I had the seafood platter and it was pretty good but my wife - who does not eat seafood - got a petite strip which had a lot of gristle and had none of the flavor of a quality steakhouse-cooked steak. She couldn't eat it all because it was tough in the center. The manager only charged half price for it but I think the restaurant should either learn how to cook steaks properly or take them off the menu. I mean they certainly aren't any lower in price than a steakhouse steak. But, back to the seafood that I had, I mentioned that it was "pretty good" but honestly I've had better tasting seafood from Cape Fear Seafood (NC). Doesnt even deserve one star. Waited over 45 minutes for our food, everyone who came in and was seated afterwards had eaten their meal by the time we got ours. When we finally did get our meal, the chicken was under cooked with blood running out. We told the manager on our way out and he disbt say a word to us. As always the service at Chesapeake House was outstanding. The atmosphere is casual, comfortable and elegant. We arrived early and we're seated promptly. Some of our party ordered from the early bird selection, while others from the dinner menu. The hush puppies and cinnamon rolls were delivered, they looked amazing but were lacking in taste. Unfortunately the rest of the meal followed suit. The salads were of limp iceberg lettuce and mushy tomatoes. The flounder was bland both broiled and fried. The shrimp and grits was over cooked. Worst meal ever. Fish stew with rice was what I ordered. Was in town for the weekend and I popped in solo while hubby was fishing. Can only describe the stew as tomato soup with fragments of fish. There was a rather long wait for a table, but they have a bar and allow you to take your drinks anywhere on the property, including outside on the patio area with rocking chairs and near the fenced in pond with lots of painted turtles and a few gators. The restaurant was clean and had a good atmosphere. The server was very professional, friendly, and good with the kids. They offered our 17 year old a piece of key lime pie, which was excellent, for her birthday. The steak and seafood was great. They offer in house made dressings for the salads and Manhattan Chowder with the meals. The clam chowder was exquisite. The ribeyes were flavorful and perfectly prepared. The crab legs were expensive, "because of covid" really because of the overregulation and subsidies, but it was tasty. The offered "Swamp Water", a mixture of sprite, lemonade, etc and tasted like a nonalcoholic mojito, to kids. It came in a plastic green colored glass with a flashing light ice cube in it. Went here for our first time for early bird dinner. We expected local seafood and found the specials of the day were salmon and mahi mahi. Not exactly local specials. The other fish were shrimp, flounder and deviled crabs. So I ordered the salmon. It was definitely farmed and it was grilled and tasty. The waitress recommended it. My partner ordered the combination platter, the flounder was tiny, breaded with some breadcrumbs and overcooked. The shrimp were tough and over cooked and the deviled crab was tiny and had very little crab. The seafood stew, a $1 add-on was very tasty. The cinnamon rolls were hot and delicious but served at the beginning of the meal. A fully dumb idea. The hush puppies were not hush puppies but something like round sweet cornbread. Very tasty. This is our fourth visit to the Chesapeake House. There were eight people in our group for dinner. Six of us had the Mahi Mahi, and the others had the fried combination platter and grilled chicken. Everyone enjoyed there meals very much. They also serve cinnamon rolls and hush puppies with the meal, which are worth the trip alone. DISAPPOINTED My wife and I were excited to come back to Chesapeake House. We had good experiences in the past. When we drove up there were signs all in front of the restaurant asking for cooks. I had the seafood platter and my wife had the fried oysters. The meal was not good. Fish had a chlorine taste like restaurants do when trying to mask old fish smell. Great view overlooking a pond with wildlife. Older decor but has a homey feel. Nice side entrance for handicap and wheelchair bound guests which is nice.
