This was by far the best restaurant I visited in New Orleans. The odd thing when I visit this city is the number of recommendations I receive that don't pan out. Service was warm and punctual; offering their recommendations was a nice treat. The chicken gumbo might have the best flavored roux around for an elevated gumbo dish. This was our first time having the bbq shrimp sweet potato pie and oh my, it was so good!! The oysters were really good too but the pie is the star appetizer. The fish came out a bit undercooked which they fixed pretty quickly. It was very tasty and with the biggest lump crab cake ever that had a deliciously paired sauce with it. Simply a wonderful experience from beginning to end! First, the room is delightfully unpretentious, such a refreshing change from most of the places in the French Quarter. As we stayed late at Jazz Fest, we were able to shift our Resy later quite easily after a request directly to Gabrielle. We walked in (after parking easily just a block down the street!) and were immediately seated by the friendly hostess. Our sever Rosalind was informative and just sassy enough to be totally fun! We started with the Duck Pate which was awesome, especially with the Orange Marmalade (such an unexpected and terrific combination!). We ran out of toasts, so it was a good thing I had not been able to resist getting the Leidenheimer Loaf starter as well (I'm a baker, and just couldn't not get this excellent French bread!). Then it was time for me to dig into my Slow Roasted Duck, which was super tender and tasty! Definitely a highlight. And then it was time for dessert. I was totally tempted by the Chocolate Pecan Pie, but the bartender happened to walk by. I asked him what his favorite dessert was and he stopped dead in his tracks. He smiled and told me the Lemon Chess Pie was an unforgettable experience and that was what he always gets. I like lemon, but it is not something that normally draws my attention. But, if one is going to ask for a recommendation, one would be an idiot to ignore it - Lemon Chess Pie it was to be. And he was so right!!!! I can't believe it's been 4 years since my last review. This is still one of my top recommended restaurants in the city. The food is consistently excellent. The wine list and cocktails are well curated/made. The service is top notch. AND it's not a stuffy formal place that feels like you're going to be reprimanded for using the wrong fork. It is much easier to get to the restaurant now that the street work in front of their space is finally complete. No dodging giant potholes anymore! We celebrated Mom's birthday here last year and they did a great job of decorating the table and making her feel extra special. If you haven't been, it's time to go! read more

Nice ambiance and friendly service. I enjoyed my Traiteur Fish (seared filet of gulf fish, jumbo crab cake, preserved lemon aioli). It was a big portion: I got two fish filets and a huge crab cake. The fish was excellent . Love the creole seasoning. The crab cake was crispy outside and very juicy inside - unfortunately I didn't get to finish it. It was too much food. My friend got the smoked gumbo with sausage, however she didn't like it. She said it was too smoky for her so much so that it tasted bitter after a while. She didn't finish it either. read more

Gabrielle was recommended to us by a few locals as one of the few definitive restaurants to eat at before we leave New Orleans. When we arrived, the place stood out among the surrounding buildings, it has so much style that it's out of place but felt perfectly inviting and honestly, New Orleans can be described in the same way, so it only added to the experience. The interior is cozy but intimate and if I didn't have a beautiful date sat directly in front of me, I might be able to explain it in more detail. It left nothing to be desired. We both decided to go with the 4 course meal for $65 a person. The first course, Daube Glacé, a slow cooked beef meant to be spread over toast was delicious. Never quite had something like that, I could only think how impressive it was they were able to add so much flavor to the meat. The second course, I received the Seafood Gumbo while my wife received the fried rabbit filet. Against etiquette, I tried some of her dish and it left me wishing I had received it as well. With that said, the seafood Gumbo was still great, it's just a testament to how phenomenal the rabbit was. The third and main course, "Turducken" was a mix of chicken, duck, and turkey, Frankensteined to create an assemble of the 3 birds. They did a great job of making it hard to discern where each meat began or the other stopped but not so much so you couldn't distinguish while tasting. The sum of all of its parts was a great dish but maybe there was too much going on, the first few bites were just puzzling to me but I still enjoyed it. The waiting staff went out of their way to make sure we got the perfect drinks for our meals and were ever so lovely. Gabrielle intrigued us, we look forward to be back for more! read more

