My husband and I were on vacation in Myrtle Beach and we were in the mood for seafood. We came across Chesapeake House. This restaurant was amazing! The inside is older it has been around for 50+ years. We sat next to a window overlooking the small lake out back. My husband ordered the grilled mahi mahi which was fantastic! The turtles and alligator outside earned this place a star. We went on a Sunday night and waited an hour thinking that meant this place was good. Wrong. Food was not that great. I'm shocked that the health dept hasn't shut it down. They leave sour cream on the table all day. It's warm! It's supposed to be refrigerated. It says it on the package! I asked the waitress why and she said they have been doing it for years thinking nothing was wrong. Looking at me like I'm crazy! She said they refrigerate it at night and bring it back out the next day. So now the sour cream has been warmed and cooled over and over again!?! "Worlds Famous" fish stew tasted like spicy tomato soup with tuna fish it it. Crab cakes were ehh. Chicken parm was covered in Monterey Jack?! Not Mozzarella. As Marylanders, we couldn't pass up a restaurant with a name that reminded us of home. We had dinner on a Monday night. We were one of the smaller parties seated (4), but they offer seating options for larger parties (10+), as many of those were seated while we waited. Just be sure at least 5 in your party have arrived - that seemed to be the minimum number onsite once your table was ready before they would seat you. Our waiter was very pleasant. We didn't get the bread basket, so I'm not sure if that is complimentary. We did get the fish stew. We had the artichoke/spinach dip (we added crab). Wish it had come with more toasted bread to scoop it onto, but straight from the appetizer plate to my mouth via a fork worked just as well. My husband and older son had the flounder, which they enjoyed. I had fried oysters (yum!). My younger son devoured his N.Y. strip steak. We were too full for dessert. Would recommend for parties large and small, and they are family friendly. They do take reservations; we hadn't made them. I am giving a two stars not for the restaurant itself. We had a server in the lounge area which the bar area was under construction. Everything was going good when two plates came out cold to the touch. We asked the waiter if he would fix it and he replied, "what would we want?" Our quest stated, "hot would be good". Snapping back the waiter stated no kidding who wouldn't and this was the last time we saw him. We had the food return from another waitress and we had to go to the bar twice to get our refills. I went to CH with a friend for a 7pm reservation and we still had to wait about 15+ mins for our table. I guess I should be thankful that we had the reservation? They start you off with a bread basket with cinnamon rolls, bread, honey butter, and hush puppies. We were starving so we were quite excited about the bread basket, however, the hush puppies were basically jiffy corn mix rolled into balls and fried. No herbs, no onions, no seasoning. The honey butter was good though. The dinner plates come with salad, soup, and another side. I ordered one of the combination plates and chose the baked potato. The baked potato was yummy, the clam strips were good, but EVERYTHING else was bland. My friend had to request Old Bay seasoning because her baked pasta dish had absolutely no seasoning. We have eaten here a couple of times, but our most recent trip was "fair". We were there and In line when they opened at 430pm and were seated promptly. Very friendly staff and our server was very attentive. 6 in our party and we mostly ordered fried flounder and shrimp. The flounder was good, the shrimp was fair. Didn't seem to have much flavor/seasoning. The cole Slaw was "tough" as it seemed Mostly made of the outer cabbage leafs. Maybe just an off night but the quality didn't seem as good as it had on past visits. I guess for the menu prices, we expect excellent quality every time. read more

I really thought that this place would really be good, because there is always a lot of cars in the parking lot. The people that work there were really nice, but that is all I have to say that is good about this restaurant. I was so hungry that I ate most of my meal. The chairs were sticky and need cleaning. The salad was made with iceberg lettuce and was served with one slice of old, dried out cucumber. The tartar sauce had a film over top of it. The cinnamon rolls and the fish were dried out and old. The shrimp appeared to be right out of the freezer and pre-cooked and were served with what appeared to be catch-up instead of normal cocktail sauce. We showed up at the right time as when were leaving there was a massive wait but these peeps are a well oiled machine. The food and the prices are worth the wait. I had a fried soft shell crab. Never had that before and after figuring out how to attack such a delight I was in seafood heaven. I'm a bit of a cook but do not see myself being ambitious enough to try it at home. The crab was well seasoned, the staff were very attentive and if you get a seat by the window you can see alligators in the lake. That's as close as I want to be to a gator anyways. First time here, we had reservations and was seated around 20 minutes later which gave us time to see the alligator in the back. Once seated that served us cinnamon rolls the kids enjoyed it my was rather dry. The hush puppies were very good. We had to wait a while for food due to COVID the kitchen was perhaps understaffed. I ordered the Chesapeake baked fish it was covered with crab. They fish was cooked very well but the crab had bites of shell in almost every bite. I still don't understand why the their rating is so low. Everything was excellent! Seating didn't take long and they even allowed our request to sit by the window to watch the turtles and alligators. We were here 2 years ago and loved it, so this year we came back during our Myrtle Beach vacation. We requested a very social distanced table and were accommodated! Doug was our outstanding server; he was so efficient and conscientious, right down to the last detail. Food was delicious, just as we remembered. I had the fried shrimp and oyster dinner with baked potato and salad, and my hubs had the seafood platter with fries and salad. The portions were ample, salads fresh and crisp, and the homemade sauces and salad dressings were amazing! We will definitely be returning here on our next visit to Myrtle Beach! I always ask locals about their favorite "must try" restaurant. I spoke to multiple locals and this place kept popping up in the response. And for good reason! Let's start with the fact that once you sit down you are greeted with comp warm glazed cinnamon rolls, hot yeast bread, amazing family made hush puppies followed by a cup of the famous fish stew! I decided to treat myself to Carolina Crab Cakes. I felt it was only right since the seafood here was supposed to be amazing and I didn't have crab cakes my entire trip, yet! They were a blend of Atlantic back fin carbmeat and spices served with a remoulade sauce. These things were huge, I couldn't even finish all of it! Tender and full of flavor, you could really tell it was fresh seafood! I couldn't get enough of the yeast rolls & hush puppies! I love me some carbs but this totally beat the typical bread & butter some places offer with your meal (if they even offer anything). I went at night so sitting next to those large windows didn't do much but I'm sure it was a nice view. The dinning area has a few rooms, plenty of seating but I hear it can get pretty busy so I suggest a reservation. For seniors, they have a pretty sweet senior menu, my aunt took advantage of it (lucky!) very similar menu options and they didn't downside the portions! Staff was very friendly & attentive. We visited the Chesapeake House while on vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC during the 4th of July holidays. The first thing you need to know is that they accept reservations, and you need to make reservations or be prepared to wait a very long time. Of course, we were unfamiliar with this restaurant and showed up without reservations and had to wait with 100+ of our new friends to be slotted in when there was an opening. Once we were seated things got better quickly. Our server was very courteous and offered suggestions for menu items. We were brought a basket of bread and hushpuppies and butter while we waited for our food. My wife and I had the fried fish platter with deviled crab, shrimp, flounder, and baked potato. The food was excellent. Perfect for a beach vacation. Bottom line - the food and service are excellent, but you need to make reservations. Highly recommend. read more

