Another afternoon, another craving for something sweet to share.  This time we opted to try Sweetbites.  The cinnamon rolls are one of their best sellers and we can understand why.  Although chocolate will always be my true love, I have to remember that there are lots of other really great flavors and cinnamon is one of them.  The buns had just the right amount of sticky to flaky and lots of cinnamon flavor.  Our second pick was the custard filled cream puff.  It was also good but the cinnamon bun was the favorite.  Sweetbites also has lots of savory options which we will need to try on another visit.  Along with the desserts, we had the white chocolate mocha latte which was fine.  The staff were very helpful and upbeat and the café was very clean with seating both inside and out.  There is a big parking lot behind the office building where Sweetbites is located. read more

The hot dog itself is juicy, grilled to a perfect crisp in the panini press, and the bun is toasted just right. The toppings really pull it all together-- Get it with ALL toppings. Tiny cafe at the corner of the INOVA building. It's a narrow corridor with few seats indoors and a couple outdoor tables. I stumbled upon this as we tried to find new brunch places in our area - it's less than a 5 min drive from home and we can bring our fur babies. It's actually a bit too cold now to be outside but I did notice they have ceiling furnaces so hopefully they'll turn those on soon. The food is fresh and tastes homemade. Some of their things seem to sell out which is understandable at its small size. Their coffee is delicious and the staff have been pleasant to deal with. Their bakery items are so good! I ask them to heat it up and they happily obliged. I always get their low carb feta Turkey avocado wrap and it's never failed to fill me up. The simple cheese panini also seems to be my mom's go to now- she loves how "clean" everything tastes. I have to agree! I'll be back to try their other items. read more

The Cinnabon was so damn good, I plan on trying the one with pecans next. And the breakfast burrito was hot and filling. I left my appointment and was starving and wanted a quick bite before a ventured on with my journey. This spot did the job. I visited my friend during lunch, who works upstairs. I had already ate my lunch but didn't want to sit there awkwardly so she recommended the bakery downstairs. I got a blueberry muffin, and it was really good. I'm a picky muffin eater so I wasn't expecting much. The sugar crust was crunchy and sweet, paired well with the muffin cake. The cupcake was filled with a lot of blueberries, they definitely do not skimp out! I noticed they had a lot of different dessert options and also serve coffee/lattes along with lunch items. The food over there is too overpriced and it doesn't even taste that good. A pre-made sandwich will cost you upwards of $15. Not to mention the $3 cupcakes are too greasy. The unique selection of sweet and savory treats is impressive and always keeps me guessing! There's always so much to choose to from and the daily selection is always different. My favorite sweet treats: tangy Key Lime Pie, Pina Colada Cupcakes, scrumptious Chocolate Chip Cookie, slice of heaven strawberry cream cake, moist lemon poppy seed bread, decadent S'mores brownie and Peanut butter brownie, and best of all Brookie (brownie + cookie). The pastries are fresh, moist, and truly a sweet bite! The only things that I wouldn't recommend is the dry and stale quiches, focaccia bread, and vanilla, chocolate, and cookie dough cupcakes. As cupcakes were the bread and butter of the Sweetbites food truck, they are a side piece at the bakery and nice to see the shop expand with a variety of sweet and savory pastries, breakfast burritos, and sandwiches. The cafe is now open on Saturdays too (8am - 3pm), excited to bring my hubby! Sandra, the owner, is passionate and just as sweet as her decadent baked goods. This a small cafe with a lot of baked goods! The selection is wide consisting from strawberry tarts to quiches to croissants and cookies. The chocolate chip scone is pretty good, tasting like a chocolate chip cookie with the texture of a biscuit.. the strawberry scone is my favorite but it's maybe a once a week occurrence on the menu! A slight strawberry flavor with a crumbly texture ~so gooood. I wish they had fruit flavored scones more often tho :/ I came here for lunch with a friend and we both got pesto paninis which were crispy but a little too salty for me. After reading the good reviews, I decided to give them a try. Good choice! I ordered and paid online and it was super easy. My daughter was thrilled and said everything was delicious. This shop made me sad :( I was excited to find a nice little cafe - quickly soured on those sentiments LITERALLY. My sandwich was on bread that was more pungent than sourdough! It crumbled in my hands & def not was beyond stale. I tried a lemon bar & got a mouth full of bitter - it tasted like one large lemon rind, pithy and pungent. Little hidden spot tucked away in the heart of McLean. Stumbled upon it after a doctor's visit when we saw the sign in the elevator lobby and smelled something good down the hallway. Nice variety of food items & baked goods, from paninis to home-made biscuits, burritos, cupcakes, and even chili! Tried a turkey and cheese panini, biscuit sandwich with turkey sausage egg & cheese, and a lemon bar, and everything tasted pretty solid. The biscuit especially is HUGE and can tell it's home-made with the nice golden outside but fluffiness on the inside. The price is a little on the higher side for the full-meal selections, but the baked goods and drinks are your standard cafe/bakery prices. They also don't have a whole lot of seating (just 5 or 6 tables and some high-stool seats against the window), so maybe plan to take it to-go. Will definitely be back to try some of the pie and also that breakfast burrito. Overall, if you're looking for a casual breakfast or quick dessert you should check this place out! read more

