I ate here are couple of days ago and it's hands down the worst Chinese I've ever eaten. I got the daily special and it included general T chix, crab won tons, pork fried rice, and BBQ pork and rounded it out with some eggs rolls, oh not to forget the egg flower soup. *general T chicken over cooked, chewy and dry. *crab won tons over cooked, hard, dry and under filled. *pork fried rice dry, lacking in flavor *BBQ pork very dry, flavor was OK *egg rolls were dry and hard on the outside and gooey on the inside. *egg flower soup lacked flavor plus the chicken in the soup was tough. In conclusion, stay away, far far away. I hope the owners read these reviews so they can improve the quality of the food read more

The food was good if you don't mind eating your family meal in a staggered setting. Service was horrible waitress never came to check on us once. Could actually hear other customers asking where she went. After waiting about 10 minutes we we t to the counter to get our bill. We get to the counter and the guy says oh 3 for lunch mind you this is the same guy that brought us our BBQ pork appetizer. Don't know if we will be back. read more

FOOD SO BAD! COPS CALLED! How bad does a restaurant have to be if you need to involve the cops? I ordered Kung pow chicken and it was inedible. I told the waitress ... and before she even took it back to the kitchen... she informed me the owner would not take it off the bill and would make me pay for it. I said "I wasn't going to pay for food I couldn't eat and let me talk to the owner". When I approached the owner ... she walked away and hid in the kitchen ... At this point the head waitress ... a short blond informed me. "If I didn't pay for the food ... it was considered theft ... and she would call the cops". So I said "call the cops". She called the cops and I waited outside for the cops to arrive. See pics. I explained the situation to the officer and he informed me that "he would arrest me for dashing and dining if I didn't pay". She tells the cop it "was a matter of taste difference". I have never dashed on a restaurant in my life. I did not want to go to jail so I paid the bill. After thinking about this. I realized a few things. The head waitress knew exactly what to say to the cops and this must happen all the time. I also realized she was right. The food at Chen's tastes so bad ... it is actually a matter of taste. Bad taste! After this experience I read the reviews on here and based on how they are written. I can tell the positive reviews on here are mostly fake. DON'T EAT HERE!!! read more

Perhaps I've been spoiled by Seattle's wide selection of Chinese restaurants, but honestly I'd even give Safeway's Chinese food 3 stars more than Chen's. Going in to the place I was well aware I was in Long Beach, so I didn't set my expectations high, (not that I have anything against Long Beach, I just don't imagine them being known for their awesome Asian cuisine). Chen being my uncles last name it even felt a tad familiar. However, upon tasting my food I still found myself disappointed and the food went mostly uneaten. The chow mein had not one noodle in it, maybe one, but that was it. Chow mein without noodles made me pretty suspicious. The sweet and sour chicken was alright, but I feel I still must give one star for a healthy average rating. 5 stars is a bit crazy. My girlfriend also noticed that her almond chicken had what appeared to be a bite taken out of it. I'm not going to leap to accusing them of recycling their food, but the thought did cross my mind. read more

Big fan of the hot and sour soup and chefs special beef. Only complaint is the atmosphere, seems very dated.

I got the double pork chow mein and almond fried chicken. None of this food was homemade! The chowmein tasted and looked like the stuff you buy in the can. I know because i buy it a few times a year. Its ok for $4 a big can. they did cut some barbecued pork and thru on top but that was the only difference. The almond chicken came from a bag heated up some how and the gravy was terrible and none of ether had any Almonds! Save yourself some money and go buy some frozen Chinese food in a local grocery store or at least stay away from these two items! read more

This restaurant has decent food. Me and my wife come here regularly. A big issue with me is the service. They hang up on you if you have any questions, and I can't think of a restaurant I have EVER been treated so rudely, while I was very polite. If you can deal with that, try it. That ruined it for me though. I will no longer go here. read more

Okay so I have had Chinese food in a lot of places. This one was pretty good. I was warned before I went though that it depends on what cook is there. Apparently there is a two week rotation between too cooks and one of them is really bad. I guess I scored because not only was the restaurant open (many were not due to being off season) but the food was hot, plentiful and well spiced! My husband said its the best Kung Pao he has had.. My favorite Kung Pao is else where but it was good for sure. I hope that I would eat here again and get the same cook. read more

