We visited Lafayette to meet up with a friend I've had since early childhood. Having been a vegetarian for about a year now, I always get a bit worried about finding vegetarian options in Indiana. Cheddar's, though, is a chain, so thankfully, they had a few options to suit someone like me. The restaurant is fairly large, with plenty of seating. Service was polite and attentive, even with a fairly hyper young child that my friend brought with her. (She's a kid! I don't fault her for her energy!) I do wonder, though, if the hostess ever feels a bit dead inside after greeting every new person with "Hello, and welcome to Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen"...it's clearly something she's forced to say, and I know it'd start to grate on my nerves, were I in her position. (I used to have to push store credit cards on customers when working retail. I hated, hated, hated doing that, so I guess that colors my view of the corporately-mandated phrases that staff are forced to say.) But if she did hate saying it, she certainly didn't show it. I was fairly impressed with the food. I hope that Darden doesn't completely destroy any of the good aspects of the food, because...well, Olive Garden, y'know. Anyway. Prices were great, especially for the amount of food you get! I ordered the vegetable plate with a baked potato, broccoli cheese casserole, corn, and mac and cheese. Huge, really - this was for lunch, so I barely needed dinner after that... My friend got a ribs and shrimp combo, my husband got a steak (I think?), and my friend's daughter got the chicken tenders kids' meal. All of us walked out of there happy and stuffed. (The quick walk around the mall helped burn off all of the cheese calories I ingested, I hope.) Every time I finished my root beer, the server offered to top it off. (I never get Barq's, especially living where I live now, so I always accepted.) Chain restaurants can be hit-and-miss, but I really liked this place. UPDATE: Something went horribly wrong at this restaurant very quickly. I could entertain you with stories of our last several visits (well over a year ago) but the last straw was being served a raw (I don't mean "rare" but full blown uncooked) hamburger and hairy onion rings at the same meal, after waiting an hour and twenty minutes for our order to be prepared. Management was apologetic and offered me a coupon for a free appetizer. I smiled politely, left a twenty for their trouble, then walked my family out for the last time. That sort of awful experience for five consecutive trips just isn't worth saving a few bucks. Sorry, guys--you lost a customer. read more

I went with a friend who really enjoys eating there. It was so-so to me. She suggested we start with their honey butter croissants. They were very dry and tasteless. We also had an order of onion rings. They were very good. She took them home to feel the birds, the croissants. Since it was advertised as home cooking, I had the country fried steak. I did not enjoy the breading and it fell off. The steak was ok. My friend always has the Monte Cristo she loved it with extra jam. I can tolerate any restaurant as long as they serve Diet Coke so I was okay. Service was very spotty. I like my server to least keep my glass filled or bring me one before I ask. Cheddar's was recommended to me by my friends, but what they didn't mention was the hour-long wait for my food! The restaurant was only about half-way full on a Tuesday night and the wait was sooo long. The chicken pot pie I ordered was very average and food portions aren't that big. But I suppose that had to do with the lower prices. Also, for whatever reason my friends got the exact same bill even though they ordered completely different meals. Great chicken strips, steaks pretty good, food pretty good all around although I wish they didn't add sugar to the green beans. Service...two times I've sat at the bar with others. The first time the service was awful and we were never offered refills on our drinks...this while only a few people in the bar, its not like the bartender was busy she just neglected her job. The second time we sat at the bar we waited about 10-15 minutes and the bartender never even offered us water let alone took our drink orders. This happened with only two other people in the bar, she just stood there hypnotized by her phone. So we left. Every time we went and sat in the family dining area the service has been great. It's unfortunate that they seem to hire terrible bartenders because we like the view of the aquarium from the bar but we'll never sit in there again. read more

The appetizers are good but the food is mediocre at best. The texas nachos are really good even if you get the meat taken off which I did. But I was really dissatisfied with the lack of flavor of the "New Orleans" pasta. I also ordered a veggie plate with mashed potatoes, corn, mac and cheese and broccoli. The mashed potatoes were salty and the mac and cheese lacked flavor as well. The atmosphere is nice and fancy but I will not be going again. read more

Food gets 3.5 Stars. Jenneice (my server for lunch) gets 6.5 STARS!!!! That's how I came up with the 5 star rating. Cheddar's does have good hot food but Jenneice gave great and warm service. For what it is - it's succeeding. Ambiance is often loud, especially following games. It has a family restaurant/sports bar feel. The salmon is good size and comes with 2 sides. There's also the option of a vegetable platter. Prices are reasonable for portions. read more

Decided to go to here for a dinner date yesterday and was blown away! The food was amazing and the service was too! My date and I ordered Wisconsin Cheese Bites for an appetizer. I ordered the Blackened Salmon with broccoli and coleslaw with a root beer. Everything on my plate was phenomenal. It was cooked to perfection. She ordered the Cheddar's Club with fries and a root beer. There were no complaints from her either. For dessert we ordered the Cheddar's Painkiller Mini Cake and boy was it delicious! My fish was under cooked my husband shrimp was over cooked but that's not why I'm writing the review. DO NOT sit at the bar to eat!!! It's the employee hang out. I even said something to someone about how it must be slow on the floor because everyone was hanging out in the bar. He just agreed with me and said it was annoying. I said yes it is VERY!!! Went here for a bit of a family meet up around 3pm on a Friday. The wait staff was attentive and very friendly and the whole place just seemed clean to me. The table ordered loaded fries which was pretty great, but entirely too many French fries and could probably be a whole meal for two people. Needless to say some were left over. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food and have enough to take some home too. I wouldn't mind coming back, but I don't think it's made it onto my favorites list for chain restaurants. read more

