The Chesapeake House has become a tradition in my family. I have been going to this place since I was a baby and will continue to go here. The food is always delicious and the view is beautiful. I've been visiting Myrtle Beach (I have family there) for almost 30 years and somehow had never been to Chesapeake House. I visited for the first time over the Christmas holiday and had a pleasant experience. Decor is classic old-school seafood restaurant. Dark wood, dim lighting, and loads of nautical knick-knacks. I loved it. Our server was prompt, extremely attentive, and was quick to offer helpful suggestions. They offer a variety of seafood combination platters along with all the classics and, based on our server's recommendations, we all went with combo platters. A fun surprise was the cinnamon rolls that were served along with the bread and hush puppies with honey butter. A little decadent perhaps but when in Rome... Next out were dinner salads and their "World Famous Fish Stew." The salads were unremarkable but the fish stew got mixed reviews from our table. Several of my fellow diners felt it had a touch too much vinegar but I enjoyed it as something a little different. However, I don't think I'd want a large bowl. The cup that comes with the entree, really a tasting portion, was about the right size serving. Another pleasant surprise was that on the Combination Platter, diners can choose the preparation for each element of the platter and aren't limited to just "broiled" or "fried." For example, I got grilled shrimp, sautéed scallops, and fried flounder. The seafood was all fresh and well prepared. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and the food and will definitely add Chesapeake House to my list of fav seafood spots in Myrtle Beach. read more

GREAT service, GREAT food! My family and I were visiting from the west coast and this place was recommended to us by the locals. We visited this place during the middle of the week and it was packed. Our server Bonnie was AWESOME! She was friendly, very helpful in our menu selections, and kept the refills coming with a smile on her face. Once at our table we were welcomed with a bread basked filled with warm cinnamon rolls, hush puppies and white bread. The she soup was filled with fish and very flavorful. We all had dishes that were hearty and just filled with seafood, from the inlet shrimp to the lobster pie, to the seafood platter. Definitely will be back when we visit. read more

First off, the lake. The restaurant sits on a nice lake that comes complete with an alligator. So this provides a nice backdrop for your dinner. The decor is what you would expect from a "nice but nothing fancy" seafood restaurant. Nice place for family dining. Service has always been good. Wait staff is professional and attentive. The food is not gourmet or fancy but it's consistently good. This is comfort food for people who like seafood. Lot's of fried options but most items can be ordered broiled and some blackened. The portions are large and more than enough for most people to split an entree. The scallops are huge and flavorful, the fried oysters are consistent but like most places the batter and oil detract from the flavor of the oysters. The lobster pie is very rich and heavy (stay away if you're on a diet). But my favorite thing are the cinnamon rolls they put in the basket of bread and hush puppies. read more

Quintessential beach food. Entrees come with a lot of sides. 3 different breads (cinnamon rolls, hush puppies, and sliced French bread), small cup of soup, salad, side of your choice served with entree. My only complaint was that the croutons on the salad were stale. Service was wonderful. Scenery was wonderful. Food was excellent. We'll definitely be back. Call before to see if they are busy and if you need a reservation. We came on a Tuesday at 7pm and were seated immediately. Oh and the hush puppies were some of the best I've ever had. I had grilled flounder, grilled shrimp with a baked potatoe and grilled snap peas. The flounder was terrible, the shrimp was over cooked, the snap peas were mushy, The baked potatoe was the best part of the meal. I give the food a D- and the service a C+. It was a $35 lousy meal. I will not return to this restaurant and I do not recommend it. read more

This place needs a gut job. It's like walking into 1984. The only thing it has going for them is the water view. I think it's a pond but I'm not sure. The bread basket was pretty good. I liked The hush puppies. The salads are sad. One sliver of a red onion. One little slice of a cucumber. And a tiny grouping of diced tomatoes. And the ranch was bland. You also get a cup of their fish stew. They claim this is world famous. I wish I could have spit it out. I decided to get the fried oysters which they claim are the "best anywhere". They were tiny. I've had better fried oysters at Benjamin's Calabash buffet. My friend ordered their marinated sirloin. We couldn't taste the marinade. And the steak was chewy. My wife and I go here every time we are in Myrtle Beach. We always do the Early Bird (b4 6pm), because we get more than enough to eat and it costs a lot less. All of the food is excellent! I had the combo platter fried $18+ (flounder, deviled crab, and shrimp). I am not much of a fish person, but it was delicious. It comes with a large piece of flounder, one deviled crab, and 6 shrimp. The baked potato was perfect. I ordered bleu cheese with my salad. It was the chunky kind I like. My wife ordered the deviled crab, which comes with 3 deviled crabs. Outstanding food and outstanding service from Jason on 3 August during the early bird session. Jason was super attentive and responded quickly to everything we asked for. Food was excellent as always especially the flounder and the bread basket. Hard to beat warm homemade cinnamon roles. My family has been visiting this restaurant for years and we definitely continue to return. My only suggestion would be to add snow crab to the menu as an addition to King Crab. On July 18, we had a family reunion party of 16. When we came we understood there would be a wait, we told the hostess it was ok to split us in to 2 groups of 8, after 1.5 hrs we were still waiting, they told us they were waiting for one table to seat us, after 2 hrs on a muggy evening they announced rudely our name and said if you are still here your table is ready. We followed the hostess and they put us at 2 tables 10 people and 6 people after we waited 2 hrs, we asked for the manager and her words were "WHAT"...What am I supposed to do" we wasted 4 hrs of our vacation. While we waited we tried to get a drink at the bar, bartender was so slowly and talking toomuch, no drinks needed to be made. The end. Never going back and not recommending PS. That evening my stomach started cramping and continued all night long. The next day I found out that 6 more members of our party also had terrible stomach pains and diarrhea after eating read more

