Finished a nice stroll in Central Park and viewing of the cherry blossoms, on my way to work, decided to check out this location as it was close to my job. Upon entering around 2-3pm it was surprisingly empty. We got sat down pretty quickly and ordered the beef broccoli and chicken basil. My husband highly recommended Chef Yu's after he went on a work trip. I would say it is a little more of an elevated atmosphere than your typical Chinese food establishment. Fast service. You will not wait long for your drinks, appetizers or food. We did not feel rushed. They were very accommodating of our young son and brought him a highchair and some fortune cookies. Visited today for an early dinner with about eight people. While what we ordered was essentially vegetarian because one in our party does not eat meat or shellfish, we focused more on vegetables, tofu, and fish. Overall, I would say the food was exceptionally bad. Two of us are staying in Flushing, Queens, an area flush (no puns intended ) with a wonderful variety of Chinese cuisines from various regions of China. Chef Yu's cannot compete. Good Chinese cooks would've done an excellent job with what we ordered. While we did order some dishes w meat, no meat could be discerned, all our dishes lacked flavor - can be described as super bland, perhaps undercooked, and under-seasoned for sure. The place is old in desperate need of renovation. The staff are not friendly, almost supercilious, jaded, having experienced all kinds of customers. An all-gender handicapped restroom is on the ground floor right next to the dirty kitchen swing doors. The once white restroom door looked quite dirty. Went upstairs instead for the ladies' room. Stairs are dangerous and apparently do not meet current codes for access even for us normal people. We've been coming here year after year for many years because it's close to Penn Station, and we live all over the Metro area. As for myself and my partner, we are from the SF Bay Area and are accustomed to much better Chinese food. I will likely suggest we meet elsewhere next year for our annual "reunion" dinner. read more

I debated giving this review, but I cannot sidestep a recent issue, despite years of great experience with Chef Yu. I was introduced to Chef Yu by a friend twelve or thirteen years ago, but a recent attempt to order delivery resulted in me ordering from somewhere else and that seemed perfectly okay with the woman on the phone. Chef Yu has been a standby restaurant to which I have introduced others and from where I have phoned in countless orders for delivery over the years. So this does not come lightly for me and why I spent almost two days debating whether I should write a negative review after so many positive years. Given the woman who responded to my call was so indifferent to me, I am compelled to respond with the same cold response I received. I attempted to call in my order, which invariably includes the ever popular Spicy Diced Chicken, among other standards I regularly order for delivery or while there. This dish has been reliable over the years, but I noticed at least six years ago, that I had to begin specifying that it be made the old way with more chicken than peppers, the latter and new way being off balance and not tasting good. Whether I am dining there or calling in my orders, they have always made it the old way according to my specifications and how it was made in the kitchen when I was introduced to Chef Yu. However, two days ago the woman on the phone said they would not make it as I desired and that Chef Yu has come under new ownership. They would not take my phoned in order and I would have to order via one of the delivery services. Fair enough, I gave her every opportunity to grant my request and I offered to give her notice that I would order it via one of the delivery services, but she refused to ask the kitchen to grant my request when such delivery service order came in and she was indifferent to my suggestion that I would order from somewhere else, which is what I ultimately did. I know plenty of folks will continue to enjoy Chef Yu offerings on their menu, but for someone who has had a long term relationship and experience as a faithful standby customer with Chef Yu, this represents a break in the relationship and an indifference to a long term patron they know well from my phone number in their system and from what I expressed to the woman from different angles. I met my big homie here as he said their lunch special was a quick meal and a potential inflation buster. Nothing gets me out of bed like a potential inflation buster... Chef Yu is like a Chinese version of Buca Di Beppo. A big space with ample room and huge portion sizes at decent prices, but just straight Americanized... they don't even give you chopsticks ahahahaa. But Buca Di Beppo does have its time and place lowkey...they don't wanna have that conversation though. The menu was huge, but I went straight to the lunch specials as you know why I'm here. I got the spicy diced chicken, and I swear to god it came in under 5 minutes from the time the words "spicy diced chicken please" left my carmex filled lips. It came a little too quick (haha) as now I am fully aware that they have a big pot of that chicken on simmer in the back and just go and scoop it out, or they just throw it in the microwave and bring it right out to you. They should have just waited 10 min and I wouldn't have batted an eye. However at $11.95 and a portion big enough for 2, this EASILY qualifies as an inflation buster. The mix of chicken, white rice, and vegetables was honestly pretty damn good I can't even lie. It didn't have me feeling like I was going to die after like some americanized chinese food does. I ate the whole thing because the chicken did SLAP, and when you from where I'm from you don't leave food on the plate. I ordered the lomein and shredded beef lunch special from Chef Yu. Each entree was under $15 which I thought was a good deal. It was my first time ordering from here. My order was ready for pick up quickly. The beef lunch special came with rice, a choice of soup and a side salad. When I came to pick up my order, a lot of people were there for lunch, mostly working people in the area. The restaurant is pretty big. The portion sizes of each were generous, especially the lomein. They definitely load up the beef entree with veggies but there's a good amount of meat in there too. I thought the food was probably a 5.5 or 6/10. It was just okay. I probably enjoyed the beef more than the lomein though each was kind of greasy. The restaurant has a nice sized menu though, so I'd be open to trying something else. I don't write many reviews, but I feel that this review is a long time coming. This restaurant is probably one of the best Chinese restaurants in New York City. I have been going there for 30 years at least, I work in the Garment center, and it's very convenient. That said I will always try other Chinese restaurants and I come back to this one. The sign of a good restaurant is that it's consistent, you love a dish you order it more than once. It's always great. That is Chef Yu. The food comes out so fast too, hot, quality, and delicious. The service is not warm and fuzzy as is the case and most Chinese restaurants. But they're fine. It's respectful they refill your water glass constantly. There's always a server nearby, so you don't have to sit there waiting and waiting. Sometimes they get large tables and you still get served right away. Love their Moo Shu, cold Sesame noodles, chicken with cashews, sesame, chicken, fried rice, crispy beef, dumplings. Whatever you're in the mood for you will be happy. And the prices are great. You could take a friend out to dinner and not break the bank. It's not a first date place, it's a place that if you wanna go alone, they give you the best table in the house. If you're with someone also the same. I have never stood for more than 45 seconds before being shown to a table. I've also ordered delivery and it's always good. I prefer to be in the restaurant however over Delivery I find the portions to be just a little bit bigger. I always take some food home. I've taken other people from out of town and they say the same thing. The value is there, the food is delicious. The Place could use a little update. I was only Asian at this mandarin Cantonese place. While the place has a lot of good checks I use to screen. The walnut shrimp was really Americanized. Quality of the large shrimp was great but the heavy batter while crispy was a bit not traditional. General tsao shrimp was tangy and good quality for $12. Chef Yu had been a go-to for yeeears, but they have started to disappoint on some things. For a light lunch I usually get their Shrimp Dumplings Szechuan Style, and they have been less flavorful lately. The sauce is watered down not giving the sesame hit they used to and not as salty, delicious, and umami. I think I will have to say goodbye to this as a quick pick up lunch and also their scallion pancake sauce is not great either.
