Long waits, it is so popular. Very noisy, but in years past we really loved it. Some members of the party observed that the salad was from a bag and far below the good standard of previous years. I had crab cakes and they were good. Not outstanding, but good. I tasted the lobster pie from a companion, I felt it was not as good as previous years. This place was picked as one of my grandfather's favorites about 40 years ago when he & my grandmother started their yearly visits to Myrtle Beach. When I was a child, I was told that the alligators ate naughty little children, so I was always on best behaviour when I was anywhere near the lake. Yes, there's a terrible wait at all times (now that I'm back home, I can tell you that you should absolutely utilize their "call ahead" feature - not a reservation, but a jump up on the line to be seated - we called from Tanger Outlet on Hwy 17, about 2 minutes away, and we were quoted an hour wait - when we arrived & checked in, people were being told 1.5 hours, and we're a party of 5 - we ended up waiting only 25 minutes after we arrived). Our server was overwhelmed almost immediately after we walked in the door... he was being double- and triple- sat the entire time we were there. I don't know if this is a common practice, or simply the way the cards were dealt that night - the host staff seemed to be on top of their game. My parents had been earlier in the week and were completely satisfied with their meal. Our bread basket arrived on time (yes, complete with cinnamon rolls - a long-standing tradition for us - when I was little, my grandmother would heat them up the next morning in the oven in her hotel room). The cinnamon rolls seem to have gotten smaller over the years (which might just be due to the fact that I've gotten bigger), but they're still just as yummy as I remember them. We also love the hush puppies (more like doughnut holes) and the yeast bread (the perfect compliment for the fish stew). Our fish stew was hot and the salads had the correct dressings accompanying them. Couldn't really ask for much more. My father, mother, and I had the sauteed fantail shrimp (which is what I always get). Sauteed lightly in wine, butter, and herbs, these are pure heaven on earth - the absolute best shrimp I've ever had anywhere. The people who complain about Myrtle Beach seafood being frozen & thrown in a fryer obviously don't know where to eat or what to order - between the Sea Captain's House and the Chesapeake House, we have amazing seafood for our week-long vacation, full of broiled, sauteed, and other delectable preparations of fresh, local seafood. And the guy who didn't like his filet mignon - why are you ordering a filet mignon in a seafood restaurant?!?!? And if you don't want the cinnamon rolls, DON"T EAT THEM! Exercise the free will God gave you and ask the server to take them back. Don't ruin it for the rest of us tourists who take them home for breakfast the next day! I mistakenly ordered the green beans - which I thought I remembered being overcooked to an olive drab color and loaded with salt, but had hoped had been changed since I last ordered them over a decade ago - to no avail. Fortunately, my sister is on a low carb diet & was brought a baked potato instead of the green beans she ordered, so she & I traded, & we were both happy. We loved everything - my brother had the crab cakes, which we've never tried here - and they were delicious, as well. My sister had the grilled fish of the day, Mahi Mahi, which looked a little dry to me, but she enjoyed it. Our server seemed relieved that we ordered dessert - I think it was just because it gave him a few minutes to catch up. We ordered the bread pudding (made from the cinnamon rolls, white chocolate chips, cream, and raisins) and key lime pie. Both were delicious. I have to point out that the bussing staff do not seem to be very efficient. As far as I could tell, they only touched tables once the guests had left - even though I watched one busser stand next to the exit to the kitchen, doing nothing besides yawning for a solid five minutes. I just felt like our server could have used their help (our fish stew cups were still on the table after we'd paid the check). Another server brought around a water pitcher and refilled our drinks toward the end of our meal. These tasks could have easily and quickly been completed by a busser, without taking him away from his other duties. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious and our server continually apologized for being "in the weeds" - a phrase which was lost on everyone at our table except me, We will continue to make this one of our "twice for dinner" stops on our week-long vacations. They'd have to change quite a lot to make us change our minds about the Chesapeake House. As far as I can remember, the prices haven't gone up in at least four years, which is another plus, considering this economy. Thanks, Chesapeake House! Love this place. Wait staff is always professional, great for large parties, just a few friends or a date night! The cinnamon rolls that come with the bread at the beginning of the meal are my favorite. And if you get there early/get lucky you'll get a seat by the window and get to watch the turtles during your meal. The Chesapeake House is fantastic. My husband and his family eat there multiple times every time we cone to Myrtle Beach. It is a great place to eat. The best oysters, salmon, flounder, shrimp,etc we have had. The price is good and staff is great! :-) also it is very clean and the alligator/turtle pond is so excitind for the children. I was actually driving to another restaurant during our vacation and I notice the huge sign that read 'voted # 1" . My husband says to me, let's try it. I should have known better when I saw there was plenty of parking and no line on a Saturday afternoon in Myrtle Beach in August. We walk in and the 1970s decor and dingy carpet should have been my next cue to leave. Finally the food comes out. The cinnamon rolls may have been the only thing I was able to eat. They put those on top of the old stale bread. The shrimp and grits were just awful from the moment I looked at them with a brown gravy. I could go on but I will just say save your money and go to Calabashes or the Fish Marketplace. I usually don't do reviews but I felt compelled to inform people about this place. read more

