Finally made it to Chester's Hamburgers last night, and I'm glad I did! Not sure why it took me so long to try it!! Great environment. Easily one of the best burgers I've had in San Antonio. Everything was on point -- from the soft, fresh bun and flavorful toppings to the juicy, perfectly cooked patties. The fries were cooked just right, and the onion rings were incredible: crispy and crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. You can tell they take pride in making a quality burger. Definitely won't be my last visit. If you haven't checked them out yet, do yourself a favor and give Chester's a try. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. I've been on a real burger crawl the last month or two and had heard only good things about Chester's so I was eager to try it. I went last night with my wife and I order a cheeseburger with onion rings. My wife ordered a bacon cheeseburger with a milkshake. The atmosphere here is really something that Chester's has down to an art. The decorations make the restaurant feel local, and a little cool. It's kind of like walking into a dive bar, or more appropriately a burger place in the 60's. That look really works for this place and as I waited on my food I had the idea that I might enjoy coming back to get a burger and a beer, watch a game or two. You walk up to the counter to order, and the cashier at the front was helpful. He was even patient as I picked out a beer from their pretty impressive selection of bottled beer behind the counter. Everything here was a positive experience, so you may be asking why this review isn't more star filled. Well service and atmosphere aside, I have to take into account why I went to this place pretty heavily and that was for a burger. In this case that burger is bringing this score down pretty hard. The onions rings were top notch, exactly what you expect from a local style hamburger place, but done totally right. Where this review loses its steam is when I bit into my burger and found a patty that was overcooked, and totally lacking any flavor. It was very unfortunate because the bun was nice and soft with a good structural integrity just like I like it, the toppings were crisp and fresh, but the burger patty is the soul of the burger. In this case that soul needed to get itself to church a bit more to do some internal searching. My wife's burger was similar, and her bacon was also somehow cheap and flavorless. This is a huge blind spot for Chester's, the signature product needs to be better than this. My rating system is pretty basic, if you're a somewhere that I wouldn't tell you to go even if it was right around the corner from you that's going to be a two star. Unfortunately Chester's is going to fall into that category. There are the bones of a great restaurant here, but work needs to be done. I hope to do a re-review in a couple years and see more promise. read more

Came here one day when I had the day off and fiance did not. I had no trouble finding parking when I got here. I went inside and took my spot in line. There was only one person in front of me. When it was my turn, I ordered a beer and two chili dogs then sat down and waited for my food to be ready. My food was ready quickly and I picked it up at the counter. The woman that gave me my food asked if I wanted a fork. I said no. I learned later that saying no was a mistake. With my food, I headed to their enclosed porch area. The chili dogs were really good and had a generous amount of chili. It had enough chili that it was falling off when I dug in. This was when I learned that I made a mistake not taking the fork. A woman that worked at the restaurant checked the patio customers while I was making a mess and she asked if I wanted a fork. I said yes this time and she went back inside and got me a fork. That they check on their customers is really nice. Alot of places that have you pick up your food at the counter do not check on you after you get your food. I recommend this place for good food and service. read more

A good ol greasy spoon burger. The spot is pretty straight forward. Simple menu, good food, good atmosphere. You start by ordering at the front register near the umbrella. They have a beer fridge behind the register with nothing too crazy, just about most typical beers. They do have lots of tables good for bigger groups of 8 people. There's lots of TVs showing sports. Chester's used to be one of the best places to get a great burger. After our most recent lackluster visit, we've decided it's no longer the case. It wasn't very busy at all, but the burgers took an unusually long time to arrive to our table. We ordered fries and onion rings but, upon the food's arrival, we were told that the onion rings would be a bit longer. Perhaps they had been waiting on the rings to bring everything together because, after all that time we waited, the burgers arrived barely warm. The fries weren't hot either, and they seemed dry on the inside. The rings were eventually delivered, but the breading was stodgy. Not the glorious rings of the past. The interior hasn't changed. Still dark, looking a little worse for wear at this point, but I understand it's the traditional "look" of Chester's. Our first ever Chester's experience decades ago was at the I-10 location. It's a bit of a drive these days, but we'll try it out the next time we are nearby just to see if that's still a better location or if Chester's has become "meh" across the board. read more

While in SA for business, I passed Chester's, it looked like an old burger joint, 3.7 on Yelp but thought I'd give it a try. Nice, big menu. Lots of options. Tons of beers. I got the single bacon cheeseburger. And fry's - I told them crispy fries. The burger was average. Good, but nothing special. The fries - fresh cut but not crispy, not at all. I said something to a lady behind the counter and her response was, "that's the way we make them". Rather disappointing. I walked away spending $16ish and wishing I had done Taco Bell. I've been a Chester's customer for 35 years. Excellent burgers and big selection of beers.

Chester's serves good burger that all still run less than or at $10 for a double cheeseburger. The burgers are juicy, and the double will more than fill you up. Avoid the green chilies which don't add much spice or flavor, but the bacon is a nice touch to add. The fries are a generously served portion. They're really long and crispy, but you'll have to add your own salt because for some reason Chester's won't. Or if they do it's unnoticeable because while well cooked, these are bland fries. The shakes are good and the vibe is older but fun. Lunch rush is awful so go during an off hour. Parking at this location might be a little tougher in a bigger vehicle thanks to a smaller parking lot. read more

Its longevity speaks for itself. When you want an ole school burger this spot is it. Those fries are one of a kind and the poppy seed bun is a mainstay. The kitchen is open so you can see what they are doing which I like. They have pretty good soft serve as well. You place your order before being seated. Then when your order is ready they call your name to pick it up. All condiments are on the tables. This is by far one of the best burgers I have ever had and their onion rings are cooked to perfection. The right amount of crisp! Probably one of the best burgers places in town. I'm sure I've been here about 80 bajillion times. The poppy seed bun and freshly grilled patty are so mouth watering delicious, I crave this place on a daily. The service is pretty good on dining in and taking out. This time we weren't acknowledged for a while at the register. But I will let it slip since they were pretty backed up with take out orders from what I can gather.
