Wow. I went to this place over 10 years ago to meet my future in law for the very first time since moving to Austin. I know we order a TON of stuff, but honestly couldn't remember what it was, but it was good... I was probably nervous (obvious). Flash forward to today and I got dine out. I called it in and picked it up in 9 minutes. 9 minutes!!!!! and it was yummy fresh, hot and golly gosh darn. I got the catfish, the basic 3 piece, traditional I figured. I LOVED IT!. I usually don't like catfish. I didn't see that black yucky thing you do in"cheap catfish" and it was white and fluffy. I'm not sure what fancy catfish is supposed to feel like but I imagine I ate some really fancy catfish, and I wasn't worthy. After trying the Leander location and being closer to South Austin than Leander, one of my dining companions and I decided to give the original location in South Austin a try. In fact, we mentioned this to our server, Chris. Chris told us that both locations have the same recipes but different owners and maybe different suppliers. Our food was excellent. My dining companion said her fried shrimp basket was better than the Leander location. I tried the chicken fried steak finger basket. I've always been a fan of Dairy Queen's "country basket," but I've found a new standard. These steak fingers looked and tasted like an actual chicken fried steak cut into strips. And the accompanying gravy was first rate too. We both enjoyed the onion ring appetizer as well. What really set our meal apart though was Chris. She was friendly and efficient. Food was and is always delicious but tell me why I and every customer who picks up food is charged $2.50 for a packaging fee (10%)!? Why would you pass that fee on to your customers and not tell them? Instead, you give them a non-itemized receipt so they can't see how sneaky and underhanded you're being. I called and spoke to Wes, the manager, and he stated ALL customers are aware and ok with this practice. Were you aware? Tell me, if you saw a charge for "Packaging", wouldn't you like to be made aware of this fee? No where on their menu or website does it specify this charge/fee. it seems like every time I order they mess up on my order. Grilled fish is always over cooked and the service has gone downhill. I recently placed an online order and when my husband went went to pick it up, he received the wrong order. He nicely told the guy working and the old man immediately flipped on him. (I guess he was mad because he package the order Or was already having a bad day) I was on the phone the entire time and I heard the conversation. The old guy started yelling at my husband saying that this is the order that I placed with him. My husband said no sir this is not what we eat /or placed and we would just like the order corrected. The older man working puts his hand in my husbands face and says you need to get off your phone right now and speak to me!!! My husband then said I'm speaking to my wife to confirm the order. The man says you're out of here. We don't want you here anyway! Get out! My husband says if you're going to discriminate against me you need to give me a refund first. At first the Older guy says no and then my husband stated just because I am in basketball shorts wearing a do rag does not mean that I am uneducated. This is my off day and I'll be more than happy to contact my attorney if you do not give me a refund. At that point the older gentleman gives my husband a refund and yells at him to leave the restaurant. Crazy thing is my husband does not raise his voice the entire time. I will never return back to this place and will post reviews everywhere that they discriminate. It's not the first time that we walk in there and we are treated differently than other customers right in front of my face by this older guy. I would not recommend going there if you are a minority. I have never been so disappointed in a restaurant! We have a group of friends who have gone out to eat together, after church, for years. We have a list for a year of where we're going each Sunday!Cherry Creek Catfish has been on that rotation, until today. In the past, the former owner had been so welcoming to us and when he was in would come by to visit. There are quite a few of the couples who would go during the week with their families and the owner always recognized us! Our church has used Cherry Creek for catering in the past. And most there today are leaders in the church! So, that may stop! We will not be returning after today. From the moment we arrived, we were treated VERY rudely. The new owner/ manager acted like it was a bother that there were 19 of us! With no prior notice we were also told we would have to do one check per table! REALLY? Not even by couples? Also, as each started arriving he would not let us be seated until all showed up. There is not a large space for waiting! The table was ready but no one could sit:( Such poor customer service and rudeness on top of it! He made several ugly remarks to different ones. We could see this restaurant was not going to work for us. We informed him we were leaving, to remove us from the list. (The restaurant was not near full, nor were there people waiting!) One of the men in our group said, 'you do realize you're loosing 400.00-500.00?' He said, that's fine!! We are not a rowdy, loud group. We are 70 ,and up, years old! Always a fan of this place. Among the BEST catfish in the Austin area, if not the best! We have been visiting this establishment for years and always are served great food. The ambiance is not exactly for the young and rowdy, its an older place with repeat guests and the staff has remained the same pretty much for years. I remember a few years ago, an elderly woman would walk around table to table to ask if her guests were happy and had everything they needed. It reminded me of those small town restaurants where everyone knows everyone. Lets get to the food.... Appetizer: We always go for the fried mushrooms. These are served whole, not sliced or cut up, and battered in a light breading which is served with a yummy ranch dressing. These are rather large mushrooms too, so be sure to share with a couple friends or you risk filling up before your main dish arrives. My husband usually orders the Po Boy sandwich with a combination of catfish and shrimp. The cornmeal batter is perfectly balanced, light and thin but enough to give it that "fried" yumminess - yet the protein is the spotlight. The fixings on it is fresh and this sandwich is served with crispy seasoned fries or sweet potato waffle fries, both of which are good. The po boy is a cheap meal for under $10 and well worth it - come hungry! The Tartar sauce... They have both regular and a spicy Jalapeno variety. My daughter is a huge fan of the jalapeno tartar sauce, and usually requests half a dozen lil sides of it. Do not let the green color throw you off though - it is delicious. If you prefer the less spicy variety - then the regular tartar sauce is just as amazing. I ordered just the 6 pieces of catfish with a side of green beans. The catfish here is pretty dang amazing, they are not paper thin like so many other places offer. They are decently sized where you can enjoy the fish and not just the corn meal breading. The green beans are the country type, with bacon and onions - which I am a big fan of. While I would order again, I have had better beans at other places. It cost only $6.99 for a big plate of 6 pieces of catfish and hush puppies, the beans were a buck more. For under $8 I had a huge plate of food that was delicious! My daughters usual meal is the small catfish plate which includes 3 pieces of catfish and a sides to go with it. She is rather picky, so she always subs the sides that it comes with - and they are happy to accommodate this for her. She loves their onion rings which are huge and lightly battered and likes their sweet potato waffle fries. She is also a big fan of their hush puppies, which are pretty dang awesome! I think they may change out their oil frequently which helps with the fresh tastiness of their food options. They also use really good quality catfish and serve good portions. This is definitely one of our favorite places in Austin to eat catfish! read more