When I visit, I'm reminded of dinners with my Aunt Trish, an elegant Southern lady who, as she glided quietly through her home, entertained with comforting attention to her guests' happiness. And Gabrielle's food? For good reason, people joke that New Orleans offers "a thousand restaurants, all serving the same menu," and Gabrielle's fare includes many of the components offered by other NOLA cooks. But Chef Greg Sonnier isn't a corporate mimic who checks the competition's menus before deciding what to cook. He's a master of traditional ingredients, and though he bends them to his creativity, he never bothers with performative modernist nonsense. Chef Greg's food might stray from old-fashioned style, but it's always recognizable, and always satisfies. People like the duck. I'll grant that the dish has a marvelous flavor, but it's too delicate for me; I prefer poultry with a meatier bite. I'm inclined to order Chef Greg's simple, perfectly-done Traiteur Fish, or something over carbs and under gravy, or whatever's special. No. When the rains come, water from the street can back up into the dining room. But flooding isn't a problem unique to Gabrielle; in 2024 alone, I saw both Lil Dizzy's and Ray's On The Ave get swamped. It being New Orleans, I'm surprised that S&WB hasn't charged its customers for providing them with a water feature. Flooding aside, the worst thing I can say about Gabrielle Restaurant is that it's only open three nights a week. But Chef Greg isn't a mascot; when he's in the kitchen, he's in it, y'know?, and his wife, Mary, was in there for decades, cooking alongside him, until she semi-retired. This was the first time we had dined at Gabrielle just picking from the regular menu. All the previous times had been for fixed menus events. The dining room was not too crowded, but I suspect since it was the Friday before Mardi Gras, a lot of potential customers were at the parades. Looking over the wine list, I saw they had a 2011 Toscana at a reasonable price. We ordered it and had the waiter decant the bottle for us while we looked over the menu. My wife and I agreed to share the Roasted Beet salad to begin our meal. We had enjoyed it before. My wife ordered the Slow Roasted Duck which came with mushrooms mixed in the duck dirty rice. The fish of the day was speckled trout, so I ordered the Traiteur Fish seared perfectly with the lobster ravioli. Dinner was finished with the Peppermint Patti, a slice of chocolate cake with a scoop of peppermint ice cream. We had a great meal. We had not had either entrée before. There was a little sharing. Hubby and I had a lovely date night here on a cool, Saturday evening in NOLA. The establishment is quite cozy and intimate. Felt like I was dining at someone's home, in the best way. Waitress was very polite and attentive. Our food and drinks were divine. The BBQ shrimp pie is a must try. Truly unique and delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed my veal roulade entree. This was my first time trying veal. It was perfectly tender and paired well with the lobster ravioli. Very rich in flavors. Hubby ordered the traiteur fish that was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Delicate and tasty. He did enjoy his meal but I will say, the jumbo lump crab cake that the fish was paired with surprisingly lacked luster and flavor, especially compared to everything else we had. I started with the gumbo and trust me, I'd go back just for that, the dark roux was delicious. Next up was the jambalaya, it was good but I was not big on one of the sauces tha was too garlicky for my taste. The peach shortcake was good but shortcake a bit dry. An unassuming hole in the wall on the outside with a very cutesy intimate dining room that pays homage to jazz fest with a lot of vintage decor. The service was top tier, as good as any renowned white table cloth restaurant and the deal could not be beat! Every dish we got was divine, prepared perfectly and came out so timely. Had an enjoyable Réveillon dinner at Gabrielle a couple weeks ago. Very nice, homey ambience. All courses were delicious and the service was spot on. Gabrielle Restaurant was opened up back in 1992 by Chefs Mary and Greg Sonnier who named the restaurant after their daughter. This restaurant had some rough times re-opening after Hurricane Katrina but since setting up in their current location Gabrielle has remained a popular spot in the neighborhood for great Cajun food ever since. There's a lot to enjoy here at Gabrielle's. It is a great date place and a good fit for family events. When I walked in and peered around, I observed the walls are decorated with beautiful posters of New Orleans and Mardi gras ornaments. Rumor has it that there will be a huge parade! After heading home from a relaxing walk on the Lafitte Greenway, we decided to visit around 5:45 pm. It was then my mom and I walked in to try this restaurant for the very first time. I have learned that one can make a reservation ahead of time for a special occasion or random date. When we sat down, we had been given two menus, one for the starters, salads, and entrees and another for the alcoholic beverages. We had ordered the oysters Gabie and found out it was a casserole with cheese which my mom cannot have, so decided to go with the barbecue shrimp pie which had rave reviews (thank you Yelpers!) and also lactose free friendly roasted beet salad (hold the gorgonzola bleu cheese). Lastly, we had enjoyed the seared filet of gulf fish as our entree to share! The trout was so good. I think it was the most memorable part of our meal. If you visit Treme, I highly recommend the barbecue shrimp pie, the roasted beet salad and the amazing seared filet of gulf fish. read more

