This was close to the hotel that we were staying at on NHL Draft weekend and we really, really did not want to go inside MoA. So when our choices appeared to be TGI Friday's, IHOP and Chevy's...well...there aren't Chevy's in Tennessee, so that's where we went. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was that I felt like I had been there before. About 10 years ago, there was a chain of restaurants called Rio Bravo Cantina that had several locations throughout Tennessee...and the menu appeared to be the exact same, right down to the fried ice cream. Then the server brought the salsa. Yup, same salsa. Good salsa, but it was like stepping into a bizarro time machine. Then I googled "Rio Bravo"...turns out that it IS the same restaurant...Chevy's bought Rio Bravo in 1999. Changed the concept to "fresh mex" and eventually shut down all of the Rio Bravo locations. Anywho, it was as good as I remember it being ...I ordered the chicken fajitas, they came out mesquite grilled with tortillas that - if they weren't made in house - at least had the appearance of being fresh out of the oven. They lose a slight star for cilantro making a magic appearance in the vegetables for my chicken fajita. Seriously, I hate cilantro...stay away vile intruder. read more

I hate places that claim to be Mexican when they really are Texican. Mexican restaurants offer their tacos on CORN tortillas not flour. I like flour tortillas fine, but not for my tacos. I got fish tacos, and they were ok. I had a terrible stomachache after eating here. They didn't have horchata or agua de jamaica. They didn't even have tres leches cake. And you claim to be Mexican?? There is something special and a little different about the food at this place and it is good. First off Fresh Tortillas yum! Really good service. Very different interesting salsa that's very yummy. the main course we had some seafood enchiladas with a hot pepper sauce that was really good and not too spicy and then we had the mixed grill which was really delicious also. I'm surprised we ate all that food but it was a lot of food and they also had some grilled veggies that were really tasty and they have this corn bread that tastes like farina and it is so delicious I really want more than a teeny weeny scoop of that. So yes the place is looking dated and truthfully the bathrooms really need to be spruced up otherwise it a great place to try I highly recommend it. read more

Came here for a birthday dinner, as I had received a coupon in my email from joining their email club previously.... So glad I tried the restaurant. The food was good. I was skeptical at first because I did not see any "Mexican" dishes... Then I realized it was called "Fresh Mex" and readjusted my expectations. I had the combo plate with a cheese enchilada with meat sauce and a Chile relleno, double rice (because their beans are made with bacon fat). All the food was tasty. I was even treated to a sundae by the waiter. The food and atmosphere earned this place a 3.5 in my book. What really topped it up to a 5 star rating was the service that my waiter Ricky delivered! He was outstanding! Smiles all evening and wished me a happy birthday on more than one occasion. Drinks were never empty and he answered all my questions quickly with a smile. I went here with a need for nachos. I should have ordered them. I have in the past and they are great (the actual nachos with a pile of chips and stuff piled on top). Instead, I opted for the sampler platter appetizer (fajita nachos, wings, quesadilla and flautas). Oddly, the only thing on the plate that stood out to me was not mexican food... It was the sauce for the flautas - which was asian tasting - sweet and delicious! Otherwise, the plate really did not impress me... Things were pretty bland - they were fine, but nothing too special. Beyond the food though - service was good and there is a patio at this place... a definite plus. Chips and salsa are also provided which are both pretty good. One thing to "know before you go.." check the happy hour times. We went on week day and happened to hit right between the late night and regular happy hours - there is a span of about an hour and a half where this drops off. The prices are a bit steep ($`0.50 for a basic -albeit very large- margarita), but at happy hour prices, I would bet they are more reasonable. read more

Jorge is pretty hilarious and a very attentive bartender. Food? Over priced, bland for Mexican food, and unimpressive. I do love the salsa though!! We probably won't be back any time soon, but we appreciate Jorge. Stopped at Chevys after a holiday shopping trip to at the mall. We ended up sitting in the bar and were able to watch college football. Food was good; however I thought it was a bit over priced for sitting in the bar at a slightly cramped hi-top. I had nachos and hubs ordered the fish tacos. Our server forgot to enter his order, so I ended up sharing my food while we waited for his tacos. By the time his arrived, we were both pretty much full. The server apologized for the mistake; however there was no discount or compensation for his meal arriving 15 minutes after my food was delivered to the table. While the food here is not exceptional for a Tex-Mex styled restaurant, it was still good. I do have one qualm though. When I order avocado on my salad, I would actually like to have some avocado on it... not just two pitiful little hunks that have already started to brown. That sad looking avocado took my salad from being slightly better than the average, to saddeningly below. Okay, not the best Tex Mex I've ever had, but it's right across the street from the Mall of America and after being trapped in the mall for 6 hours with my gf, I needed to get some air. I went here for a happy hour with a couple girlfriends tonight. The menu looked delicious and there was a lot to choose from. The chips and salsa that gets brought to your table is soooo good. The salsa is a little smokey and so good. I ordered off the choose 2 menu and got a chicken taco and an enchilada. They were so yummy. The portion sizes were huge, everything was a high quality, i was totally completely filled up and satisfied. I would recommend this place to anyone that likes "Tex-Mex" food. The drinks that the girls ordered were really tall though so they kinda had to almost stand to get their mouths to the straws. They could have shorter, wider alcoholic drinks. I went to a happy hour with Sarah's co-workers - we had a fantastic day to sip some drinks outside. We had a south wind, so planes were flying overhead - that was the only negative. When on the patio, it's hard to hear. The drinks were cold and our server was fantastic. I don't recall anyone waiting more than two minutes to get another drink. I didn't eat a meal but when the food came out, it looked very good. The people who did eat weren't talking... They all seemed to enjoy their meals. There is a great patio to sit on - plenty of seating. We had twelve people and the staff did a great job of accommodating our group with extra tables and chairs. I will definitely return! read more

