I've been to this restaurant many times, and I used to love it. However, I will not be returning anytime soon. It's a very bad look to see multiple employees standing around talking to one another while you sit and wait for over 20 minutes for someone to come take your order. This was not prime dinner hour. They were not busy. It was literally our table and one other in the whole restaurant. I had to walk over and remind our waiter that we still hadn't ordered, and I was told that he'd forgotten we were there. We ordered a cheese board and drinks. After another 15 minutes, we received the cheese board, but still had no drinks. Even the water was never refilled. We told the person who delivered our board that we had nothing to drink, and she said "I'm not a waiter." Our waiter finally came to check on us and admitted he'd forgotten about the drinks. He came back (cheese almost gone now) with the wrong drinks. I ordered a glass of wine, and he brought me iced tea. I took a sip of the tea because I was really thirsty, and it was so old and nasty, I had to spit it out. At this point we decided to leave and go somewhere else for dinner. They'd never bothered to take our dinner order anyway. The waiter did give us a discount on the meal and gave me a free bottle of wine. That's the only reason I'm giving a 2nd star. If this had been a one time bad night, I wouldn't even write a negative review, but it's not. We went a few months ago and had a similar experience. I chalked it up to struggles during COVID and had no hard feelings. But it's gotten worse, not better. In 2019, the last time I went before today, was during art on the avenue, so the place was swamped and they were definitely overwhelmed; I had a terrible experience with poor service and horrible food. I decided not to hold it against them since I'd had so many previous good experiences and went back today. I will never go again. The food was horrible. So horrible in fact, I asked for a new grilled cheese and when they brought it, it was terrible too. Their cheese selection is really strong for a small place. I didn't give them five stars, however, because something is always wrong when I go there. I bought a gift card during covid to try to support them, and there was always some issue with it that took 10+ minutes to resolve each time I placed an order. The last time I ate outside the service was soooo slow and the time before that, they sat us and then a server never came to our table so we got up and left. They have forgotten items in my take out orders as well. I decided to try it based on comments I saw on Facebook and I really liked the pictures on their website and was expecting something really good but I have to say I'm disappointed. I ordered to be delivered at my place and it was just me on a lazy night so I only ordered the famous mc n'cheese. Not only it was a really small portion for the price, I didn't really get a good taste of it. Mc n' cheese is supposed to be creamy and it was very dry, barely any sauce so really not a lot of taste, just pasta. It's been awhile since we've visited and while it was appreciated that there were several more outdoor tables available, it was still overall mediocre. My husband said his lunch was good (although $18 for a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup is a little steep). I felt my cheese board was just okay, it was kind of off putting to have corn nuts as an accompaniment to my cheese board. I tried the 5-cheese board, dessert wine flight, mac n cheese and the pimiento cheese sandwich. Cheese Board: 'Grumpy goat' - Maybe the goat was having a good day but I found this cheese to be a bit too mild and somewhat more plain. I think this goat is a little grumpier when alone and I defintely tasted more of the flavor and subtleties of the cheese eating it by itself. I recommend eating it alone. Overall I liked the sharp cheeses a lot, and some of the creamy buttery ones as well. This is a great way to find out what you like and what you don't even if you don't know a lot about cheese. Cheese servings are generous and the bread you get is refillable. Comes with baby pickles and grapes as well. Pimiento Cheese Sandwich This was AMAZING. It came out perfectly crisped with hot gooey cheese. I'm guessing they used a panini press because the bread was perfectly grilled without having any of the cheese or bread burned. I loved the pepper taste in the cheese and how perfectly it was all blended. This sandwich is worth a trip by itself. Mac n cheese: This came out nice and hot and was pretty tasty. It's one of the better mac n cheese I've had in the area. It comes with a blend of goat gouda, pecorino, asiago, and truffle infused bread crumbs. Wines were yummy My favorites were the Apple Ice Wine, and the Vintage Port (smith Woodhouse Portugal, 2003) Service was great and friendly. Riddle me this, What does a non-essential government employee choose to eat as her last dinner before an impending government shutdown on one of the gloomiest, rainiest days of the year? Cheese. And lots of it. Ten minutes away from my apartment in South Arlington (aka: the ghetto), lies a magical place called Del Ray where Main Street still exists (I didn't make that up that is really their tagline). My friend Anita and I headed straight to Cheesetique, a speciality cheese shop with a small wine and cheese bar nestled into the back. We thought about getting a cheese board to share