I have always loved this neighborhood mom and pop restaurant. I had not been in for quite some time. I love the food and the service! However, today, I am not loving $5 for soft drinks and ice tea. Liberally speaking, we all know a fountain drink cost less than .50 a serving. This, along with up charges for using a debit card which is like cash is just the raping of the restaurant consumer. A hidden gem in mid-city. The poboys are amazing, stuffed with ingredients. We enjoyed the eggplant Parmesan poboy and the shrimp poboy- both were delicious. We just left Liuzza's and OMGosh we are uncomfortably full! This was one of our favorite restaurants in days gone by but we haven't been there in a while. Since we had Saenger tickets, we wanted to have a quick dinner before the show. I was a little worried when there were only a couple of people in the bar. No need to worry though. I was in the mood for some good ole home cooking and my chicken didn't disappoint! It was hot out of the pan and I had to be careful not to burn my mouth. We had forgotten about this restaurant. We went in for lunch and we were not disappointed. We went right at noon and it was not crazy busy for which we were happy. We started with the onion rings. They were homemade and plentiful and delicious. We split a bowl of gumbo and, while it was not the best i had ever had, it was great. I ordered the fried oyster and remoulade salad and my husband ordered the chicken parmesan with pasta. Both were amazing. The oysters on my salad were crispy and large and the dressing highlighted the oysters so well. His chicken parmesan was one of the best i have ever tried. So, I have been craving red beans and rice with sausage and a little French bread. I looked and looked and finally landed at Liuzza's. An Italian establishment that has been around since 1946. Mr. Garland the bartender/host/excellent people skill young man took all my cravings away when he placed those red beans in front of me. That was it, I entered into a time zone. I managed to scarfed half my plate but that was it. Everything freshly made and just good ole New Orleans flavor I remember from when I was a young one. I have been going to the place for years and love the food and casual atmosphere. The service is also typically excellent as well. They have a great selection of Italian food and some New Orleans classics. I really enjoy the roast beef poyboy with gravy and the fried seafood platter. A friend of mine recommended Liuzza's when my wife and I were visiting New Orleans for a long weekend, and he doesn't normally recommend places, so I was anxious to try the food. I'm really glad we went, because I was very happy with the food and service we received. We both ordered schooners of beer and besides a place we visited in Bermuda 27 years ago, this was the coldest beer I've ever had, and it went down quick! I wanted another one, but I would have been too full to eat, so I had to slow down, but I could definitely envision drinking another, that's for sure. I started off with the gumbo, and it was outstanding- I could have eaten a larger portion of that as my meal and been very happy. My wife had a salad to start off with, and it was fresh and tasty. For my meal, I had the oysters and shrimp, which was fried, and it was good- I added a little hot sauce to give it a kick, and the red beans and rice on the side was good. My wife ordered the chicken parm and she said it was "ok", not great. She felt the chicken was a little overcooked and breading fell right off. I remarked that we were in New Orleans and who cares about Italian food, which wasn't very smart on my part as the air suddenly got pretty chilly at our table. :) Our server was very busy, but checked on us often and she was extremely nice. Dined in at the bar for the end of happy hour with a few friends and had a wonderful time with half priced drinks (4pm-7pm, what a deal!) Our bartender, Garland, provided fast, friendly, and efficient service. He was well versed in the menu and was able to answer any of the questions we had about various dishes. We didn't dine in the restaurant area, as we enjoyed the atmosphere the bar provided, sending you back in time with the beautiful bar design and seating. Absolutely will be back to visit Garland. Went to Liuzza's for dinner after an afternoon in City Park and had a great Cajun dinner as a Northerner wanting to try some for the first time. It was very much a casual vibe but service was fine and it was a nice place to have a relaxing no frills dinner. My partner and I ordered the fried green tomatoes with shrimp remoulade, a bowl of gumbo and red beans and rice with sausage. The fried green tomatoes were great, and the red beans and rice were tender, classic and flavorful with the sausage but the real standout was the gumbo. It was our first time having Louisiana gumbo, but as a stew it had an amazing depth of flavor and complexity that we really appreciated. The soup was so good we were dipping the bread in it, it was so flavorful. We also ordered sazeracs with our food and the cocktails were delicious and not too pricey as well. I love New Orleans. Especially when you have a local as a guide. You get to go to places off the beaten path. This is a locals restaurant that has great food and service. The restaurant is typical of New Orleans style local restaurants and has an air of neighborhood friendliness to it. We arrived around 3pm, just as most lunch stragglers were leaving. Things were clean, but the the outside looks less comfortable than the inside, while the inside is dark and rather loud, even with few people in it, if only because speakers played big band music. The waitress took our order quickly (and seemed to wish we'd make up our minds even more quickly) and neglected to warn us on the first refill that soda refills aren't (necessarily) free. (Root beer and creme soda. Maybe others are. She did warn us when we requested the second drink refill.) The fried pickles were excellent. The fried onions were sliced thickly, if you like that sort of thing. Entrees included a pizza, gumbo, and grilled catfish. The gumbo and catfish were not spiced at all, and while there was hot sauce on the table (two brands!) there was no Tony Chachere's or comparable cajun seasoning, a disappointment. The pizza, by contrast, was a poorly made crust with far too much cheese and a criminal amount of oregano (or whatever that was) than makes me think the cook was trying to cover up an inferior tomato sauce. We went ahead and tried the bread pudding, which was... ok, I guess? It's hard to mess that up. I've made better, never mind had better, especially in New Orleans. Bathrooms were clean overall, though I wonder where the clear plastic glove floating in the toilet came from. Bottom line: it wasn't bad; I could eat here again, but beyond the admittedly excellent fried pickles, there really didn't seem to be any effort to make me want to return, so why would I? read more

First time eating inside Liuzza's since the pandemic and it was overdue. Instead of getting my usual spaghetti and meatballs I switched it up and ordered the eggplant Parmesan. Probably the best eggplant Parmesan I've had that wasn't homemade. The crust on the eggplant was nice and crunchy and each piece had melted cheese topped with red gravy. It came with their delicious pasta with red gravy. I added a generous sprinkling of Parmesan and dove in thinking that this may be my new go to instead of the spaghetti and meatballs. The restaurant and kitchen are currently understaffed and had only one person in the kitchen, one manning the bar, and one waitress. It didn't affect us since we were there early, but as the tables filled up the wait time for tables was growing.
