I'm going to start by saying I am an Asian Food snob. Lots of pick up orders, but most of the pick ups were from non-Asian folks. Food is not salty which is a good thing, the sauce tasted the same for their Dan Dan noodles and for their vegetable chop suey. Their rice is not the "good" Jasmine rice, it's basic rice. I have ordered from this restaurant in the past when they first opened and the food was incredible. The last two times I ordered from Chef Chen the food quality was so poor. My boyfriend and I recieved cold food, and his sesame chicken had a staple in it. When I told the manager about this and that he had to pull a staple out of his food they did not seem to care, and wanted the food returned entirely. I did not receive a refund for that order for several weeks because they refused to admit that there was a major problem with this order. The second time I ordered from them will be my last. I ordered a spicy beef fried rice. The beef tasted old and like shrimp. Really strange tasting and disgusting. I'm more than certain the meat went bad but they cooked it anyways. When I told the manager about this she did not believe me and told me I would have to bring the food back to her without a refund. I was so infuriated with this response, because now twice they did not want to take responsibility for poor food quality. I demanded a refund in cash, and to have someone come get this spoiled food out of my apartment. When the manager arrived with my refund he complained that this was the second time I got a refund from them. I simply ignored him and took my money back. This restaurant has gone downhill quickly in being open for a very short time. If I could I would leave a 0 star rating. read more

I ordered for delivery on a Sunday afternoon. The food was sooo good, the chicken was tender and not dry like other places. The receptionist and delivery guy were both very nice and friendly. They said it takes about 30-40minutes but it always shorter than that. I will definitely order from them again, i had orange chicken, combination low mein and tsao chicken. read more

Chef Chen is a very low drama, low frills kinda place. Atmosphere is good not great. Menu selection is satisfactory not immense. A very satisfying but not overwhelming experience. The upside is, what do you want from a little strip center Chinese food place in the small community of Rowlett. For a town this size that already has six or seven options (four basically on the same intersection of Dalrock and Lakeview Pkwy) this place has had some staying power. The interior is rustic Chinese with some nice appointments. Self serve condiment area with tea pots and extra plates (unusual but great idea). More "here's this if you need it" than "get it yourself". On this occasion I had the Szechuan Beef lunch special which came with soup (wonton for me) and egg roll (which i think was actually a spring roll). The food is prepared in plain site (unlike some Chinese restaurants). Wonton soup was just warm and wonton noodle was a little chewy. Spring roll was fresh and crispy just how I like them. Entree was made with a lot of the sauce which sometimes seems a little oily and too thick. I am not particularly a big fan of the "gravy" type sauce because it's frequently too rich and heavy and begins to congeal if you don't eat it fast enough. However, this time the portion size was about right so i didn't really have that issue. Also, the flavor was very savory and spicy and had a goodness that was very satisfying. The ingredients were fresh and still had good texture to them, even given the sauce. I would say that if you live in Rowlett, you should definitely try Chef Chen for a change from China Lake, Hong Kong and Royal Buffet. It is probably not as good as Van Chan's for what I've had so far but it's well worth trying more of. Beyond Rowlett borders it may not be worth the drive. You would probably have to drive past better Chinese food places to get here. But if you're just in the neighborhood and looking for a Chinese food place that you can leave with some money in your pocket and not be dissatisfied for stopping, Chef Chen is a good choice. read more

Chef Chen is our second favorite chinese spot in Rowlett! Their food is always really fresh, they have quick delivery, and they are a local! Service is always really great and we have never had a problem with any of their staff or management. I have gotten several things from them but one of my favorites thus far is the Mongolian Chicken. It is really tasty, not too greasy, and always comes piping hot. Their vegetables are always crisp and fresh and never overcooked. Totally delicious, super efficient, love this place! read more

