The restaurant has been in north Boulder for many years. Their space had been on street front in ground level of the old hospital and medical offices parking garage. The difficulties with are in my previous reviews. Now much of the facility has been torn down and the ongoing construction of the space to be city staff offices and the bigger space to be affordable housing had become impractical to use or eat at the restaurant. The noise was deafening. In January they moved to a food court on the Hill. This is a lower level of a building with other tenants. There are about 6 food kitchens and each time I have been here this summer and fall, this is the busiest at lunch. Since the seating is communal there is always space and it is clean. The staff here have been really nice. If I'm preparing a meal at home or supplementing leftovers, I have stopped by to get a fave vegetable, baby bok choy, steamed and seasoned and at an affordable side dish price. Today my husband and I walked down for lunch and ordered the Tuesday special street crepes some of the owners have continued from the long gone first owners from Beijing. As with other succeeding owners, they too have continued to use lettuce rather than the bok choy in the crepe. It also has some ham, scallions and crispy wonton bits and a nice spread of hoisin. It is topped with a sprinkle of black sesame seeds that I love. Another difference from the original is that the ingredients of the crepe itself are not well mixed together so many large patches of separate egg white and yolk makes it harder to hold together and not as pretty. But it tastes just fine but original years ago was addicting. I will continue to come here try more of the food from the current owner. I love beef noodles and have 2 other places I can get a good version but this is the most walkable for me. They do very nice prep for takeout which is good too. At lunch it is busy with CU affiliated students, staff and faculty alike. Every item I have had at Flower Pepper is hand made and prepared for the customer. read more

This place is outrageously delicious! The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. The food was outstanding. If I could come here every day I totally would. They also consisted my weird wheat noodle issue and made my soup with rice noodles. I had Taiwanese beef soup with bok choy & rice noodles. The Tiger Food salad is a heavenly combo of julienned cucumber, jalapeño, scallions, and cilantro in savory sauce. Yummmmm. Don't sleep on this place! Come visit! This gem deserves all the love. As you enter the establishment, you face the counter first and order your meal. Afterwards, you pick a seat in a narrow hallway with the tables on the right side all facing Broadway street. Food came out after 5-10 minutes. The Seaweed salad was good. Both the Taiwanese Braised beef noodles and the DanDan noodles were served piping hot. Overall, food was not bad. Amazing Food. Probably one of the most authentic ones here in Boulder. I moved recently to Boulder and this is one of my favorites in the area. Every single dish has a distinct flavor. Overall: Quick no-frills, snack-sized meals. More authentic than most of the Asian restaurants in the area with a variety of dish styles. I'd return for the Beijing zhajiang noodles. Also, they're a mom & pop's shop who do homecooking so they will not have typical Americanized Chinese takeout food. Space: Small with minimal seats in a long and narrow seating area. Very casual. Service: Fast, polite and limited interaction. Price: Reasonable considering their location. Food: Decent selection. Depending on how much you eat, a single dish here is a light meal and may not be enough for a full meal. I probably needed to order an appetizer to be full. -Beijing Zhajiang noodles - Loved this. Not sure if they made the bean sauce themselves but I usually enjoy this dish in general. The fresh, crunchy veggies balanced out the savory bean sauce. -Taiwanese beef noodle soup - Savory but not as rich as I'm used to. My family is Taiwanese and I'm used to a darker broth. Not much meat with about 4-5 small pieces of beef. -Dan Dan noodles - the broth looked and tasted similar to the Taiwanese beef noodle soup except it had chili oil and ground pork and no carrots. Not much meat with a sprinkle of it on one side of the bowl. -Chinese sparerib noodles - Satisfying but not a standout. It tastes similar to the beef noodle and dandan noodle soups I've tried and maybe with some other spice I can't identify. Drinks: Bottled and canned drink options in a fridge near the register. enjoyed my meal here and would say they probably are more authentic than most Chinese restaurants around here. I say this based off the flavors and how unique they were. I had the the smaller wonton soup, the bok choy side, and the potstickers. I thought everything tasted really good! I also love the small restaurant vibe they have too! Made for a cool experience. The staff was friendly too. Dining in is more for the solo diner, but for family and friends, to go would be a great option. I would say give them a try if you're looking for a more unique experience and some different flavor profiles than you're used to! read more

