Edelweiss was a great German restaurant. My husband and I both order the Wienerschnitzel with spaetzle and the German potatoes. This came with a cup of split pea soup. We started with an enormous pretzel with yummy cheese and mustard dips. All of the food was as absolutely delicious and nice big portions. I think we could have shared one plate but maybe next time. We were too full to get one of their very appealing desserts. We visited this restaurant after a wake nearby and enjoyed the bar atmosphere and pub grub. The Alpine Thunder band were playing on Sunday and added to a festive atmosphere. The good: The pretzel was amazing, hot and buttery, salty and soft. It's presented on a hanging wire and was at least two feet high. The cheese curds were light and cheesy and beers were everything you'd expect from a German restaurant (including a 2 liter boot of Spaten). People we were with enjoyed the cabbage soup and potato pancakes. The not so good: The jaegerschnizel pork meal was not good, it was hard and unflavorful (I've been to Oktoberfest in Munich where they fed 3000 people and it tasted better). The spaezel and red cabbage were good sides but a bit on the small side. We sat in the bar and service was fine, a bit slow but friendly. Was looking for German food again when I came to Chicago for a work trip. I already tried the one in the loop so I ventured out to this place. The reviews advertised authentic German food. As a German I had to try it. The potato pancakes were a good start, tasted like mom used to make. The Platter had a lot of food. I don't know what region this place is from, the sauerkraut and Blaukraut were not Bavarian, the Spätzle felt ready made and not home made. The Bratwurst was too fine for me, I'm thinking north German. The strudel was good tho. The service was fantastic! From host to server they took care of me and made sure I wanted for nothing, so I can't complain there. Decor wise this looks like what you'd imagine a German restaurant looking like in the US. Lots of banners advertising beer and German flags hanging on the walls with a collection of steins everywhere you look. Hard to say enough good things about this restaurant. The vibe was fantastic. Everything about it was authentic, from the decor to the German band playing traditional Biergarten music. And when we ordered food that didn't disappoint either. I had the traditional Wiener schnitzel, my aunt had the pork knuckle (schweinshaxe) and my wife had the meatloaf. Everything was so good that we had to share so we could each get a little taste of each other's dishes. We topped the meal off with an Apfel strudel for dessert which was incredible. The Staff here at Edelweiss Restaurant is dressed up nicely in Bavarian, Black-Forest, Rhineland, and Saxon-German outfits, like Lederhosen, Dirndls, and other Disneyland-style Costumes, which makes things extra fun, especially when the accordion starts being played in an "Um-Pah" way. At Christmas time (Weinachten), the staff at Edelweiss Restaurant decks the entire places out like a Christmas Market (Weinachtmacht) in Munich. It is Delightful. I have eaten here many times, over numerous decades. It is a 5 minute drive from the cemetery where my entire family is buried. Oktoberfest 2025 begins on Saturday Sep. 6 and goes until Sunday Nov. 2 (it is a lot of fun if you like beer and live traditional German songs. I almost always order one or more of the following: Steak Tartar (as a starter), followed by Leberknodel Soupe (liver dumpling soup), and then either the Bavarian Pork Shank, or the Sauerbraten, or the Wiener Schnitzel (a breaded & fried veal cutlet that's as big and pounded flat as a large pancake) as my main. It's a very beautiful place and you can feel like you're at home in Germany. You have big pretzels at the table hanging on a piece of metal and you have lots of huge side dishes. You can enjoy to pick from. You can try the edelweiss sampler which has beef, sausage, pork loin, red, cabbage, sauerkraut, breaded chicken, which is lightly breaded and very good btw, spaetzle which is flour and egg and milk and water that comes out like it's small cut spaghetti pieces. The red cabbage and sauerkraut were very flavorful. The wait staff Jose was very nice and friendly. They have an outdoor beer garden for when the weather is nice and there is a free parking lot. Went to The Edelweiss restaurant yesterday to join a number of friends, friends I actually met at Edelweiss over the last 30 years to watch the superbowl. There's nothing better than enjoying yourself with good friends, good German beer and good food. Matt the master chef and manager was very gracious and put out a nice sampling of food in appreciation of all of the customers who have supported Edelweiss for years. We enjoyed mini beef sandwiches, meatballs, and chili, all which were out of this world delicious. Edelweiss does catering and special events too. I'm planning on having a party there in the near future and was looking for a catering package, it was nice to try the different items prior to the party that Edelweiss has to offer. I haven't tried a lot of German food but now I will be because Edelweiss has convinced me! You can't miss the restaurant! It's got this German cottage look. The Bavarian pretzel was sooo good! I'd come back for that alone! It was giant and the beer cheese was beering for sure! If you love beer cheese, then you've found your match! We also did the sausage sampler. Not bad. I like the cheese knackwurst the most. I also really enjoyed the live entertainment. The singers/musicians had a set list and they also came out and had people blow into a German horn and made a fun time out it. The decor definitely reminded me of tradition Germany. For entrees, we did the edelweiss platter and hackbraten (German meatloaf). If this is your first time here, then the idolize platter is definitely the way to go because you try a lot of their popular items and you get a lot of common German sides, too. Went to this neighborhood classic to celebrate a birthday and Edelweiss did not disappoint. We went on a Saturday during Octoberfest so they provided live music. The vocalist had a gorgeous voice and played the accordion with fast and nimble fingers! Overall a very lively performance with audience participation appreciated! Elizabeth was our waitress and brought our appetizers of cheese curds, giant pretzel and sausage sampler which was delicious. We were also served piping hot bowls of creamy mushroom soup that were so tasty! My main entree of wienershnitzle Ala Holstein was hearty and had a side of buttery spatzle and pickled red beets that paired lovely with