Had a great breakfast there on a Monday! We ordered inside and since it was such a lovely day, we grabbed a table outside. They call out the numbers and pass you the food through the window. Super easy and service is good but minimal. Exactly what we wanted! Everything was great! I enjoyed the farm breakfast - 2 eggs cooked over easy, home fries with bits of red bell pepper, slices of bacon and sausage. Slice of toast with homemade jam. First time visiting my son, in his new home on Lemon St.. We walked to Chestnut Cafe, and saw some beautiful homes, along the way. Two people actually invited us into their homes! So friendly! The omelet I ordered was superb...fresh and filled with cheese and veggies. Since we'd brought his dog along, we ate outside at the cute tables w/umbrellas. My husband and I LOVE it here. The staff is friendly, the vibe is so pleasant (always soft music playing in the background,) and it's a super easy walk for us that makes for a perfect weekend routine post-workout. Walked in at 1:50pm both workers behind the bar did not even say hi or welcome or will be right with you. One stepped to the side as to hide behind the expreso machines. The other gave her back. The place only had 3 guest. Waited like 5 min got up as I walked out I said wow they don't even greet you. The one customer shook her head. Never been to this establishment and will never come again. The two stand outs of this establishment are the quaint space and the location in a pretty tree lined neighborhood. Near where I grew up actually. The other plus is the bagel's were NY style and very good. The service and tone of the staff was a tad less then friendly. I stood there for a few minutes and watched three of them talk amongst themselves when it was pretty obvious I was waiting patiently at the cash register to order. After I ordered they kept talking prompting me to ask if they could please make up my latte. No rush with this crew. Oh, and one more thing. I asked for a bagel w/ cream cheese and tomato. As you can see per the attached picture, by the letter of the law there was indeed a few particles of tomato sprinkled on my bagel. Never saw anything quite so chintzy. Been here dozens of times. Used to walk 20 minutes just to get my ice coffee on. Consistently great atmosphere - art, books, nirvana, fun mustaches, f and mers, church goers, awkward dates....Unfortunately, what's also consistent is that you'll be dripping buckets into your latte...this place is 90 degrees year round. I'm not sure if they want to convince you that global warming is real but it doesn't matter what time of year it is, you can count on leaving moister than you came in. Atmosphere: 4/5 Service is pretty hit or miss. They have crazy turnover and at times they are swamped (Sunday lunch). Sometimes your capers are missing off your bagel. But that's the life of a high volume business... Service: 4/5 Food is nice but nothing special- bagels, wraps, paninis. Quality is very dependent on who's making it. I walked by Chestnut Hill for so long waiting for it's doors to open. Like a movie preview you see years before the scheduled release. It's on my walk to work, and only a few blocks from my house. So yeah, add me to the list of people who couldn;t wait for it to open. I actually have some friends who were so annoyed at the time they took to open that they refused to go in. THEIR LOSS. Seriously, this place is awesome. By far my fave coffee shop in the city, and maybe... the world :D I usually have a Creme Brulee Latte and a Egg sandwich on a bagel in the morning. Both are by far the best you can get in Lancaster. The creme brulee latte is creamy, and beautiful. I wish I knew more cool coffee shop terminology, but anyway their roast is awesome. I love love love their espresso drinks. The breakfast sandwich doesn;t try to be anything fancy. It's just a solid breakfast sandwich with good ingredients. They also just added an option for croissant, it's pretty good, but I'll stick to my everything bagel. I don't want to name names, but the best sandwich maker knows who she is. What makes her the best sandwich maker? In a word, butter. Plenty of butter on that breakfast sam. Just had lunch there, which spawned my urge to review them. It was a Ham and Brie sandwich. Really tastey and fresh. I wanted the corn salad, but they were out, but fortunately the fresh greens salad stepped up to the plate. I was not dissappointed. If you are looking for a modern, cozy, neat, and cool, this is not the place for you. Cafe is very relaxing, laid back, and low key. Staff are friendly and helpful. They look happy to be there. I saw a lot of homemade bakeries - muffins, oatmeal, scones, and cakes. Place also has plain yogurt which you can pick toppings of your choices. Matcha green tea latte is a must try! read more

With a love for coffee and experience working at Caribou Coffee for a little while I started out 2014 with the mission to visit all of the coffee shops in my area. Location and Ambiance: Great location near F&M campus, and a great ambiance for working and enjoying a meal or just a cup of coffee. Coffee: I grabbed a cup of drip coffee, and it was truly fantastic. They also had a great selection of lattes and other beverages Food: The food was definitely a winner for Chestnut Hill Cafe. I've given this place many chances and more so because I knew people that worked here or trained the bar staff. Their drinks are not good, I got a London fog and other various latte or tea drinks a handful of times and I'm not that picky but I threw more than one away... It was that bad. The neighborhood it's in is nice and the regulars are a little off but I wanted it to be better since I live fairly close by. I haven't had much of their food outside of a muffin or something pre-made so I can't judge too critically on that but at the end of the day it's a cafe and their drinks which should be the main focus just suck. read more