What a gem. The BBQ Shrimp Pie (5/5) might be the best dish we experienced during our New Orleans visit. That sauce is a work of art. The Smoked Gumbo (4/5) was excellent, but for some it might be a bit too smokey. They also have the Seafood Gumbo which we didn't try but was recommended. The Slow Cooked Duck dish (4/5) was also solid and cooked well. The crispy charred piece of skin on top was the perfect texture complement. Lastly, the house baked french bread that comes in a brown paper sleeve was special. Light and fluffy with a delicate crunchy shell was the best kind of mop to soak up the shrimp pie sauce and gumbo. Had a great meal at Gabrielle! I went for dinner and it wasn't too crowded. It is smaller than I expected on the inside, but it is decorated with a lot of cool jazz fest posters on the walls I tried their Coolinary menu which is a $45 3 course experience. I am so glad I did this and was able to try really good food at a great price. To start, I got the eggplant. It was a fried eggplant with a delicious cream sauce on top. It was so crispy and I would definitely order this again if it was available. For an entree I got the jambalaya. It was plated really nicely stacked with shrimp, scallop, and a fried oyster. I have never had jambalaya like this before and I am local to NOLA. Lastly, I got the peppermint patty dessert. This dessert has the perfect amount of peppermint and tasted delicious! The ice cream with the chocolate cake was a great combo! Overall, if you are looking for a spot with good New Orleans style food, this would be a good option! Their regular priced menu is a but expensive, but if you order the right things, the bill won't be outrageous! Side note: I tried the duck liver pate also and it was really really good. We shared the peppermint patty dessert, very tasty. Atmosphere is simple but fine, not too loud. It is located a 20 minute walk outside of the main tourist area. Service was very good. My only comment is that they turned away a party of 4 right after we sat down. There were plenty of available tables. Overpriced and Underwhelmed My wife and I chose this restaurant for dinner tonight mainly because of the reviews. It must be mostly tourists leaving reviews because this place was very underwhelming. As a born-and-raised local, I know how good food should taste. It wants to be Ruth's Chris in an underserved neighborhood with few amenities. The security guard sitting at the front door says it all. I can't say enough how overpriced this place is. It's not the first restaurant to be located in a sketchy neighborhood. Restaurant Mandich (long gone), Cafe Dauphine, Jack Dempsey's, and Dooky Chase, which is a couple blocks away, come to mind. However, none of these restaurants try or tried to be something they're not. We ordered the she-crab bisque, bbq shrimp pie, beef tenderloin and duck. The bread was the highlight. It came out piping hot and was yeasty and chewy and flaky. I could've just eaten the bread. The crab bisque, which I make at home, reminded me of Campbell's chicken noodle soup. Not the taste, just the lack of meat. It was more like essence of crab. It was $8 for some brown, spicy water. The bbq shrimp pie was much better. It was a 3 inch sweet potato pie topped with 4 shrimp on a bed of sauce. It had a buttery, flaky crust, but at $14, it was overpriced. My wife's beef tenderloin was rubbery and under-seasoned. It was certainly not worth $36. My duck was tender, but it was strangely served on a bed of shoestring fries in some orange-flavored sauce. I was hoping for Upperline quality, but it fell wayyyy short. Even our drinks were weak. We initially ordered ginger ale and it was flat. The sprite wasn't much better. We spent $123 w/ tip for the two of us. For that kind of money, we could have gone to Ruth's, Desi Vega's, Mr. John's, and the list goes on. Pretty much anywhere else. And in a much better, safer neighborhood. I just realized I didn't take pictures of the steak and duck. Service was good by the way. I don't remember the gentleman's name, but he said he lived in Slidell. He was fast, personable and knowledgeable. Also, ambiance was good, overall. We went here after reading all the great reviews on Yelp and Reddit. The ambience is very cozy. We had the BBQ shrimp pie as an appetizer and it was delicious, although I feel $21 is a bit much to pay for a small appetizer with four pieces of shrimp on it. We also got the warm bread in a bag with butter, and that was very good. We ordered the Cajun Asian appetizer, which to me was good but not amazing. We went a little crazy and also got the duck fat fries, which were nice and crispy but very thin. Thick cut fries would've been better IMO. The sauce they came with was kind of bland. For our main meals we got two different types of gumbo. Maybe this was our mistake in ordering the wrong thing, but we were both disappointed with our gumbo. My husband's roux was very thin, and the seafood in mine was very mushy. The drinks were decent. All in all, not as great of a culinary experience as I'd been hoping for. I have dined at Gabrielle numerous times through the years at both the old and current locations, and have never been disappointed. It is truly a hidden gem in the city, and arguably may serve the finest food without being pretentious. The wait staff is always on point - courteous, knowledgeable and well paced while covering any and every need. The duck is is legendary for a reason, and the BBQ Shrimp Pie may well be the best bite of food one eats their lives. Other offerings change, but always maintain the same quality and unique flair. Gabrielle is always my go to whenever I am in New Orleans, and will choose it every time over the better known locations (Commander's, Arnaud's, Galatoire, etc).