the crispness of the shintzle. Another from our party ordered the gravy laden sauerbraten which was another standout classic! Dont miss the traditional dish of Bayerische Schweinshaxe especially if you are hankering for 3 pounds of roasted pork!! The flight of beers was a neat way to sample a few different beers! We absolutely had the best time possible and created a lifetime of memories. Everyone was so happy trying out different German beers but the ultimate winner was Hacker Pschorr. We came in on a weekend for the oompah music and were very pleased with all the crowd interaction! And oh my god the food was so so delicious. I ordered the meatloaf which I am still dreaming of. Walking in the door I was greated by a bat/Stube/Kneipe atmosphere that was right out of Germany. We had the amazing schnitzels as our mains. I tried the Leberknödelsuppe: the Knödle was great but the broth was salty. The Spätzle I had as a side were served plain, no butter even, so a bit bland. The Apfelstrudle was delicious. Loved our dining experience here! Quiet Thursday, but the atmosphere makes you feel like you're dining in Munich for sure. We started with the sausage sampler as an appetizer and the combination of horseradish, sauerkraut, red cabbage, and mustard was a great start. A very good portion for 2, definitely good for 2-3. I had the beef stroganoff which was good too. All entrees come with a soup of the day which was a nice warm treat. My husband had the currywurst which was good. A little more charred for the brat, but overall was good. We finished off with apfelstrudel which was the perfect touch. Their cake pieces also looked good and a large portion easy to share. Early hour weekend dinner. Familiar with the tradition of German style restaurants in this metro city...most now just a memory. Edelweiss has somehow survived or at least maintains its identification where either the steady patrons have moved away from the 'German neighborhoods' in Chicago or the businesses have folded as the owner families opted to do something. The chef, on this Sunday eve, is sugar-centric. The sauerkraut was not just sweet, which it shouldn't be, but had been sweetened. The sauerbraten gravy was not tangy sauerkraut but also had been sugared-up. Red cabbage, the same. Disappointed especially at the elevated prices. A more authentic Deutsch option exists in at the more eastern addresses on the same Irving Park Road (in North Center area) of Chicago. Should have been better. read more

Came here for the first time in a few years with a bunch of friends, and it was such a wonderful experience. We came for my friend's birthday and everyone enjoyed the experience, food, and fun atmosphere. We came a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday evening, and we had the most wonderful waitress. She was friendly and constantly checked in on us. As a table of 7 people, for an appetizer, we ordered two Bavarian pretzels ($12 each). These were perfectly cooked and were HUGE. They came with Stella Artois cheese dip and a sweet and spicy honey mustard sauce that tasted like horseradish. I liked both dips but LOVED the honey mustard one. In all honesty, though, I ate the pretzel more on its own without dips because the dough was amazing on its own. My husband and I both ended up ordering fish dishes for our entrees, and we were able to try each other's. We loved both of them. I ordered the Sauteed Cod ($26). This came with onions, cherry tomatoes (which I excluded), and sherry wine butter sauce. The cod was delicious and cooked perfectly. The meal was so light in a good way! With this meal, I was able to choose two sides, and I chose to order 2 sides of the vegetable of the day. This happened to be brussel sprouts and they were seasoned and sauteed well. My husband ordered the Blackened Salmon ($29). The two sides he chose were the sauerkraut (which he ignorantly ordered and hated since he never had sauerkraut before) and a cucumber salad. He loved all of his food and I enjoyed his salmon, as well. I would order the salmon next time because although I thought my meal was delicious, I loved the seasoned salmon a little more. After all, it had a great crust. Other than the service and food, I love this place because it's authentic German food and they even have authentic entertainment. The entire time we were there, we were blessed with two gentlemen musicians playing accordions and horns. They even sang Happy Birthday to those who had birthdays! I had not been here in five years so I did not now what to expect and am so happy I have been back to eat there twice this month just to make sure I am not dreaming it was as good as it was. I'm having feelings because I really wanted Edelweiss to have more than three stars but I think I'm tainted having been to Germany and the German history of the San Antonio, TX area which we lived for a number of years. The establishment is decorated very authentically and it is a very large space. The staff is very friendly but isn't super attentive unless you're with a party bigger than 2. I noticed servers attending and passing by our table numerous times and kept going back to other tables bigger than ours. The cheese curds for an appetizer were good and plentiful. The ham and cheese pretzel panini was decent and also a great portion size. My husband got the cheesy spatzle and it was alright but lacked much flavor. We had to "spice" it up once we got home. I do want to return because I think there are other menu items that might be better. Great German environment and good menu but better service and more flavorful food might be needed. read more

Absolutely loved it here! The ambiance was everything I'd hoped it would be. It's rustic, authentic German charm exuded in every detail. Staff is very warm and engaging. The food was all so good. We had the pretzel obviously that is just heaven hanging from a hook. My husband and I then made sure to order a little of everything so we got the combination platters with Sauerbraten, Chicken Schnitzel, Bratwurst and Roast Pork Loin served with German fries, red cabbage, sauerkraut and spatzle. I can't rave enough about how yummy and comforting this food was. The steins of beer are an absolute must. Then join the crowd in singing, chanting and having an overall party. We ordered the potato pancakes The gf ordered the schnitzel sandwich, she said it was great...but she also likes liver so take that with a grain of salt. I ordered the beef stroganoff. I thought it had pretty good flavor, but the noodles were overcooked a bit. Not to the point that it was ruined but it could have been better. Had to deduct one star for that.
