The owner is awful. He was yelling & insulting one of his young employees in front of a a store full of customers. Poor kids was almost in tears. I went up to him & suggested maybe he should have pulled the employee aside to talk to him instead of yelling at him in front of everyone. This owner lives in a gorgeous mansion down the road. His shop serves decent bagels, with Spanish-speaking staff. This dingy place has not been re-done in 20 years or more (I remember this wallpaper). Alot of people come through, like zombies, for a decent toasted bagel. Don't order the latte. The sandwiches seem expensive. The bag of day-old choc muffins look a nice sweet-fix for teens. Why is that dirty rag hanging on a nail over the juice case? Please, boss man, have some new eyes look your establishment once in awhile. Or spend $5k on new paint and steam cleaning. Then us moms will come back in. read more

I would hardly say I am a bagel connoisseur, but being from NJ I have some experience. Sad to say but today was my last day at Chesapeake McLean. The bagels are sub par at best, but customer service much worse. I come every AM during the week at the same time, so I would consider myself a good customer. Not anymore!!! I have been getting a bagel with just egg. The price was close to $5 w tax. I was saying that just doesn't seem right being that a Bagel w cheese is the same price. They insisted it was correct!! The next day a different woman charged a bagel w egg on the side and it was a dollar less, success!!! The manager was there today and I was explaining to her how the other woman had done it and she was arguing and telling me "this is not how we do it" Wait what, Not how u do it? Having lived on the West Coast for 4 years I was so excited to find REAL bagels!! Chewy, doughy, bagels. Lots of selection for bagels (including SALT!) and different variations of cream cheese. I bought 1/2 dozen and we have been enjoying them from the comfort of our home. Love it. read more

I lived in New York. These guys make bagels the old school way. From scratch. Unlike competing frozen bagel fakeries they actually proof overnite and cook them in a kettle. In fact the salads are from scratch and so are the spreads. The owner is an old school hands on guy. Tells me that none of the available cold cuts the suppliers sell are good enough, not even the premium grades, so they roast their own meats, and slice them up for their sandwiches because if the boss won't eat something himself he won't serve it up. They even make their own dessert banana and date/nut bread, again, from scratch. You don't get fresh like this, not even from your Mama. I travel a lot, but when I am in town I always stop by. Bagels are great and friendly staff. Can the store, however, rethink how the eggwiches are made -- looks like they just use the empty plastic cream cheese containers to microwave the eggs. Think that is a health hazard as more info comes out on how bad it is to microwave most plastic containers -- and if they are using the cream cheese containers, unlikely those containers are even microwave safe. read more

I live in the District but had an errand to run in McLean and needed bagels for the weekend. I'd never been here before (or to any of what appear to be branches.) Big disappointment. I'm surprised no other reviewer mentioned that there's a lot of hole, not much bagel. I haven't seen such scrimping on bagels since...well...ever. Maybe it's their signature or maybe they're cutting costs. The flavor, quality, taste, etc weren't bad, compliment from me since I've lived on both coasts and eaten more than my fair share of legendary bagels. Yes, the staff was aloof and pretty disinterested in clients, even at 2pm. One staffer had the door of the glass case near the front door wide open while she did some restocking and she was unperturbed that any of us trying to exit had trouble getting around it. Something else that was frustating: Unless you're 5'10" or taller, you aren't going to see over the counter's ledge and know what bagels are available. And I'm not. It's fine to say that the overhead board listed all the varieties but by 2pm, many choices are gone. The upper rack had the faux-bagels (the improbable sweet ones) but the regular old stuff - poppy, sesame, etc. - were on the bottom. And hopping, leaning over and walking the length of the counter to see if I could see make me feel like an idiot. If they have any interest in moving customers through the line quickly, not letting them see what they might want will hold things up. Not going back unless it's urgent bagel time. read more

I stopped here for a quick breakfast before a meeting. I got a focaccia egg sandwich. Super hot, but I think from the microwave. Eggs had that spongy texture. Bread was chewy. Maybe the bagels are better. Staff was efficient enough. read more

I used to work at a chesapeak bagel bakery here in Texas about fifteen years ago. Around that time the company switched to frozen pre-made bagels instead of the fresh ones made in house. Very different flavor as you all have incountered. read more

Insane experience today in this place. Went in for a toasted bagel and soda. On way out of restroom to get in line, lady at register asked if she could take my order. Everything great so far. Takes order. I wait 9 minutes -- no food ready yet -- mind you it's just a simple toasted bagel. I go to the counter to ask the hard to understand Asian woman if the order was ready. Asked me "where" I placed my order. I said at the register with the woman at the end who asked me what I'd like. She curtly told me I needed to place the order with her. Well, excuse me, how could I be so stupid as to place my order with the lady at the register who asked me what I'd like. Nonetheless, she then asked WHEN I placed the order -- I showed her my timestamped receipt indicating 9 minutes earlier. Said they hadn't put the order in yet because I didn't place it with her. I told her it's not my problem who I place the order with -- once placed it needs to get toasted and that's that. Here's where the fun starts. A dude walks up to me and gets in my face telling me to be more polite and respectful to the workers -- kept repeating that they are hard working people and I needed to be more respectful. Mind you, I hadn't been disrespectful at all -- just told the lady that it was not my problem that they hadn't put the bagel through the toaster yet and it wasn't ready, rather than her blaming me for "ordering in the wrong place". I tell the guy to mind his business and get out of my face...he goes off on a rant about how he owns the store, and that I'm to leave and never come back. Hey, no problem idiot, happy to leave, just as soon as I get my refund for the food I never received. The guy then proceeds to yell at me from behind the counter that I am bi polar! Uh, I don't think one is bi polar for pointing out to a rude, semi English speaking woman behind the counter that it's not MY fault they didn't put MY order in and get it out on time, AFTER I PAID FOR IT and was issued a receipt. It took all the self control I could muster not to escalate the situation and tell the moron owner of this place to either shut his trap completely or he's welcome to step outside to discuss the situation. I'll give it a couple of days, and if the whopping $5.02 that I paid isn't refunded to my account, I'll pay another visit to this location to have a little discussion with the aforementioned owner who seems to think it's ok for his clearly frustrated, underpaid, pseudo-English speaking employees to treat customers rudely after they screw up. My advice to this jackass is very simple -- correct your business little fella, and don't go popping off to customers who could clearly squash you like a grape if it came to it. And if you ever see you in a local grocery store, I look forward to having a little chat and humiliating you in public. read more

I like their bagels and think the cream cheese is very good, however, the lack of customer service is just crazy. Today I ordered a whole wheat everything bagel, toasted with plain cream cheese. The person helping me got a regular everything bagel. I corrected her, but then she proceeded to keep asking me, plain cheese? And I said yes, plain cream cheese (must have been at least 3 times she asked this). When I finally opened up my order when I got to work I had a whole wheat everything bagel with a slice of melted cheese on it. Not cream cheese, cheese. Luckily the cheese was of such a poor quality I could peel it off and just eat the bagel. The time before this though was the worst. I went to pick up breakfast for my team meeting and when I asked the woman behind the counter what type of muffins they had, she started listing them off. The woman behind me asked her a question about the muffins and the woman who was helping me then started helping the woman BEHIND me in line. When I finally got her to come back to me, I asked for the muffins I wanted, she then stated that one of them was no longer available. When I pointed out she had said it was, she told me she gave it to the woman BEHIND me. I couldn't believe it! Absolutely no concept of customer service. I think part of my issue today can be chopped up to language barriers, however, this was just plain rude. After two bad experiences I will not be returning. There are other places that have good bagels and cream cheese with actual customer service. read more