Went for dinner while in town for a conference. The basket-o-carbs was amazing and the amount of food was very generous. I got the deviled crabs and baked potato, which was average. Ate there twice in June 2014. Only ate there twice because a member of our group is a big fan of this place. The good: Good service. Everyone was friendly and prompt. The appetizer basket of hush puppies and cinnamon rolls are great. The not so good: The meals were just so-so. I ordered a cheese and scallop linguine on my first visit and the cheese overpowered everything. I ordered clams on my next visit and I was disappointed again. I'm quite surprised this only for 3 stars. This was probably one of the best meals on our trip to Myrtle Beach. The complimentary hush puppies are to die for. The rolls were not that good and the cinnamon rolls are fine. You can always ask for more of any these if you run out, which you probably will. Also, I'd recommend asking for more hush puppies if you have food to bring home. The server (forgot her name =() was very polite and very accommodating. Even though I didn't know how buttered beans tasted, she said I could order it and if I didn't like it, she would switch it out for something else (I did like it, but I know some people wouldn't). Also, she allowed some in our party to order from the Early Bird menu when it was clearly past 6 o'clock Ordered the seafood platter (fried) which included oysters, flounder, deviled crab, shrimp, and scallops. You can order it broiled too if you're health conscious. First the flounder was very good, but I took off the breading as it was TOO much fried batter. Fried oysters were really good. I could've eaten them all day. Wasn't a fan of the scallops and the shrimp were okay, nothing fantastic. The pond in the backyard is home to turtles, fish, and gators. This is a must visit restaurant for us every trip to North Myrtle Beach! The bread basket with cinnamon rolls, sourdough, and fabulous hush puppies is wonderful. We go during the early bird hours 4:30-6. The prices are less and there is still plenty of food. The meals come with salad and a side item. You can add a cup of the fish stew (yum!) for $1. This is a family run place that my family has been to several times when we visit Myrtle. After living in Boston, the seafood is comparable to major city freshness and price! If you want non-fried seafood at a very reasonable price ($20-$26) this place is for you. Their grilled chicken is phenomenal; wonderful seasonings and not dry at all. My husband and I have really had a hard time deciding where to eat in Myrtle Beach. We saw this restaurant, just driving around and decided to stop. I am so glad we did!!! We were going to get an appetizer but decided not to once the waitress brought out cinnamon rolls, bread, and hushpuppies (complimentary)... I ordered the Seafood Monterrey which was heavenly. It came with a ton of shrimp, scallops, and crab meat over a bed of linguine with a hollandaise sauce on top - it was delicious.. Different than anything I've ever tried. Hubby got the captains platter with fried oysters, scallops, shrimp and crab. He was in heaven also!! Both entrees came with a side, a salad, and fish stew. You can't go wrong at this traditional Myrtle Beach seafood restaurant. It may not have changed much over the many years its been here, but you really shouldn't fix it if it isn't broken. The bread basket and fish stew will get you off to a great start. The baked flounder is my favorite entree. If you like onion rings, they are great here. Me and my husband came here last night after going to Mr. Fish and not wanting to wait there for an hour, someone told us Chesapeake House was very good. We were seated immediately, and our server was wonderful. Very informative and attentive without being overbearing. The ambiance of the restaurant is wonderful, the view of the lake with the turtles and alligators is nice as well. The food, however, was not up to par. The quality of the food is not worth the price. I had sautéed shrimp and my husband had the fried seafood platter. Neither one of us were at all impressed. I think Chesapeake House is a nice traditional seafood restaurant, but I wish they would reinvent their menu to suit more modern tastes. Myrtle beach could really use a seafood restaurant for those who value fresher, healthier options. Collectively, we ordered shrimp creole, deviled crabs, and lobster pie. French fries were the side for my ten year old daughter, and even my toddler wouldn't eat them(and she requests fries every time we ask her what she'd like to eat). I think the taste of the oil combined with the bland seasoning made them less than tasty. The complimentary fish stew is good, and I liked the lobster pie, but it really needs a gourmet boost or at least some vegetables. My daughter did like her first deviled crab. For the money you spend, it would be nice if the food was a bit more updated in terms of freshness and nutrition. The bread basket is good and we loved the hushpuppies, and all you have to do is save the cinnamon rolls for dessert--there is no need to eat them first. read more

My friend and I tried the Chesapeake House because there were a lot of cars in the parking lot and thought that might be a good sign. We are sooooo glad we did. We liked it so much we returned 3 days later for an encore. I had the fried oysters and they were the best I have EVER eaten. The cinnamon rolls are to die for and they make their own salad dressing which is wonderful. My friend had stuffed flounder and loved it. This was a great find our last night of vacation. The decor is a little outdated but their quality of food and service more than make up for it! They start you off with hushpuppies and cinnamon rolls with their home made honey butter. Their fish stew was awesome and came with every entre. I had their house special of flounder with a crab stuffing on top - it was so well prepared and their house tartar sauce is the best I've ever had. My husband had their lobster lie which was rich and delicious. Their serving sizes are proportionate and you get great quantity and quality for the price. This place was highly recommended on Yelp, so we decided to give it a try. Bad idea. We know better than to go to tourist traps. The only item that was really good was the cinnamon roll. We paid $50 for a cinnamon roll!! The shrimp was soggy and had onion rings piled all over the top and the crab cakes were nothing but bread. I couldn't find any crab meat. Do not go to this place. Very good place to go in North Myrtle Beach. They start you off with fresh baked bread, hush puppies and cinnamon rolls before your dinner even gets to you. While you're waiting on food, they also send you a sample of their seafood stew, kind of like a vegetable beef soup with seafood instead of meat and vegetables. Every year I go, I usually get the seafood platter. This year I tried the Seafood Monterey, not bad last night but should've got the Mahi Mahi special. read more

This is one of our usual stops every year in Myrtle Beach. This year will be our last stop here. The food was terrible. The fish was dry as we had both the fried and broiled varieties. The "deviled" crab I've had better out of a frozen meal. Way over priced and the seafood is definitely not fresh. I think Gordon's fishermen in the frozen food section is way better. One party in our group got the friend pork chop and it was very dry. Very disappointing experience. This place has gone down hill and the recent reviews are right about this place being bad.