If you like seafood fresh from the freezer, then this is the place for you. I ate here recently with a large group, and almost no one finished their meal. The "broiled" flounder was bland and more like steamed, and the fried flounder didn't have much taste either. A couple of members of our group got beef tips, which were mostly fat and gristle, and more than half not eaten. The only OK things we had were the hushpuppies and the side salad. The bread pudding was thick and chewy. The cinnamon rolls, which are apparently the signature item, were ok. Service was adequate. This was the second year our group ate here (beyond our control), but we do not plan to make this a stop on our next trip. With all the places to eat in Myrtle Beach, there surely has to be better seafood than this somewhere; if not, maybe take a short drive to Calabash. read more

Just are at this lovely seafood restaurant. In the Mytrle/North Myrtle area there are so many restaurants it's hard to figure out which ones to try. Well this is a place you should try. Plenty of food, and all was done well. Has the steak and lobster. Lobster tail was huge and done perfectly. The steal was a 10oz ribeye. While I did find the steak a little on the thin size it was still done perfectly and the the flavor was there. We were promptly greeted at the door, by who I believe was the owner. She was very pleasant as was the service. We don't get down this way often as we are from New York/Pennsylvania, but when we come back this place will be on our list of places to dine. We ordered a hodgepodge of broiled fish, shrimp, fried oysters. Salad. All were dumb dumb good. Is the chief on PED's? Because he/she is cranking out some good stuff. I don't think I could say more than what's been already said. If I'm out somewhere and have something crazy good ill ask for info. This place is extremely overrated! We read several good/great reviews for Chesapeake House prior to dining. We either picked our meals very poorly or this place is extremely overrated. My wife had the fantail shrimp which was sautéed - taste was average at best. And at $21.95 way over priced for the portion size. I had the scallops which were grilled - again flavor was average at best. And again at $26.95 way over priced. We both had baked potatoes as our side, which come wrapped in tin foil. They ask you to prepare them yourself by splitting, adding butter and sour cream - which is fine but again based on the meal cost seems like a slap in the face. Additionally our salads were very pathetic - 1 piece of cucumber, a few slivers of carrot, 2 croutons and the rest was old lettuce. The kids meals were fine but also cost $9 each because the cost of drinks are not included.. Really?!! The service was average just like the food. The table, chairs and decor is very dated. The best part of the meal was the bread basket which ironically is the only thing everyone gets at no charge. read more

My friend and I were driving for a while up Kings Highway, mulling over where to eat, being that there are so many seafood restaurants...oh, how to choose? She noticed the signage out front declaring Chesapeake House "voted best seafood" so we decided to give it a try. It was a Monday night and there were people waiting outside and a 20 minute wait. We took seats on the rocking chairs out front and read up on some yelp reviews to pass the time and get an idea of what was to come. We eventually went inside and noticed the old school vibe...very casual, carpeting throughout and old wooden furniture. Something about it made me feel like grandma's house...sort of that warm and cozy feel. I like restaurants that are historic and charming, and that it was. From reading yelp reviews, we knew we were in for a large basket of breads, cinnamon buns and hush puppies...SO good! Also got a basket of butter the same size. We both ordered our meals (she had a grilled fish entree (I think it was a special--swordfish?) and I had the "Seafood Monterey": shrimp, scallops and crabmeat baked over pasta with Monterey Jack cheese topped with hollandaise sauce. It was good, very cheesy and filling, especially after our garden salads which accompanied our dinners. Part of the Chesapeake House experience is a small sample of the fish stew which is served in a ramiken alongside the salad....very different and interesting and definitely a southern style item. It was a tomato based soup with assorted types of seafood mixed in...good to sample, but don't think I could have it as a meal. Although we saw a group next to us going to town on the fish stew dinner plate, which was served over white rice. Overall, a good way to taste some of the local MB seafood without going to a calabash style buffet which are a dime a dozen along the MB strip! read more
