I accidentally found this amazing bakery while on a walk in the neighborhood. Part bakery and part mini European grocery store, I perused the items but really only had eyes for the baked goods that day. I also really liked that there were little tables and a countertop so you could hang around and eat there. Service was amazing- the folks behind the counter were lovely and so patient as I decided what items to try. I decided on a Napoleon, an eclair, and some kind of chocolate mousse cookie tart. I can't begin to express how delicious everything was. The creme in the Napoleon and eclair was perfect, and the cookie tart so chocolatey and dense that even I had to consume it in multiple sittings. I'm salivating just thinking about eating these things again! I can't wait to return and try even more baked goods!

Update 26 January 2025: still an amazing bakery. Great options for Valentine's treats as well. Be aware they are super busy on Sunday mornings because they close earlier that day...1pm. Thanks for the tasty pastries! The Heidelberg bakery is everything you could want for German themed desserts and pantry items. This place gets really busy, so be prepared to walk in, grab a ticket, and enjoy looking around or finalizing your shopping list while you wait for your number to be called. Be ready to go when you number is called though because the team at Heidelberg is very efficient, while also being friendly; so do your part by being ready to state the items desired for your order. The desserts I tried were all good. I think my favorite was their éclair, but their cakes with fruit are delicious too. Limited parking is available at the lot in front of the shop and additional parking is available in a lot walking distance down the street. I would definitely come back. Thanks!

was really disappointed with the cakes. They were unbelievably sweet, honestly more sugary than typical American cakes and nothing like authentic German bakery desserts. The Windbeutel was especially bad: instead of the light whipped cream filling you would expect, it was filled with a thick buttercream/icing-like mixture that tasted almost like pure sugar. It completely ruined it for me. Unfortunately, this was not the quality or taste I associate with German pastries at all, as a German myself. Totally ruined the Birthday party and guests.

My cousin's birthday is tomorrow and we are throwing a big party for her which will probably last all day long. Her favorite cake is tres leches and I must agree that it's pure deliciousness. The cake itself isn't the largest cake and considering the number of guests tomorrow, we will probably need to ration the slices for each person. This bakery cuts no corners when it comes to the preparation of their baked products. We've actually shopped at this bakery numerous times, and they've obviously done something right being in business for over 50 years. I would love to try a slice of the cake now and report back about how good it really is, but I've had to remind myself that it's not about me this time. .The bakery is quite large and I'm sure that they have whatever type of cake, pie, or any other bakery products that you're looking for. Baked well!

The bakery I return to time and time again, Heidelberg pastry shop has such a wide variety of pastries, cakes, breads, and other treats. Their pretzels are fantastic, real German style made and perfect right out of the bag. If you want a grab and go breakfast they have great donuts and other pastries. Service is quick, it's all counter service and the staff are great.

This is a lunch review for Heidelberg pastry shop. I've been wanting to try them because I've heard it was a neighborhood gem. They have way more than just pastries. For lunch they have made to order sandwiches with a variety of options like tuna, roast beef, pastrami and more. They also have a ton of bread options. I ordered the Turkey sandwich on Jewish rye bread and got it toasted. It was delicious and filling! The bread was very fresh and flavorful. My order even came with a free piece of cake! Unfortunately the hazelnut cake I chose was too dry for my liking. But overall this was a great lunch. I also appreciated how kind and attentive all of the bakery staff were. I took my food to go, but they have a small area for dining inside. I definitely will be back to try more pastries and breakfast!

A Warm, Welcoming Bakery with European Charm and Irresistible Pastries. Walking into Heidelberg Bakery feels like stepping into a cozy, old-world shop. I was immediately greeted by smiling staff, and I loved seeing how diverse and welcoming their team was, it truly felt like a family atmosphere. The store itself is full of unique finds. They carry products from Germany (of course) as well as other European countries, and I noticed several items throughout the store marked with 50% off stickers -- a nice surprise! They also have a full deli section, and during my visit, plenty of people were coming in for fresh sandwiches and decadent salads. The pastry section is a true highlight -- rows of cookies, delicate pastries, and beautifully decorated cakes, some designed to look like fresh fruit. It's clear that a lot of care and artistry goes into their baked goods. Overall, my visit to Heidelberg Bakery was a wonderful experience. The atmosphere, variety, and quality make it a place I'll absolutely return to next time, I'm coming hungry! Cute bakery serving up lunch items! I ordered the pastrami Reuben and a slice of carrot cake. The Reuben was good, but they forgot the Russian dressing on mine. The carrot cake was the star here. Probably the best carrot cake I've had. I also ordered an everything bagel with veggie cream cheese. As you can see from the pictures the amount of shmear was very disappointing. They should be doubling that at the very least. The bagel had good flavor but the texture was off. It didn't have the softness or the right chew. TLDR: get cake.

This pastry shop is the cutest! The service here was great. We paid about $30 for two multipacks of cookies, two slices of cake and a cupcake. Very worth it. Everything we tasted was delicious! It definitely has a pastry shoppe vibe but I loved the fact that they also serve meats, jarred and pickled items, and an assortment of other things. We came in the afternoon and there was quite the selection but I'll return for bread earlier in the day. Will be back!

