    Complimentary Hot and Sour Soup
    Chi L.

*Parking: Located in downtown San Carlos, free street parking or there's a little lot nearby. *Experience: We came here on a Friday night and it was pretty busy. We were seated immediately by Susan, the owner. As we were dining, we noticed that Susan really makes her rounds to ensure that her customers are well taken care of. Service was super friendly and we were checked upon a couple times throughout our meal incase there's anything else we needed. The menu is quite extensive and is definitely on the pricey side for $20 per dish for standard Chinese food. I do appreciate the complimentary cold cucumbers and hot & sour soup as appetizers. *Food: We ordered the salt & pepper porkchop, king Chuan stirfry beef, and two bowls of white rice. I appreciate that the white rice is very fresh and fluffy. As for the main dishes, they were pretty standard. I was a bit disappointed in the salt & pepper porkchop because there flavor and spices were only on one part of the porkchop and not the rest. So some of the pieces were bland. As for the stirfry, this is something you can make at home for a fraction of the cost. Both dishes were pretty lackluster and did not embody the depth of the "wok".

    Steam rice

This was hands down one of the worst dining experiences I've had. The older male waiter was extremely rude, unprofessional, and immediately made the atmosphere uncomfortable. The Mongolian beef was nothing like what it should be--completely bland. The noodles had no flavor, and the steamed rice was dry and hard. The customer service was terrible, and the way we were treated felt discriminatory and very uncomfortable. Between the poor service, bad food, and unwelcoming environment, I absolutely cannot recommend this restaurant.

King Chuan Restaurant really hit the spot for us! Staff members and Aunt Susan were all very nice and Aunt Susan took the time to describe some of the dishes we had questions about and the staff were proactive in checking in to make sure our meal was going well. We also got bowls of hot and sour soup plus the marinated cucumbers on the house which was a very nice way to start out the meal. Our main dish was the steamed sole fish fillets with ginger and coriander and green onion and it was really really good! The flavors are very authentic and exactly what I remember and expected from eating during family meals and also Chinese restaurants. Paired with white rice, the flavored soy sauce with the garnishes is soooo delectable! We also got a dish of tofu and vegetables for the extra health points and I always appreciate there being many veggie dishes available at Chinese restaurants. I would highly recommend King Chuan if you are looking for very home style authentic Chinese food in the area! The restaurant itself is also cozy and reminiscent of the many Chinese restaurants I have gone to with family and friends.

My family has been eating at King Chuan for a very long time. Really wonderful service and the staff could not be any nicer! Hands down one of the best things you can order is the egg foo young!! Browned, tasty and the (chicken) sauce is so flavorful! The sizzling rice soup also has our family's stamp of approval!

Looks kind of unassuming on the outside, but step in and try some delicious food. It's a bit pricey at $20+ for nearly every dish, but everything we ordered was really good. My favorite was the sesame crispy beef and beef chow fun! The meat was nice and tender, and well-seasoned. The honey walnut prawns were also really good and the portions were alright, could have been a bit more for the price imo. The service was pretty good and staff were nice. There's pretty much no ambiance in here tho, the restaurant was silent and so it felt kind of awkward. Some music might be nice.

And an order of potstickers. First off , it's very expensive. But everything is now . For wonton soup, 4 potstickers , 1 kung pao, 1 sweet and sour pork, fried rice and a side order of potstickers it was almost $80 . The actual entrees were really good ( sweet and sour pork, kung pao chicken) service was friendly and fast . BUT I have been searching Redwood City, San Carlos , Belmont and surrounding areas for a decent potsticker. Sadly to no avail. Oddly enough the best potstickers are at cache creek casino over an hour away at Chang Shou. This place is no different. Their potstickers were undercooked perogies. Not sure they know what a potsticker is around here. Most places mislabel by calling them gyosa, or dumplings, or even buns. A good potsticker is firm, well cooked and as close to burnt on the bottom as you can get without actually causing a char. They are not ....wet, soggy, doughy, or a straight up undercooked pork bun. I would come back for the entrees but it's just too expensive.

Curry Beef Stew I've never had Curry beef stew before, prefer chicken, curry, but for some odd reason, I decided to order this dish. It was underwhelming and I won't order it again. The Curry sauce itself was OK but the big long pieces of beef were somewhat gross, lots of fat. They added plenty of slices to onions and a few pieces of green pepper and Julienned carrots, but that's about it for being called a stew. So I learned my lesson by not sticking to my usual order, and won't order wonton soup or curry beef stew again.

Cheesy, tender, egg fried rice was flavorful. Portion kinda small, as the dish was very shallow. Not a lot of rice. That's when you know it's done right. This wasn't that. Suss The baked pork chop with cheese and tomato sauce was so disappointing and super greasy/heavy. The meat was chewy and had an unpleasant flavor. The tomato sauce was not good either. The shrimp wonton noodle soup I sadly cannot recommend, the filling was not good. Had more pork than shrimp consistency. I did not enjoy the flavor. Not aromatic. I will say, the noodles were great quality. Thin, bouncy, correct texture. What you would hope for. The soup was not good. The roast duck was good, with tender meat and fatty skin. Flavorful with the plum sauce. The fish congee was good, though a bit too runny imo once cooled down. The fried donut (you tiao) was crunchy and very doughy. Would be nice if they could slice it. I can agree with everyone about their thoughts on the 18% mandatory tip fee, it's crazy lol. Mandatory service fee for hk service (which is minimal service). It was so hard to flag down the waiter for refilling water, or to get more napkins. No Wok fire/heat evident in any of the entree's and everything was a gluey, flavorless mess. The noodles for the Lo Mein seemed honestly just spaghetti. The orange chicken was dry/old, almost no breading, and honestly didn't taste orangey at all. The kung pao looked like what my 7 year old could have made (when we was seven). More like boiled chicken topped with raw Safeway vegetables, whole peanuts, and a soupy cornstarch soy sauce afterthought. The kicker was they do not have any house made sauces, so if you want good mustard or something edible for dipping - welcome to shitty packet hell as they refused to provide those (if they existed). I'm curious what they do when you're in-house but if I''m paying for the same food I'm not sure why I wouldn't get something besides high-fructose corn syrup garbage stamped out in a factory two years ago. This reflects lack of care to the product and customer experience. Highly unfortunate for an establishment that used to be "decent" as I said.