About us: it says the founder Jeff G is from Shandong but no longer lives in Boulder and the new owner grew up in Beijing. The menu has lots of offering but it definitely has that authentic taste of a northern cruising consist of hearty noodles and dumplings. Here's my top 3 recommendations that I would start with: 台式牛肉面 Taiwanese Braised Beef Noodles - it's the top thing listed on their menu. It's best served dine in on a cold day. Not sure why beef noodle soup is from Taiwan? 小笼包 Xiaolong Bao Soup Dumplings - this was probably the best I've had in the US comparable to Din Tai Fung (Taiwanese chain with locations on the west coast). 烤鸭卷 Peking Duck Rolls - for anyone who have visited Beijing, a banquet dinner always I say always consist of crispy duck skin carved in front of you served on a soft bun. *duck rolls cost $6 here and it tasted equally delicious to the fancy $600 duck banquet CCP dinners. The price is very fair here considering I have a lowly middle class budget from Denver. I will say that my only complaint is the price, it is very expensive for how little duck they add to the soup. I'm honestly disappointed to make this review but my first time ordering take out from this place and the food was not nearly authentic. The noodles and broth came in separate containers and the noodles were over cooked and soft with no chew. The menu described it as fresh noodles but it was definitely pre packaged noodles that you boil. Their menu descriptions are very misleading as it also said that their beef were big chunks in rich broth that is spicy. Popped in after a very fun hike through the mountains. Place is away from the pearl street craziness so finding free parking was easy, at least during the weekend. Place is very small with only two tables and some side by side window seating. We grabbed the veg Dan Dan noodles and the tofu mapo rice. Asked for some extra heat but wasn't too much. The noodles were a bit oily but had a great taste. Crispy tofu added some good texture. Mapo rice had a thick sauce that provided great umami. The tofu was plain and I would have preferred some sear. First of all, it's not often you come across a restaurant with authentic Chinese food. Most just have that orange chicken BS. If that's your thing, go somewhere else. This place is the real deal. The food is fantastic. I come here all the time for the Taiwanese braised pork belly over rice. My second favorite is the duck noodles when I want to switch it up. Takeout is ready usually in 5-10 mins. Great service and clean interior. Smaller restaurant so seating may be limited if you have a larger group. read more

Flower Pepper has long been one of my all-time favorite restaurants in Boulder. Kind of a hole in the wall. My best friend and I used to go here pretty much every Saturday for months at a time. Friendly staff, DELICIOUS Chinese (although the food is admittedly better when you eat in person vs. take-out), and just a lovely local business to go and support. Every time we go, we get the xiao long bao (soup dumplings) (so so drool worthy), and are also a fan of the braised beef noodles and taiwanese stewed pork belly over rice. The owners have a wide variety of dishes from various regions, much preferable to your traditional Chinese American and honestly better than Zoe Ma Ma (although they're tasty too). It's always fun to try out new dishes here. Great date night idea, very intimate seating but not too fancy, you can stop by sweet cow for a post dinner treat or take your food nearby to North Boulder Park for a picnic. Discovering that there was an authentic tasting Chinese restaurant really made my day. Going here, I was expecting a fusion style menu, but was greeted with very traditional and delicious food. I ordered the Mapo Tofu and it was like my grandmothers. The use of spices were a bit overwhelming at times, but it went well with the taste of Tofu as Tofu is not a very exciting item. My friends ordered the Dandan noodle soup and enjoyed it, and they had never had it before. The service was also top notch! The only thing I would add is that when indoor seating opens up, it is very limited so big groups may struggle. read more

Decided to try out a new place on our last trip out to Boulder and we were pleasantly surprised! First impression: man, this place is tiny! It's essentially a hallway that they put seating in, and at the end of the hallway is a kitchen. I ordered the Sour and Spicy Sweet Potato Noodles and hubby ordered the Wonton Noodle Soup. When the food came out, we were both surprised at the size of our bowls -- decent amount of food for the price. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals, and we were gifted a side of cucumbers from the nice lady to accompany our noodles. Noodles in both dishes were well done. Soups were delicious. Just the right amount of spice in each dish. Wontons were good. I like that they tell you what province each dish represents as the styles of Chinese food vary so much. I would warn anyone with a peanut allergy to be extremely cautious here! There is generous peanut usage here which I love, but may be important to know for some! From this compact Mom & Pop kitchen in Boulder comes some of the most deliciously delightful food I've found anywhere in the USA! The chicken noodle soup is simple and sublime, perfectly seasoned and with just enough richness that you may find it difficult to stop until it's gone. The pork and the chicken dumplings are as good or better than anywhere I've had on either coast, so tasty and of perfect consistency. The chicken dumplings with shiitake mushrooms dipped in the savory, tangy house sauce could easily be a meal of themselves. The richer, more robust pork dumplings might slow you down a bit more - super tasty! Also, no issue at all with online ordering, even when busy the good folks here seem to get the dishes ready to go under 30 minutes.
