We needed a quick bite and figured pizza would be an easy choice. The restaurant was almost empty, & we were seated right away. We ordered a large cheese pizza, wings, a bowl of soup, & two meat lover's slices. The wings and soup arrived within minutes, but then we waited over 30 minutes for the cheese pizza & another 15 minutes for the two slices. It made no sense, especially with how quiet the restaurant was. During that time, no one checked on us, apologized for the delay, or refilled drinks. The biggest surprise came with the bill. There was an automatic 20% gratuity added for our party of six (!). We've eaten at countless restaurants & have never been charged automatic gratuity for six people (esp with our party being 2 adults, 2 teens and 2 kids). We were also charged $1.50 for a side of ranch that was brought out with the wings without us requesting it, plus $3.50 each for soda water from the fountain. "Tip in advance for PICKUP"+ on weak sauce pizza and a 4.5% upcharge for using a credit card to pay for an online order. NO other option to pay an advance order online than ccard so 4.5% is automatic upcharge. Next the "TIP"----I ordered pickup last week like SBUX the payment has an advance "TIP" on a pick-up order AND charging me 4.5% for ccard before I even get to taste the food or look at it. COVID is OVER. Pay your staff in the kitchen and stop with the "tip for pickup" it is soo annoying. I tip like crazy when I eat in or delivery..... but pickup?! STOP. This type of BS by fast food/pizza joints, diners, cafe's are forcing diner's back to Stop&Shop, Domino's, or Chili's or even high-end restaurants cuz they aren't much more than YOU! bc they offer VALUE which you no longer do. You forgot you were the cheap option for people--nothing more. Now you are expensive and mediocre= THE worst position. Same reason Starbucks is going to go under. If I can't taste my food/coffee FIRST, why on earth do you expect, earn or deserve a TIP from me "up front"? Esp when the food sucked, items missing, or timing is off. YOU should pay ME A TIP BACK when I pay in advance, and the food or service sucked. See how it feels right? Ordered a large cheese(really the size of a medium)pizza. It had a paper thin layer of cheese and just a slight touch of sauce on it. Literally a piece of cooked dough. If I did tip I woulda been piiiissssed. A $5 Newman's Own frozen pizza is HALF THE COST of your 4.5% upcharge and "adv tip for pickup" ALONE! and it easily crushed this Nikolas dough pie. I despise Domino's/chains but they have ya beat now. Lastly, at pickup the cashier stares at the receipt when you pick it up to ensure "you know they know you" didn't "tip-FOR pickup". I hate to know what happens back there to our food when we don't "tip for pay in advance- pickup" orders. Yeah I am not going there. But thankfully I won't know again. 20 years going and that is DEF my last trip. **Advice to consumers-CALL the pickup order in and pay when you get there. They will still stare at you for not tipping on a pickup order but at least your food is not effed up(or worse). Oh and if you do tip on advance pickup orders and the food sucks get your damn tip and your $$ back from the cashier/cook cuz they are glad to take/keep your $ even for extra bad food/svc. read more

Very disappointing experience at this restaurant. Had a large party but the restaurant was not busy, had to wait over 45 min for a table. At that point we should have gone to another restaurant but we were willing to still give it a try. The food was subpar and one of the entrees came out after we finished eating so we did have one of our guests who was not able to eat with us. The server Chris did his best to accommodate and offered us a free dessert but the overall dine in experience was disappointing. Hands down the best pizza place in Newport, RI, and it is a true local staple with real - family owned - Newport history behind it. The crust has the perfect light crunch, the sauce tastes fresh and authentic, and every slice has a great balance of cheese to crust. The toppings are always fresh and flavorful without being greasy. Broke down and ordered a pizza last night-- even knowing that the pizzas are small and high priced. Toppings were so incredibly expensive (3.50 each? For even onions and olives?) that it made sense to order a specialty pizza versus one with multiple toppings. Ordered the ultimate for 27.50, when I picked it up, it was well over $30. Apparently they charge a 3% credit card fee did not occur to me to dispute it when I left because I use my debit card. It's against the lawn Rhode Island to charge a credit card fee to anybody paying with cash or with a debit card so basically when they're charging people who pay cash or with debit cards, their pocketing that 3% that was never out-of-pocket for them to begin with Pizza was mediocre at best and not even true Greek style. The large is more like a 14 inch at best. Clearly, this place continues to capitalize on kids leaving the bars or tourists. Don't fall for the trap like I did-- never again. read more