but it was so dreary outside we decided to go straight for the comfort food. Anita ordered the mac and cheese which came out hot and bubbly with a blend of goat gouda, asiago, percorino and trufffle-infused breadcrumbs. This definitely blew Velveeta's macaroni and cheese shells out of the water...and I LURVE Velveeta's macoroni and cheese shells so that is saying a lot. I ordered the grown up grilled cheese which had a "prarie breeze cheddar" (aka: white cheddar) on it and it was so delicious I was singing oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-my-gosh out the door. To fill out our meal we each ordered a cup of their tomato soup which was thickened with bread crumbs not cream which is a good thing because as Southeast Asians we lack the proper enzyme to digest dairy products. If that doesn't sound heavy enough we also decided to split a ramekin of their warm bread pudding. It was perfect -- light, airy, custardy with crunchy brown sugar bits spread throughout. Diagnosis? Delicious. If this is what Main Street is like I will squash my Hollywood dreams and stay here forever. read more

Can I award more stars? How about 8? For my 30th birthday my husband threw me a surprise party in Cheesetique's dining room. It was FAB! He had approached owner Jill Erber a few months before, asking if he could rent the space for a private party. Shockingly, she had never done a private event before, nor had she really even thought about it, but she agreed to work closely with husband to arrange the event and see how it went. Jill helped him pick out wine selections and incredible charcuterie boards that included all kinds of wonderful cheeses, meats, and accompaniments and were resupplied when running low (good thing, because I could eat my weight in cornichons). The awesome waitstaff tended bar and circulated the room making sure our guests had enough to eat and drink. I had the BEST time, it was a truly memorable milestone birthday, and our guests were blown away by Cheesetique's food, atmosphere, and service. Oh, and Jill was so pleased with how everything turned out she's now renting out the space for private events! Oh this place is just heaven. No really, if heaven smelled like stuff rotting in a cave and made you unbearable full just by looking, this would be it, and I would love every bit of it. There is just SO much to choose from! The bleu section (my favorite) had to contain at least 30 types, and best of all you can sample to your hearts content. In the twenty minutes I spent in this shop they brought me over 4 samples and gave me an additional 5 that I requested. How awesome is that? Pretty damn awesome indeed. The ladies here are so nice, and hell I would be too if I got to delve into the inner workings of the cheese society on a daily basis. I picked out about a quarter pound of 6 cheeses, and 2 boxes of crackers and it tallied up to about $45, a fair amount considering the quality and quantity of my selection. Be sure to check out the pictures for the finished product. One of the really cool things about this place is they give you a complete description of every cheese, including which wines to pair them with and the stink-factor of each one, because we all know the more pungent the better. There's also a large wine selection here, with quite a few things I recognize as top quality deals, along with some decent Belgian beers. The condiment section is second to none, with a horde of the best cheese accouterments I've ever seen. If that's not enough to satisfy your snacking needs, Cheesetique fortunately carries a large selection of cured meats, including Serrano and Iberico ham! read more

I was put in charge of finding a spot to get my girly gossip on and after perusing through food pictures on Facebook, I came across a picture of two beautiful hot dogs--one topped with truffle mac 'n' cheese and the other with mustard and bleu cheese--from Cheesetique. Mission: complete. My two girlfriends and I were going there and eat those wien...hot dogs. The meat had a crisp exterior and the condiments were superb. Very creamy mac 'n' cheese, nicely sharp mustard, and tangy bleu cheese. My only complaint, however, is that the buns were lifeless -- a bit dry, a bit too doughy. Because it was Sunday brunch, I was able to have chorizo potatoes as a side, and those were phenomenal. Outside of brunch, the side options are salad and potato salad. Service was decent; not great, but not terrible. The front of this cheese boutique (Cheesetique -- get it?) is a small shop selling things from cheeses to wine bottle openers, while the back is the actual restaurant. This place was tailor-made for me. As a lover of all things wine & cheese, it was adoration at first sight upon glancing at their menu. While the front of Cheesetique operates as a cheese & wine shop offering all sorts of fresh cheeses, snacks, and wine (beer too!), the back of the venue operates as a dimly lit, cozy dining room. There's also a bar near the front of the venue that offers some great happy hours (Wine Down Wednesday!). The grilled cheese sandwiches I'd highly recommend are the Sassy Goat (goat cheese, avocado, crispy bacon) and the Grown-Up Grilled Cheese (cheddar on sourdough). The truffle bread crumbs that top the variety of mac & cheeses are also a highlight. Cheesetique is a highlight in the wonderful neighborhood of Del Ray. I came with girls. I thought this place was a very small place but