On our way to Zion National Park, we stopped in Barstow for lunch and I tried birria tacos for the very first time. OH. EM. GEEE. They were seriously the best tacos I've ever had! Small spot, big flavor! I stopped here for lunch with a coworker and accidentally got enough food for 3 days. He got 4 different tacos and liked the carnitas the best but all of them were solid. He also added rice, beans, and flan to round out his meal. I got the Chicken Enchiladas with salsa verde and they were sooo good! I also ordered Menudo and that alone can feed a family. It arrived with super tender tripe, rich broth, cilantro, onions, and lime and handmade tortillas. I ate it for days and didn't get tired of it. Road trip and want Mexican?! Look no further! This place did not disappoint! The meat and the quality of their home made tortillas and food was on point! I devoured their gordita! Their carnitas taco was soft and crunchy! I hesitated on getting carnitas on my gordita only because I'm always a little nervous on trying out a new place. But if you like carnitas get the gordita with it! But i will say their asada was also just as delicious! That taco melted in my mouth in the best possible way! Their homes made tortillas were not too thick, they were sooo soft and delicious! Their flan was sooo good! I tried both. They also have raspados and other snacks on their menu. I was driving back from Laughlin with my family and we were really hungry. I was really looking forward to having breakfast and was disappointed that they didn't have a breakfast menu. So instead I had the carnitas enchilada, wife had the carne asada wet burrito, oldest had a pastor torta, kids had a bean burrito. I gotta admit that the food was great! We were all happy and sampling what each of us had. The only disappointment was the super cheap plastic fork and knife that I had to eat with. Found a great new pit stop on the way to and from Vegas. Mom had the chile relleno plate, wife has sopes al pastor, and I had two carnitas and one carne asada taco. WOW! Everything was as good or better than anything we've had, and we have some really good Mexican food back home. Even the horchata was excellent. Coffee was instant, and they give you a large mug of hot water and a jar of Nescafe Clasico, in the glass jar from Mexico, which is the best. Great idea cuz you can make it to your taste. I went to Chelas y Carnitas thinking I would have a beer and some good food. Unfortunately they don't serve beer. I asked the guy at the counter, "why is it called Chelas y carnitas but you don't serve beer?" He said that Chela is his mother in law. The place is a hole in the wall but their food is awesome. I had an al pastor Gordita which is one of my top two gorditas now. My buddy had an al pastor burrito and according to him it was amazing. We didn't even miss the beer. Because we went elsewhere and had a beer. I tell you what though. I would go out of my way to have more food here. Their food is so good. Better than some of the places I've been to in LA.
