I was craving some American Chinese food so I decided to try Chef Chen's. Ordering online from their website was easy and the food was ready within 10-15 minutes after ordering. There is no indoor seating. It is takeout only. I overall thought the food was just okay and a bit under seasoned surprisingly. I actually reached for the salt shaker for the food. I did find the portions to be large though so I thought I got decent value here. -beef and broccoli was kind of bland and gummy. This one needed salt. -kung pao chicken was also okay but needed salt. Chicken was a tiny bit dry. -sesame chicken was not bad, a bit on the sweet side but I kind of liked it actually. If you reheat you should use a toaster oven or equivalent so that it's crispy. read more

I have been getting takeout here occasionally for many years. I looked at the reviews and wondered what changes I'd experience. I asked about the change in ownership I'd read about, and the Chef Chen employee told me it is now being run by a different member of the same family. So how was the food? No frills Cantonese style fast food type Chinese food. Good bang for your buck, laughable complaints about fried rice not having enough add ins (go to Panda express). Lunch combos have big portions for under $15, chicken with veggie and beef and veggie w/ fried rice are my go to. Fast quick service, hole in the wall but good hardy meals for the price point! read more

Make sure you look at your total. They added a tip without my consent. And they are overpriced. Not going ever again. And they didn't give receipt either. Slick which I don't appreciate. Food isn't that great either for the price. read more

Packaging and recipes of the food has changed drastically in recent months most likely due to change in ownership/management. It is my belief that the food is suffering as a result. It's clear the restaurant is undergoing changes and unfortunately I cannot recommend this restaurant until the old flavors/textures are reinstated. read more

Did this place change management? We noticed the portion size are smaller thank before but same price. The chicken pieces are chunkier (I loved coming here because I liked how they cut their chicken which allowed it to stay crunchy on the ride home). We have been going to chef Chen's for over 25 years. I understand that the owners have changed. But we thought we would try the new situation for a big dinner on Christmas Eve. Fortunately the food fell way short. Flavors that we were so used to are just not there. The food was kind of bland. Did not have what we were so happy with before. We also were disappointed pet for such a large expensive order. We did not get any condiments, soy sauce, fortune cookies, etc. My family and I will not be going back unless we see reviews get better. We are now on the hunt for a new Chinese food restaurant for the first time in 25 years in Redwood City. read more

Just what I wanted was fast Chinese food that wasn't Panda. I'm completely satisfied with the cashew chicken and fried rice. I've had better potstickers but definitely not bad. Really nice gentlemen running it and cooking too. I'd definitely recommend it if you want good Chinese food to go. read more

I've been eating here for years. The food is pretty good and if you're talking about Chinese food in Redwood City this place should be in the conversation of places to try. I love the bbq pork fried rice and sesame beef and the chicken version. The service is quick and to the point and you can get back to work if you're short on time. The inside is small but has a welcoming feeling to it. read more

Wow!! This was super disappointing and nasty. The fried rice had no vegetables, meat or eggs. It was just white rice fried. Rip off!!! The beef and broccoli had no flavor. The wonton soup had no flavor. Don't waste your time or money!!! Never eating here again read more

I've been to this restaurant plenty of times I regret it now I just pulled up. I saw the chef outside cutting his toenails. I went to the door and ordered my food. The chef came from behind after cutting his toes, grab the plate and the piece of paper with my order on it and started trying to make my food. I told the guy forget it. I did not want the food. He was just cutting his toes and he did not wash his hands. read more

Ambiance: this restaurant seems to be only for carry out or delivery. No indoor seating available, just as a fyi. Service: quick, no frills service. They have a menu posted on the door when you walk up to order. I think their specials change on a rotating basis. Food was prepared in less than 10 minutes after ordering for me. Food: just as you would expect. Most of the menu items are standard Chinese American dishes. The price is somewhat on the pricier side as dishes will run you -12-15$ but I think they do a decent job of giving adequate portions, as it will probably feed average person 1-2 meals. Ive only tried their walnut chicken, which satisfied the craving. Nothing too special to write home about. Some of the chicken pieces were too doughy, but it tasted freshly prepared. read more

Open and following social distancing guidelines and enforcing mask policy. They take walk-up orders or over the phone. This place never disappoints! Ordered the general's chicken, chow mein and broccoli beef. The food is made it to order, tastes fresh and is quick! We always order extra to have leftovers the next day. Great spot! Today I tried Sesame Chicken lunch special with fried rice. $8.45. This time, I only got a single fried wonton as an appetizer. Once again, airy with no filling. The Sesame Chicken was more like diced chicken, battered then deep fried and quickly glazed with a sweey sauce. A little dry. The fried rice better...not as dry as last time. We came here this past Monday for take out after coming to the court house to square some jurey duty business away. I had heard so much about this on Yelp & drove by & we saw how busy it was last year. It is some of the best I have had. It is interesting as you order outside & wait in your car; the guy will either call out your order or bring it to you when it is ready. My orange chicken over rice was excellent; tender chicken with a lite badder & flavorful slightly spicy cause. The rice was perfectly done, not dry or soggy. My mother loved her Singapore style rice noodles. The cool part is is that we had enough for two days. We will definitely be back to try more. So, for some wonderful Chinese food at reasonable prices with friendly service, Chef Chen's cannot be beat. Keep up the good work guys. read more

