Are you constantly on the lookout for 5-star food without the stuffy atmosphere, haughty staff, or having to pay a literal leg to foot the bill? Well, quest no more because the Big Boy is here to tell you I found it! Just up the good ole Dixie Highway (modern-day US1) a spell from BBDO HQ is where you will find Chef's Kitchen & Soul Food in Cocoa, FL. Enter the Big Boy and my undying pledge to eating. Oh, yeah, and my timeless promise to provide the dining public with no-holds-barred, flavor-focused food reviews. The first thing I noticed about the joint was the sign on the outside of the door (see picture). Chuckling softly to myself, I just knew I was going to love this place. The main man here is an amiable guy that goes by Mike. Not only did Mike have his pants pulled up and securely belted, but he has brilliantly captured the meaning of flavorful food and need I remind you, flavor and execution of said flavor is why we at BBDO do this. Checking my pants one last time, I strolled up to the counter and placed an order for fried shrimp with sides of collard greens, mac and cheese, black-eyed peas and some banana pudding to round out the me(al). Subjugating my brain's desire to foray into the land of those who suffer from Witzelsucht (with pants being pulled, peas being mushed and bananas in the mix how can puns and innuendos not creep into one's mind?) I ambled off to find a table and await for what I hoped was some good ole fashioned Southern Comfort food. It wasn't long before my order was up, and as one can see everything certainly looked as it should. The Shrimp, was battered with a most succulent coating and deep fried (as all good food is) to golden crispiness. The black-eyed peas were bursting with Southern flavor and mushy as they should be. These do not need anything. No salt, no pepper, nothing. They are good to go as served and then some. Next up on the Big Boy's discerning palate was the world-famous southern staple of sauteed Collard greens. I have to say that these were some of if not the, best greens I have yet had the pleasure of scarfing down. Having been sauteed to perfection with just the right amount of bacon and other seasonings, like the black-eyed peas before it, lacked for nothing in the flavor category. The mac & cheese was a creamy, delicious, cheesy concoction dancing across my taste buds and I had to ask myself, how can it get any better? The answer to that question can be found in three words: Southern Banana Pudding. You don't think I got this big just eating burgers, did you? Oh, no loyal reader, you have to indulge in sweets ever so often to get this rotund. A few days after sampling Mike's grub for this review, I ordered four trays of the magical banana glop. There is a secret ingredient in here that my trained palate could not discern until the third pound or so (I will allow you the joy of discovering that yourself). If this is not the best darn Banana Pudding in the USA I will throw my favorite hat to the gators. Mike has to serve up some of the best Southern Comfort Food I have ever eaten. When I walked into this established were blessing me with Gospel soft music and the aroma of the food. The young lady greeted us with a beautiful smile and a conversation explaining the different specials they had for the day. They have a great amount of different dishes to choose from to eat. It didn't take long even though the other foods from the specials are cooked to order. The atmosphere was soft and the melodies were very relaxing. This the first time going there I'm not even from the area I got 5 piece wings and fries for the price of 10 dollars !!!! It took 40 minutes to get my food the wait was very long for 5 pieces of wings and fries ??? This review is strictly based off of the food. This is a fairly new restaurant. Came here on a Sunday afternoon, which I would suggest calling in your order 20-30 mins ahead of time. Placed 2 orders: * 5 pc fried wing dinner (not full wings) w/ greens and mac n cheese The wings were good. They were nice and hot. had good flavor and was fried nicely. The chicken was moist and which matched nicely with the flavor. Mac n cheese was amazing. My wife is a Mac n cheese connoisseur who also makes her own amazing Mac n cheese and she gave a double thumbs up. It was cheesy, great flavor, moist ... and didn't cone off like a casserole. One of the best Mac n cheese sides she's had from a restaurant. * Meatloaf dinner w/ candy yams, and homemade mash potatoes. The meatloaf was poppin'. Tastes just like grandma's meatloaf. And the mash potatoes was mmm mmm good. The yams was soft and tasty...they wasn't too sweet.. good balance on the sweetness. I would def get these to entrees again. But I'm also eager to try something different on the menu the next time. The eating in space is pretty tight, and it doesn't take much for it to get crowded. The food itself was good when we got it. I ordered another pork chops, collards, and black eyed peas. The flavor was there, a little salty on the pork chop but good. My mom also got the smother Turkey wings that comes with stuffing, and she got collards and mac n cheese. The Mac n cheese didn't taste processed like other places and tasted good. The Turkey wings were moist and the stuffing was also good. The red velvet cake we had for dessert tasted like someone from the church made it. It was moist, had just the right amount of sugar, and the frosting was light. The cake was gone in a second. The only downside about the restaurant was the wait time. If anything order ahead over the phone so you don't have to wait 30-40 minutes in the restaurant. The food is definitely worth 4 stars, but the wait makes it drop to 3. Food is good but bad business practices. Hours on google and hours on Facebook page do not matter as they are not adhered to. They change the hours to accommodate catering. Ok fine. However if I call for the next days hours (as if you are going to do a catering gig by this time it is already on your schedule and should know what the hours will be) I should not be told and I quote " We MIGHT be open at 12:45" I responded with a rhetorical question to make sure I heard her right. "You MIGHT be open tomorrow?" And sure enough she responds "Yes we MIGHT be open around 12:45 tomorrow ". I do not know how you expect to keep a business open with these kind of business practices. This place could easily make more money and more business if they had better business practices. read more

CHECK YOUR FOOD BEFORE YOU LEAVE. I wanted to sub the rice out, but charged for an extra side. Fine. The breading was falling off my single piece of fish that had juice from my sides all on the bottom...sigh. Missing a side clearly on the receipt. The potato salad this time was terrible. The smothered pork chops and potato salad delicious. The fish is great. Yet they don't the staple to fish coleslaw. They always out of fish.

Had a great meal today and will definitely be back. Been hearing a lot about this place and I go by it all the time so today was the day....wow what a meal! The place is really set up for takeout but we ate in to be able to try the food hot and fresh. The booths were comfy and clean. Ordered at the counter and sat down to wait. Our drinks were brought to our table. Our food was brought in to-go containers and bagged but it didn't taste like normal takeout. Boxes were piled full of food ....hot and yummy. Hubby had meatloaf, mashed potatoes, cabbage and Mac and cheese while I had Pork chops, rice and gravy, potato salad and black eye peas. Better than home cooking, we couldn't decide what we liked best it was all so good. Bonus that it came in containers because there was so much food we'll be eating at least two more meals from it. All I can say is...it was a 25 min wait on 5 wings...cool it's ok I'm getting 5 whole chicken wings...25 mins later I got 5 wings...5 hot wings wings...I wish it was stated in the menu because I wouldn't have gotten them. Everything is was just ok. No seasoning, no love. Won't be back read more

I went to this restaurant 2 times in two months to be fair. The porkchops were good but both times I only received 1 side instead of two, never got my potato salad. They charge you a checkout fee on credit card transactions. I used a debit card and was still charged. Two problems with these charges:1. There are no signs posted stating they charge a checkout fee. 2. They gave me a receipt when I placed and paid for my order, which did not have the checkout fee listed, when I received my takeout order, I got a second receipt which listed the checkout fee (same totals on both receipts). I felt like it was hidden until the customer left. I spent $13.95 with a checkout fee of .90 cents, that's about 6.5%, credit card fee transactions are usually 3 or 4 percent. I will not support a business that treat customers this way. read more

The banana pudding is amazing a must try. My favorite dish is the chitterlings dinner but they have not had any for awhile.
