Been on my "to try" list for years. Finally I did it. We were actually headed for Gus' to fill up on some delicious fried chicken before heading over to Cirque Du Soleil's Kooza, but, you know how parking can be. We decided to come here. We walked in and stood like deer in the head lights while we waited for the hostess to seat us. Once we were seated we had time to actually memorize the menu. It got to the point that when another customer walked past our table, I asked him to bring us some water. He laughed and actually did!! Yes. Service was sloooooooooow. They had some good "old country" aka honky tonk playing so that made waiting more enjoyable. When the waiter finally arrived for drinks we were like "hey man, we're ready to order". No lunch deals on the menu. That was disappointing. We asked if they had a catfish basket deal and yes was the answer. Four fillets with fries. I got mine sub fries for corn nuggets. The catfish was just ok for me. Nothing special. Nothing I would drive out of my way for. The batter was a bit rubbery and lacked of spice. Tabasco really helped this out. The corn nuggets were also good, but, after the third one I was like ugh. Something about creamed corn. I would definitely eat here again, but, not go out of my way to do so. IMO Paw-Paws in Bastrop has the best catfish you're gonna find around these parts. And it is worth the drive. read more

If you have never tried them, I suggest you do in the fashion Cherry Creek offers; served on the thickest-mouthwatering-BLT in town. We happened to be in the area one afternoon and after reading numerous yelp reviews we thought we'd give it a go. First instinct upon entering was to yell 'TAWAAANNDA,' as no one came to our direct aid, we stood puzzled waiting for a member of the staff to come to our attention. How fortunate for us? We scored a less than personable waitress--2 stars from the start; took our order and went on her merry (or not) way. The atmosphere would made Gramps proud, I can only characterize it as 'quaint,' and 'fishy,' filled with an older 'local,' crowd, but it sure gave your eyes something to look at while your mouth was too busy drooling waiting for food. The prices were predictable, not too bad, and it wasn't overly crowded. I had seen the yelp photos for the BLT and knew it was what I wanted before I even opened the menu--but needless to say the photos don't depict the size of that sucker--it's so massive you'll need to formulate a plan on how to fit it in your mouth. Our order came out quick enough--was tasty, at least mine was...my girlfriend is the avid fish eater (not I), she was less than pleased with her meal--but plans to give them another shot. My BLT was put together with some of the thickest bacon I'd ever seen--beginning to think the pig was severely obese when it went to the 'farm,' but it was d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s, in artery clogging fashion. Always a fan of this place. Among the BEST catfish in the Austin area, if not the best! We have been visiting this establishment for years and always are served great food. The ambiance is not exactly for the young and rowdy, its an older place with repeat guests and the staff has remained the same pretty much for years. I remember a few years ago, an elderly woman would walk around table to table to ask if her guests were happy and had everything they needed. It reminded me of those small town restaurants where everyone knows everyone. Lets get to the food.... Appetizer: We always go for the fried mushrooms. These are served whole, not sliced or cut up, and battered in a light breading which is served with a yummy ranch dressing. These are rather large mushrooms too, so be sure to share with a couple friends or you risk filling up before your main dish arrives. My husband usually orders the Po Boy sandwich with a combination of catfish and shrimp. The cornmeal batter is perfectly balanced, light and thin but enough to give it that "fried" yumminess - yet the protein is the spotlight. The fixings on it is fresh and this sandwich is served with crispy seasoned fries or sweet potato waffle fries, both of which are good. The po boy is a cheap meal for under $10 and well worth it - come hungry! The Tartar sauce... They have both regular and a spicy Jalapeno variety. My daughter is a huge fan of the jalapeno tartar sauce, and usually requests half a dozen lil sides of it. Do not let the green color throw you off though - it is delicious. If you prefer the less spicy variety - then the regular tartar sauce is just as amazing. I ordered just the 6 pieces of catfish with a side of green beans. The catfish here is pretty dang amazing, they are not paper thin like so many other places offer. They are decently sized where you can enjoy the fish and not just the corn meal breading. The green beans are the country type, with bacon and onions - which I am a big fan of. While I would order again, I have had better beans at other places. It cost only $6.99 for a big plate of 6 pieces of catfish and hush puppies, the beans were a buck more. For under $8 I had a huge plate of food that was delicious! My daughters usual meal is the small catfish plate which includes 3 pieces of catfish and a sides to go with it. She is rather picky, so she always subs the sides that it comes with - and they are happy to accommodate this for her. She loves their onion rings which are huge and lightly battered and likes their sweet potato waffle fries. She is also a big fan of their hush puppies, which are pretty dang awesome! I think they may change out their oil frequently which helps with the fresh tastiness of their food options. They also use really good quality catfish and serve good portions. it seems like every time I order they mess up on my order. Grilled fish is always over cooked and the service has gone downhill. I recently placed an online order and when my husband went went to pick it up, he received the wrong order. He nicely told the guy working and the old man immediately flipped on him. (I guess he