Busy "Old School" Bakery! Located in Arlington, VA. My friends long-time customers of Heidelberg's invited me to join them on a recent cold Sunday January morning. We arrived the bakery was busy think wall to wall people. The shoppe has a wall windows- daylight streaming in. Limited bar height seating along the windows & a few cafe tables/chairs. The bakery is big-display cases set up in a semicircle. I saw freshly made, donuts, danishes, poppyseed coffee cake slices & chocolate truffles, whole decorated cakes too. They even prepare deli sandwiches to order. Some shelves were bare-pastries sold out. I purchased poppyseed coffee cake, a chocolate frosted brownie. We ordered deli sandwiches for lunch-scored a table too. Delicious sandwiches. Poppyseed coffee cake my favorite-moist, tender cake, fresh lemon flavor. Friendly Professional Customer Service. LOVE Heidelberg! I have been ordering the Black Forest cake from here for a few years now. It is such a delectable cake with cherry brandy, layers of cherries and dark chocolate and whipped cream. A few weeks ago, we threw a party to celebrate the first day of Oktoberfest and had Heidelberg cater. Everything was absolutely excellent. In addition to the staple Black Forest, we also got the Kase Sahne cake - a yellow cake with raspberry jam filling. This is also my new favorite! Such a light and fluffy cake and so much lemon flavor! Yumm. For savory snacks, we got the 2lb Oktoberfest Pretzel and the Das Deutsche Delight. What showstoppers! Both were huge and a hit. The pretzel was surprisingly soft, and so yummy. The Dash Deutsche Delight were layers of German cold cuts with Muenster and Swiss cheeses. I enjoyed building different bites with the various meats and cheeses. It also came with four 1lb breads, so no need to worry about carbs! We also got the small vegetable tray to round out all the bread and meat... The party was for 25 folks, but I think all this could have fed up to 30 as heavy hors d'oeuvres.

When are cake slices included with sandwich orders? I purchased a German cold cut sandwich this week and was not offered anything, but many reviews mention a complimentary slice of cake offered with their sandwiches.

Thank you for coming in to the store! Cakes slices are offered randomly while supplies last when we have extra cake. It is just a special and not always available.

Can you accommodate tree nut allergies?

We do have products that do not have any nuts but are made in the same bakery as the nut products.

But I would think they would have some heads up on conferences in the area just due to their location. Anyways, I bee-lined it here during lunch break to get a sandwich, with only one person in front of me at the counter. I had the ribeye cheese with added onions, peppers, and mushrooms (a $2.00 upcharge), and was told to have a seat and they would bring me the food since I was going to eat in the building lobby where this location is. And right after I ordered groups from the conference started coming in and soon enough the line was 15-20 people. At the end of that line were two co-workers that found this place by getting lost. They (co-workers) took over 20 minutes before they were even able to make it to the counter to order their food, chili and another ribeye cheesesteak sandwich with fries. After they placed their order, I looked inside and realized they were overwhelmed and were probably not going to bring out my sandwich so I went to the pick up area to ask the status of my sandwich. The panic behind the counter was telling me they lost my order. And they had me wait at the counter for my sandwich an additional 4-5 minutes. When I got back to the table I realized that all I got was the ribeye cheese sandwich with shredded iceberg lettuce, no peppers, no onions, no mushrooms. I wanted to go back, but with the panic behind the counter I said I am just glad I got something to eat. The sandwich was good, not bad, with a nice toast on the hoagie bread. About 10 minutes after I got my food, my co-workers got their food and the person that ordered the chili was very disappointed, they said they have had better chili and Wendy's. My other co-worker agreed that the ribeye cheese sandwich was not bad, but the fries were flavorless, like they were not salted. Anyways, maybe management could take initiative in finding out what conferences are occurring in the immediate area and be prepared that first day, because you only have one chance to make a first impression. I am not likely to return to this establishment due to the incorrect order and the slow service. I wish them much success.

Anyone who remembers this place from years ago remembers taking a number, waiting in line, and getting one of the best made-to-order subs in the region? The sandwiches were worth the wait. Maybe the parents moved back to Italia and the kids got stuck with the greedy landlord. Now its just a lazy we don't care overpriced landlord run revenue generator. 6 years after COVID and the subs are still pre-made dying in over stacked pile on the counter. The rolls are often soggy by the time they reach the customer, and the fillings are so thinly layered that each bite feels more like bread sandwich with some after thought what's inside. It screams KEEP THE COST DOWN. What was once a destination deli now feels like a place that's simply too tired to care. The decline reminds me of when DC bartenders traded free pours for jiggers. Less booze, higher prices, and a straight face while handing it to you 30 minutes later with a clever name like Adam's Apple. Same business model here. Less meat, more bread, and somehow we're all expected to clap. The saddest part is that it's still busy, largely because there are fewer and fewer alternatives. The independent mom-and-pop shops that gave this area character have been pushed out, and we're left with a shell of what this place used to be. At this point, I've had fresher and better-constructed subs from Harris Teeter. That's not meant as a compliment. When customers start comparing a legendary deli to a grocery store sandwich counter--and the grocery store holds its own--it's probably time for some serious soul-searching. Nostalgia can only carry a business so far. Unfortunately, the sandwich I had was living almost entirely on memories.