they took us to the back of the restaurant. It was very huge. There were a huge selection of wins on the wall. My fiancé and I had previously visited the Cheesetique location in Shirlington Village and had absolutely loved it (I gave it a 5-star rating). We decided to visit the other location (in Del Rey in Alexandria) and while we enjoyed our experience, it didn't completely amaze us as much as the Shirlington location did. We visited on a Saturday night with no reservations (and we didn't need any). We were seated right away and loved the intimate, cozy ambiance. Service was excellent and our waitress was friendly and helpful. I wasn't the biggest fan of certain aspects of the food, which I'll get to down below. We ordered: -Cheese platter - we ordered 3 cheeses and they were accompanied by multi-grain flatbread, a roll of bread, cornichons, and grapes. The cheeses we ordered were: Honey Goat (from Canada), Leerdammer (semi-firm, cow, from Holland), and the Saenkanter (firm, cow, from Holland). My favorite of the cheeses was the Leerdammer, which has a perfect texture and taste. My fiancé had the Honey Goat almost entirely by himself. I tried a bite, but I generally dislike goat cheese. We enjoyed our cheese experience overall. -Drinks: My fiancé ordered two types of beer, while I ordered two types of wine - a chardonnay and a reisling, to be precise. We enjoyed our drinks and thought they paired well with our cheese platter and entrees. -Entrees: My fiancé ordered the cheesesteak after realizing they no longer serve the Hot Diggity Dog Duo (he had ordered that at the Shirlington location and has fallen in love with that dish, as had I). I had read the reviews for this location and seen that dish mentioned somewhat recently, so it was disappointing that they no longer had it when we visited. My fiancé liked his cheesesteak but wasn't completely amazed. I ordered the "Grown-up Grilled Cheese" and also a small tomato soup. The soup tasted a bit funky (and I generally am obsessed with tomato soup) and I wasn't a huge fan of the cheese in the Grilled cheese, but I ate my whole dish anyway. Sides - Our entrees came with one side each and I opted for the potatoes while my fiancé opted for the rosemary chips. I wasn't entirely impressed with my potatoes - not enough garnish on them and they tasted plain. I was, however, impressed with the rosemary chips (very nice seasoning). Overall, the entrees were fine, but nothing extraordinary and a bit disappointing when compared with the entrees we had had during our first Cheesetique experience. -No room for dessert, but my fiancé appreciated the complimentary chocolate chips that they provided when they gave us our check. Note - Parking isn't too difficult here. We parked in the lot at the back of this restaurant for just $2. Not sure if there was a specific time limit, but we paid the parking attendant once we exited our car (he gave us a little permit to put in our car) and didn't have to pay more than that. The restaurant is located in a nice location in Del Rey (Alexandria), with tons of other great restaurants and shops around. It's not too accessible via metro, but can be accessed by car or bus (potentially). They also have outdoor seating, which is a nice perk on warm days, but we opted to sit inside. Great place overall and we would certainly visit again, but we would most likely visit the Shirlington location instead in the future. read more

All four were delicious. If you eat here they also give you 10% off any cheese purchase. The dinner service was wonderful. We all ordered some variation of the macaroni and cheese as well as the Sassy Goat sandwich. My favorite was the seasonal macaroni that was spicy. The eating area is separated from the store with a red curtain. The eating side has a bar and a few dining tables. We received great service and enjoyed the intimate eating space. I ordered from this place based on the reviews. I had been wanting to try them for a while. Ordered a NYE meal a day in advanced but wish I hadn't. When I arrived to pick up my order, they told me the main dish I order was out and if I wanted something else. Given that I order 24 hours in advance and my contact information was on the order, it would've been nice if they had contacted me and told me this prior to my arrival time. I declined to order another dish and they said I would be refunded. I've yet to receive a refund. The service was attentive, and food was tasty just as it should be. Upon arrival, we had a table in the back room...which makes this place a little bigger than it looks. We passed a grocery cheese section, table seating and a cool bar area on the way. The back room looks like a wine room because its decorated with bottles of wine along the wall. The decor and surroundings was surprisingly nice and not too loud. We did the charcuterie board (pick 5 @$23) we did three cheeses and two meats (just loved their pate mouse). Great thing you can get their cheese sat the front of the store (I bought two of the cheeses for home). Their mac and cheese and grilled cheese were a bit rich (considering so much cheese). I really did like my cauliflower and pancetta mac and cheese ($9) and recommend it highly (need just a tad more cauliflower). Let me just get this out of the way - the mac & cheese is really, really good, but just needed some salt (that's just me though) and I will always dislike the sight of a fly around food. All