was mad because he package the order Or was already having a bad day) I was on the phone the entire time and I heard the conversation. The old guy started yelling at my husband saying that this is the order that I placed with him. My husband said no sir this is not what we eat /or placed and we would just like the order corrected. The older man working puts his hand in my husbands face and says you need to get off your phone right now and speak to me!!! My husband then said I'm speaking to my wife to confirm the order. The man says you're out of here. We don't want you here anyway! Get out! My husband says if you're going to discriminate against me you need to give me a refund first. At first the Older guy says no and then my husband stated just because I am in basketball shorts wearing a do rag does not mean that I am uneducated. This is my off day and I'll be more than happy to contact my attorney if you do not give me a refund. At that point the older gentleman gives my husband a refund and yells at him to leave the restaurant. Crazy thing is my husband does not raise his voice the entire time. I will never return back to this place and will post reviews everywhere that they discriminate. When Lent began, I was searching everywhere to find a decent place that had some respectable fried seafood. I finally stumbled upon this little gem while using Yelp to help guide me. It was pretty difficult, there really aren't many good places to get fried seafood without being Long John Silver's or a "upscale restaurant" This place is pretty deep into South Austin, close to the suburbs. As my friend and I walked up on a Friday evening, this place was pretty packed! It was the first Friday during Lent so no doubt, this place would be swarmed in Catholics avoiding meat at all costs. The restaurant had set up a makeshift bar with a young lady selling beers for about $3 a piece outside the bar. This place isn't a full dive but it's pretty close, it sort of makes you full like you're in the hull of a ship. We started our meal with an order of fried crawfish, this thing was DELICIOUS. These crawfish tails were FREAKY big, not as big as a shrimp but pretty close. I was pretty impressed by the crispyness and size of some of the crawfish they brought. Soon our entrees came out, I got a combo plate with some fried catfish and fried oysters. Perfection! Pure fried perfection. Perfect crunch with the cornmeal batter. Succulent catfish, still moist and flaky. The oysters were wonderful too, not fishy but completely fresh tasting. Hushpuppies were nice and fluffy. So my wife and I were looking for an affordable seafood place and so we were suggested to try a catfish parlor of sorts. Stumbling through yelp, eventually I found this place, a neat little restaurant in the corner of a strip mall, a hidden gem out of the way. The interior is what I'd imagine an Austin catfish parlor to look like whatever that means. Food wise, it's good. Clean fresh seafood and really good potato sides. I got a half catfish, half oyster poboy (its the same price to split!) and the potato chips - wife got the big combo plate with the ribs, shrimp, catfish, cole slaw and green beans. I really liked the oyster sandwich - good crusty bread, creamy oysters, all fried to perfection. For the catfish sandwich, you'll need to use a bit of the tartar sauce on the side to help it go down, but its really good.The chips are homemade - they're stellar and full heartily recommend it. Hushpuppies here are really good as well: not dense, crisp. Actually all the fried stuff here has no trace of grease - big win considering how often that is a problem with catfish/seafood. Stick with just the catfish and oysters though. Shrimp is a bit too bready and the ribs are not that tender. Cole slaw and beans were meh. But everything else is big thumbs up :) read more

This is an old-school style catfish joint. I expected that man sitting across from me in the sear-sucker suit with bow-tie to put on a straw hat as he walked out the door. I was pleasantly surprised by the decor, from the outside I expected the place to be more run down. For appetizers we had Fried Green Tomatoes and a Bowl of Pups (hush puppies). The pups were not the best I have ever had, but still pretty tasty and came with butter and tartar sauce. My pups were followed with fish tacos. I love that you have the option of grilled, blackened or fried. I recommend the blackened. It was a lighter entree compared to all the other friend fare on the menu. There are quite a few of the couples who would go during the week with their families and the owner always recognized us! Our church has used Cherry Creek for catering in the past. And most there today are leaders in the church! So, that may stop! We will not be returning after today. From the moment we arrived, we were treated VERY rudely. The new owner/ manager acted like it was a bother that there were 19 of us! With no prior notice we were also told we would have to do one check per table! REALLY? Not even by couples? Also, as each started arriving he would not let us be seated until all showed up. There is not a large space for waiting! The table was ready but no one could sit:( Such poor customer service and rudeness on top of it! He made several ugly remarks to different ones. We could see this restaurant was not going to work for us. We informed him we were leaving, to remove us from the list. (The restaurant was not near full, nor were there people waiting!) I have never been a real fried food type of person. I stumbled upon this place because this is where my boyfriend and his family go during Lent and we had a last hoorah dinner for Good Friday. Honestly, it was better then i expected it to be. The catfish was good though I have never had catfish before so I don't have much to compare it to. The hush-puppies are good, a little greasy for my taste, but I ate them all anyway :X lol but the real winner was the fried green tomatoes. Oh my goodness - it was like a piece of fried heaven, no joke. Anyway, the place