Private dining space... too cute
Laura F.

Everything you're expecting from a bierhaus that has been around for 50 years, plus an extensive collection of WWII models and figures. Fantastic schnitzel and beer. Bring cash if you can since they do a 3% surcharge on credit cards and also seem to get a bit befuddled when technology doesn't work...

Stopped into Chef Klaus' Bier Stube and had such a great meal! The schnitzel was fantastic, tender, and full of flavor. You can tell they really care about quality and tradition here. The atmosphere is warm, cozy, and has that classic German charm that makes you want to stay awhile. The only downside for me was the charge for sharing plates. The portions are generous, easily enough to split, so it's a bit disappointing to be charged extra just for sharing on top of the pricing already being a bit steeper for German food. Other than that, everything was wonderful. Great food, friendly service, and an authentic, welcoming vibe. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

Full size bear!

Oh. My. GOODNESS!! If you want to be immersed in all things Germanic, this is the place for you. I can't even begin to describe the myriad collection/decorations in here. Hummel figurines, German army action figures, model WW2 airplanes, rifles, stuffed bears, rams, foxes, goat, pheasants, cuckoo clocks, German army model tanks, cars, trains, antler chandeliers, beer steins, more antlers. I mean, wow. Also 4.little private niches for parties of 2. And an alpenhorn. And band on week ends. Beer: all draft are German. Big selection. Wine: good selection. Food: reg Ameican stuff (If you MUST!), burgers, salads, fish, pasta; but that's not why you come here. It's for the belly busting German food. Included with dinner, gratis were breads, flavored butters, crudites, liverwurst. Nice surprise! Dinners include soup or salad, 2 sides & whopping portions. Our group of 4 had goulash soup, liver dumpling soup, 2 salads; chicken schnitzel, Kassler ripchen, Jagerschnitzel, schnitzel a la Holstein. Sides of spaetzle, dumpling, red cabbage, veg. Black Forest cake for dessert. Quality was VERY good. Very large portions! Service was attentive & thoughtful, friendly but not intrusive. Parking is free & plentiful. Easy to find, in a strip mall, right off Rt 45, 5 mins south of I-80. Highly recommend.

I have past this staple restaurant for over 17 years on LaGrange Ave without stopping by, finally made the decision and try things out! If you order a dinner meal, you will get a very nice bread platter with yummy homemade butter, dark bread, liver pate (actually pretty good), and onions/carrots/celery. The portions won't let you leave hungry! The ambiance is a little difficult to describe in a few words, but let's just say it's very German and World War II focused! The music is very Oktoberfest/German party and will feature live music and singalongs! Saw a ton of repeat customers that the staff knew on a first name basis. Will the bartender is great! Believe he is there on the weekends! I will be back to try more of the rather large menu they have!

This German restaurant is very unassuming because it is located on a strip. This place is truly a hidden gem! My son wanted to eat German food and chose this place to celebrate his birthday. I am glad we came here because the food is fantastic! Someone from their staff took a little break outside and as we walked up, he welcomed us and opened the door for us. He was very pleasant! We came during the Super Bowl, so it was not crowded, and they had the game on. The place has a lot of German decor. My son wanted to sit in a booth, and as we were getting ready to sit down, our waiter, Michael, came and asked if wanted to switch to a table. We decided to take him up on his suggestion and we are so glad we did because the amount of food that came out would not have been big enough to fit all the plates. They have an extensive beer menu, a dessert menu, Sunday Special menu, and their regular menu. Michael was an awesome waiter. He is very friendly and gave his suggestions/recommendations when it came to choosing the sides for our entrees. He also came back often to check in and see how we were doing. My husband had a Sunday Special: a half slab of baby back ribs, with red cabbage and mashed sweet potatoes, which I did not take a photo of. I also had a Sunday special: the walleye pike with green beans and potato casserole and my son had the wurst schnitzel with green beans and potato casserole. Everything was delicious and the portions are huge. We were too stuffed for dessert, but, we will definitely be going back and hopefully next time, we will have room for dessert! If you are in the area and feel like having good German food, I highly recommend giving this place a try.

The curry wurst was the bomb but needed more sauce. The sauce was heavenly though. The potato pancakes great and flavorful. The cabbage rolls tasty. The liver soup not my favorite only because it had a liver taste--which if you like, then you'll like it. The saurkraut and purple cabbage the best Ive ever tasted and worth getting. The spetzel so-so, not much flavor. Son liked it though. The bread dumplings ok. More like white bread. The big pork shank that is the prize-it was good but not as stellar as we thought it would be. And we did make sure to order it crispy like it said to and it wasn't. Looked like it was a little browned but even my young son said the fat isn't rendered. I think it would have been a lot better if it had been crispy like in other pictures on here. Disappointed. It's like $35. Not cheap. The beef with sauce (sauerbraten) was good, the sauce great, the beef ok. The special that was going on, the beef roulade. Nobody liked it at all. The stuff just didn't taste good together in it. Overall, it was a good experience. The waitress Rosie was amazing, most of the food was great to awesome. The ambiance was German and cozy. Our favorites: the curry wurst sauce, the saurkraut and red cabbage and the stuffed cabbage rolls.