the cheeses are labeled and even say where exactly it is from (cow, sheep, goat...) Dine in, shop, or both. $5 for a glass of [really good] house wine + tons of other wine options, lots of cheesy meal options (large, small, and some not cheesy), sit at the bar and make conversation with the staff, or sit at a candle lit table with friends. Hold on, that was just the adorable dining area in the back. There's no way you can neglect the shop you walked in from, full of chocolate, wine, and most importantly: the cheese. SO many different kinds of cheese. Words can't begin to describe how happy my mouth was when I found out there was wasabi cheese. This is one of my gf's favorite places in the area, so we dropped in to meet one of her friends. Within minutes I could see why she likes it so much. The ambiance is relaxed and quiet, with tables that are well spaced which is important in these pandemic times. She ordered the Grown-Up grilled cheese sandwich, which looked wonderful, but which I did not taste - usually she gives me at least a bite of what she's having, but this time she devoured her meal, relishing every morsel. Her friend did the same (with the same sandwich), so while I can't tell you that it's the best grilled cheese out there, I have indirect evidence that his is the case. I had the Mac'N'Cheesetique, which was glorious, smooth and creamy with lovely truffle notes, a perfect specimen of mac'n'cheeese. All this paired well with the wines we imbibed, which came promptly with a waiter who was courteous, knowledgeable, and who abided by pandemic safety guidelines. read more

Before I started my Paleo diet, I spent a good portion of my life and money here. It was well spent. Great food, wine and people: his is the definition of Joie de vivre. Now that I eat Paleo a have eliminated cheeses, I dream about this lace. The wife wakes up mad at me, wanting to know who the hell Oregonzola, Cardona and Tarentaise are. The folks working behind he cheese counter will teach you everything about cheeses, one sample at a time. And they're patient and forgiving with people like me who will eat their way, again, one sample at a time through the entire assortment of cheeses and meats they carry. But beyond the fantastic selection of cheese and meats, the shop carries a terrific assortment of artisanal chocolates, breads, sauces, mustards, etc. There's a small restaurant and bar at the back of the store. The bartenders are fun, the drinks are great. And the restaurant, while a bit cramped (realtors would call it "cozy" and "intimate") serves a fantastic array of dishes. The macs are decadent. That's all I can say. And you should not miss the salads, the plates and boards, and sandwiches/grilled cheeses. The worst thing I've ever put in my mouth, and that's saying a lot if you know any of my exes, is the Gjetost & Banana sandwich--I was being adventurous and I paid for it. No reflection on Cheestique whatsoever. Love, love, love this place and wish I could relocate it to Colorado. Every time I travel back to NoVA, I stop here and violate the rues of Paleo. A wonderful evening with exceptional cuisine and dare I say it - a west coast vibe. The cheese and meat selection are of artisanal variety, yet the service is un-pompous and discrete. My friends and I enjoyed a glass of wine each, along with the six item cheese plate. The portion was perfect and we even elected to substitute a cheese selection for an item of their meats (Bresaola). The side dishes that accompanied the plate were fresh and well paired with the cheese selection. Not a bad way to cap off a Saturday night, dining under the stars on Main Street. About a 3.5: I had this eatery bookmarked for a while, so I was pretty excited to try this place out for lunch on a Saturday. When you enter, there's a little deli with spreads, bread, cheeses, as well as meats. We were lead to a dining area in the back (I didn't know how big this place was!), and how pleasantly surprised I was when we were sat at a table with a big red velvet loveseat! :D For some eats, we started off with their Seasonal Crostini, the Bacon n' Cheddar - I thought the crostini would have been crispy, but it was actually just soft bread with melted cheese and bacon cumbles throughout - it was nice and salty, and there were 4 slices on the wooden paddle. We also tried out their French Onion soup (slow-cooked caramelized onions with a beef broth base, topped with a baguette and Gruyere cheese); I wished there were more Gruyere cheese, like the country french onion soup, but the broth itself was actually pretty good. The Mac 'n Cheesetique (goat gouda, asiago, cacio di roma topped with truffle-infused bread crumbs) was just okay - it was more on the bland side. My absolute favorite was the Gjetost & Banana grilled cheese (Norwegian Gjetost and banana on a cranberry walnut bread with bacon) - it was sweet and savory, loved the chunks of banana, the cheese, and the bacon - the whole thing was like a meal and a dessert in one. The cranberry walnut bread was quite nice and complemented all the ingredients well. I chose the potato salad as a side, but it was just way too vinegary for me - I would like to try out their field green salad or their rosemary chips next time. Service was quite pleasant. I would definitely come back here for the Gjetost and Banana grilled cheese, as that was so delicious, and maybe get their Charcuterie platter with some of their cheeses.