didn't wow me. The last time I went (not Good Friday) the waiter was a bit inattentive (and it was Monday & pretty slow... he really had no excuse). I must first confess that I am not a fan of most Southern food. I know that in Texas I can be hung for saying so, but I just don't get it. A steak is good enough on it's own. Why must we fry it? Why?!? That being said, for my palate to be sated at any Southern eatery, it must be knock-your-socks-off good. Cherry Creek isn't quite that good, but it is far better than many of the other restaurants in the Austin area who masquerade as home cooking, but are only a step up from cafeteria food. Further, it has a very comfortable feel inside, without looking like they were trying to hard to be comfortable. We were regular customers when we lived closer but we still drive all the way from Hutto when we want good hot freshly prepared catfish and sides. Let's start with the thick meaty catfish filets cooked perfectly and the sides are great too. How great? You can eat the hush puppies here - they are crispy and crunchy on the outside and moist and well seasoned inside. I love their pinto beans and you can afford to because thy don't blow you up! Lol. Where ever you live make the trip when you have out of town visitors - they will love it. This place has THE BEST CATFISH I HAVE EVER TASTED. Like, ohmygoshsogood. The service, however, is not-so-great so I will just comment on the food because even with the bad service, the food is worth it. This weekend was my second time there. That should tell you how good it is the fact that I went down there for it after craving it for months, but never wanting to make the drive. We ordered the Fried Pickles to start, I had them the first time as well because the manager suggested it and raved about them, and these really are the best fried pickles around. And I've had a lot. The thing that separates them from others is the breading. The menu says it's crushed tortilla strips. That makes a WORLD of difference. For my meal I got the Catfish Poboy, as I did the first time, and it was just as great. The bread is amazingly perfect, the catfish was just right, and the tartar sauce was great and just enough to add flavor, but not make everything soggy. Again, the breading is what makes the difference for this catfish also. It isn't too dry like most places and the catfish itself has a great texture and isn't overcooked at all. They even nailed the fries! Everything about the meal was great. Both times. This last time I had my boyfriend with me. Which if you are in a relationship you know means you really get two meals for the price of, well, two meals. But you get to get two things and share, which I like because it helps me taste more of the menu at restaurants. He ordered the Catfish Tacos, fried. I would have traded my entire meal in a heartbeat for his. They were the BEST FISH TACOS I HAVE EVER HAD! The catfish was good, obviously we get that I feel that way, but the pico de galo, ohmygoshthepico. It was SO FRESH and tasted BETTER than most Mexican places I have been. I'm into it. Our waitress, Jessica, was a real gem and I'll ask for her when I return. I ordered the grilled shrimp with salad, green beans, and zucchini subbed for the rice. The kids had chicken fingers, and my dad had the fried catfish platter with onion rings and fries. We also ordered an order of corn nuggets and hush puppies for the table because fuck it - when in Rome. It was all amazing! Including the kids' tendies. The stand outs were the onion rings, hush puppies, green beans (not vegetarian, but WOW), and zucchini. I didn't try the catfish, but my dad loved it. Jessica even understood that my dad likes a delicate balance of half sweet, half unsweet iced tea the second she asked which kind of tea he wanted and he took a breath in to explain. The food was excellent, the atmosphere was kitsch amazing, and Jessica was on the A team. The gumball machine up front was a nice touch too. I'm so glad this is in my neighborhood. Ordered take out yesterday (last time was Father's Day last year) and was VERY disappointed. Ordered trio plate for the first time and small catfish dinner. Called and notified of problem and instead of trying to make issue right I was told that since the 3 large fillets of the catfish in my container were large, they were also supposed to be for trio.....hmmmm??? The price was so reasonable! $8.99 for the catfish dinner (3) pieces of catfish, fries, beans, coleslaw, and 2 hush puppies. The catfish was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The beans and coleslaw were good. I did think it was kind of weird that there were pineapples in the coleslaw. But it really tasted delicious! Make sure to try the jalapeño tartar sauce as well as the regular tartar sauce. I ordered carry out, and expected to have to wait forever. But they told me that it would only take 15 minutes. What was even better, was that I arrived early and it was done. The greeter and server were really nice and there were plenty of parking which I like. The fish is very tender and the shrimp is cooked well. They pour this garlic dipping sauce over it and it also comes with garlic bread. That comes with 2 pork ribs, green beans, coleslaw, and fries and hushuppies (we substituted for onion rings w/ no extra charge). The onion rings are really good here... the plate also comes with deep fried shrimp and catfish. The batter isn't overwhelming, and is great with the red garlic sauce. The pork ribs are nothing special, but everything else was delicious! I have also tried their shrimp plate, which comes with a side of gumbo, green beans and a side salad. The menu online is not really updated with some of the dinner plates they have (none of these are found on their online menu). Definitely coming back here! We arrived late to dinner party and they knew we were coming had put 2 chairs for us and when we arrived and sat down, the manager said we could not order because other people were waiting and we would have to get our own table.