I ordered a green salad recently at this cafe and began to read my book while waiting for my order. The salad arrived and as I began to eat, all I could taste was the bitterness of the greens. I set it aside, throughly annoyed. A woman sitting at another table was doing paperwork and I asked if she was the owner. She replied that she was. I told her how bitter the greens were and suggested using romaine lettuce. She agreed that the greens were more bitter this time of the year but that her customers preferred the more nutritious greens. I told her I couldn't eat the salad and proceeded to leave. She didn't say anything else and never offered to refund my $10 order or even to offer something else. A total disappointment at this cafe and I will no longer eat there. read more

This place is a hidden gem in McLean! Every time I walk in there's a smile behind the counter waiting for me. All of their baked goods (cinnamon bun, morning bun, cookies, biscuits, scones, breads, etc) are absolutely fantastic and really fresh- except maybe on a Friday afternoon when everything's about to be put away for the weekend. (Come in on a Monday or Wednesday morning for fresh baked croissants- could be more often but that's when I get them!). Everything there is made by them in-house. It's such a delight to get fresh pastries (unlike starbucks with them in the back ready to be taken out of the package). The owner likes to talk to the customers and she's so nice- it feels like a small town when you walk in there. They even have sandwiches for lunch. I was skeptical about the sandwiches wrapped in the refrigerator in the front, but the workers say they're made and put out throughout the day, I've even seen them walk it out once or twice. (I've gone maybe 10 times so far?). The first time or two I was there I was annoyed with the slower-than-average service, but then I realized that there are 1-2 people making all of the hot sandwiches, coffee drinks, and taking orders- it's really fast when you end up realizing that most starbucks have 4-5 workers!! The parking is really hard in the middle of the day, but honestly worth it. The only bad point I'd want to make is that it takes a while to be able to order/get your food in a rush. But the best point I have is that the sandwiches are always so fresh- either from the refrigerator or if it was made custom, and the tuna salad and egg salad are amazing- you should try them. read more