It was my 2nd trip to this cafe, and I called ahead and put in an order for a bacon/egg/cheese sandwich. I arrived and they handed me my sandwich. I didn't check until I got into my car and drove a few blocks away and noticed it was a TURKEY/egg/cheese. I had to drive back over and mention the mistake...no apology from the worker I handed the sandwich back to...and he began working on the new sandwich, and hands me another "turkey egg sandwich" ...I explain AGAIN, that I wanted a bacon egg sandwich.. now I'm running farther behind for my morning plans, as the purpose of calling ahead, was to not add much of a disruption to the day! Still doesn't apologize for the 2nd mistake, and he pulls off the larger turkey pieces and puts on bacon. I am a regular at Chestnut Hill Cafe. The staff is the warmest and most welcoming. So naturally, it was disturbing for me to witness another customer yell at an employee over wait-times today, and alleged mean comments (I was there, nothing was disrespectful). The mom-and-pop/"family" feel to this spot that makes it so popular means there are ONLY 3-4 people servicing EVERYONE. I love coming here, and it is disturbing when employees are scrambling the best they can and get yelled at for not providing chain-restaurant service. Thank you to Chestnut Hill Cafe employees for always being patient and providing an atmosphere that feels like home away from home. read more

This very new place quickly became not only my favorite coffee shop in Lancaster, but one of my favorite coffee shops that I've found in any city. The atmosphere is really nice. It is very spiffy and nice, in an ornate sort of way, combining a clean, modern renovation with the sort of character and color that exemplifies the best of independent coffee shops. There are a diversity of places to sit...small but not-too-small tables in the back, a counter up front, and a cozy area with sofas. The place does fill up at busy times but you can usually at least get a seat at the counter. There is also very nice outdoor seating on the street. Everything here is extremely reasonably priced, from the tea to the coffee, to the bagels and soups. It's possible to get a very filling meal here for a reasonable price--and the food is outstanding: there are many options for fresh veggies on the bagels, the soups are great, and they have random specials (like Vietnamese fresh rolls, for instance, which are here on Wednesdays and always sell out really quickly). They serve Rishi tea (http://ratetea.net/brand/rishi/3/) and I have to credit them with helping me discover Rishi, a great brand of mostly fair-trade and organic teas. This place has a really neighborhood feel. All sorts of interesting characters hang out here. It gets very busy (and sometimes a bit disorganized) during the lunch period, but the rest of the time it is more laid-back. This place tends to be much more active in the morning than in the afternoon and evening. The hours are great too. This place is everything that a coffee shop should be. It's among the best of the best in every way. read more

I literally just saw the guy behind the counter scooping food from a container with his gloves and eating then continue to prepare food. What's with the open container of ice cream cones on the sales counter? Why are there broken pieces of plastic in the ice cream case? Why is the department of health ok with a chalk board right above the prep area? Why is the department of health ok with food wrapped bake sale style with no ingredients listed? Chestnut Hill makes a mean espresso drank, and they also have a great menu and some great soups and sandwiches. Also local ice cream. A more neighborhood feel than the other coffee shops in town, mostly because it's just much smaller. Fewer burnout-hipster-artiste types than Square One and fewer suburban types than Prince Street. Service has improved considerably since they opened, when spacey employees were par. Everyone's always friendly and the service is pretty fast. Teapots are an ergonomic disaster but it's a good time. Brewed coffee is good. Often hard to get a seat. read more

I won't claim to know the first thing about how espresso drinks are made. It appears there is a very expensive looking stainless steel machine - operating under some obscure universal law mandating that it be operated by a very cool 20-something artist who is doing this for the money but is as talented at making a cappuccino as she is wielding her musical instrument - which somehow turns those little miraculous brown beans into frothy white pillowy cups of liquid heaven. That's the scientific explanation, anyhow. So I don't know the process, but I do know the product. Some cafés seem to use less than whole milk (blasphemy!) or sugar free syrups when making a latte (madness!). Some will only provide one shot of espresso in your latté or americano. If you're anything like me, when it comes to shorting me on the caffeine I turn into a pathetic drug fiend who has hit rock bottom and will resort to drastic, if not illegal, measures to get his fix. Not to worry - Chestnut Hill Café doesn't skimp on any of these details. When Buddy the Elf took Zooey Deschanel to get the world's best cup of coffee, he should have come here. read more

This is the place where all good souls gather in the vicinity more or less bounded by Franklin & Marshall College to the west, Harrisburg Pike to the north, Orange Street to the South and Water Street to the east. I see plenty of folks who come in for a cup of fair trade coffee (three choices per day) with laptop in hand a who spend an hour or more there catching up on emails and meeting with friends. Small, yes, but there's always someone willing to make accommodations to squeeze you in. Everybody's nice at Chestnut Hill Cafe. The owner's dog Murphy stops by from time to time. A "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" Sheep dog, he's a the mascot of the operation. read more

Chestnut Hill Cafe is a wonderful, beautiful, cafe located in Lancaster, PA. I've been coming here for over 5 years and will continue being a loyal customer. I'd recommend the breakfast burrito, as well as the turkey panini, and the grilled bean wrap. The coffee is also fantastic. The only advocate I wish would change was management's decision not to carry Rijuice juices. There's a reason why I'm finding myself visiting other local cafes who carry the fresh juices. This neighbourhood cafe' is, by far, my favourite in Lancaster city. They make a wonderful latte and the coffee is always hot. As far as food goes, I love the scones and grilled pb&j sandwich.. The bagel, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich was so-so. Their food menu is pretty extensive and is enhanced by a yoghurt bar and Carmen & David's ice cream. I prefer the off-peak hours so I can find a seat to read my book and enjoy my coffee. However, if socialising is your thing then peak hours are definitely the way to go as it can get pretty packed. This place is so Lancaster-esk. I love its quaintness & charm. Many of the items are fair-trade & organic. I ordered the fresh mozarella panini with a side of mixed greens; it was really good! The macchiato was amazing. I was really impressed. They offer raw sugar cane cubes too, which is how I like to sweeten my buzz. All of the pastries looked amazing; I'd love to go back and try them.
