Whether it's the hot fish, the stuffed peppers, or the mashed potatoes, you can tell everything is made with quality ingredients and a lot of love. The family that runs this business has a huge heart for the community, and it shows. If you are a local looking for authentic Cajun food that stays true to its roots, look no further. Don't sleep on this spot. I rarely say this but the gumbo fckn slaps. The beef pho is INCREDIBLE. I saw the sign in the window about them having pho and thought "why not try." I'm so glad I did. The guy working behind the counter told me they had just started doing something new. I don't know what they did, but it's absolutely astounding. Very rich (for a pho). TONS of beef. This is a place you come too if you want cafeteria food and know what to get to not get food poisoning. I, as a pescatarian didn't get anything. My boyfriend got the honey chicken and we called it good. It was good but he said to never stray from the main menu. The inside looked and felt like a cafeteria. I'd also like to point out we walked past it for a few days before we realized it was actually a place to get food. People who worked there are nice. This was a find strictly using the old Google/Yelp fingers. I had been speaking with some locals about "The Old Sober" aka - Yaka Mein and began looking for places nearby that served it. After checking photos and reviews I decided that Today's Cajun Seafood was the one I wanted to try. I ordered a beef Yaka Mein, A pork boudin, and a crawfish pie. We had just gotten poured on and I was so looking forward to this hot food. There were a few little tables inside, but this is definitely more geared towards takeout. Either way, we ate it there. That Yaka Mein was everything I had hoped it would be. The beef was tender and there was plenty of it, it came with one boiled egg but I added a second one and next time I may even add a third, the noodles were cooked well, there were a lot of scallions, and the broth was hot and flavorful. Literally all I wanted out of that dish, I got. The crawfish pie was fantastic too...I don't think I'll ever go back here without getting another one of those too. Delicious fragrant mix inside of a pastry shell and fried up...exactly what you'd expect it to be. Picked this place for a quick delivery. Since we ordered online a delivery app - each plate was $11.99 for the entree and 2 sides. I ordered Pineapple BBQ chicken, shrimp pasta, and smothered cabbage. My food was good - not excellent but good. The chicken was a little dry but still good. My husband ordered fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and red beans. He really liked the red beans but the chicken was a bit dry for him as well - still good though. I found this because it was highly rated - just outside the French Quarters. You can't beat these prices. Seems like it's Chinese run/influenced. Also fast food, but great spot if you're on the run. Hits the spot. Gumbo was a bit smaller, but for $3.99 you can't expect too much. With real chunks of chicken, shrimp, sausage, celery. They throw the rice directly in. You can taste the black pepper. 12" Po Boy. Freshly deep fried shrimp. The rest is a sandwich. Lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayo. Toasty bun. This is the definition of a poor boy. Native Californian reviewing New Orleans food: This place is solid. Saw a bunch of locals lined up here so it had to be good. Honestly, my favorite was the fried catfish poboy and spaghetti. Catfish just felt so nice and healthy, hot out of the frier, and doesn't make you feel heavy after. Spaghetti reminded me of childhood. This was the best seafood gumbo I've had in New Orleans, but I've only had it 3 times. Shrimp pasta was good but not particularly spectacular. I wouldn't get the crawfish pie again. The crust was very nicely made, but I just didn't feel like the filling tasted like much. Wasn't very impressed. We went here last year (we saw it while on the Hop On-Hop Off bus tour so we hopped off). I had the catfish with cabbage and green beans and it was most excellent! The decor leaves something to be desired, especially the bathroom, but there were zero complaints about the food. read more

On my trip to New Orleans for the Bayou Classic my hunt in this trip was for Yakamein. This is another staple of Nola! This place was a little tricky to find I had to drive around a couple times. I found parking but you can only park in that area for 2 hours. The location was on the corner next to a few other food spots. Parking can be a little challenging. When you walk in the food is cafeteria style but was smelling really good. It was 2 women up from serving the food. They were nice and split the line up because for the food in the front and those who wanted yakamein or a sandwich. I don't really see you sitting and eating here more a pick up and go spot it real casual and laid back. Now let's get into the good stuff, the meat was extremely moist and tender, I believe they use a roast cut. It was well seasoned and the. Broth was very rich and savory. You can tell this was cooked with love. Everything was simple the meat, scallions,spaghetti noodles and i topped it with an egg. You have your option to put soy sauce and spice hot sauce. You could taste a little soy in the broth but I definitely put some hot sauce. For me I would have topped it with Cajun seasoning for more umph!! Jerry Springer and Judge Judy were on competing TVs the first time I walked in. The bright florescent lights and hard plastic chairs have a casual, cafeteria ambiance. Staff is friendly, prices are affordable, portions are big, and you can find a combination of Cajun and Chinese food served all day long. Hands down, no contest, the main draw here is the soft shell crab po boy. Frankly I'm shocked it's not mentioned in more reviews. Po boys in general can make you wonder how a sandwich can be more than "just a sandwich", and this one is no exception. The tomato was pale, the lettuce basic, pickle is fine. But that crunchy deep fried crab, the entire crab, on perfect French bread, is divine. This is still one of my favorite po boys in the city and I think about it when I'm away. The crawfish pie has a hard. Jamaican beef patty or empanada like exterior, with a filling of peppers, onions, and tender crawfish. It tastes warm and comforting, like soup broth. The fried chicken is juicy, but is definitely seasoned more like Chinese-American as opposed to Southern fried chicken. Comes with duck sauce on the side. I don't think I'm the biggest fan of the sausage they use in their gumbo and red beans and rice, but I did enjoy their red beans. This was my first place having that dish and I loved the sweetness of the sauce coating the rice, a hearty and filling meal. The shrimp pasta is very heavy. The shrimp are suspiciously mushy and the noodles overcooked, Despite that it wasn't quite bad, it's just one of those dishes you eat and you know you're doing harm to your body lol. There is nothing even remotely healthy about this, it's perfect to keep in the fridge for a hangover meal. Come here for that po boy if nothing else! read more

