Bottom line: truly good 'New York' style and quality pizza! Rhode Island is a pizza desert. For this former (and always in my heart) New Yorker, getting pizza in this state is usually a disappointing, painful experience. There's 'Rhode Island' style pizza which can be OK, but let's face it - it's not pizza. It's flatbread. Sometimes you just gotta have a true New Yorker slice. Nothing fancy, just a 'pizza joint' slice like you can get on any street in New York. Dripping with gooey melted cheese, crispy crust, thin but not like a cracker, sauce that isn't 'sweet.' Checkers pizza is it. A slice is enormous, the size of two slices anywhere else. It captures the 'New York pizza joint' slice very well. By New York standards it's good. By Rhode Island standards it's OMG this is amazing run don't walk run to get it! Pizza took 1 hour and 25 minutes to deliver and i live 5 minutes away from it to start off, pizza came in looking great but boy was i wrong.. first it was literally bleeding grease through the bottom of the BOX, temp was good, dough was somehow stale!??! This is my preferred spot for takeout pizza in Middletown. Checkers makes a good pizza and offers a variety of flavors for their wings. Their salads are pizzeria-decent. These are their differentiators: 1. Particularly friendly staff. I'm made to feel like a welcome guest whenever I stop in to pick up dinner. 2. Welcoming atmosphere. The small dining/waiting area offers a number of free, classic video game consoles (and a pinball machine) to while away the minutes while awaiting an order. Additionally, they always have The Three Stooges playing on a tv hung on the wall. It's too loud for dining in, but it's just right a for a ten-minute wait. 3. Enormous pizzas. One XL square pizza, a large order of wings, and a salad is enough to feed my wife, myself, our three sons, and an additional guest or two on a movie night. That's a lot of full bellies for under a hundred bucks! They do a good job at Checkers Pizza. I hope they stay in business for a long, long time. read more

This place has become a neighborhood staple for us! We get them at least monthly. We're originally from NY, so I was quite happy when I found out they have a pepperoni new york style crust. Yes, you can fold it in half and eat it with one hand! (We add hot honey when we're home.) The pizza arrived, glossy and PIPING hot. A little greasy from the pepperoni but I like it that way. After 4 slices it was still so hot it could burn my mouth if I wasn't careful. Just wanted to give Checkers another shout out for how awesome they are. Consistently great pizza over the past year of us ordering from them. We have since come in to pick up our pizzas and holy cow, these guys love the Three Stooges!! The interior is small but has so many whimsical decorations, a TV constantly playing the Three Stooges, an arcade game, and checker boards on every table with pieces to actually play! My bf and I love to play while we wait for our pies. There have been nights where we've come to grab our food and its hasn't been ready, but one of the guys behind the counter tells us to grab a drink from the cooler while we wait. That's so nice! We found Checkers during our vacation to New England and man am I going to miss it. We drove around trying to find somewhere that was open late and there it was. We came in and were greeted right away. We chose to get our pizza and wings to go and let me tell you it smelled amazing and made it really difficult to not start eating on the way to the hotel. This is probably the best pizza I've ever had. So much flavor, so much cheese. I got to watch them prep the dough and assemble the pizza which made the whole experience even better. The restaurant itself is small, but very cute. There's checkerboard print all over. We are staying at the Castle Hill Inn and we were referred to Checkers. We ordered 1 and 1/2 hours ago and when we called the owner said that he was waiting for uber eats/ THAT was not true. 2 drivers waited while they worked on the order. He lied and said it was ready and when we called again he said it was very busy and they needed to get the "peppers and parmesan ready" We would highly encourage anyone traveling or local to not support this business. We love this place! We try to eat whole grains when possible, and at Checkers it's not a sacrifice. We've had and loved the Buffalo chicken and spinaci rigot pizzas with whole wheat crust. They also have gluten free and vegan pizzas. The garden salad was fresh, beautiful and plenty for two to share. We ate in, and enjoyed the Three Stooges playing on the screen.
