We arrived at opening to a line already forming. We were seated immediately, but the place packed out fast. The food portions are massive. The Roast Beef is definitely the star, well-known here for a reason and delicious. The Shrimp Po-boy was good, but I'm still searching for my personal favorite. The PoBoy is the really good go-to sandwich for R&O but also the Muffaletta is about 2-3 meals if you order the full. They are not messin' around on sandwiches at R&O. The onion rings are a good, tasty fried appetizer but it is a mound of onion and batter. All in all this is a great lunch spot with a good way not to ever walk away hungry. But when you see all these "Times-Picayune awards for #1 roast beef"- I didn't even think when "the roast beef tastes like Worcestershire sauce" was mentioned. I said you could eat the: bread, tomatoes, mayo, and lettuce and it would taste better than Dinty Moore with Worcestershire sauce. It seems to be a common method like these new burger places. Had lunch with my son on Sunday 9-6-26 at about 1pm. This place is dropping the ball. We both order 2 large shrimp boys, the size of poboy is smaller. One side of mine had 5 shrimp and the other 4...very disappointed . His was same size. By the time you add dressed, tax and tip over $20 for 1...just n o t worth it. OMG, Where are these great reviews coming from? Holy cow my fried fish was awful. It only says "fish" on the menu, not catfish, etc. It certainly was a mystery fish. Mullet or some other garbage fish. The fries were blond and mushy. I simply could not eat it. Someone else had stuffed crabs and he knew they wouldnt be great but didnt expect not to be able to eat them. He said it was like salty carboard. Another had meatballs and said the sauce was too sweet. When the waitress came back and asked if wanted to go boxes and we all said no, she said are you sure? We didnt bother telling her why. My 95-year-old Aunt her daughter and several cousins eat there several times a month. I went to pick up an order for her today since she fell and broke her shoulder, ordered at the register and was told it would be at least 20 minutes which turned into 45 minutes. As I went to sit at a table nearby I was told the table was needed. Four people were seated, looked at the menu, ordered their food and ended up eating their meal before my takeout was ready. Eventually I was directed to a seat at the front of the restaurant. When asked why I was reseated I was told tables are only for customers. I hate leaving a negative review because we really enjoyed dining here frequently when we lived in New Orleans. The vibe is still casual and low key, and I even recognized the somewhat surly (but helpful underneath) servers from years ago. Unfortunately, the food just wasn't very good on our recent visit. The roast beef poboy wasn't debris, as in the past, but rather consisted of tiny strips of beef in a gravy that lacked flavor. The onion rings were overcooked and greasy, and I suspect the oil was old. The kids said the spaghetti wasn't good and they only ate the meatballs. The hot sausage poboy was just okay. The bright spots were the muffaletta, crab claws, and french fries which were all done very well. Maybe it was a bad day, but we were pretty disappointed since we were looking forward to some old favorites that didn't hit the mark. read more

It gets a little crowded and loud but the food is well worth it. I recently ordered a muffuletta to go. Wow, what a sandwich. Full of meat and a thick layer of olive salad melted into the cheese. This is an old time classic seafood restaurant that seems to be trying to live on its reputation. On ur last two visits we noticed the same mediocrity. Problems especially with their fried seafood. The crust on all the items we ordered (seafood platter) was not at all crisp. The coating on the seafood was dark. It seemed like the oil it was fried in might have been past its time. Our guests asked where was the seasoned crunch coating. It was not on our plates. We have enjoyed R&O's for many years, but things have definitely changed. The Roast Beef Po Boy is still good, but the stuffed crab was pretty bad. Tried the BBQ Shrimp dish, it was sweet... not good. Service was good. Ambiance is classic. Pricing is fair. The oyster po-boy may be the best in the area - although it is not on the correct bread. They use a toasted sesame loaf bread, which works with the oysters. My very good friend who visits from New York State just about every year loves to get her fix of their shrimp po boy as we did May 27 her last day here.... My total was 52.00 and I left a 6$ tip on a to go order and to my bewilderment my card was charged 68$ soooo whom ever cashed out the ticket added a 1 to my 6 .....making it 16$ shame on you and may karma bite your arse! Of course the roast beef PB was most popular choice for our group and was as epic