Feeling good and groovy! So much I gave Chef King five stars! Actually I'm sick. So here it goes: I ordered the small hot and sour soup and wonton soup, the chicken and broccoli with fried rice. The portion sizes are pretty big! Like I'll have dinner tomorrow with the leftovers and that makes me happy! As for MSG, I called and asked about that and the person told me they don't add any to the dishes other than what's in the soy sauce. That's all right with me. The hot and sour soup has a great flavor to it and I really enjoyed it! The wonton soup also had a great flavor and a fair amount of wontons for a small size. Yay! So what's up with the chicken and broccoli you ask? Well, it's super tasty! I actually really enjoyed the flavor and the portion size is enough for two meals. Now the coveted fried rice: Well, it's your standard fried rice. The flavor is nice although I couldn't tell if it was just rice and soy sauce of if there was egg in there too. I love when places put snow peas and carrots in their fried rice but I can only thing of one place that does around here. I think it's Truly Asia. I can't remember though. The person who took my order was super nice and warm. I think this place is worth it for everyone who enjoys Chinese food! Families would love the value they get from ordering because the portions are big. Single people or daters would love it too because you can probs squeeze two meals out of one. Stay away from this restaurant. Got shrimp combo Lomein takeout, and the meats were all spoiled and taste like ammonia. Had to throw it away. When I called them and tell them about it, they said they have no idea why I feel this way because nobody complained. Very disappointing and potentially dangerous place. read more

What a bummer...Chef King really seems to have gone downhill. Several years ago I worked next door, and would order from them ALL THE TIME. Szechuan Chicken (with white meat, please) and wonton soup. That was my go-to, and it was freaking delicious I tell you. That's what I ordered, plus Pork Fried Rice, when I was back home visiting family recently and we decided Chinese takeout would hit the spot one night. Unfortunately, it was almost all bad news. The wonton soup was kind of bland, but okay and edible after putting plenty of hot mustard in the broth. The fried rice was decent on its own, but the pork was fatty, flavorless, and unappetizing. Those are the best things I can say about this meal. As for the Szechuan Chicken, you don't have to request white meat anymore as all dishes come that way, but the meat was weirdly soft and spongy. The veggies were greasy and soggy. And the whole dish tasted like it was cooked on a wok that hadn't been washed since 2009. 95% if it went in the trash. We ate most of the soup, and the fried rice after the pork had been sorted out for disposal. We won't be back anytime soon. read more

Not the best, not the worst. Our food was hot and looked appealing and included generous portions. However the chicken, despite being drowned in sauce, was really dry inside and hard to chew- we couldn't taste chicken at all, only breading and sauce (both the teriyaki chicken and orange chicken were this way). The rice was really good as was the tofu. Overall would recommend but maybe we just got stale chicken that had been reheated, or it was an off batch, I'm not sure. I was a little hesitant with this location, but decided to give it a try & sure glad I did. It's always fresh and has an authentic taste. I tend to purchase the shrimp Lo Mein, Kung Pao chicken which has the perfect amount of spice and veggies. My favorite dish here is the sesame chicken--nice and crispy and with a good flavor. The main dishes are very generous and are enough for two people (and come with a lot of rice too). I haven't tried the lunch specials. I always call ahead, which works well; it takes 10 or 15 minutes to get the food ready. read more