The boyfriend and I always wanted to try out this spot because we live just next door. Passed by it a few times when we would run errands and see a good amount of people every time. One day the bf was craving some Chinese food and decided why not give this place a try. Ordered some lunch plates before 3pm because it's a little cheaper. Ordered orange chicken w/rice, beef broccoli with chow mein for an additional price and eggplant for around $40. Thought it would have been cheaper. Everything we ordered lacked flavor. This is a hidden gem of Redwood City! It's a small place with a few tables... But it's EXTREMELY busy! Kung Pao Shrimp with fried rice- fried rice is nothing special. The kung Pao shrimp was a bit spicy and it was yummy! Shrimp was pretty skimp though. My entree was mostly bell peppers & peanuts! General Tso Chicken- must try! Love the sauce! Salty fish fried rice with chicken- OMG. This is the reason why I didn't give the place 3 stars. I love salty fish. It's a great idea to make it into a fried rice dish! Yes... Hole in the wall place. Food is delicious compared to some places in San Carlos /Redwood City. I'm use to good Chinese food in Sf. This by far is good. One complaint is that pricing for hole in a wall food chow mein since COVID has gone up. $13 for chow mein $13 for sweet sour. I guess it's understandable due to "inflation" so I give it four stars for minimal customer service, pricing. Just order and speak loud and clear otherwise you'll have a back n forth convo and won't get your order right. LOL read more

Once a while I have a hankering for a specific form of chinese food, such as fried rice / fried noodle, basic stir fry dish. Chef Chen's by no means is a fancy chinese restaurant. It's basic but it gets the job done. It fulfill your stomach with good quality chinese food while not breaking your wallet. Parking is definitely an issue with the petite parking lot that's hard to maneuver with limited space, what else can i say, just come early then. Must try is their spicy chili oil, i know.. it's not one of the dish, but I add that oil onto everything, and everything turns from good to even better! read more

Colleagues ordered general chicken and it should be private chow! Expertly glazed bread crumbs! That's what it was! Tonight, on the way home, 2 entrees of "general chow," again, glazed bread crumbs with dried chicken. Don't order! Owners! Hire more chefs! Don't batch cook thoroughly then recook! Bad!!! And don't be greedy. In the last 8 years, your clients have increased exponentially! Or sell it to capable owners. I will not go back unless my colleagues bring in quality. Our office USED TO EAT HERE 1-2 days a week. Service was ok, it's pricey but food was convenient and close to our building. Food overall was better than decent tasting, so thats 1 star along w/convenience. After a few weeks of consistent visits, we started to notice pricing was getting gradually higher than usual. We had a supervisor attend w/us and she ordered appetizer chicken wings $8, bowl of rice and a can of coke. Her bill was $16 w/no tip. We were dumbfounded & asked whats the breakdown. They were charging a single bowl of rice $3.50 and soda cans $2.50!!!!!!!!!' Most/99% of all asian restaurants charge $1-1.50 for rice and same w/soda. Menu states soda diff pricing but when asked about it, she said old menu. Rice is not listed in side dishes etc. smh wth? Needless to say, our office stopped going here and ow boycotting (lol) this place. read more

More like boiled chicken topped with raw Safeway vegetables, whole peanuts, and a soupy cornstarch soy sauce afterthought. The kicker was they do not have any house made sauces, so if you want good mustard or something edible for dipping - welcome to shitty packet hell as they refused to provide those (if they existed). I'm curious what they do when you're in-house but if I''m paying for the same food I'm not sure why I wouldn't get something besides high-fructose corn syrup garbage stamped out in a factory two years ago. This reflects lack of care to the product and customer experience. Highly unfortunate for an establishment that used to be "decent" as I said.

I would come back if I'm in the area, maybe to try some of the other dumpling flavors.

Food is delicious and flavors are comparable to the popular Chinese restaurants in San Francisco. Dining-in service is always friendly and very attentive. This is a very good place to entertain family and friends. My favorites are Sizzling Braised Tofu, Dry Pot Fish Fillet, Dry Pot Chicken, Sliced Tender Pork Chop with Salt & Pepper, Hong Kong Style Pan Fried Noodles, Braised Dry Green Beans, and Chinese Broccoli with Garlic Sauce. There are so many other good food options that it is impossible to order in one meal. We'll keep coming back!

Yan's brings me back to those days. We've been eating here more often over the past few years, and we have our regular dishes: chicken and corn soup, pork chops with Peking sauce, green beans, potstickers, and of course mu shu pork. Not sure who came up with the idea of a tortilla with hoisin sauce wrapped around cabbage, pork, and wood ear, but somehow it works. We usually have leftovers since the portions are quite large. There's other interesting stuff on the menu too (especially the Szechuan dishes) but most of the time we don't have enough room to order them. They also do drinks, and I like the lychee slushee. The staff is super friendly. Happy to have this place within a few blocks of home for some Chinese comfort food.

Cheesy, tender, egg fried rice was flavorful. Portion kinda small, as the dish was very shallow. Not a lot of rice. The soup was not good. The roast duck was good, with tender meat and fatty skin. Flavorful with the plum sauce. The fish congee was good, though a bit too runny imo once cooled down. The fried donut (you tiao) was crunchy and very doughy. Would be nice if they could slice it. I can agree with everyone about their thoughts on the 18% mandatory tip fee, it's crazy lol. Mandatory service fee for hk service (which is minimal service). It was so hard to flag down the waiter for refilling water, or to get more napkins. The place was empty and they were on their phone the whole time. Waiting for that automatic tip. Whatever man.
