I found this place on yelp when I was craving for tempura one Sunday night. We were greeted and seated as soon as we got to the place. There were a lot of customers dining in for Sunday dinner. For this first visit, I tried: SHRIMP TEMPURA DINNER- I was kind of disappointed with the batter that was used. It was more of a Panko breading rather than the Tempura batter. The Panko breading did make it crispier but I was actually looking forward to having the original tempura batter. MEXICAN ROLL- this was delicious. I loved the fresh cilantro in each roll. PORK BELLY UDON- very satisfying. Parking was easy since it is located in a strip mall. The place was clean and the service was attentive. It's getting harder to find new sushi places! When we walked in the entrance, there was a strong odor of bleach (you can tell they just cleaned). I'm not sure why they didn't prop the doors open to vent out the smell. We were the only customers there (2 of us). I ordered 3 rolls and a side of white rice. My rollrolls were the Godzilla, Sweet Potato, and the Philadelphia. Service was quick, but the rolls were okay, average I'd say. Picked up. Salmon roll was okay, maybe not very fresh fish. tonkotsu was not good, salty and slightly gamey, and not very silky. It seems to me that perhaps cornstarch was used to thicken it instead of the gelatin and marrow from the pork bones or the pig was old as heck. beef shank was overcooked and old. the only thing I really liked was tuna tartare, everything else was average. Ramen soup- meat hard like a pece of shoe, lots of oversized noodles and little broth, next I've ordered sushi roll but I specifically asked no crab! (What they call snow crab is nothing else but imitation crab meat. ) The waiter told me that now everyone is doing it. I'd give it no more than three starts. I'm sorry but this was not it. Presentation was lacking big time. My friend ordered the Dragon Roll and specifically asked for it to be fried tempura style. But it wasn't. Besides just having a cool name, the sushi here is also good. Chiba is just good but it's not good enough to get you high. It has a lot of pretty basic sushi along with more interesting types. Also it has a drive thru window if you can believe it. The sushi prices are okay. Got some rolls as carryout. I ordered a couple of basic ones for us. They have a ton of rolls but only a few that are vegetarian. It made it a lot easier to choose. The first one was the Asparagus Roll. It's $3.50 and was fine. The other one was the Avocado Roll. It's $5 and was the better one. With it costing more it should be though. Rolls really weren't that big. These actually seemed pretty small compared to other places. Even though it was pretty okay we may or may not come back. It was pretty good mostly but there's only a few good choices. There's lots of other places for sushi that are similar. read more

We have eaten here numerous times and have had no issues. This past time I picked up our order and headed home. Upon opening it we had the wrong sushi rolls. I tried calling and the phone kept saying "the mailbox is full" which is odd as I just called 20 minutes prior and placed my order. There was another phone number on the receipt so I tried that. This hidden neighborhood gem was amazing! We tried the tuna tartar, yellowtail with jalapeños, spicy girl roll, super Godzilla, & flames dragon roll! They forgot the soup which they gave me future credit as I didn't want to drive all the way back. It happens I'm not bothered by that. There was a dead gnat fly on our white container on the outside but thankfully not in the food. It happens, so my review is not even considering that as it's always about the food. Tempera tasted quite different in texture than normal tempera I'm used to, it almost tasted like corn meal and dense, not crisp and light like a typical tempera. Know that when you pay certain amounts for your meal they do give you a free roll or free something depending on how much you spend. So I got a free roll included. Spent a total around 80 bucks including some tip. Compared to Whole Foods its similar in price but they give you a little less and it's sadly not as flavorful as Whole Foods sushi. The rolls lacked seasoning and were bland. They put jalapeño wedges inside one roll, which gave the roll an odd texture. The rolls was just so bland every single one and all tasted the same. I'm wondering if the rice wasn't seasoned with vinegar correctly it's just missing major flavor. read more

The menu at Chiba offers a nice variety of options. From sushi to hibachi and a good amount of appetizers. I think the food overall is decent and fresh. They are creative with their rolls which is a plus. The hibachi is also good and you get a good amount for what you pay. It's a good place to get decent food at a fair price. I prefer to come here for the hibachi rather than the sushi. The inside has ample seating and customer service is good. The drive thru option for take out is awesome! read more

Pricing is fairish, the nigiri fish is mostly very fresh and moist but of course lacks the je ne sais quoi of the unctuousness to nigiri that a standout sushi place in the city would give you. The cocktail menu is another highlight, it's very reasonably priced and there aren't some pretty tasty ones to explore on there, topping out at $8 a drink. We ordered California, Philly, and shrimp tempura rolls along with a side of chicken fried rice. Bonus points for having soy paper because that is just my preference. The rolls came out quickly and were presented so beautifully on the plate. I love how you can see them being made up at the bar too. Was a little disappointed with service. Lunch time dining with kids multiple dishes were ordered along with an order of Philadelphia roll , my kids had asked for a second order of the Philadelphia roll. When I received my check they charged me full price not the lunch special price for two rolls. I asked the server, he said because I didn't say "lunch special " in the beginning thats why I was charged full price. Chiba is a hidden treasure amongst the mundane in Darien. It hits the trifecta that's worthy of the five stars. The food was delicious with beautiful presentation. The dining area was clean and tastefully decorated and transported me straight to Japan, specifically Kyoto. The cherry on top and in my cocktail was the amazing customer service from all the staff members especially the owners. They personally greeted each and every guest on a familiar level. I've lived down the block from the old location for three years and used to walk there all the time with some wine since they were BYOB. They moved to the new location with a full bar and much larger space. The service is always prompt whether during lunch or dinner and they have some great wine options. The hibachi calamari is literally the best calamari I've ever had in my life. The rolls are always amazing. I've had nearly all of them. I really enjoy the gyoza and usually get that. The eggrolls and spring rolls are good. The tempura for me is just okay but nearly everything is above average and the gyoza and calamari is outstanding. read more

I really loved this place. Yes, it is a tiny restaurant. It is clean and cozy. They have the tasty and fresh suchis with reasonable price tag. Warm and attentive services. What else you expect more? When we went for a lunch and the lunch menu was awesome. You could pick form Sashimi or Maki. Both were great and decent size for the price. We lliked all Spicy Tuna, Unagi and Salmon rolls.