I've been to hundreds of Chinese joints from LA to NY. A great Chinese food restaurant will be all about the food. This place is like that. With the name Chef King I expected a great meal from an American Chinese joint. That's what I got. I ordered ahead for a quick lunch. The lady told me 15 minutes it was done in 10, of course, 1 STAR ADDED. What I didn't expect when I walked in was that it was an actual small kitchen restaurant. Not the scoop combo style joint with food pre made sitting under heat lamps. So 1 STAR added for that. The place was very clean and simple which means the food is gonna be important. No menu or pics on the walls just a few tables and chairs and the sign and jade floral pictures on the wall. A display of soda cans you can purchase with your food. I already got my water so I'm set on that. 1 STAR ADDED The old lady comes out already knew what my order was and says one moment and serves my soup with my meal. I ordered Sesame Tofu with Hot and sour soup. The bag is steaming and I'm happy. Pay only $7.50 for it and I'm out the door. 1 STAR ADDED. The serving is perfect for Chinese lunch. Comes with a wonton and egg roll. Not in common but also not common to come with either without extra from the dollar scoop or mall joints. Sea same tofu is fresh and still hot from cooking fresh to order. 2 scoops of fried rice which is great. Not greasy and you can taste the rice and egg. The tofu has the sauce all over and the crispy rice noodles under for an extra crunch. Always nice eating those things. Wonton is fresh and creamy and egg roll is great veggie and pork for sure. It is as good as it get compare to any $1 scoop places. The place is small it's flocked with surrounding workers during lunch hours. I ordered the combo chow mein with fried rice. The chow mein ( crunchy cereal chips ) with frozen everything mix and fried. The shrimp, chicken, and beef taste like it should. Fried rice was just. No vegetables added or onions. I was reluctant to try it (it's kind of unassuming and most of their business seems to be take out bc the space is small) but after a recommendation from a friend, I'm glad I did! The lunch special come out to just over $7 after tax and includes a ton of food. Soup, cream cheese wonton & spring roll plus your choice of a pile of white or fried rice I've tried it a few times and everything I've had was tasty but their sesame chicken and sesame tofu are awesome! So crispy (even leftover) and really saucy, just delicious. Veggies seemed really fresh in stir-frys we've tried. Sooooo my husband and I really love this place. Sure the wait is always long (15mins=30mins), but in our opinion, fresh delicious food is worth the wait. We love the sesame chicken, jalapeño chicken, all the lomeins, hot n sour soup and pretty much everything. The super crispy spring rolls are awesome. Decided to give Chef King a try for the first time since moving to Louisville. I had been going to an 'Asian Fusion' place in the area, mainly for their Pad Thai & Sushi. I ordered Sesame Chicken with fried rice and my friend had Sweet & Sour Pork with steamed rice. Portions were generous and flavors as expected. Lunch included Soup, a Wonton and an Eggroll. This place is amazing. A portion of meat will include a great portion of fried or white rice. I typically shy away from Chinese takeout due to their smaller portions but here the portions feed two. Food was hot and fresh. I was told to wait 15 minutes but I cannot regret waiting. The price is also very good. I'd recommend the Orange Chicken, and Sesame Chicken along with their house special fried rice. Although the lady that received us did not dominate English, it wasn't a difficult process. Okay, tried them for lunch this time. I ordered sweet & sour shrimp. Granted I had just had dental work done, but even without that the pieces of shrimp are so big you have to cut into them to eat it. I didn't get enough sauce (which is separate) for all those shrimp, and the batter was REALLY thick, not overcooked but almost. Soup was the same, rice was the same, egg roll was YUMMY, and I still had to pay for crispy noodles. This time they almost gave me a Pepsi instead of my noodles. It's a small mom and pop shop. I think it's family run. The family is really nice and friendly. Their food is really delicious, especially the Mongolian beef. The beef is so tender and perfectly cooked. The prices are also very reasonable. You definitely get a lot for your money. They give you a pretty big portion. They don't cheap out on the meat. We have been wanting to try this place for a while, but every time we went they were closed. We finally got to try it out today, and oh my word it was worth the wait!!! Everything is made to order so it was all fresh and hot. I got the seseme chicken lunch special, very tasty with just a hint of spice to it, super flavorful. I don't typically like egg rolls but the one I got with my lunch was really good. The crab cheese wontons were some of the best I've ever had!!! All and all my family was very satisfied with all the food we got today. We look forward to going again and trying some other items on their menu. The fact that it has seating at all is a miracle! I generally do the chicken and snow peas lunch special. You can get it with crab cheese wontons or egg rolls or one of each. I can't believe the reviews here. We tried this place and found the food just downright horrible. It's overpriced as well. The egg rolls are okay but nothing special. Crab cheese fried wontons are good. The foil wrapped chicken was inedible. The chicken texture was like slime and the food was so over loaded with soy that you would need to be a deep sea bass to be able to handle the saltiness. The orange flavored beef was like a hollow shell of what was once some sort of meat. It was orange flavor. That was about the only thing going for it. The chicken curry was bland in flavor and hot in heat. The texture of the chicken reminded my wife and I of road kill. Our children found the special friend rice inoffensive. Though I really like Tu Lein's downtown and I feel like I am cheating on them right now, I happen to really like this place as well. Really I am not an adventurous person when it comes to Chinese food, so I always stick with my favorite Sesame Chicken. Now especially in California that can be hit or miss, but at this place... it is a HIT! They are one of the only places I have ever seen that pan fries (or maybe it's a wok) the chicken, which gives it this slightly crunchy texture. Ohhh... yummy! Plus this guy has pictures all over his restaurant with people like Bill Owens, now there is the entire reason to go there... he's met Bill Owens! While I don't particularly like Bill Owens that much, I can respect anyone who blows up a picture of themselves shaking hands with a politician and places it in plain view of all their patrons. This is purely for the sake of potential diners... Popped in here for a quick dinner, ordered some pork chow mein. Expected moderately typical takeout, food was ready in 15 minutes for $10 and took it home. Opened it up and the pork was raw. Not undercooked. Raw, like never hit the pan pink and shiny. I've honestly never seen anything like that before. Called, then went back in. Nice enough kid at the counter told me it was cooked, then offered another. When I explained that raw pork had serious health implications, he shrugged and offered me a refund, which I took, so that was something. I'm in utter disbelief that any dish could go out like that. Now, I'm not here to try to ruin a business or anything like that. I believe it was a mistake, but it's a mistake that could get someone very sick. No apologies or anything was offered, and that's fine. But, this being a peer review site, I'd strongly advise you take a very close look at your food if you order from here. read more

The chicken isn't cooked, the beef if so gross and to top it off when I called the gal said well our chicken is frozen and that they couldn't do anything. Having read other posters, I expected more. All of the food was soggy and tasted as though it had sat in oil. It doesn't help that they were extremely slow. When I called in my order they said it would be 20 min. I showed up in 25 and waited an additional 10 min in the store for someone to talk to acknowledge my presence (there were only 2 of us in the tiny restaurant, and the other person was sitting at a table waiting on their food as well). I understand the Chinese food isn't the healthiest choice and I know it will have oil, but this was just beyond disgusting and flavorless. Here is a breakdown of what we ordered: Pork Fried Rice: bland, the pork was chewy, the rice had a coating of oil on it Crab Cheese Wontons: limp, oily, stuffed with too much cream cheese and a speck of crab. Here you expect it to be fried, but not dripping with oil. It had no crispness what so ever. Teriyaki Beef on Stick: rubbery and oily, barley seasoned Wonton Soup: watered down Lo Mein, chicken: This was decent. The noodles were a bit oily but not as bad as the rice. It was on the bland side though. The chicken in it was subpar and the overall seasoning on this was bland. So disappointing. I will never try this place again. If you are considering this place, drive the 5 minutes more to pick up at Double Happy. read more
