I really thought that this place would really be good, because there is always a lot of cars in the parking lot. The people that work there were really nice, but that is all I have to say that is good about this restaurant. I was so hungry that I ate most of my meal. The chairs were sticky and need cleaning. The salad was made with iceberg lettuce and was served with one slice of old, dried out cucumber. The tartar sauce had a film over top of it. The cinnamon rolls and the fish were dried out and old. The shrimp appeared to be right out of the freezer and pre-cooked and were served with what appeared to be catch-up instead of normal cocktail sauce. I think the restaurant itself is still in business because of the location... It's absolutely not in business because it serves quality food. read more

Would not recommend this restaurant. The ribeye steak is of poor quality for any price. Plenty of other restaurants in the area to choose from. They have been in business for 50 years???? We showed up at the right time as when were leaving there was a massive wait but these peeps are a well oiled machine. The food and the prices are worth the wait. I had a fried soft shell crab. Never had that before and after figuring out how to attack such a delight I was in seafood heaven. I'm a bit of a cook but do not see myself being ambitious enough to try it at home. The crab was well seasoned, the staff were very attentive and if you get a seat by the window you can see alligators in the lake. That's as close as I want to be to a gator anyways. Once seated that served us cinnamon rolls the kids enjoyed it my was rather dry. The hush puppies were very good. We had to wait a while for food due to COVID the kitchen was perhaps understaffed. We were here 2 years ago and loved it, so this year we came back during our Myrtle Beach vacation. We requested a very social distanced table and were accommodated! Doug was our outstanding server; he was so efficient and conscientious, right down to the last detail. Food was delicious, just as we remembered. I had the fried shrimp and oyster dinner with baked potato and salad, and my hubs had the seafood platter with fries and salad. The portions were ample, salads fresh and crisp, and the homemade sauces and salad dressings were amazing! We will definitely be returning here on our next visit to Myrtle Beach! I always ask locals about their favorite "must try" restaurant. I spoke to multiple locals and this place kept popping up in the response. And for good reason! Let's start with the fact that once you sit down you are greeted with comp warm glazed cinnamon rolls, hot yeast bread, amazing family made hush puppies followed by a cup of the famous fish stew! I decided to treat myself to Carolina Crab Cakes. I felt it was only right since the seafood here was supposed to be amazing and I didn't have crab cakes my entire trip, yet! They were a blend of Atlantic back fin carbmeat and spices served with a remoulade sauce. These things were huge, I couldn't even finish all of it! Tender and full of flavor, you could really tell it was fresh seafood! I couldn't get enough of the yeast rolls & hush puppies! I love me some carbs but this totally beat the typical bread & butter some places offer with your meal (if they even offer anything). I went at night so sitting next to those large windows didn't do much but I'm sure it was a nice view. The dinning area has a few rooms, plenty of seating but I hear it can get pretty busy so I suggest a reservation. For seniors, they have a pretty sweet senior menu, my aunt took advantage of it (lucky!) very similar menu options and they didn't downside the portions! Staff was very friendly & attentive. We visited the Chesapeake House while on vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC during the 4th of July holidays. The first thing you need to know is that they accept reservations, and you need to make reservations or be prepared to wait a very long time. Of course, we were unfamiliar with this restaurant and showed up without reservations and had to wait with 100+ of our new friends to be slotted in when there was an opening. Once we were seated things got better quickly. Our server was very courteous and offered suggestions for menu items. We were brought a basket of bread and hushpuppies and butter while we waited for our food. My wife and I had the fried fish platter with deviled crab, shrimp, flounder, and baked potato. If you like seafood fresh from the freezer, then this is the place for you. I ate here recently with a large group, and almost no one finished their meal. The "broiled" flounder was bland and more like steamed, and the fried flounder didn't have much taste either. A couple of members of our group got beef tips, which were mostly fat and gristle, and more than half not eaten. The only OK things we had were the hushpuppies and the side salad. The bread pudding was thick and chewy. The cinnamon rolls, which are apparently the signature item, were ok. Service was adequate. This was the second year our group ate here (beyond our control), but we do not plan to make this a stop on our next trip. With all the places to eat in Myrtle Beach, there surely has to be better seafood than this somewhere; if not, maybe take a short drive to Calabash. read more