Not a great experience today and probably will not be back. Order was incomplete, old French fry in the mashed potatoes, then hard old black potato piece in my mashed potatoes... told the waitress after we paid our bill ... she gave me excuses both times I raised a concern. We tried Cheddar's with a family group and had a mixed experience. The service was a little slow. The place has a generic chain restaurant feel and didn't seem to have a strong identity. Not a good choice if your party includes anyone who is vegetarian. The menu only has one vegetarian entree (spasagna with marinara), but I was told (5 minutes after ordering) that it is no longer available and had to settle for the "vegetable plate"--a house salad plus four sides and a croissant. Many of the sides contain meat or meat stock. They were out of black beans and there are no other vegetarian protein sides. I ended up with a sweet potato, steamed broccoli, corn, and rice. The house salad was good (although it came out about 5 minutes after everything else) and the hard boiled egg and bleu cheese dressing (also good) provided some protein. The croissant had good texture but was too sugary. The sides were all ok by themselves but did not constitute a meal and were not worth the "meal" price. The lack of vegetarian entrees on such a large menu seems like a serious misjudgment of the Greater Lafayette community. read more

Way overrated Ordered a chicken salad and it was the worst piece of chicken full of fat and gristle. Went with the family and no one had that "wow" moment can't wait to come back. This place was really good! I was actually surprised how good it was, I was expecting sort of an Applebee's experience, but I'd say they definitely stepped it up a couple notches from Applebee's. The waiter even gave us free butter-honey rolls. They were amazing. I got the smokehouse burger, which was great, and a few friends of mine got ribs, which I tried and they were also great. The price didn't break the bank either! If you're looking for a place friday night, try Cheddar's! I love all the food that I have gotten from Cheddar's. I always get the chicken tenders dish in the buffalo style and it has never been bad. It is always fresh along with a side of broccoli and fries. I'm not a French fries person so I end up giving them away to whoever is having a meal with me and I've never seen them not eat the fries. Sometimes I get the chicken wrap or salad as they are also delicious. The servers are always willing to fix the dish if it was made improperly and highly attentive for refills. The peach tea is very sugary (almost syrup like). For those that aren't into poultry, I would recommend getting the bourbon glaze salmon, sweet glaze on top of seared salmon is very good. They have excellent honey butter croissants as well. read more

This place is interesting. Upscale indoor dining atmosphere that says fancy restaurant, but average American diner quality food that says Denny's. That being said, the prices are amazing and there is a good variety to choose from. They have a Monte Cristo sandwich which is so hard to find! We've been to Cheddars around a half a dozen times since it opened. The food and service is always great. Good steak, burgers and appetizers. The honey rolls as an app are delicious and cheap. This is the only time I will ever come here. The experience: We were seated and ten minutes later, still no waitress. She came over as we were about to leave and we stayed because it was late and no other restaurants in the area were really open. The food came out pretty quickly. That is the only positive thing I can say about the food. We had Spasagna, the Chicken Pot Pie, and the Fried Catfish. Every item was bland. The catfish was greasy. Went for dinner and was pleasantly surprised. Maybe management has changed since the bad posts started?? We had the cheese fries and spinach dip to start off and both appetizers were delicious! I had the fish tacos and really enjoyed them as well. Overall I think the food was well-made and decently priced, especially considering the great atmosphere you get to enjoy your meal in. -1 star for only having checked on us once which was when we were almost done, no lime with tacos, and sitting near the door which gets pretty drafty/chilly. Overall, though, I really think I'll come back. Edit: in response to the fish tacos tip, the tacos I got were huge, looked like large chicken tender-sized chunks of fish. Both my sister and I had to take all the turkey and ham off our sandwiches because it was slimy and something obviously was just not right. We told the waiter about the problem and the manager just stood watching and did nothing. When I order something and can't eat it, it's probably a good idea to remedy the situation as a manager so I don't have to come on here and show everyone the food I paid full price for. We were seated fairly fast, considering it was a Saturday evening. The experience went downhill from there. Four entrees and one appetizer were ordered. Waiter comes back in 15 minutes to check drinks (no appetizer in hand). Waiter comes back in 10 minutes and says he will check on our food. Manager shows up in 5 minutes and apologizes for the delays and offers free croissants (we had ordered extra as an appetizer with our entrees). Another 10 minutes pass and waiter shows up apologizing because he "forgot" to put our orders in the computer. He states orders have been placed and will be out ASAP. Another 20-30 minutes pass before our food arrives. Several mistakes were made with our entrees and our original order of croissants never arrived (we had already eaten enough to not care). The food ended up being fairly tasty and the prices were ok. The manager ended up comp'ing our two most expensive entrees and not charging for the croissants. We continue to hear the same experiences from this location. "Food is good but service is subpar" When will this location start reading and listening to the reviews. Lafayette is far to big/busy of a city to not have great service. People may just start choosing to eat at one of the other dozens and dozens of restaurants we have in this town of things at this location don't change. read more

"No mam I don't," as I took back one of the dollars. When did a tip become mandatory? She tried her best to weadle money out of me and OBVIOUSLY. With no shame! The upside: for a restaurant that does not have a gluten-free menu, or for that matter any type of dietary restrictions menu, they did a decent job trying to accommodate my gluten and dairy intolerance. I was with a large party-- almost everyone enjoyed their meal. Almost. The "meh" side: the 2 men's steaks came out way before the 5 women's entrees. 4 of the women got their food served at the same time, some 15 minutes after the men. The last meal served was mine and that came 10 to 15 minutes after the women's. By the time my food was served, everyone's else's food entrees were cold. [Yes, despite urging everyone to eat, in the end we are people who wait to eat until everyone is served.] The downside: the food was served in such a staggered and haphazard way as to be (almost) comical. Except, it wasn't. Truly not funny. The saving grace: being with family! read more