Eaten here 3 different times while visiting from Southern California and I hope to be lucky enough to go once again on my next visit late December. Yummy yummy, the streak fajita is awesome, more then you would ever see on your plate in Cali, the fresh homemade tortilla's are off the chart's, rare, very rare to get homemade fresh HOT tortilla's, I was in my glory, I would go there for those alone, fresh and hot. I really love this place. This is by far my favorite Mexican/TexMex place in the cities. There are lots of more "authentic" places in the cities, but they usually require a trip to 20th and Chicago and a good stomach pumping after said trip. So, what exactly do I like about this place? To begin, I absolutely love their chips. They are the best because they're made from scratch as I was told by our waitress. They are so light as a feather (I wish I knew how they did that; every other tortilla chip I've ever had is much more dense and thick.), and the salsa is the tasty. It's not spicy, but it has a flavor unlike any other salsa I've ever tried. When I go there, I only ordered the fajitas; so, I can't speak to the other items, but I can tell that the fajitas rock. I love both the steak fajitas and the carnitas fajitas are my favorite. Also, the freshly made tortillas were well executed. They actually have a machine-interestingly enough called "el machino"-that mass produces scratch-made fresh tortillas. It's definitely unlike anything you've ever seen in a TexMex restaurant before, and it's fun to watch the show. Update 1/28/18 I still come here a few times a year, and I still like it a lot. The steak fajitas continue to be killer--just make sure to order them medium rare. The chips, as always, are my favorite of any restaurant. I've also tried quite a few other menu items and been impressed. I really don't know what the deal is with some of the whiners on here. This is by far the most tasty, well-cleaned, and consistent tex-mex joint in town. Plus, I love their nearby location, and their staff is professional, cordial, and efficient. I hope this place never closes. It's the last bastion of tex-mex in town since Pepito's closed--they were sliding downhill anyway. read more

Had a great lunch with a friend. We shared the chicken fajitas...full size...for two ladies...it was great for sharing. I absolutely loved the homemade tortillas, made fresh minutes before your plate arrives. Amazing!!! Even took the extras home to eat later. The little tiny bit of sweet corn they give you delicious!! Wish it was more than a garnish :) Salsa wasn't my favorite...but pretty good. Everyone likes a different style tho. The corn tortilla chips are super thin and wonderful and slightly addicting. Typical chain Mexican food. I had the Fajita Burrito with crispy Carnitas. The super thick flour tortilla was terrible. The Carnitas was not crispy. The rice looked like it was Made yesterday, dry and unappealing. When I did a search for the restaurant, it said they were open at 1000. They open at 1100. Find somewhere else to go for Mexican . I won't ever eat at another chevy's. The only positive I can say is the chips and salsa were great. read more

We had a large group for a family get together, 13 adults and 12 kids across six families/checks. They were great to accommodate us on a busy Friday night. The food was great, but the service was outstanding. Gina was out server and we were all very impressed by how she handled us. There were no mistakes in the orders, beverages were attended to, chips and salsa plentiful, and every bill was accurate and given to the right family. Went here for a birthday party. Staff was friendly and helpful. Drink order was taken promptly and brought right out, but not once was I asked if I wanted a refill in the 1-1/2 hours we were there. I ordered chicken tacos with NO pico, politely letting the server know of my tomato allergy. My food arrived quickly with tomatoes on everything and the hands that brought it were gone before I could speak. The server never returned to check on the table until plates were being cleared, to see if we wanted dessert. The chicken tacos were mediocre at best. No flavor stood out and they were served on soft shell (isn't hard shell standard?). The refried beans were very good and the corn meal was great. I left the rice alone, knowing I didn't have room for it after all the crispy fresh chips and delicious salsa. Overall the experience was a fun birthday party in a festive atmosphere. However, I expect better service for a party of ten (or two). I will not be going back to pay $13 for bland tacos to have to scrape off garnish I am allergic to and have a lack of ice tea with which to wash down the lack of flavor. read more

I would definitely recommend the restaurant if in the area. I just changed my review to a 5 star. After having some carnitas in California I have to hand it to Chevys. I have been to Chevy's several times for lunch, dinner and happy hours. The food is okay it all seems pretty bland. I have had the quesadillas, tortilla soup, and shrimp bowl. I am more impressed with the margaritas and chips and salsa (although the spicy salsa is terrible).