We sized up Chen's after a fun, wet windy weathered day of nonstop fun. My daughter requested rice for dinner and since our accommodations are closely situated to this establishment we couldn't pass it up. Quick service. They sport some really nice uniforms and the decorations are very simple and inviting. First we got the large Fried Shrimp appetizers and it arrived quickly. Dolly ordered a Whiskey Sour which she quickly stated 'its the worst Whiskey Sour I've ever had' but managed to get it down. I ordered the Beef Broccoli and it was divine. Killer place and walking distance from most Northern area of Long Beach Motels makes this place definitely returnable. read more

Great inexpensive Chinese joint. General Tso and managers special beef fried to perfection- best general tso I've had in awhile. Great wonton soup- everything in it. The kung pao chicken was spicy and tasty. The tomato beef chow yuk was fairly sweet but not bad. Somehow we ended up with 3 huge boxes of rice. The salad was good. The eggrolls were just ok. Still it was nice takeout dinner we could eat back at the hotel with our dogs. I would eat there again. It's not the best Chinese food but is fairly good for the area. read more

We ate here and enjoyed it very much .... the Staff was very friendly & accommodating .. food was fresh and very good. The Shrimp was too die for . Yummy! ! I ordered the teriyaki chicken special with steamed rice and vegetables. It was unlike any teriyaki chicken I had ever had. Very fatty and strange tasting. I took one bite and spit it out because of the strange, fatty texture and odd taste. The server never asked how our food was (we came in 1/2 hour before closing so they were busy trying to clean up) so when I walked up to the front to pay I told the server I did not eat the food and asked for them to take it off the bill. The server then went to the kitchen and asked someone, I'm assuming the manager or owner, if she could take it off the bill. Some heated words were exchanged and the server marched out to the table to grab my plate to show whomever was in the kitchen that I did not eat the food. She brought the food to the kitchen and showed the person the plate. The server then came back to the register and said that "He" refused to take the meal off the bill. I usually go out of my way to find decent Asian cuisine. The staff seemed friendly enough. The food is mediocre at best. I thought since we came during the off season (which was quite busy) and didn't see many cars it would be an opportunity to test out the food. The three of us didn't finish our meal (we had take out). I ordered the Mongolian beef and thought it was a disaster. The BBQ pork was bad, crab cheese wontons without the crab, and the egg roll is a horrible rendition of a burrito. I do hope they can improve. It would be nice to actually enjoy the food and the staff seems nice enough. Shame on them, however. read more

Excellent chinese food. We had their family style dinner (B) tonight. Every dish was delicious and full of flavor. We especially like their beef chow mein. You cannot stop by long beach & not eat there. There's nothing really too special here. I've ate here over 10 times & never have been disappointed. The service is always great!! We've eaten at Chen's, had the takeout as well.. The food is always better when you eat it there, however if you have to get it to go it's still pretty good. I have noticed that sometimes the food is really good and other times it's sorta 'iffy'. I'm not sure what the difference is. My hubby really likes the kung pao and BBQ pork, i've had better 'fried' chicken dishes at other chinese restaurants there's is ok, the Crab wontons are really good and so are the fried prawns if you eat there, to go they are mushy and disappointing. Wish they had something besides the pretty plain fried chicken (crispy almond chicken) and the one drenched in sweet and sour sauce, there needs to be something not drowning in sauce .. but not dry. Still a few more things to try so i know we will be going back read more

Choemein was all bean sprouts, not my favorite. Lemon chicken sauce was okay however chicken overcooked. Egg roll was over breaded and disproportionately stuffed with bean sprouts. Crab puffs were very good. read more

Most of the food was flavorless. We ordered sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken, and almond chicken chow mein. The almond chicken comes without any sauce. Might be good for small children. The sweet and sour chicken sauce was very bland. Almost no flavor. The chow mein was the best of what we ordered but it was mostly celery. The egg drop soup has lots of veggies in it. The general tso, chef special beef, walnut prawns, foo young, almond friend chicken, and chow miens are all favorites. It depends on the nice. The soups and Barbeque pork are very good as well. If you want traditional Americanized Chinese food without much in the way of interesting flavors, this might be the place for you. This is definitely my parents' Chinese-thick fried breading, sweet and sour sauce that is just sweet, and no heat at all in what was supposed to be spicy. We had six different dishes and everyone at the table felt they were just so so (except the combination #1, which was pretty much not edible). Our server was nice but the service was uneven...never offered tea, we had to ask for, then wait for silverware and water and one meal was brought out much later than the others. They also messed up on the bill. We have been here a number of times over the years but will likely not go back-not worth $100 for meals, one appetizer and 2 soft drinks that they told us we would have to pay to have refilled. Wish I could rate them higher but 3 stars is generous for the meal we had today. read more
