Stopped into Chef Klaus' Bier Stube and had such a great meal! The schnitzel was fantastic, tender, and full of flavor. You can tell they really care about quality and tradition here. I have past this staple restaurant for over 17 years on LaGrange Ave without stopping by, finally made the decision and try things out! If you order a dinner meal, you will get a very nice bread platter with yummy homemade butter, dark bread, liver pate (actually pretty good), and onions/carrots/celery. The portions won't let you leave hungry! The ambiance is a little difficult to describe in a few words, but let's just say it's very German and World War II focused! This German restaurant is very unassuming because it is located on a strip. This place is truly a hidden gem! My son wanted to eat German food and chose this place to celebrate his birthday. I am glad we came here because the food is fantastic! Someone from their staff took a little break outside and as we walked up, he welcomed us and opened the door for us. He was very pleasant! We came during the Super Bowl, so it was not crowded, and they had the game on. The place has a lot of German decor. My son wanted to sit in a booth, and as we were getting ready to sit down, our waiter, Michael, came and asked if wanted to switch to a table. We decided to take him up on his suggestion and we are so glad we did because the amount of food that came out would not have been big enough to fit all the plates. They have an extensive beer menu, a dessert menu, Sunday Special menu, and their regular menu. Michael was an awesome waiter. He is very friendly and gave his suggestions/recommendations when it came to choosing the sides for our entrees. He also came back often to check in and see how we were doing. My husband had a Sunday Special: a half slab of baby back ribs, with red cabbage and mashed sweet potatoes, which I did not take a photo of. I also had a Sunday special: the walleye pike with green beans and potato casserole and my son had the wurst schnitzel with green beans and potato casserole. Everything was delicious and the portions are huge. We were too stuffed for dessert, but, we will definitely be going back and hopefully next time, we will have room for dessert! The food is German, so lots of vinegar. I had the roulade, which was good, but the neat was extremely dry, even though there was a sauce. The cabbage was so sour that I couldn't eat it, but the baked sweet potato was wonderful. Mario was my server and he was so polite and considerate. He's actually the reason I gave this place 4 stars. The hostess at tge front was the coldest person I've encountered. She didn't ask if I had a preference for my seating, and basically just dropped the menus he on the table. The 2 hostesses just took our end table, despite us saying we were waiting for a few friends. They flung my friend's purse. The restaurant is in a strip mall tucked away yet once inside you feel like you're at a lodge. Chock full of German kitsch you can't possibly see it all in one trip! Our family has been going to this restaurant for 30+ years (including the original location). This will be our last. Visited tonight for a very special birthday. Was told (after the fact ) we could only order 4 large sides for the table instead of two individual sides per person because it was Oktoberfest. This was not advertised when making the reservation or after sitting down and pondering the menu. At $30+ a plate this is very upsetting and totally disregards the customer. There was a member in our party of 6 that had dietary restrictions and was not able to order separate sides. After speaking with the hostess, we were able to request two individual sides for him. When the bill came, an additional $10 was added for the individual sides. We were also told that the potatoes we ordered were an up charge. The waiter took that charge off after we questioned it because we were never told that selection would be extra. On top of it all, we did not share the birthday cake we bought because we were told there would be a $3.50 plating fee per person! read more

Great oldskool German place. If you ever ate at the long-gone Brauhouse in Chicago's Lincoln Square back in the day you know more or less what to expect here. I had Jaegershnitzel with sides of red cabbage and potato pancakes, a bowl of liver dumpling sour and a liter of a schwarzbier they had on tap. The food was all well-prepared and tasty. I ate everything and walked out of there feeling like I might explode... I didn't want to waste food or bring it home.