Unbelievable! It's the only word I can use to describe this place... From the time you walk in the delicious smell of the cinnamon rolls takes you and tingles your senses. The hush puppies are fabulous (and I don't even usually like them), I ordered the combination platter choosing to go with the fried shrimp and oysters with a side of home made onion rings that were out of this world. Nothing tasted greasy, the shrimp and oysters were perfectly cooked not chewy nor tough, my husband chose the flounder which he said was perfect! This place was picked as one of my grandfather's favorites about 40 years ago when he & my grandmother started their yearly visits to Myrtle Beach. When I was a child, I was told that the alligators ate naughty little children, so I was always on best behaviour when I was anywhere near the lake. Yes, there's a terrible wait at all times (now that I'm back home, I can tell you that you should absolutely utilize their "call ahead" feature - not a reservation, but a jump up on the line to be seated - we called from Tanger Outlet on Hwy 17, about 2 minutes away, and we were quoted an hour wait - when we arrived & checked in, people were being told 1.5 hours, and we're a party of 5 - we ended up waiting only 25 minutes after we arrived). Our server was overwhelmed almost immediately after we walked in the door... he was being double- and triple- sat the entire time we were there. I don't know if this is a common practice, or simply the way the cards were dealt that night - the host staff seemed to be on top of their game. My parents had been earlier in the week and were completely satisfied with their meal. Our bread basket arrived on time (yes, complete with cinnamon rolls - a long-standing tradition for us - when I was little, my grandmother would heat them up the next morning in the oven in her hotel room). The cinnamon rolls seem to have gotten smaller over the years (which might just be due to the fact that I've gotten bigger), but they're still just as yummy as I remember them. We also love the hush puppies (more like doughnut holes) and the yeast bread (the perfect compliment for the fish stew). Our fish stew was hot and the salads had the correct dressings accompanying them. Couldn't really ask for much more. My father, mother, and I had the sauteed fantail shrimp (which is what I always get). Sauteed lightly in wine, butter, and herbs, these are pure heaven on earth - the absolute best shrimp I've ever had anywhere. The people who complain about Myrtle Beach seafood being frozen & thrown in a fryer obviously don't know where to eat or what to order - between the Sea Captain's House and the Chesapeake House, we have amazing seafood for our week-long vacation, full of broiled, sauteed, and other delectable preparations of fresh, local seafood. And the guy who didn't like his filet mignon - why are you ordering a filet mignon in a seafood restaurant?!?!? And if you don't want the cinnamon rolls, DON"T EAT THEM! Exercise the free will God gave you and ask the server to take them back. Don't ruin it for the rest of us tourists who take them home for breakfast the next day! I mistakenly ordered the green beans - which I thought I remembered being overcooked to an olive drab color and loaded with salt, but had hoped had been changed since I last ordered them over a decade ago - to no avail. Fortunately, my sister is on a low carb diet & was brought a baked potato instead of the green beans she ordered, so she & I traded, & we were both happy. We loved everything - my brother had the crab cakes, which we've never tried here - and they were delicious, as well. My sister had the grilled fish of the day, Mahi Mahi, which looked a little dry to me, but she enjoyed it. Our server seemed relieved that we ordered dessert - I think it was just because it gave him a few minutes to catch up. We ordered the bread pudding (made from the cinnamon rolls, white chocolate chips, cream, and raisins) and key lime pie. Both were delicious. I have to point out that the bussing staff do not seem to be very efficient. As far as I could tell, they only touched tables once the guests had left - even though I watched one busser stand next to the exit to the kitchen, doing nothing besides yawning for a solid five minutes. I just felt like our server could have used their help (our fish stew cups were still on the table after we'd paid the check). Another server brought around a water pitcher and refilled our drinks toward the end of our meal. These tasks could have easily and quickly been completed by a busser, without taking him away from his other duties. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious and our server continually apologized for being "in the weeds" - a phrase which was lost on everyone at our table except me, We will continue to make this one of our "twice for dinner" stops on our week-long vacations. They'd have to change quite a lot to make us change our minds about the Chesapeake House. As far as I can remember, the prices haven't gone up in at least four years, which is another plus, considering this economy. Thanks, Chesapeake House! The Chesapeake House is fantastic. My husband and his family eat there multiple times every time we cone to Myrtle Beach. It is a great place to eat. The best oysters, salmon, flounder, shrimp,etc we have had. The price is good and staff is great! :-) also it is very clean and the alligator/turtle pond is so excitind for the children. I was actually driving to another restaurant during our vacation and I notice the huge sign that read 'voted # 1" . My husband says to me, let's try it. I should have known better when I saw there was plenty of parking and no line on a Saturday afternoon in Myrtle Beach in August. We walk in and the 1970s decor and dingy carpet should have been my next cue to leave. Finally the food comes out. The cinnamon rolls may have been the only thing I was able to eat. They put those on top of the old stale bread. The shrimp and grits were just awful from the moment I looked at them with a brown gravy. I could go on but I will just say save your money and go to Calabashes or the Fish Marketplace. I usually don't do reviews but I felt compelled to inform people about this place. read more

The appetizer basket of hush puppies and cinnamon rolls are great. The not so good: The meals were just so-so. I ordered a cheese and scallop linguine on my first visit and the cheese overpowered everything. I ordered clams on my next visit and I was disappointed again. Long waits, it is so popular. Very noisy, but in years past we really loved it. Some members of the party observed that the salad was from a bag and far below the good standard of previous years. I had crab cakes and they were good. Not outstanding, but good. I tasted the lobster pie from a companion, I felt it was not as good as previous years.