As a German I had to try it. The potato pancakes were a good start, tasted like mom used to make. The Platter had a lot of food. I don't know what region this place is from, the sauerkraut and Blaukraut were not Bavarian, the Spätzle felt ready made and not home made. The Bratwurst was too fine for me, I'm thinking north German. The strudel was good tho. The service was fantastic! From host to server they took care of me and made sure I wanted for nothing, so I can't complain there. Decor wise this looks like what you'd imagine a German restaurant looking like in the US. Lots of banners advertising beer and German flags hanging on the walls with a collection of steins everywhere you look. Overall it's not "authentic" for me, but the food tasted good and the service was exceptional.

Finding good German food that hasn't been Americanized is difficult and few places actually serve German cuisine like it is in Germany with their high food quality over there. So I ordered the daily special that was Jägerschnitzel (hunter's schnizel/breaded pork tenderloin with a mushroom gravy or sauce) and for an appetizer I ordered jalapeño poppers along with the authentic German goulash soup and pumpernickel bread were very good. The Jägerschnitzel sauce that is a mushroom sauce was a little unique but very good. I especially liked the spatzle noodles and the red cabbage (rotkohl) and it's just like I would get in Germany so I loved both side dishes a lot. Cool, old-timey feel to the restaurant and the service is impeccable as well. I left full and was sorry I didn't have room for the strudel they make in house, maybe next time!

Update 2026 - Oktoberfest at Schnitzel Platz…read more It's official. Celebrating Oktoberfest at Schnitzel Platz has become a tradition for us. Live music, dancing, interactive fun, flowing beer, and hearty German food, honestly, who argues with that combination? The place transforms into one big cheerful party where strangers toast like old friends and nobody leaves quietly. This year was extra special because it was my sister's, from Buenos Aires, first time experiencing the festivities , and she absolutely loved it. She left with a full belly and a few loud, happy memories that will probably resurface every time she hears an accordion. Service is always upbeat and fun, keeping pace with the festivities. Our server was very attentive and was able to answer all our questions we had about the menu. She definitely helped us decide on what to order. The menu is extensive with so many different kinds of Schnitzel to choose from along with a variety of entrees like pork shank and pork chops. We first started with the sauerkraut balls as an appetizer. These deep fried sauerkraut and smoked ham balls were served with a honey mustard like dipping sauce. Absolutely a must try. We also ordered a half order of the German potatoes pancakes and they were the best I've ever had. So light and crispy and we ordered a side of sour cream and apple sauce to complement the pancakes for extra up charge. For our entrees I went with the pork chop zingara. It was a healthy portion of breaded chops topped with mushrooms and tomatoes with ham. We chose the green beans and bread gravy as the sides. Absolutely delicious and plenty to take home as well. The also ordered the Deutsche Haus Platter - Breaded pork schnitzel, frikadelle (German chopped steak), assorted sausages. Served with home fries, red cabbage, and sauerkraut. You can substitute the sides if you want but kept our order as is and so glad we did. The home fries were really good. The entree was a great way to try a little of everything so I know exactly what I'll want to try the next time I come which I home will be in the near future. All the entrees come with soup or salad. We got the soups : the goulash and liver dumpling soup. The goulash had a kick from the paprika but it was very hearty. I am not a fan of liver but it was good too and the broth was rich. Schnitzel Platz offers great hearty and comfort German food with a very fun atmosphere filled with live music. Nice selection of German beers on tap too. The service was also great.

First thing I noticed was that the restaurant was unusually empty on a Saturday night, we were the only ones there. No problem because we have been to other empty restaurants before but the food was good. Second thing I noticed was that we can hear the microwave turn on frequently and the sound is disturbingly obvious. We ordered apple pancakes, Renate's sampler platter, cheesy spaetzle, and Kleiner haxen. We got the liver dumpling soup with each of our entrees. Most of it was bad but I'll talk about the good first. Complimentary bread was fine, it tasted like pretzel. It was soft and not too salty. Liver dumpling soup was hearty and the meat was tender. Broth was good. The brat was fine, tender and flavorful. Mashed potatoes were fine. Here comes the bad. Apple pancakes were too crunchy like reheated. It's not soft like regular pancakes. Not a lot of apples inside. The hammock was still frozen which was why it was so difficult to cut. I've had hock before and if it's made fresh, it'll cut easily. This one was frozen solid in the middle. We can hear them putting it back in the microwave. We took it home to reheat it in the oven. The sampler platter was mostly terrible. The schnitzel didn't even look like one (I've had it many times at other German restaurants). The sauerbraten and the gulasch bowl both had tough meats. You'll be chewing on this for like forever. The cheesy spaetzle they actually forgot but reheated it when I inquired about my order. Definitely wasn't fresh. It was unflavored. The owners did give us the cheesy spaetzle for free and 20% of the hock order. However, I think they should have given us the entire order of hock for free or 75% off. After all, it wasn't even cooked fresh and was still frozen in the middle. The husband was very apologetic but yeah apologies couldn't save this horrendous experience. I do not recommend coming here. If you do come, eat at your own risk.
