information! I took my Acer AIO to CTAG for repair. Diagnosis was replace the HD. During the process, I was dissatisfied in three areas = 1) CTAG pricing is competitive, but in no way 'cheaper'. 2) I'd requested a quote for installing additional RAM. That estimate was never provided to me. 3) Upon booting up my 'repaired' computer, the HD worked fine, but the Optical Drive did not (Yes, the drive was working properly when I delivered the machine to CTAG!). IMHO, a reputable vendor will check the ENTIRE system before returning the computer to the customer. Will I utilize the services of CTAG ever again? - NO!! read more

This is great service center. Am older and not tech savey. They were wonderful with my husband who had his computer hacked while visiting in Crofton. He had all his files, financial and household on his computer, they were able to go through computer and check out all things assuring us of our safety. We live in the southern states and upon our return my iPhone was hacked, although I had Life Lock and Carbonite. I called CTAG and although away from their area they were able to give me great service and not only checked iPhone but also Computer and iPad. The service was immediate, personnel and was very helpful since I had no idea what to do or who to call! Remembering my husbands experience called CTAG. They helped with changing things to give me more protection and walking through everything with me. They were very patient and thoughtful in dealing with me. I will continue to use CTAG, my only other choice is the Apple Store and having been there recently with a friend would never go back. Very disappointed. Had a malfunction (crash?) on an old machine. Didn't really care about the machine but of course wanted the files and pictures. Dropped the computer off, was called the next day and told they could retrieve the files to a thumb drive and/or make the computer operable again. Being somewhat fearful I might screw it up, I requested they retrieve the files and pictures but also asked if I could get the computer back thinking I might use the memory and other parts in other computers. They said no problem. A few days later I picked up the thumb drive and the computer. When I got home I plugged the thumb drive into another machine and went looking for files that I needed or just wanted to confirm they were there. Guess what ? While many were there, some were missing. Fired up the old machine and fortunately the files and pictures were all still there. Called the Geeks. They were apologetic, didn't know what happened and of course didn't offer any price adjustment. Also, they charged me $50 for a thumb drive that is available for less than $20 anywhere. I spent an hour or more copying all of the files from the old machine on to another portable hard drive to make sure I had all of them. read more