Just are at this lovely seafood restaurant. In the Mytrle/North Myrtle area there are so many restaurants it's hard to figure out which ones to try. Well this is a place you should try. Plenty of food, and all was done well. Has the steak and lobster. Lobster tail was huge and done perfectly. The steal was a 10oz ribeye. While I did find the steak a little on the thin size it was still done perfectly and the the flavor was there. We were promptly greeted at the door, by who I believe was the owner. She was very pleasant as was the service. We don't get down this way often as we are from New York/Pennsylvania, but when we come back this place will be on our list of places to dine. This place is extremely overrated! We read several good/great reviews for Chesapeake House prior to dining. We either picked our meals very poorly or this place is extremely overrated. My wife had the fantail shrimp which was sautéed - taste was average at best. And at $21.95 way over priced for the portion size. I had the scallops which were grilled - again flavor was average at best. And again at $26.95 way over priced. We both had baked potatoes as our side, which come wrapped in tin foil. They ask you to prepare them yourself by splitting, adding butter and sour cream - which is fine but again based on the meal cost seems like a slap in the face. Additionally our salads were very pathetic - 1 piece of cucumber, a few slivers of carrot, 2 croutons and the rest was old lettuce. The kids meals were fine but also cost $9 each because the cost of drinks are not included.. Really?!! The service was average just like the food. The table, chairs and decor is very dated. My friend and I were driving for a while up Kings Highway, mulling over where to eat, being that there are so many seafood restaurants...oh, how to choose? She noticed the signage out front declaring Chesapeake House "voted best seafood" so we decided to give it a try. It was a Monday night and there were people waiting outside and a 20 minute wait. We took seats on the rocking chairs out front and read up on some yelp reviews to pass the time and get an idea of what was to come. We eventually went inside and noticed the old school vibe...very casual, carpeting throughout and old wooden furniture. Something about it made me feel like grandma's house...sort of that warm and cozy feel. I like restaurants that are historic and charming, and that it was. From reading yelp reviews, we knew we were in for a large basket of breads, cinnamon buns and hush puppies...SO good! Also got a basket of butter the same size. We both ordered our meals (she had a grilled fish entree (I think it was a special--swordfish?) and I had the "Seafood Monterey": shrimp, scallops and crabmeat baked over pasta with Monterey Jack cheese topped with hollandaise sauce. It was good, very cheesy and filling, especially after our garden salads which accompanied our dinners. Part of the Chesapeake House experience is a small sample of the fish stew which is served in a ramiken alongside the salad....very different and interesting and definitely a southern style item. It was a tomato based soup with assorted types of seafood mixed in...good to sample, but don't think I could have it as a meal. Although we saw a group next to us going to town on the fish stew dinner plate, which was served over white rice. Upon walking in, I immediately noticed the smell of the restaurant. It smelled almost like an elderly sitting home. I also noticed the interior. Nothing fancy at all. Dark, almost rotten-looking wood lined the walls, and the carpet was outdated beyond relief. It was dark, and the tables had the cheapest table cloths I've ever seen. And After near choking just looking at the prices, it hit me that this place was supposedly a "high-class restaurant." I didn't want to believe it, but the prices never lie. When the complimentary Fish stew arrived, we were wishing it wasn't complimentary. It was bitter, and not too pleasing. Of course, we are northerners, but they should expect tourists. The (included) appetizer was a basket consisting of Delicious Hush Puppies, Scrumptious Cinnamon Rolls, and Thickly-sliced Bread served with the options of honey butter, and margarine. I'm not going to lie: those Hush Puppies were the best I've ever had! You could tell they were freshly fried! The sweet tea was great! When I had the first bite of my meal (Grilled Teriyaki Chicken, with fries($15.96)), I learned real reason for the expensiveness. The fries were TO DIE FOR, and the grilled chicken was grilled to perfection! This place was recommended by several folks and its ratings on Yelp seemed OK, It's not. It is a very poor dining experience. I was there with a party of 10 people, Yes you will normally have one person who does not like their food but, 5 out of 10? The meal started well with adequate seating, the waitress was friendly enough. The meal started with our drink orders, then a basket of Cinnamon rolls, warm bread and unusual hush puppies. But it went down hill from there. Yelp calls moderately priced restaurants 11-30 dollars. most of the entrees here were 17-28 dollars. We ordered: Lobster pie, Crab Cakes, Flounder, Fish Strips, Scallops, Fried River Shrimp, Crab Soup, Seafood Platter. The Lobster pie was bland and mostly mushy bread very little Lobster. The Crab Cakes were two dark brown rounds of breading with no visible (or flavor of) crab meat. The Flounder was rated good by the two that had it. The Fish Strips were excellent. The Scallops (this was an appetizer my wife was not very hungry) were excellent. The Shrimp was not de-veined and tasted like they came from a frozen source with soggy breading and a real musty flavor (not edible). The Crab Soup was "tasty". The Seafood Platter was passable (Hardly worth the price). There were so many complaints the manager did remove items from the check. When the check came there was an automatic 18% gratuity and the waitress seemed to be fishing (forgive the pun) for more. I will not recommend this place to anyone and next time I am in Myrtle Beach, I will not come back. read more

Also, a pet peeve of mine is when a server doesn't refill the drinks often. This one certainly didn't. I ended up having to get his attention a few times to ask for a refill. He also didn't mention anything about their specials and we had to specifically ask. Now on to the food... I'm assuming you've probably already seen/heard about the cinnamon roll and hush puppy hype that this place has. I'll admit, they were good. A highlight of our meal. All entrees come with a salad and tiny cup of soup. Both were average. I ordered the combination platter with broiled flounder, grilled shrimp, and green beans. Overall, it was a good meal. I really enjoyed the shrimp. However, nothing wowed me. Also ordered at our table was another combo platter with fried oysters, broiled flounder, and green beans, the grilled NY strip steak that came with green beans and fried onions, and the Chesapeake baked flounder with green beans. Yes, we love our veggies! The fried