This is twice we've ordered takeout from this establishment. This time we picked it up. The staff were very friendly and it was nice inside. I liked the fact there was parking available. The pizza and wings were still so yummy. We added a house salad which was good and nicely packed for us. The chicken fingers were okay but my Aunt didn't care for the breading, we're good. Three friends on our way to a concert - we let the waitress know and she made sure we had our food on a timely basis. I had the fig/prosciutto/goat cheese calzone and the small one was very generous. Hot, melty cheese, lovely tender prosciutto, sweet fig preserve - delicious! Good prices, too. Noise level was fine - we could talk with ease and hear each other no problem. The Winter special is a ripoff! I ordered large pie with 1/2 meat lovers and 1/2 Hawaiian. I was charged $31 when a meat lovers is $23. When I question the charge, the cashier explained the charge was $14 for the pie and half charge per pie for the toppings. I know it doesn't make sense! While she did offer to discount it, it felt like charity because I complained. The owner is at fault, I paid the bill. To top it off, the food quality is awful. The sausage tasted like fake meat. This spot is a home run. With half price entrees, apps and pizzas on Thursday and half priced pizzas Tuesday and Wednesday, you can't go wrong! The meatballs are right up there with the fine Italian restaurants in the area, if not better. The pizza (the ONLY place on the island to have a whole-wheat crust option) is very solid as well, as are other selections we've tried. The eggplant parmesan (pictured), while oily and thicker than I prefer, was very tasty. The meat sauce is perfect and reminds me of my nana's (the marinara, on the other hand, is great for those who like oregano in their sauce). Only a 2 because the staff was very friendly, but the food is simply not good. I personally don't like Greek-style pizza, and Nikolas' confirmed so. The major disappointment was the Greek salad w/ chicken, which I had high hopes for given the marketing of their heritage. The chicken portion was tiny, under seasoned, and not grilled hard enough (it was practically steamed in texture). Mistake! I've never ordered from this restaurant before. It may have been my mistake, but I ordered their Chicago style pizza. I assumed it was thin crust, because Chicago tends to be more thin crust, and it was not labeled. Instead, what I got was super thick, almost like they stuck the dough from two pizzas together. We ordered takeout - a NY style large pizza and Fish n Chips. Got it home to discover pizza was very small with an extremely thin crust, and overcooked. Wrong size, wrong style, cooked poorly. Fish was way overcooked, extremely dry, tasteless. Chips and slaw were passable. Worst part of this is we left a message TWICE on their "Contact us" box on their website letting them know privately of our displeasure, and were summarily ignored both times. Hard to believe, but NO response. I guess business must be so good they don't care, but hard to justify EVER going back and we WILL tell people of our experience. Nikolas Pizza is a literal godsend during the off-season in Newport when you have a craving for some hot and tasty grub at 1 AM, but nothing's open and you're too lazy to cook. We did just that after several hours of hemming and hawing over which restaurant to eat at, and by the time we settled in something, it was closed for the evening. Just our luck, right? However, Nikolas saved the day with some yummy (if kind of pricy) pizza slices and a giant Asian Chicken Sesame Salad that satiated our late night hanger. Granted, the pizza slices were massive (they were more like a quarter of a whole pizza than a simple slice), and generously topped with veggies, cheese, and barbecue chicken, and the salad was sizable and topped with fresh tasting chicken and a flavorful sesame glaze dressing.