By the time we brought it home, 10 minutes away, all the food was cold, and flavorless. Hot and sour soup was not salty enough and had a funky bad ingredient flavor to it. All the chicken dishes were covered in thick syrupy flavorless sauce. We tried Chef Chen because of some positive reviews we had read on our neighborhood app. My husband ordered a chicken dish and I ordered a beef dish for takeout. The restaurant told us they only use white meat chicken but there was barely any chicken meat at all - it was mostly strips of chicken fat! And, the beef in my dish was full of fat, too. Quick lunch whilst the boy did homework with the Lin's daughter. Great family place. Mrs. Lin is a peach and kept an eye on the kids. The Orange Chicken and Garlic Shrimp were solid for a little mom n pop joint and a cut above the regular Fry and Go. Only down side is I wish they delivered in our area. I don't know why it's taken me so long to write a review for Chef Chens! I have been frequenting here for years now. My husband and I ate here on a Sunday afternoon for less than $13 together. This includes soup, entrée, rice and egg roll for each of us. It is enough food that I am always able to bring left overs home. The inside is nothing to speak about, but the food is ALWAYS fresh and delicious and they get your order out in lightening speed. It is the only Asian hole in the wall that I visit. First time trying this place. Ordered 2 bowls of egg drop soup which was let me say a serving of 6!!! Ordered combination fried rice: it was decent nothing I would go back for and then the Szechuan chicken...well it was skinny and no flavor at all the texture was not something I have ever felt before and I love Szechuan chicken. I order solely because of the good reviews but now I wonder is it that I ordered close to closing time and I got the leftovers or the scrapings?? Or did I catch the cook on a bad day?? Either way I don't think I will come back here and or order take out from here . Update.... Got an alarm on our cameras again and there was these two ladies at the door. We went to answer the door and it was the owner and her daughter. They were very apologetic, for the behavior of the teen agers that work for them, and brought gift certificates for us to have a free meal on them. They asked that we please do not make that one night, determine whether we use them or not in the future. They seemed very sincere and we will be eating there again. Wow! Did not expect the food to be so good! We just moved to Rowlett & decided to order local since this place delivered. Hubby ordered the Cathay Combo & I had the lettuce wraps & some egg drop soup. The Cathay Combo was nice & spicy. The lettuce wraps were awesome! Very generous portion with 1/2 head of lettuce. The egg drop soup was predictable - my only complaint is that it didn't come with the fried wonton strips. We will definitely order from Chef Chen's again. read more

Super disappointed with this place. First off this review is a reflection of customer service or lack thereof. The food is delicious so pretty bummed they ended up being totally unprofessional. Ordered two entrees and some chowmein which the girl rudely corrected me saying "lomein" k whatever you call it, sure. Every order comes with freaking rice, nobody needs a container of rice for each entree that's insanity. She reads my order back to be and I'm like no not chicken fried rice, chicken lomein, the noodles. She says "oh yeah, noodles" I repeated it one more time just to make sure. My husband gets back and they forgot the lomein and replaced it with chicken fried rice. Annoying yes, but not the end of the world so I called to hopefully rectify the situation. First off the girl answers the phone and I explained what happened and she hands the phone to her boss and other girls are in the background laughing saying "is she super mad?" And they keep going on about it as if I can't hear them. So the manager gets on and I told her what happened and she straight up says "there's no way we messed the order up, You ordered chicken fried rice" She repeats this a few times and doesn't listen to me. I was being super nice and all she had to say was, let me fix that issue and maybe a free entree for next time considering this was my first ever order placed with them. Then she goes on about how I'm wrong. Wow you have some lady balls to be so rude to a customer. Why would I make that up? I will never bring my business here again and if they think it's okay to treat a customer so poorly, I refuse to support any business like that. We have ordered from Chef Chen for years and had been pleased with their food. However, something has changed, the last 2 times we have ordered take-out the food has been below sub-par. The 1st time we thought maybe it was a off night, but 2 nights ago it was just as bad if not worse. Both times the spring rolls were literally dripping with grease, the included rice containers were not filled (plus, rice was gooey), and on the last order the Four Seasons seafood was not good (odor).