oysters and Chesapeake baked flounder was reportedly pretty awesome. However, the steak was less than average and didn't impress my steak-loving brother at all. To start with, our server, Doug, was an extremely talented and professional server. He is the best server we've had in Myrtle Beach and one of the best we've had in our 35 years of dining as husband and wife. KUDOS to you, sir. We began our meal with their "famous onion rings." Wow! Were we surprised when a huge plate of them arrived. The rings themselves were about a half inch cut with the most delicious, light, tasteful batter I've seen. We could not stop eating them! We each had a house salad which was a very good side. The dressing, Parmesan peppercorn was very good. My wife ordered the catch of the day and she selected mahi mahi. Her meal came with butter beans. Her fish was done perfectly broiled and the beans were delicious. I ordered the "early bird flounder" meal which was described on the menu as a smaller portion for those with a less hearty appetite. The serving was very large! I ordered it broiled and it was done to perfection. Cooked but not dried out and very flaky and moist. It was seasoned correctly and not terribly over seasoned like so many Cajun, blackened or otherwise entrees offered every where else. We had eaten way too much when Doug stopped and recommended desert. No way! Doug was very attentive, stopping back once or twice to inquire about our meals and he was ever so unnoticeable in the way he kept our beverages full (I had unsweetened ice tea, fresh brewed and my wife had diet Coke). One of my pet peeves in restaurants is cleanliness and for me, a establishment that presents a very clean restroom is not only impressive but is indicative of the care that the establishment takes to utilize sanitary skills. My wife has worked for one of the largest family owned food wholesalers in the U.S.A. (Who also operates in Canada) for over 17 years as an outside sales representative. She gets I to restaurants, kitchens, back and front of the house multiple times daily. When you impress her, like this establishment did, that is saying a lot. Now...I have not read any of the other reviews but based on our experience, I cannot possibly fathom why they only have a 3 1/2 star review status. Mark my word, you cannot go wrong here. The restaurant was very busy with what seemed to be quite a few locals. That says a lot. In closing, what drew us to thus restaurant was the sign outside that said, "Family owned and operated for 43 years." Outstanding service and the best seafood I had the pleasure of tasting in the area! My family has been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. I definitely recommend reservations because the place gets extremely packed after 6pm. We went for the early bird special at 5:15 and there was already a considerable number of people waiting to be seated. We had a table by the window and due to the lurking alligator close by, the kids were thoroughly entertained. Our waiter was extremely attentive and was very helpful in making recommendations on the menu. We had the bacon wrapped scallops for an appetizer and they were heavenly. They were fresh, sweet and succulent on the inside with a crispy outside. The she-crab soup was thick and chocked full of crab. It was a bit salty which suited me fine. Everyone loved the bread basket with the cinnamon rolls and hush puppies. I ordered the seafood combo off the early bird menu. The shrimp were fresh and crispy, the fish was perfectly cooked and delicately fried in a corn meal batter, not heavy at all. The deviled crab was equally delicious. Our drinks were refilled constantly and the check came back in a reasonable amount of time. Saw several restaurants along Restaurant Row and just picked this one for no reason other than a whim. We had an excellent waitress (Hannah). We bombarded her with questions about the menu, mixed drinks, etc. She handled them all with a great smile and attitude. While waiting for our table at the bar we had a couple adult beverages which were okay. Bartender was friendly and attentive. Drinks were okay. The food was quite good. And dangerously close to ruining the rest of the meal. Fish stew comes with each meal and is spot on. Other soup options include She-Crab soup which is a hit with its richness and great crab meat and flavor. In the past, a great option was the New England clam chowder, but somebody must have changed the recipe and now it's a no go. No flavor other than a glass of milk with potatoes. Our dinner included the Seafood Monterey, the seafood medley and the daily special of grilled Mahi Mahi topped with crab meat. The Seafood Monterey was the hit of the table. Rich, great flavor and so fresh. The medley of shrimp scallops and oysters were so tender and well cooked. Overall great dinner, location and service. Our party of 8 dined here for an early dinner - 5:00 on a Monday. The atmosphere is good - there is a lake behind the restaurant with turtles and alligators and lots of birds. The restaurant has big windows and is great for the kids. (Also have the kids check out the tropical tank in the hallway and the large mounted sea creatures throughout the restaurant.) The menu has lots of seafood, along with a few beef and chicken dishes. Our meal started with a big basked of bread, hushpuppies, and sweet rolls - all tasty and a good way to start off a meal. My dinner was a seafood combo of grilled scallops and fried shrimp. The scallops exceeded expectations, with a nice, charcoal grilled taste. The shrimp and the sides were good but not excellent. The dinner was served with a small cup of fish stew which was quite tasty. All of the food around our table was in the 3-4 star range. This place really feels like it needs an update. I'm sure many people come back to a place like this year after year expecting the same thing, but it feels like I've stepped into a seafood restaurant from the 70's or 80's. I think they would do well with freshened decor and menu items. There is some good food hear, but nothing I would consider imaginative. Still, there is just enough here for us to probably come back next year. read more