I found this little hidden gem after leaving an ENT appointment. They are in the same building. It's quaint and quiet. I've gone about 4 times since my first visit. They have a variety of pastries and desserts and even serve breakfast sandwiches and coffee. Their cinnamon rolls are TO DIE FOR!! Absolutely amazing!! I love myself a Cinnabon but these things are far better. In my frequent visits, everything is always fresh and seemingly made in-house daily. I've tried the cinnamon rolls with and without pecans, the lemon-blueberry coffee cake, the lemon drop cookies and the chocolate chip cookies. All amazing!!! The lemon drop cookie reminded me of tea cakes my neighbor use to make for me when I was a little girl. They are so delightful with a cup of tea! It's hidden and only open Monday-Friday from like 7am-5pm being in an office building but it's worth it. Check them out. The reason for 4 stars is because the attendants seem really young and a bit unaware. Very sweet and kind, but young. They were out of cinnamon rolls one morning I inquired about more and one girl told me later in the afternoon. Another told me they would not have any more. I inquired about purchasing an entire pan of rolls for my office and they could not tell me the price. It was like "uuum, I'm not sure. I think...." which doesn't work well for patrons. I feel like I've stepped into Europe for a brief moment as I've entered this little bakery/cafe. It is a quaint little establishment inside of an office building that you might not know is here if you hadn't had to come to the building. They always have an amazing selection of bakery treats and small-sized quaint lunches. The customer service is awesome and there's a flare of Italy with the Illy coffee they serve. Since I have appointments in this office I have stopped in two or three times now and always had a great experience. Sweetbites is a small little locally-owned cafe and bakery that has been around since 2010. It is located in the INOVA Medical building, right next to the McLean post office. They have breakfast items (such as seasonal scones, breakfast biscuits, muffins, chocolate banana bread, etc.), sandwiches (such as classic chicken salad, roasted vegetable, turkey and swiss, etc.), salads, soups, freshly-baked desserts (specialty cakes, layer cakes, cookies, tarts, etc.), and illy coffee/espresso. Our little group ordered an assortment of desserts: a a Cookies & Cream cupcake (moist yellow cake topped with a light Oreo-infused frosting with a halved Oreo as a topper; this was moist and tasty); an Orange Drop Cookie (a chunky sugar cookie with some orange flavor infused within); a slice of Apple, Pear & Cranberry Crisp pie (this was super delicious, being filled with thinly-sliced apples, chunks of pear, and whole cranberries, topped with a yummy crumb top - definitely tasted like a gourmet pie!); a Blueberry Muffin (with some raw sugar on top, this was made with molasses and honey with whole juicy blueberries - not too sweet and nicely moist); a Chocolate-Chunk cookie (filled with bittersweet chocolate chunks and maldon sea salt, this wasn't a 'warm' cookie, but when you bite into it, the chocolate chunks were melty!); and, a Chocolate scone (as scones usually have a sugary top, this chocolate chip scone was a nice treat - it was not dry but actually soft with a crunchy exterior; not too sweet and great with coffee). For drinks, we tried the Macchiato Caramello (with half and half; an espresso blended with rich caramel sauce and steamed milk, topped with whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel - this was a nice hot beverage that went well with the desserts), and a Dulce de Leche Shakerato (an espresso with caramel and milk, shaken with ice; this was more like a frapuccino that was perfectly sweet and refreshing). The cafe itself is small, and there are a few tables to enjoy your treats/drinks. There was only one employee/barista who was working, and he was friendly! The unisex bathroom is located just outside the back door, as it's of the main building's use. Sweetbites has officially made my TOP bakery list. Holy moly yummy scone-y! You know how hard it is to find good scones? The kind that doesn't crumble and leaves your mouth as dry as the Sarahan desert? Yes, very hard. So you have to understand my excitement here. I'm beyond elated when I bit into their strawberry scone! Crumbles just right and oh so moist. Each bite melts in my mouth, and I've made a mistake of not pairing this scone perfection with a cup of coffee. Scones are one of those difficult baked good to achieve. Since they got this right, I'm highly confident in their other baked items. We left bringing one of the pumpkin pie (with such a plump filling) and the ham & cheese bread for tomorrow's breakfast. I can't wait to bite into the next goodness. It'll be quite the challenge to stop myself from digging into it tonight! They serve illy coffee here so you know you'll be getting delicious coffee! The interior is fun, clean, and modern. The perfect spot for a quick bite or work in. There is also free wifi available. I love small cafés but this place was extremely disappointing. First they didn't have a lot of what was on the menu listed online, and not only that the prices for a sandwich were three dollars more than what was on the online menu (and they charge a fee for credit). I ordered an Italian Meats sandwich, and they just pulled a pre-made and pre-wrapped sandwich out of the fridge. No way to customize toppings or put any condiments on (fortunately at home I could put on some mustard and dressing). The sandwich was passable but really no better than what I could have bought at 7-11, but three times the price. read more

What keeps sending me back? Gluten-free carrot cake! I ordered it for a wedding and I couldn't get enough so I ordered it for a party and it disappeared.