Dude! I'm from Nashville and I try hard to find hole in the wall, authentic places that are locally owned where locals frequentandit's cheap...nailed it on this one! Had so many choices and although I thought some were strange...like spaghetti as a side, that's what made it even cooler. I was definitely the only non local in there and it was so worth it. Probably the best bourbon chicken I've had, and the shrimp Mac n cheese?!!! I'm getting some tomorrow and trying some other stuff. The potatoes were buttery and flavorful and although I didn't eat all of the soft shell crab on a bun, it was definitely a scratch off my bucket list. It's not for everyone, but it was good. I picked up some poboys at Today's Cajun Seafood for a picnic in City Park. I think it's run by Chinese people, because they have a lot of Chinese take out foods available along with Cajun/Creole foods. It's very cheap. It looks like it's more of a takeout place since the seating kinda reminds me of a food court. I tried their seafood gumbo and a turkey neck, as an appetizer to their poboys. The seafood gumbo was a bit salty, but my favorite and cheapest gumbo I had in New Orleans. The turkey neck was boiled/braised in broth, so the texture wasn't the best but it was tasty. The poboys held up well on the trip to the park. The softshell crab poboy had fully fried crab in it, much to the dismay of a friend who despised the overly fishy/oceanic flavor and extreme umami of the crab's internal organs. I happen to like that part of the crab though. The catfish poboy was well fried and very tasty, and the breading did not overpower the catfish. I would definitely order from here again, it's just too bad they weren't open late. read more

Well, if you're looking for the Cajun Seafood restaurant, this is not that place. It's a little deceiving because they are a completely different restaurant and food offerings. That being said, I found the food still tasty and just what I needed for some quick and quasi-healthy. Staff was very welcoming and the food was tasty too. The honey chicken wasn't all that great the skin was coming off and the taste could've been better. Also it was a bit dry. However, the Shrimp Fried rice was delicious!! It had to be one of the best rice I've had in a while. It's sooo hard finding good Shrimp fried rice. So many restaurants mess it up. But this rice was just Perfect. Full of flavor, soft shrimp, rice was also soft and not hard like rocks. Thankfully I had soy sauce at home already bc I didn't have any in my bag. I don't care how good the SFR is, I always need my soy sauce. Needless to say I enjoyed my meal. Especially the rice. Will definitely eat here again. This is a neighborhood grease spoon. The food is ok at best. It's a cross between the restaurant chain " New China Kitchen " and Black Cajun momma's kitchen. It was not what I expected. It's set up is you choose 1 meat 2 sides for around $10. I chose baked Vietnamese catfish fillet,broccoli cheese casserole and butter beans with rice and sausage and a piece of boudin to taste. It was ok. I didn't like the location the lack of parking, the trash on ground right in front of the door and a couple other things. Great place if you need a quick bite and want Creole, Asian cuisine, or a Po Boy. Confusing when you go in if it's a buffet or not, but it's not. They have plates to order or you can do a combo- anything from grilled or fried seafood to an egg roll, to gumbo, to fried rice, to pho, to fried chicken. They weren't making boiled seafood when we went in. Quick stop on your way out of town or if you don't feel like waiting at a restaurant on a Saturday or Sunday morning. If you're in the mood for seafood then this is definitely the place. All entrees are a healthy size portion and are reasonably priced. Each meal comes with bread. I ordered the catfish, potato salad and rice. Be careful if you have an allergy and make sure you check your food before you leave the establishment. I was so glad I checked my box of food. I asked for rice without shrimp. However, my rice still came with shrimp. Luckily, I was able to give to a friend who loves shrimp. Besides this incident of giving me rice with shrimp, the meal was delicious. It smelled good and the presentation was on point. Everything was seasoned well and cooked to perfection. I would've given 5 stars but I had to remove a star due to the representative not clarifying that my rice still had shrimp. The portion size for the price was The Best I've come across in NOLA. The quality of the sides, seafood mac & cheese and shrimp fried rice, was excellent. I want to start off by saying excellent staff! The kind lady who was helping us was such a sweetheart! We really enjoyed talking to her, and she was so helpful in answering our questions, and giving us extra time to decide. The 3.5 rating is to give an honest review of the value (quality to price). I was originally so excited to try this place because there were so many good reviews about it being hidden "hole in the wall" gem. The crawfish was a decent price, however they weren't fresh and small compared to the competition. Upon arriving to NOLA, my friend and I randomly stumbled upon another local gem that sold large and super fresh crawfish for way less. I don't know how they're able to do it, but it was a steal. As for the other food sold here, the seafood lasagna and baked fish was good! I would still recommend this fast food place if you're in the area, and need something quick and cheaper.
