I had a very nice early dinner at "King Chuan Restaurant" in San Carlos. I was there at around 4:30pm, on a sunny Tuesday. I got a tip from another Yelper that the food is good here. My server/waiter was an older gentleman. He offered me a table by the window. The table setting was very thoughtful. They offer chopsticks, but there's also a fork and knife wrapped in a red cloth napkin. They gave me ice water, but I also asked for hot tea. King Chuan has a detailed menu, with several dishes having a brief description. I ordered Wor Won Ton Soup. I asked for dark meat chicken only. They said "no problem." The Wor Won Ton Soup was very good. The soup had napa cabbage, carrots and broccoli. The chicken was tender and easy to eat. It also had pieces of beef and a few shrimp. The broth was light, and not salty. I also ordered the "Hot Dragon Chicken Wings." With a name like that, I expected very spicy wings. The wings were not spicy at all. In fact, I had to add salt to bring the flavor out. I was puzzled as to why these fried chicken wings have a mild flavor if they're served with spicy seasonings. I guess I was expecting something else. Overall, a nice experience. Anytime I'm in the Bay Area for work I try to find a great Chinese restaurant. Several of my colleagues and I decided to give this place a try, after seeing the good reviews. I had a good feeling when we walked in and they were so welcoming. They sat us and immediately got our drinks and answered any questions we had. The service was awesome the entire time we were there. Everyone ordered their own meal but I had the sesame chicken, which is my favorite go to dish. The chicken was perfectly cooked! I loved the crispness and flavor. I've been coming here on and off throughout the years for Chinese New Year dinner, lunches, and dinner. The people here are welcoming, friendly, and deliver attentive service. I'm a fan of their Deluxe Won Ton Soup, which is a craving I get from time to time. However, I've deviated to other dishes, and everything is always tasty, generous with the protein and fresh veggies. If you dine in, the wine is decent and well-priced. The atmosphere is also calming and enjoyable. They are consistently nice and make delicious Chinese food free of all that heavy oil and sauciness. I ordered wor won ton soup and Mongolian beef. I asked for no broccoli in the soup but it had several pieces in it. The broth itself was bland , only had a few pork dumplings but very overcooked so there was a lot of wrapping pasta in the soup. Won ton soup can be flavorful , this was not. Mongolian beef can be quite flavorful and zingy with the red chili peppers. Nicely cooked tender beef and onions but again the dish overall was bland , rather uninteresting. This was hands down one of the worst dining experiences I've had. The older male waiter was extremely rude, unprofessional, and immediately made the atmosphere uncomfortable. The Mongolian beef was nothing like what it should be--completely bland. The noodles had no flavor, and the steamed rice was dry and hard. The customer service was terrible, and the way we were treated felt discriminatory and very uncomfortable. This has literally become the only Chinese restaurant I go to on the peninsula. I used to go from Chinese restaurant to Chinese restaurant, never letting myself fall in love. Then one day I tried King Chuan and it made an honest man out of me. She's the only Chinese restaurant for me now. Seriously tho, it's crazy good. King Chuan Restaurant really hit the spot for us! Staff members and Aunt Susan were all very nice and Aunt Susan took the time to describe some of the dishes we had questions about and the staff were proactive in checking in to make sure our meal was going well. We also got bowls of hot and sour soup plus the marinated cucumbers on the house which was a very nice way to start out the meal. Our main dish was the steamed sole fish fillets with ginger and coriander and green onion and it was really really good! The flavors are very authentic and exactly what I remember and expected from eating during family meals and also Chinese restaurants. Paired with white rice, the flavored soy sauce with the garnishes is soooo delectable! We also got a dish of tofu and vegetables for the extra health points and I always appreciate there being many veggie dishes available at Chinese restaurants. Imagine this it's New Year's Day and all you want is to veg out with your significant other and have Chinese food in bed. I have walked by this place on plenty of occasions and each time my husband and I say we want to try it out on New Year's Day we didn't want a burrito. Looks kind of unassuming on the outside, but step in and try some delicious food. It's a bit pricey at $20+ for nearly every dish, but everything we ordered was really good. My favorite was the sesame crispy beef and beef chow fun! The meat was nice and tender, and well-seasoned. The honey walnut prawns were also really good and the portions were alright, could have been a bit more for the price imo. The service was pretty good and staff were nice. I'm embarrassed to admit that I've lived in San Carlos for over 20 years and just tried King Chuan last year. The food is excellent and is comfort food for me. It reminds me of dishes that I had growing up. I asked them if they could make something that wasn't on the menu and they did with no hesitation at all. I decided to try them for lunch because my typical downtown chicken salad elsewhere was getting a little pricey. For the same price as the chicken salad, King Chuan has lunch specials that come with entree, rice, soup and salad. It's my go to place for lunch now! Also I've noticed when the owner was there, she would stop and talk to every table. She knew many customers by name but just the fact that she made the effort to talk to her customers made me smile. It's important for me to mention this because there was a San Carlos restaurant that recently closed down but after eating there for the past 20 years the owner not once ever acknowledged us or smiled our way. (Also the owner of the other restaurant took my to go order over the phone once and when I asked if my sandwich could be cut in half, he said no--that it wouldn't fit in the to go box that way. Ordered this via doordash for the first time! It was promptly made and delivered (still hot). We really enjoyed the BBQ Pork Chow Mein and General Tsos chicken. Something that really stood out was the "realness" of the protein. Even though the chicken is breaded it was more chicken than bread, a great surprise! Everything was amazing and so fresh! I told them at the beginning that I have a gluten allergy and they were so accommodating, which is always such a relief as someone with an allergy. They went over the menu with me to explain what I can have. Many of their dishes are already labeled as gluten free, but they are able to make some others gluten free by using tamari/gf soy sauce, instead of regular soy sauce. I haven't been able to enjoy chinese food often since not a lot of restaurants accommodate a gluten allergy, but this place did everything they could to offer a ton of options. I have never flied a review before but this offering was painfully lacking in quality and portion size. A bowl of egg drop was mostly broth with little egg. General Tsao's Chicken was over-battered and also a small portion which maybe when eating in would result in better offering. Fried noodles ordered were just stringy .dry topping. I found this place 7 years ago when my son was just a baby. I was in San Carlos and hungry. We decided to try this Chinese Food and have been coming back ever since. I actually drive all the way to San Carlos just to eat here. It is one of the only Chinese restaurant I eat at. It is so hard to find a good place. My favorite items are Authentic Kung Pao Chicken, paper wrapped chicken, beef with black bean sauce chow fun, Chinese chicken salad, and crab wontons. If you are looking for Chinese food and are in the area definantely check out this place. It is one of my sons favorite restaurants and mine as well. read more