as it always has been with every annual trip we make. I have not written a review in a long time. However, I felt compelled to write this one . It is not often my wife and I get a chance to dine at R & O's . I think it has been a year. We figured that if we arrived on Saturday at 4:00, hopefully we would beat the Saturday crowds. R and O's looks like it always does. Extremely clean old school New Orleans with the TV's showing collage baseball. We got lucky and were seated immediately. After ordering drinks, We began to study the menu intensely. To start, we decided to share the large Italian salad with olives. The salad was served on a huge platter and was enough to feed an army. It was very good but we brought most of it home as leave room for our entrees. For entrees, my wife ordered the stuffed crab platter with sweet potato fries instead of regular french fries. I tasted the stuffed crabs and they were excellent with great flavor and not over loaded with breadcrumbs. I ordered the seafood platter with a soft shell crab and hush puppies. The platter was full of fried shrimp, oysters and catfish. And a huge soft shell crab on top. All the seafood was fried to absolute perfection. During the meal, our server was always checking to see if we needed more drinks or anything else we needed. She was a very, very good server unfortunately, I cannot remember this young lady's name. Overall, we had a wonderful early dinner and I can't wait to go back there again. In my opinion, R&O has been able to maintain the quality of the food and the ambience of the restaurant justifying the reputation of the restaurant . I highly recommend R&O, but if you go on a weekend , do what we did arrive go early. When we left, they were getting very, very packed with customers.. There is nothing more spicy here than Amber. Sadly she has evidently moved to the kitchen and is not usually in the dining room any longer. Last visit we did note an elevated food experience so perhaps Amber's absence from the dining room and presence in the kitchen is after all a mixed blessing. Perfectly cooked oysters with a crunch on the outside and so moist and flavorful on the inside, onion rings unrivaled by any other, perfect blend of spices for the boiled crawfish. Myself and a group of friends ordered via phone for pickup. We used the menu on their Google business listing to order. When I called to place the order, the total was more than doubled (over $100!). Our order consisted of a whole roast beef poboy, two adult fried shrimp plates, a kids shrimp plate, a small cheese pizza and a side order of fries. When we arrived to pick up the food, I asked about the pricing difference. The manager who came out claimed they weren't the ones who posted the menu attached to their business Google listing but for the inconvenience, they offered a couple of bread puddings. She said the food was worth the price and that we would more than enjoy it. Well, unfortunately once we got home and opened our boxes, we were rather disappointed in the meals. I got the adult fried shrimp plate which mostly consisted of French fries and only a few medium sized shrimp. No tartar sauce or ketchup on the side, no hush puppies. The overall flavor was something I'd expect from up north, instead of the usual good 'ole New Orleans flavor. For $20.95 I expect way more! I get 3x the amount of shrimp on the KIDS PLATE at Westbank grill. Needless to say, we will be looking for seafood somewhere else next time. read more

My Wife and my Daughter ate Spaghetti and Meatballs this afternoon and I had the Fried Shrimp Plate. The Spaghetti and Meatballs were loved by my Wife and Daughter, however my Shrimp Plate was a rip-off for only about 12 Shrimp with a plate full of French Fries for a little over $20!! For that price I should've had 2 Hush Puppies, a small Coleslaw and at least 24 Shrimp! Never again will I order a Shrimp Plate at this Restaurant again! The Men's Restaurant was like the inside of an old 1960's Gas Station, with holes in the walls by the Urinal. The Owners need to seriously consider cleaning up and renovating their Restrooms! This is definitely a restaurant locals frequent. Got a recommendation from some locals while I was getting car serviced. We ordered garlic parm bread, half a serving of boiled shrimp, gumbo, and fried shrimp plate. Everything was xcellent. Be sure to include the oysters in your gumbo. We hadn't been here in a while so decided to visit again. We ordered onions rings and a large roast beef to share. We think the place has taken a few steps back as far as quality and portion size. The large roast beef was much smaller than in the past . The taste was not as good either. ( very salty ) The biggest disappointment was the onion rings. They were extremely greasy and the coating did not stick. We both felt uneasy we got home due to the greasy onion rings.
